Hilda Jean Fish
2001-03-01

Hilda Jean Fish, 71, of Boothbay Harbor and Fort Lauderdale, Florida, died Sunday, February 25 at Broward General Hospital in Florida following a brief illness.

She was born October 25, 1929 in Bogalusa, Louisiana, the daughter of Guy and Velma Curtis.

Mrs. Fish graduated from Northwestern University in 1950.

She married Robert Fish of Boothbay Harbor in 1954.

She and her husband owned and operated Cap'n Fish's Boat Trips and Cap'n Fish's Motel & Marina in Boothbay Harbor.

Mrs. Fish enjoyed traveling and spending time with her family.

She was predeceased by a sister, Nancy Nicklen.

Besides her husband, she is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, John and Diane Fish of Southport and Fort Lauderdale; a daughter, Katherine Fish of Boothbay Harbor; a grandson, Zachary; a granddaughter, Taylor; and a brother, Guy Curtis, of Bogalusa, Louisiana.

There will be a private service in May. Donations in Jean's memory may be made to the Boothbay Region Humane Society or the American Cancer Society.

Ivan W. Flye
2000-11-30

Ivan Walter Flye, 84, died Thursday, November 23, at Glen Ridge in Augusta, after a long illness.

Born in Troy, he was a son of Charles H. and Leia Bessey Flye. He graduated from Freedom Academy in 1936 and attended Lincoln Academy in Newcastle.

From 1942 to 1946, he served in the Air Force Photography division.

Mr. Flye was self-employed nearly all his working life. He was a pioneer in bait worm exporting and established Maine Bait Co. in 1940, retiring in 1985. He also operated Pictorial Studios, a Newcastle photo studio, from 1938-1987.

In 1954 he married Lucille Nash, and lived for many years on Church Street in Damariscotta.

Surviving are his wife of Damariscotta; a son, Charles A. of Greenwich, Conn.; a daughter, Martha Gault of Colorado; a stepdaughter, Judith Graffam of Round Pond; two brothers, Claude of Arizona and Robert of Ellsworth; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A graveside service was held Friday, November 24 at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Freedom. Arrangements were by Strong Funeral Home in Damariscotta.

Shirley J. Fogg
2000-10-20

Shirley J. Fogg, of Center Road in Gray, died October 9 at a Portland hospital. She was 59.

Mrs. Fogg was a pioneer for women in the construction business. In the early 1980s, shortly after her husband became disabled, Mrs. Fogg started Warren's General Contracting. It was one of the first woman-owned general contracting companies established with federal assistance.

She worked eight years to build Warren's General Contracting into a multimillion dollar enterprise, handling such projects as an excavation and drainage project on Interstate 95.

Eventually, disability forced her to leave the business.

She is survived by her husband, Mark Fogg; two daughters, Mrs. Charles (Diane) Brady, of Mesa, Arizona, and Mrs. Frank (June) Palmer, of Raymond; a son, Kaile R. Warren, Jr., of South Portland; a brother, Lucien Plummer, of Freeport; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Her first husband, Kaile. R. Warren, Sr., died in 1992.

William D. Forbes Sr.
2000-08-10

William D. Forbes Sr., 71, Portland, died Tuesday, August 8 at Mercy Hospital in Portland after a lengthy illness.

Born in Boothbay Harbor, he was a son of David and Mildred Mae Boulier Forbes. He moved to Portland as an infant and attended schools there. He was a Portland resident for most of his life.

Mr. Forbes was an Army veteran of the Korean War. For more than 20 years he worked for Bliss-Richardson Shoe Co., retiring when the company closed in 1975.

He was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans' South Portland chapter and attended the Rootcellar Home Church in Portland. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, walking and visiting with his many friends.

His wife, Nancy L. Belanger Forbes died in 1998.

Surviving are a son, William D. Jr. of North East Palm Bay, Fla.; a daughter, Julie Ann Forbes Cram; a brother, Freeman B. Forbes Sr.; and two sisters, Virginia M. Lane and Janet V. Seavey, all of Portland; and one granddaughter.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, August 10 at Hay & Peabody Funeral Home in Portland with the Rev. Dwayne A. Hopkins officiating. Burial will follow at Brooklawn Memorial Park in Portland.

Donald C. Forbes
2000-09-28

Donald C. Forbes, 57, of Woolwich, died unexpectedly on Friday, September 22 at Midcoast Hospital in Brunswick.

Born February 6, 1943 in Caribou, he was the son of William E. and Florence (Dickinson) Forbes.

Since 1978 he was employed at Bath Iron Works in various positions and was a strong supporter of Local 6, a national machinists union. Before that he was a member of several law enforcement agencies in New England. For nearly 25 years he was an antiques dealer and auctioneer. A regular feature at his auctions was the basket passed through rows of attendees to collect funds for the Make A Wish Foundation. He personally matched the high bid for each collection. He taught classes on becoming familiar with antiques in Gardiner and Wiscasset.

Mr. Forbes served as fire chief in Woolwich for nine years and was instrumental in construction of the North End Fire Station. He was a certified appraiser in the Appraisers Guide of America.

At the time of his death he was president of Maine Auctioneers Association. He was a member of the Polar Star Lodge of Masons in Bath and the Masonic Lodges in Waterville, Lewiston and Portland.

His favorite pastimes were restoring furniture and gardening. He and his wife won awards for their flower gardens at their residence in Woolwich.

