Col. Thomas S. Eustis
2000-10-19

Colonel Thomas B. Eustis, U.S. Army Retired, died suddenly on Saturday, October 14.

Born in South Orange, N.J. on December 9, 1926, he was the son of Gertrude J. Hay and Harold R. Eustis.

Colonel Eustis served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and graduated from Washington and Jefferson College in 1950 as a Distinguished Military Graduate with a commission in the U.S. Army. He retired in 1980 as the Chief of Staff at Fort Eustis, Virginia.

His awards and decoration include: Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, Philippine Independence Ribbon, Army Commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Bronze Star Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm, Legion of Merit with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Meritorious Unit Commendation World War II Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal (Germany), General Staff Identification Badge, Philippine Republic Presidential Unit Citation Badge, Meritorious Service Medal.

He was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Santa Rosa Peninsula, Navarre, Florida and previously the Kiwanis Club of Ft. Walton Beach and Oyster Point in Newport News, Va.

He will be remembered as a dedicated reader to the children in West Navarre Primary School, and the Alice Starkey Day Center in Ft. Walton Beach. He was also a member of the Transportation Corps Museum, National Defense Transportation Association, Association of the U.S. Army, Transportation Corps Regiment (Life Member).

He was a dedicated Army officer and an avid advocate of reading to children, with his marvelous voice that changed with the characters involved.

Survivors include his wife of 36 years, Betty; three daughter, Dee E. Kitterman and husband David of King George, Va.; Glenna E. Irvine and husband Stephen of Portland, and Thelma E. Few and husband James of Navarre; one son, Bruce R. Eustis of Syosset, New York; five grandchildren; one sister, Susanne E. Bogart of Boothbay Harbor; a niece and two nephews.

Memorial services were conducted on Wednesday, October 18 at the Hulbert Field Chapel.

The family request in lieu of flowers, donation be made to NeKrangan II Museum, Isle of Springs, ME 04549 or the Transportation Corps Museum, Ft. Eustis, VA 23602.

Lewis Funeral Home Navarre Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Gen. William J. Evans
2000-12-28

General William J. Evans passed away on Tuesday, December 12 at his home in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Gen. Evans attended Norwich Free Academy, Yale University and was a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point. He served in the U.S. Air Force for over 30 years, attaining the rank of four star general. He served as commander of the Air Force Systems Command, and retired as Commander in Chief of the U.S. Air Force in Europe and NATO Commander of the Allied Air Forces, Central Europe. General Evans was a command pilot with more than 6,500 hours in some of the world's great fighter aircraft.

General Evans' military decorations and awards included two distinguished service medals, three distinguished flying crosses, the Silver Star, Bronze Star, 24 air medals, the Swedish Knights Grand Cross of the North Star, and the General Thomas D. White, USAF Space Trophy for 1976.

In 1978 he retired from the military. He served at United Technologies Corporation as vice president, and president of Missiles and Space Systems.

A native of Norwich, Connecticut, he and his wife spent their retirement years living summers in Boothbay Harbor and winters in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Survivors include his wife, Bette; three children, William Jr., Joan Marie and Richard Thomas; eight grandchildren; two great-grand-children; and one brother, Thomas C. Evans. He was predeceased by their daughter, Bette Ann Melton.

Chapel services were held on Saturday, December 16 at Luke AFB, Arizona.

Julia Ross Neel Escher
1999-10-20

Julia Ross Neel Escher, 81, resident of Victoria Court, York Harbor, Me., died Wednesday at York Hospital following a long illness.

She was born in Columbia, Tenn., on Oct. 3, 1918, the daughter of Lake Ross and Julia (Biddle) Neel. She graduated from Columbia High School with the Class of 1936. She received her bachelor's degree in social work from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville in 1940 and received her master's degree, also in social work, from Tulane University in 1942.

She was employed for many years as the director of social work at the Leahy Clinic in Boston.

In 1984 she moved to York Harbor with her husband.

She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church of Portsmouth, N.H., and served on the Altar Guild.

She was a member of the York Garden Club and the Friends of the Library, also in York.

She was predeceased by her husband, Franklin Escher, Jr., who died in 1998.

She is survived by one son, Alfred F. Escher and his wife Betsy of The Woodlands, Tex., and two grandchildren, Kristen Escher and Eric Neel, both of Tex.

A memorial service were held on Saturday, Oct. 16, at St. John's Episcopal Church, Chapel Street, Portsmouth. Private Interment was held in the Woodland cemetery in Delhi, N.Y.

John H. Eames

John Heagan Eames, 101, of Wiscasset died Friday, May 10 at Maine Medical Center in Portland surrounded by his devoted family.

