Dian Gaeth, Nicholas Rehbock, Rebecca Rehbock
1998-03-26

Dian Gaeth, age 45, of Stratford, Connecticut, died on Wednesday, March 11, 1998 in her home with her cherished children, Nicholas, age 12 and Rebecca, age 9.

Born in Omaha, Nebraska, Dian had been a Stratford resident for the last 12 years and a Stamford, Connecticut resident prior to that time. She attended Mount Ida Junior College and Boston College. Dian was active in fund-raising for the Juvenile Diabetes Association. Becca and Nick were adopted from Columbia by Dian and her former husband, David Rehbock.

Survivors include her beloved mother and brother, Maggie Rogers of Wiscasset, Richard Rogers Gaeth and his wife Pamela of Nobleboro; her niece Brittany; and nephew Alexander Gaeth; her best friend, Peter Dusseau of Weston, Connecticut; two aunts, Ruth Rogers Serfling of Vero Beach, Florida and Jane Rogers Hughes Barton, Summit, New Jersey; as well as three step-sisters and one stepbrother. She was predeceased by her father, Ricahrd Allen Gaeth and her stepmother, Margaret Stewart Gaeth of Bath.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 4, 1998, at 10 a.m. at St. Philip's Church, Hodge Street, Wiscasset. After the service, Dian's ashes will be scattered at Pemaquid Point.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, 16 Forest Street, New Canaan, CT 06840, or to St. Philip's Church, Hodge Street, Wiscasset, ME 04578.

Elizabeth Emily Gallant, 75
2000-09-15

Elizabeth Emily "Barbara" Gallant, 75, died September 4 at a Portland hospital.

Born in Lynn, Mass., she was a daughter of Martin and Francis Stevens Dolan, and attended local schools.

Mrs. Gallant was a 38-year member of Gray Unit American Legion Auxiliary, Cabane 1003, 40 and 8, the Senior Citizens of North Yarmouth, Extension of North Yarmouth and St. Gregory's Parish, Gray.

She was previously a member of the Parent Teacher Association and Fireman Auxiliary.

Her husband of 43 years, Clifford H. Gallant, Sr., died November 10, 1987.

Surviving are five sons, Clifford, Jr., of Portland, Thomas, of Waldoboro, Kenneth, of Kennebunkport, Steven, of Westbrook and Scott, of Gray; two daughters, Gaye G. Prescott, of Westbrook and Elaine M. Gallant, of North Yarmouth; two brothers, William and Richard Dolan, both of Revere, Mass.; a sister, Doris Christie, of Revere, Mass.; 16 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Funeral arrangements were by Wilson Funeral Home, 24 Shaker Road, Gray, Maine.

Blanche L. McDonald Gagne
1998-04-02

Blanche L. McDonald Gagne, 80, of Bucknam Oaks., Mechanic Falls died Monday, March 23, 1998, at Stephens Memorial Hospital.

She was born in Ridlonville, June 12,1917, the daughter of Fred and Mary Lefebvre St. Cyr.

She attended Rumford schools and for many years worked in Lewiston-Auburn shoe shops. Mrs. Gagne was a member of the Minot Corner Methodist Church and United Methodist Women, Oxford Grange 446, Dwinal Chapter #28, Order of the Eastern Star, Colfax Rebekah Lodge #27 and Tri-Town Senior Citizens. She was known for knitting mittens for children in Mechanic Falls, Minot and Poland schools as well as for the Salvation Army. She married Michael McDonald February 27,1954. He died July 2,1981; she then married Henry Gagne, Jr., on April 10, 1982; he died December 14,1989.

Survivors include two sons, Donat Tremblay of Lisbon and Michael P. McDonald of Rumford; one sister, Jeanette Paulin of Rumford; eight grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Mrs. Gagne was pre-deceased by a daughter, Annette Adley, of Rumford and two sisters.

Family and friends may attend graveside services later in the spring at Mt. Auburn Cemetery, Auburn. The time and date will be announced later. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make memorial gifts in her memory to the Salvation Army, Park Street, Lewiston. Arrangements under the direction of Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Mechanic Falls.

Adam Galuza
1999-07-08

Adam Galuza, 82, Woolwich, died July 4 at Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta.

He was born in Mexico, Me. on Aug. 24, 1916, the son of Jerry and Melvina Galuza.

He attended Rumford schools and worked as a lumberman and trapping for fur. He worked on the Kennebec River installing water pipe, and then for a company that built track for #5 crane at Bath Iron Works. In 1940 he began working at BIW.

In 1945, during World War II, he entered the Navy. He served in Japan and was there one-and-a-half weeks after the A- bomb fell.

After an honorable discharge he returned to work as a lumberman and also as a blacksmith. Mr. Galuza spent from 1957 to 1962 in Alaska panning for gold. He returned to BIW where he was an engineer rigger until retiring in 1979. Mr. Galuza was also a boxer for many years.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bath, the Smith Tobey American Legion in Bath, a former member of the Woolwich and West Bath granges, one of the first members of the Benedict Arnold Historical Society, and a member of the Woolwich Fish Commissioners.

He enjoyed whittling, carving, making insects out of wood and several other projects with wood, and making fireplaces out of rocks. He collected rocks, and panned for gold across the entire U.S. He drew pictures that have been displayed in museums in Rockland and he enjoyed volunteering with the Boy Scouts. He liked to play the harmonica and concertina and would go to local nursing homes and Togus Hospital to do so. He enjoyed cooking, making wine and farming.