He and his wife Lurene (Sawtelle) were married on May 24, 1969 in Oakland.

Besides his wife Lurene Forbes of Woolwich, he is survived by his mother Florence Forbes of Waterville; four daughters, Mrs. Gregory (Donna) Hartan of South Windsor, Conn., Mrs. Richard (Debbie) Donati of Coventry, Conn., Mrs. Robert (Heather) Belanger of Topsham, and Jennifer Forbes and her fiancÈ Tom Reno both of West Bath; five grandchildren; five brothers and sisters; several aunts; uncles, cousins, nephews and a special friend, Tony Gatti of Wiscasset.

A funeral service was held Tuesday, September 26 at the Mayo, Curtis Funeral Home. A gathering for friends and family was held at the family home in Woolwich after the services. Friends wishing to make memorials to Mr. Forbes may do so at Make A Wish Foundation, 97 Elm Street, Suite 203, Camden, ME 04843.

Michael Fowler, 44

Michael H. Fowler, 44, formerly of Gray, died July 14 in Clearwater, Florida, after a brief illness.

He was born in Portland, a son of Andrus H. and Joyce Boucher Fowler. He was a sheet metal contractor.

He is survived by his mother, Joyce Boucher Fowler Ronco, and grandmother, Martha E. Boucher, both of Gray; his wife, Sharon Fowler, of Houston, Texas; three sons, Michael Jr., of South Paris, Mathew, of Oxford, and Willard, of Houston; his father, of Naples; and a brother, Jeffrey A., of Bridgton.

A memorial Mass was celebrated on Tuesday at St. Gregory's Catholic Church, Gray, with the Monsignor Robert Lavoie officiating. Burial is in Gray Village Cemetery. Arrangements were by Dolby Funeral Home.

Eileene Y. Foye
2000-11-30

Eileene Yarbrough Foye, 85, died Saturday, November 18 at her home in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Born January 19, 1915 in Thomasville, Georgia, she was the daughter of Thomas and Belle Knowlton Yarbrough.

She attended and graduated from Bridge Academy in Dresden. In 1933 she married Delmas Leighton and together they made their home in Dresden raising their two children, Charles and John.

For 18 years, she ran the Cozy Corner Restaurant in Wiscasset, which was known all over the country. She then moved to Florida and worked in the largest hotels in St. Petersburg. She spent one winter working in Juneau, Alaska.

She loved to travel, take cruises and cook. Her family said that she was a wonderful cook.

Later she remarried Sam Foye who passed away in 1950.

Mrs. Foye was predeceased by her son, Charles Leighton; second husband, Sam Foye; and brother, Commander Herbert Yarbrough.

Survivors include one son, John Leighton and his wife Sharon of Washington, Maine; two sisters, Alice Merry and Arvilla Ames, both of Wiscasset; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service was held Monday, November 27 at the Pine Grove cemetery in Dresden with Pastor Kendall Dunton officiating.

Arrangements were by Hall Funeral Home in Waldoboro.

There will be a memorial service for Jean Fraher on Saturday, May 5 at 3 p.m. at the Second Congregational Church of Newcastle.

George Freeman, Jr.

George Leonard Freeman, Jr., 87, of Gray, died October 10 at his home.

He was born in Portland, a son of George L. and Annie Kimball Freeman, Sr. He graduated from Syracuse University.

He was founder and owner of Freeman Welding Supply.

Mr. Freeman was a member of First Congregational Church of Gray, the Lions Club, the Kiwanis Club, the Woodfords Merchant Assocation, the Missions Board of Woodfords Congregational Church, Gray Senior Housing and the Gray cemetery Association. He also was American Tree Farm owner.

He is survived by his wife, Theresa C. Freeman; four daughters, Gail F. Reeve, of Portland, Lynn Robbins, of Bath, Judith C. Longshore, of Arcata, CA, and Joanne C. Keir, of Watertown, MA; two sisters, Emily Sanford, of Mount Vernon, NY, and Alice Muchnic, of Kennebunk; seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Ellen Fahlen
2002-10-24

Ellen Fahlen, 92, formerly of Boothbay Harbor and of Rockport, Mass. and Military Lane in Litchfield, Maine died Friday evening, October 18, at the Bodwell Rehabilitation Center in Brunswick.

Born in Farsund, Norway on November 22, 1909, she was a daughter of Einer and Elaine Andersen Abrahamsen.

She was educated in the Bronx, N.Y. schools, graduated from George Washington High School and attended two years at the Becker Business School in Bronx N.Y. She was employed at J. P. Morgan Company on Wall Street, New York, N.Y. and at Bankers Trust and Dominic & Dominic in New York City.

Mrs. Fahlen was a member of the Pigeon Cove Circle and its treasurer for seven years and a board member for many years. She was a member of the Village Improvement Society and Spiral Lodge in Rockport, Mass. Her husband Lars A. Fahlen, who died 1993, predeceased her.

Survivors include her daughter, Elaine Ida Stinson and her husband John of Rockport, Mass. and Litchfield; a grandson, David G. Stinson and his wife Ruth of Bath; great-granddaughter Samantha Stinson and a great-grandson John David Stinson both of Bath.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, October 26 at 2 p.m. at the family lot in Riverside cemetery Days Ferry Woolwich.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Pigeon Cove, Circle 6, Breakwater Ave., Rockport, MA 01966. Arrangements are under the care of Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave. in Gardiner.
