Mary Fraher
1998-10-22

Mary Fraher, 81, of Boothbay Harbor (formerly of Nobleboro and Bremen) died Saturday, October 17 at the Gregory Wing of St. Andrews Hospital.

Born in New York City on October 21, 1916, she was the daughter of Charles Allen Grant and Isabel MacKinnon Grant. Youngest of five children, her siblings were Ruth, Violet, Isabel and Hector. Mary attended New York public schools and graduated from George Washington High School in 1935. She met her future husband, Edward Fraher, when he was a junior at GWHS and she was a freshman. They were married in 1940.

During World War II Mrs. Fraher did clerical work in department stores and on Wall Street. After Mr. Fraher was discharged from the Navy at the end of the war, he went to work for City Investing and she became a homemaker. Their first child, Jean, was born in 1950. Their second child, Douglas, was born in 1959 after the Frahers had moved to Pittsburgh, Penn.

In 1975 Mr. Fraher retired from working for the company of Feist & Feist and the Frahers moved to Bremen. Mrs. Fraher was very active in the Bremen Patriotic Club, the Bremen Library, the St. Andrews Society of Maine and the Second Congregational Church of Newcastle, among other organizations. She also enjoyed gardening, reading, crafts, sewing, and music. As a younger woman, she particularly enjoyed playing the piano, singing in a church choir, and ballroom dancing.

Surviving are her daughter, Jean Fraher of Boston, Mass., and her son, Douglas Fraher of Boothbay Harbor. Her husband of 56 years passed away in 1997.

Arrangements are by Simmons & Harrington Funeral Home of Boothbay Harbor. There will be a memorial service in the spring at the Second Congregational Church of Newcastle. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Gregory Wing of St. Andrews Hospital, or the Alzheimer's Association.

Mrs. Dorothy E. Franklin
1998-09-10

NORWAY Dorothy E. Franklin, 86, of Tamarao,Florida died Monday evening, September 7, 1998, at Stephens Memorial Hospital.

She was born in Weatherly, PA., December 22, 1911, the daughter of Herbert and Mary Mack Hartz. She had worked as a preschool teacher and had made her home in Florida since 1969, coming from Elizabeth, New Jersey. She was married to John F. Franklin who died in 1979.

Survivors include her daughter Susan Jane Ellis of Poland; two granddaughters, Deborah Housley of Gray and Michelle Consalvo of Portland; one sister, Cora Schickram of Hyattsville,MD; four brothers Russell Hartz of Southbend, IN, Paul and Melvin Hartz of Easton,PA and Forest Hartz of Weatherly,PA.

Services will be private, Arrangements are under the direction of Weston-Chandler Funeral Home,230 Main Street,Norway.

Mr. Ernest C. Frazee
1998-09-03

LEWISTON Ernest C. Frazee, Jr., 76, of Elm Street, Mechanic Falls, died unexpectedly Thursday evening at Central Maine Medical Center.

He was born in Mechanic Falls, July 14, 1922, the son of Ernest and Dorothy Rideout Frazee. He graduated from Mechanic Falls High School in 1940 and Bliss Business College in 1942.

He faithfully served his country in World War II from 1942 to 1946 in the 10th armored division. He was employed as a cost accountant March 1, 1946 at the paper mill in Mechanic Falls and served as office manager for Ponds Extract Co., Waterfalls Tissue Corp. and Waterfalls Tissue Company, a division of International Paper Co. and Marcal Paper. He then worked at Hamilton and Sons and retired from Bachmann Industries due to ill health.

Mr. Frazee was made Emeritus life associate of the National Association of Cost Accountants having been a member since 1946. He served as selectman for Mechanic Falls and had been chairman of the town Republican Party.

He was a 50 year member of Tyrian Lodge #73 AF & AM, a 32 degree mason of Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Lewiston-Auburn, Valley of Portland and a member of Kora Temple AAONMS. He was also a member of Summit Golf Club for many years.

Survivors include his wife Aldina Ausikaitis Frazee of Mechanic Falls; a daughter, Judith D'Amour of Minot; two grandchildren, Leah and Seth and a brother, Roy Frazee of Portland.

Mr. Frazee was predeceased by a daughter, Joan.