Born in Lowell, Massachusetts,July 19, 1900, and a graduate of Portland High School, he spent the early part of his adult life traveling between Maine, New York and Europe. He returned yearly to Boothbay Harbor and, for the past 30 years, lived in Wiscasset. His parents were Albert Melvin Eames Sr., and Amanda Kneeland Matthews Eames.

Mr. Eames graduated from Harvard in 1922 and then attended the Harvard Graduate School of Architecture. He worked for almost ten years in New York architectural offices before traveling to London to study art. Eames worked in a tradition of painters and etchers that included James Abbott McNeill Whistler, John Taylor Arms, Malcolm Osborne and Robert Austin. The last two were his teachers during the early 1930s at the Royal College of Art in London.

He had an extensive list of exhibition credits going back to 1935, whichincluded the Royal Academy in London, the Art Institute of Chicago, theVenice Biennial, the New York World's Fair in 1939, among many others. His work is in many permanent collections including the Library of Congress and the Metropolitan Musuem of Art. In 1992 the Bates College Museum of Art in Lewiston honored the artist with a major exhibition of his prints and watercolors. He continued to exhibit his work, most recently in the annual exhibition of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers in London last year. Eames was a Senior Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers and a member of the National Academy of Design.

For the past three years, Mr. Eames had the distinction of leading the alumni procession at the Harvard commencement as the oldest attending graduate.

Mr. Eames married Muriel McMicken in 1924. They spent their life together traveling in Europe to pursue interest in architecture and landscape as subject material for his painting and etchings, though returning yearly to the Boothbay region. Muriel Eames died in 1971.

Survivors include a daughter, Consuelo Eames Hanks of Jefferson and her husband Ted Hanks; a brother, Albert M. Eames of Waldoboro; four grandchildren, Pebble Straw and her husband Lee of Newcastle, Robyn Holman of Auburn; Heather Page and her husband, Ray, of Scarborough and Ian Hanks and his wife, Jaime, of Portland; grandson-in-law, Carl R. Schwinn of Portland; great-grandchildren, Aran and Autumn Straw of Newcastle, James R. Chassereau of South Carolina, Audrey, Sophie and Muriel Schwinn of Auburn and Miranda and Skylar Page of Scarborough. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and one great-great-grandchild.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Butler M. Eames of Boothbay Harbor and Robert Eames.

A funeral service was held on Thursday, May 16 at the Simmons, Harrington and Hall Funeral Home, Wiscasset Road, Boothbay. Burial will follow in the Village cemetery in Jefferson following the service. The Rev. Robert Dorr will officiate. Arrangements are by Simmons, Harrington & Hall, Boothbay.

William H. Eberhard

William H. Eberhard, 70, of Middletown, N.J., and a long-time vacationer in Wiscasset, died Thursday, November 29 at the Passaic Beth Israel Hospital, after battling lung cancer for two years.

Born and raised in Garfield, N.J., he moved to Middletown in 1962, and established Eberhard Floor Covering/Carpet One. Through the 40 years he built the business, he enjoyed his loyal customers and the people who worked for him. He will always be remembered for the pride and quality workmanship while working in the homes of Middletown and the surrounding areas.

One of his greatest joys was being involved with and coaching the St. Mary's softball team.

He was also a veteran of the U.S. Navy, where he endured travels to the unknown lands.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Dorothy Kozonasky; one son, William H. Jr. of Middletown; two daughters, Ellen and her husband Michael Andreas of Middletown, and Heidi Eberhard of Mass.; two grandchildren, Rachel and Michael Andreas; three brothers, August Eberhard of Smithville, N.J., Victor Eberhard of Atlanta, Ga., and his twin brother, Edward Eberhard of Springfield, Va.

He was predeceased by a sister, Dorothy Parry.

A funeral service was held Monday, December 3 at the Thompson Funeral Home, Red Bank, N.J. Private cremation followed.

Dallas H. Edwards

Dallas Hunter Edwards, 86, died peacefully January 2 at the Gregory Wing at St. Andrews Village in Boothbay Harbor.

He was born in Waterbury, Conn., a son of the late C. Harri Edwards and Bessie Irene (Shaw) Edwards. He grew up in Waterbury, Conn. and Gardiner, Me.

After graduating from Gardiner High School he attended St. Pauls in Garden City, Long Island and the University of Maine at Orono.

During the war he worked for Sikorsky Helicopters. After the war he worked at General Electric and Sessions Clocks in New York, Connecticut and Chicago.

