Elizabeth T. Ellis
2004-02-12

Elizabeth T. "Betty" Ellis, 95, of South Weymouth, Mass., and Southport died Sunday, February 8.

She was born in Boston, grew up in Braintree and had lived in Weymouth since 1938.

Mrs. Ellis summered on Southport all her life.

She graduated from Thayer Academy located in Braintree in 1927 and was a graduate of Jackson College in Boston in 1931.

Mrs. Ellis was a homemaker and enjoyed playing bridge, being the last living member of the same bridge club for 60 years.

She also loved to paint watercolor paintings, power boating and sailing in Southport and gardening.

She was predeceased by her husband, Howard B. Ellis, Jr. and her daughter Margot Cote of Lisbon.

Survivors include a son, Hobie Ellis and his wife Pat of Wayne; and three grandchildren, Dawn Durocher of Scarborough, Nancy Shablom of Haymarket, Va. and Brian Cote of Southwest Harbor; and six great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held at the C.C. Shepherd Funeral Home, 134 Pleasant St. (Columbia Sq.) S. Weymouth on Tuesday, February 10.

Reverend Daniel Harris officiated.

Interment was held in the Mt. Hope Cemetery, South Weymouth, Mass.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Betty's memory to the Perkins School for the Blind 175 N. Beacon St., Watertown, MA 02472,

Alda F. Elwell
2004-11-18

Alda F. Elwell, 85, of Newcastle, died Wednesday, November 10 at Coves Edge in Damariscotta.

The daughter of William C. and Ruth I. (Genthner) French, she was born April 13, 1919, in Nobleboro.

She graduated with honors from Lincoln Academy in the Class of 1936 and faithfully attended every Alumni Banquet until 2001.

For most of her career, she worked as a domestic in the region, including the office of Dr's Frank Avantaggio and Ralph Powell and the office of Don Stewart. For the longest period of time, Mrs. Elwell was the Sexton at St. Andrews Church in Newcastle, where she was also a life-long member.

She was well known in the Miles Memorial Hospital community where she gave birth to eight of her 12 children.

She had a lifelong love for cats and kept a personal journal of her thoughts and life from her teen years.

Survivors include nine children, Judy Collamore of Lakeland, Fla., Julie Groves of Key West, Fla., James A. Elwell of Madison, Jerry Elwell of Bristol, Joanne Anasos of Binghamton, N.Y., Jerel Elwell of Damariscotta, Joan Cunningham of Bath, Joy Black of Damariscotta and Jodie Clark of Newcastle; one sister, Eileen D. Gould of Nobleboro; 21 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Elwell was predeceased by her husband Kenneth in 1992, as well as three children, Jeffrey, Janice and Jean.

A service to celebrate Mrs. Elwells life was held Monday, November 15 at the Strong Funeral Home in Damariscotta.

She was laid to rest at the Dunbar cemetery in Nobleboro.

C. Brewster Earle
2005-03-24

C. Brewster "Bruce" Earle, 83, of Northborough, Mass., died Thursday, March 10 at UMass Medical Center in Worcester.

Born and raised in Lisbon, Maine, son of Myron and Ruth (Jordan) Earle, he lived in North-borough for the past 49 years.

He graduated from Lisbon High School and the University of Maine-Orono, Class of 1950.

As a sergeant in the 10th armored division during World War II, he fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.

Mr. Earle was employed as a Property Loss Adjuster in the Natick office of Liberty Mutual Insurance for 37 years, retiring in 1986.

As a member of Trinity Church, he was an usher and served on the Board of Deacons.

Mr. Earle was a 50-year, 32nd degree Mason in the Ancient York Lodge #155 AF&AM in Lisbon, and a past president and active member of the Northborough Acacia Club. Other memberships include Worcester Dance Assembly, and past president of the Northborough Historical Society.

He enjoyed traveling, spending summers in Boothbay Harbor, cross-country skiing and genealogy.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Genevieve "Gen" (Wallace) Earle; two sons, Donald V. Earle of Hampton, N.H. and Richard B. Earle of Grafton; a daughter, Nancy L. LaPierre of Shrewsbury; five grandchildren; two brothers, William M. Earle of Damariscotta, and James R. Earle of Calais; several nieces and nephews.

The funeral was held Monday, March 14 in Trinity Church in Northborough, Mass.

Burial followed in Howard Street Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Church Memorial Fund, 23 Main Street, Northborough, MA 01532; or Ancient York Lodge #155 AF&AM, 12 Fortin Ave., Lisbon, ME 04250-6027.