Graveside services were held Wednesday, September 2, at the Maple Grove cemetery in Mechanic Falls. Those who wish may make memorial gifts in his memory to Mechanic Falls Rescue Association, P.O. Box 191, Mechanic Falls. Arrangements were under the direction of Weston-Chandler Funeral Home of Mechanic Falls.

Anne B. Freed
1998-12-31

Anne B. Freed, 61, of Boothbay, died of breast cancer Sunday, December 27 at her home.

Born September 25, 1937 in Ennis, County Clare, Ireland, she was the daughter of Patrick K. and Katherine Dempsey Ryan.

Mrs. Freed worked as a hostess for Trans World Airlines, as a travel representative for Thomas Cook Travel, and as a customer service representative for Bell Atlantic Mobile Systems. Before moving to Boothbay in 1997, she lived in Bernardsville, N.J. She recently walked 50 miles for the American Cancer Society for breast cancer awareness.

Survivors include her husband of 33 years, Robert D. Freed of Boothbay; a sister, Kathryn and her husband Albert J. Guido of Ridgefield, Conn.; three nieces, Joanne Manghirmalani of Darien, Conn., Karin Guido of Danbury, Conn., and Alison Guido of San Francisco, Calif.

The visitation hours and wake were held on Tuesday, December 29 and Wednesday, December 30 at Simmons, Harrington & Hall, Boothbay. The funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, December 31 at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Boothbay Harbor.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 52 Federal Street, Brunswick, ME 04011. Arrangements are by Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.

Virginia Freeman Bryant
1999-10-13

Virginia Freeman Bryant, 76, of 36 Shore Road, York Beach, Me., died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, at York Hospital after a long illness.

She was born on Feb. 27, 1923, in York Beach, the daughter of Frank and Lena (Gibson) Freeman. She was a 1940 graduate of York High School and attended Mary Washington College in Virginia.

Mrs. Bryant had worked as an accountant for the accounting firm of Michael Calo in York for over 20 years.

Mrs. Bryant was a member and Deaconess of the Union Congregational Church of York Beach. She was an avid golfer and member of the Cape Neddick Country Club. She enjoyed traveling, knitting and cross-stitching.

Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Earl T. Bryant of York Beach; one son and daughter-in-law, Robert W. and Judith Bryant of Cape Neddick; one daughter, Donna Shepheard of Dover, N.H.; two brothers, Conrad Freeman of Northwood, N.H., and Jere Freeman of Kittery; two grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

A private service will be held. Interment will be in the First Parish Cemetery.Family requests that memorial donations may be made to the Union Congregational Church, P.O. Box 969, York Beach, ME 03910 or the American Cancer Society, Maine Division, 52 Federal St., Brunswick, ME 04011.

Mildred Freitag
2000-02-10

Mildred Freitag, a long-time summer visitor to Appalachee, died Tuesday,

February 1, 2000 at Mercy Hospital in Portland, following a brief illness. She was 95.

Born in New York City on September 5, 1904, Mrs. Freitag and her family moved to Manhasset, New York in 1940 where she devoted her energies to community service.

She served the Girl Scouts for more than 20 years as a leader, board member, crafts instructor for day camp, and she sailed with her Mariner Scouts on board the Brigantine Yankee captained by Irving Johnson of National Geographic fame.

She and her family were long-standing members of the Manhasset Congregational Church, where for many years she was a Sunday School teacher. In some cases, she taught two generations of a family's children. She served as superintendent of the Sunday School. Her involvement extended to many other church activities; she created the annual "Living Madonnas" holiday presentation and she designed and helped build and paint sets for the church musical productions.

Mrs. Freitag taught first aid for the American Red Cross for over 20 years. She was an active member of the Friends of the Manhasset Public Library and designed many summer reading programs in cooperation with the children's librarian. She was a board member of the United Fund and worked on numerous events for the fund.

She volunteered in the Pediatric Recreation program at North Shore University Hospital for nine years and chaired the Decorations Committee for fund-raising events.

Mrs. Freitag was a board member of the Strathmore Vanderbilt Country Club in Manhasset where she published the newspaper, served on the recreation committee and helped with numerous children's activities.

She was employed for several years as a crafts teacher in the Summer Center Program of the Manhasset Public Schools. She taught courses in Adult Education and she was the Art Teacher at the Valley School in Manhasset for 13 years.