He married Joan Elinor Fales in 1940. She predeceased him in 1968.

Mr. Edwards became an independent representative for many companies during the 1960s and 1970s. He retired from being a representative, and moved to Wolfeboro, N.H. where he opened his own Real Estate office. After 15 years he retired to move to Maine where he resided since the mid 1980s.

Mr. Edward is survived by his only son, John F. Edwards and his wife Cynthia of Sawyers Island, Boothbay.

A service will be held 1 p.m. on Monday, January 12 at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, 975 Wiscasset Road, Boothbay, Maine. Rev. Christopher Sherrill will officiate.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to The Gregory Wing, St. Andrews Hospital, 145 Emery Lane, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538.

Arrangements are under the care of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay, Maine.

Aidan P. Edwards
2003-05-01

Aidan P. Edwards, age 6, of Weld died unexpectedly of natural causes at his home in Weld Friday, April 25.

Born Feb. 7, 1997, in Bangor, he was a son of Ruth C. Lundy and Harlon P. Edwards.

He loved school and was a kindergarten student at Weld Elementary School. His hobbies included collecting Pokemon cards and teddy bears. He liked to ride his bike, sled, fish, play soccer and swim at the beach. He especially enjoyed Dummer's Beach and exploring the mysteries of the solar system. His favorite times were spent with friends and family.

Survivors include his mom, Ruth Lundy of Weld; his dad, Harlon Edwards of Orrington; a brother and sister, Liam James Edwards and Norah Elizabeth Edwards, both of Weld; maternal grandparents, Patrick and Elizabeth Lundy of Weld; paternal grandparents, Frank Edwards of Orrington and Elizabeth Rowe and her husband, Michael Rowe of Waldoboro; paternal great-grandparents, Mildred Edwards of Island Falls and Ernest Hayes of Merrill; maternal uncle and aunt, James P. and Jennifer Lundy, and maternal cousins, Lauren and Jaakob Lundy, all of Weld; maternal great aunt, Connie Simpkins of Weld; paternal aunt, Shelby Edwards of Boothbay Harbor; paternal uncle Carter Edward and his wife, Patty of Auburn; paternal cousins, Cody, Baylea, Maybelle and Carmella Edwards, all of Boothbay Harbor.

Funeral services were held Wed., April 30 at the Weld Congregational Church with the Rev. Ronald Ashworth officiating. Burial will be at the Mtn. View Cemetery, Weld.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given to his family c/o Wiles Funeral Home, P.O. Box 827, Wilton, ME 04294.

Constance R. Edwards
2001-08-02

Constance R. Edwards, 92, of Boothbay Harbor, died on Saturday, July 28 at the Gregory Wing at St. Andrews Village.

Born on February 9, 1909 in Peabody, Kansas, she was the daughter of Wilbert Davidson and Eleanor Marshall Gephart Ross. She grew up in Topeka and Emporia and graduated from Emporia High School in Emporia, Kansas. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University of Kansas in 1930, and taught in elementary school in Kansas.

Mrs. Edwards moved to New York and taught English at Briar Cliff. She met her husband, Arthur through a mutual friend in Connecticut and they were married on August 17, 1936.

She raised her family in Wellesley, Massachusetts and was a longtime summer resident of Squirrel Island. She moved to Boothbay Harbor in April of 1988 and was one of the first residents in the new Gregory Wing.

Mrs. Edwards was friendly to all and known for her smile. Her hobbies included reading, music, her animals, bird watching, knitting, embroidery, gardening and traveling. She was well known for her way with plants.

She was a member of the Board of Directors for the Cambridge School of Weston, Mass., and was actively involved in the League of Women Voters, Wellesley Garden Club, and Wellesley Hills Unitarian Church. She was also very involved in the Squirrel Island community, including the Ladies Improvement Association, the Library Board and the Board of Overseers.

Survivors include two sons, Ross Edwards of Boothbay, and George H. and his wife Rachel Edwards of New York City, New York; one daughter, Eleanor E. Eide of Edgecomb; four grandsons, Arthur R. Edwards of North Attleboro, Mass., Scott D. Edwards of Ayer, Mass., Steven R. Edwards of Boothbay, and Jonathan H. Edwards of New York City, New York; one great-granddaughter, Me-lissa Edwards of North Conway, New Hampshire; and two nephews and one niece.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Squirrel Island Library, Squirrel Island, ME 04570, St. Andrews Gregory Wing, Activity Fund, 145 Emery Lane, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538 or Lincoln County Animal Shelter, Atlantic Highway, Edgecomb, ME 04556.

Arrangements were by Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.