Ruth B. Eastwood
2005-04-07

Ruth (Ballard) Eastwood, 102, died Monday, Mary 28 at Shannondale Health Care in Knoxville, Tenn.

She was the wife of the late Dr. Walter H. Eastwood, who was Sr. Pastor at First Presbyterian Church of Milton, Penn from 1939-1943, and Sr. Pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Allentown from 1943 to 1966.

Born in Norristown, Penn., she was the oldest child of Herbert T. Sr. and Mary Jane (Ross) Ballard.

She was a graduate of Friends Central School and Drexel University Class of 1927.

In 1966, the Eastwoods retired to Boothbay Harbor.

Mrs. Eastwood was active in church and civic groups in all the communities where she lived.

Most recently, she had been at Shannondale Health Care, Knoxville, Tenn.

Survivors include a son, David B. Eastwood Sr. and wife Judith M. of Knoxville, Tenn.; two grandchildren, Heather Eastwood and David Eastwood Jr.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Margaret; and a son, Walter H. Jr.

Memorial services were held Saturday, April 2 at First Presbyterian Church, 3231 Tilghman St., Allentown, Penn.

Arrangements were by Trexler Funeral Home, Inc., 1625 Highland St., Allentown, PA, 18102.

John R. Eaton
2006-01-12

John R. Eaton of Edgecomb, died Sunday, January 8 at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick.

Born on April 24, 1936 on Badgers Island in Kittery, he was the son of Oscar and Louise Eaton.

He attended Kittery schools and graduated from Traip Academy in 1953.

Mr. Eaton retired as the director of the Naval Material Quality Assessment Office after 35 years of service.

He was a member of the Masonic Naval Lodge A.F. & F.M. of Kittery, as well as the Kora Temple Shrine.

In 1994 he moved to Edgecomb from Kittery.

After retirement, he was active in the community and served as chairman of the board of selectmen from 1999 to 2001, as well as the Edgecomb Harbor Committee.

Mr. Eaton was an avid boater and Past Commodore of the Arundel Yacht Club.

He was a board member of the Wiscasset Yacht Club, a member of the Belfast Boat Club and past member of the Down East Yacht Club.

Survivors include a son, Gary Eaton of Moody; two daughters, Cheryl Foster and her husband Mark of Centralia, Wash., Pamela Halstead and her husband William of Sanford; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many close friends.

A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 14 at BintliffÂ’s, Route 1 in Edgecomb.

In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations in Mr. EatonÂ’s name to the Shriners ChildrenÂ’s Hospital, 516 Carew St., Springfield, MA 01104.

Burton Edwards
2005-11-03

Burton Edwards of Boothbay, died Sunday, Oct. 30 at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick.

Born in Boston, Mass. on March 6, 1919, he was the son of Roscoe D. V. and Florence W. Edwards.

He graduated from Wellesley High School and Babson College.

In 1941 he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and was later commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Quartermaster Corps.

He was assigned to the eighth Air Force in Great Britain, where he served until 1945 when he was separated from active duty as Captain.

He joined the U.S. Army Reserve and was placed in the Retired Reserve in 1962 as a Lieutenant Colonel, after having served for 21 years.

Later he was a member of the Retired Officers Association, the American Legion and the society of the Cincinnati.

In 1945 he went to work for Mobil Oil Corp. retiring in 1981, after holding various positions in the transportation, distribution and marketing of petroleum products throughout New England.

Following retirement, he and his wife moved to Boothbay, an area he knew well, from vacationing in Five Islands.

He became active in many community organizations, including the YMCA, Lincoln Arts Festival, Student Aid Fund, Historical Society, and the Town of Boothbay.

He was a member of Bayview Lodge of Masons, the Scottish Rite (Valley of Rockland), the Boothbay Region Garden Club, the Sawyers Island Community Assoc., and other groups.

He joined the Down East Yacht Club, the Wawenock Power Squadron, and the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club, where he directed its men’s sailing program for many years

Mr. and Mrs. Edwards traveled extensively throughout the world and participated in many Elderhostel programs both here and abroad.

He is survived by his wife Helen, of 37 years.

A Masonic and memorial service will be held on Friday, November 4, at 1 p.m. at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home at 975 Wiscasset Road in Boothbay.

Donation may be made to the Boothbay Region YMCA, P.O. Box 500, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538, or to St. Andrews Hospital, P. O. Box 417, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538, in his memory.

Arrangements are entrusted to Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home.