When she moved to Port Jefferson Station, N.Y. in 1976, she continued to volunteer at Woodhaven Nursing Home in recreation therapy.

In 1996 she moved to Maine where she resided at Gorham House and more recently Clark's Terrace at the Park Danforth in Portland.

Survivors include her daughters, Cynthia Freitag of Boothbay Harbor and Portland, and Lynn Jordan of Mount Sinai, N.Y.; and three granddaughters. She was predeceased by her husband, William Henry Freitag, who died in 1957.

The funeral was private. Arrangements were by the Dolby Funeral Chapel in Windham. Memorial gifts in her name may be sent to The Tower Foundation, Manhasset High School, 200 Memorial Place, Manhasset, NY 11030 or Hope House Ministries, POB 359, Port Jefferson, NY 11777.

Jessie L. Friedrich
1998-11-12

Jessie L. Friedrich, 95, died Sunday evening, November 8 in a Windham health care center.

Born in Boothbay, she was the daughter of Charles and Blanche Barter Greenleaf and graduated from Morse High School in 1923.

Mrs. Friedrich spent her life cooking in summer camps and in private homes. Sewing and crocheting were her hobbies. She took pride in the fact that her grandfather was a Union soldier.

Her husband, Arno R. Friedrich, died in 1984.

Survivors include a daughter, Marjorie Keary of Westbrook; a son, Charles Friedrich of Florida; two stepdaughters, Edith Roser of New Jersey and Lorraine Reichert of Pennsylvania; a sister, Lucy MacInnis of Boothbay; and several grandchildren.

A funeral service will be on Thursday, November 12 at 1 p.m. in the Hay Funeral Home, 795 Main Street in Windham. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Eugene H. Fritz
1998-04-02

Eugene H. Fritz, 65, of Thurlow Ave., South Paris, died unexpectedly Tuesday, March 17, 1998, at his home.

He was born in Mechanic Falls, September 30, 1932, the son of Clayton and Elizabeth Hannaford Fritz.

He attended school in Welchville and graduated from Oxford High School.

He faithfully served his country 20 years in the U.S. Air Force retiring in 1973 as a Tech. Sgt. He had worked at Steego Auto Parts in Fort Fairfield.

He was the vice president of Pine Tree Chapter 33 North American Family Campers Association.

He enjoyed camping, birds, plants and traveling.

His first wife, Brigitte, died in 1989. He later married Dorothy Acorn Bryant.

Survivors include his wife, of South Paris; one son, Steven, of Presque Isle; two daughters, Mrs. Troy (Sandra) Dahlgren of Avon, CO, and Mrs. Stephen (Patricia) Howe of Presque Isle; one step-daughter, Mrs. Stephen (Kathy) McKeen of South Paris; one sister, Mrs. Bradley (Evelyn) Piper of Naples and eight grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by a brother, Robert.

Funeral services were held Saturday at the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, South Paris with Interment in Gracelawn Memorial Park, Auburn.

Russell J. Funk
1999-05-06

WEST PARIS - Russell James Funk, 80, of West Paris died Tuesday, April 27, at the Ledgeview Rehabilitation and Living Center.

He was born in Washington, DC on Sept. 20, 1918, the son of Warren C. and Irene Brooks Funk. He graduated high school in the state of Maryland.

Mr.Funk served his country in the US Army.

He married Ella Merrill on Feb. 11, 1948. Mr. Funk had worked in a dairy plant in Washington, DC., before moving to Hebron in 1953. He then worked for the U. S. Postal Service as a mail carrier in the Hebron area and retired in 1988.

He was a member of the American Legion in South Paris and the Hebron Community Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife who resides at Ledgeview in West Paris; a sister, Emily Miller of McLean, VA; two nephews, Chad Miller of Blacksburg,VA, and Michael W. Funk of Annapolis, MD; a niece Phyllis Scott of McLean, VA, and four great nieces and nephews.

Memorial Services were held on Saturday, May 1 at the Hebron Community Baptist Church in Hebron with the Rev. Anita White officiating.

Donations in his memory can be made to the Hebron Community Church, P. O. Box 302, Hebron, ME 04238.

Arrangements were under the direction of Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, South Paris.