He is survived by his wife, Lilliace Galuza of Woolwich; four daughters, Mrs. Gerald (Joan) Jordan of Woolwich, Juanita Jean Ponziani of West Bath, Donna Louise Morris of Westport Island, and Yvonne May Stanton of Woolwich; one son, Gerald Francis Ames Galuza of Woolwich; two brothers, Walter Galuza of Topsham and Albert Galuza of Garden Grove, Cal.; one sister, Claudia DeMonte of Brunswick; 11 grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; six-step great- grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be from 3-5 p.m and 7-9 p.m. Wed., July 7 at Mayo, Curtis & Hill Funeral Home, 819 High St., Bath, with a Legion service at 7 p.m. and a Ladies Sodality service at 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Thurs., July 8, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Lincoln St., Bath, with the Rev. Joseph McKenna officiating. Burial will follow in Riverside cemetery in Woolwich.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Maine Head Injury Association, Farmingdale 04344; the Woolwich Central School, Nequasset Rd., Woolwich 04579; or to a charity of one's choice.

Howard W. Galvin
1999-01-14

Howard W. Galvin, 86, of Sarasota, Florida, died Thursday, January 7 at Sarasota Memorial Hospital in Sarasota, Fla.

Born October 19, 1912 in Worcester, Mass., he was the son of John and Anna Cram Galvin. He graduated from North High School in Worcester, attended Amherst College and graduated from Clark University in Worcester.

Mr. Galvin was the office manager and travel agent at Thomas Cook and Sons Travel Agency in Boston. For many years, he lived in Framingham, Mass.

He spent his summers in Southport and winters in Sarasota, Fla. He had two homes on Southport, one on Dogfish Head Road and one on Davids Island. He was a member of the Southport United Methodist Church and the Bayview Masonic Lodge A.F. & A.M.

Mr. Galvin was predeceased by his wife, Jean Clifford Galvin.

Survivors include a brother-in-law, Frank Clifford of Damariscotta; a sister-in-law, Norma Smith of Shapleigh; a niece, Robin Farrin of Boothbay; a nephew, Barry Smith of Southport; cousins, grandnieces and grandnephews.

The funeral service will be held at the Southport United Methodist Church in Southport in the spring. Burial will be in the Sprucelawn cemetery in Southport. Arrangements are by Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.

Russell W. Gamage
1999-08-12

Russell Gamage, 81, passed away June 14 in Playa del Rey, Cal.

He was born Sept. 24, 1917 in Provincetown, Mass., the son of Rosswell and Roxie Hanna Gamage. He graduated from high school in Fairhaven, Mass., received a B.S. in M.E. from the University of Maine in 1939 and an M.S. in C.E. from the University of Conn. in 1943. He was a member of a two-year engineering student training course at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in East Hartford, Conn. (1939-1942), following which he transferred to the Research Division of the Untied Aircraft Corporation (1943-1950).

From 1951 to 1953 he worked for Sverdrup & Parcel Consulting Engineers as the Aerodynamic Group Leader for the design and construction of the Propulsion Wind Tunnel at the Arnold Engineers Development Center, Tullahoma, Tenn. This was a short- term position after which he and his family could have moved to Tennessee, but Russell chose to change positions and go to Northrop Aircraft Corporation in Los Angeles.

While there he was a member of the Propulsion Group in the Advanced Design Section. He designed and directed construction of a 2000 horsepower subsonic wind tunnel and an Inlet and Duct Test Facility, and was also involved in the production of the Stealth bomber.

In 1964 he formed his own company, the Dunamis Company, for the purpose of proving the feasibility of his new engine concept, the Gamage engine, including design, construction and testing of two engine configurations.

He leaves his wife of almost 58 years, Bernice Smith Gamage, his daughter Cherry Gamage O'Connell and her husband Raymond O'Connell, his son Russell Raymond Gamage and his wife Terry Rice Gamage, and two grandchildren, David and Lynelle Gamage.

Second marriages of both daughter and son added ten more grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild. He leaves three nephews and their wives: James and Marilyn Alexander, David and Blanche Alexander, and Wells and Maureen Anderson. He also leaves one nephew, Wayne Anderson and two nieces and their husbands: Susan and Charles Reed and Kristin and Rick Johnson, and cousins beyond count, many still in the New Harbor and Round Pond areas.

The Gamages lived in California for 45 years, but New Harbor, Christmas Cove and Round Pond were still "home."

A memorial service will be held at the Round Pond United Methodist Church on Sat., Aug. 28 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made in Gamage's name to the Round Pond United Methodist Church, Round Pond, ME 04564 or to Miles Memorial Health Care, Bristol Rd., Damariscotta 04543.

Carolyn I. Gamage
1998-12-03

Carolyn I. Gamage, 64, of Southport, died at her home on November 21.

Born April 14, 1934, she was the daughter of Jesse Lee and Elizabeth B. Inabinet in Rockland.

Mrs. Gamage went to work for the telephone company in Tenants Harbor upon graduating from high school. She later went to Portland to work as a telephone operator. Retiring from the telephone company, she moved to Southport with her husband Weston E. Gamage Jr. For thirty years she worked as a postal clerk and later as postmaster of the Newagen Post Office.

Mrs. Gamage served the Town of Southport as Deputy Treasurer, and from 1976-1980 as Town Treasurer.

She was an active member of the community and church. Much of her strength and energies were devoted to her church, Sunday School teaching and Christian Women's Organization.

She was predeceased by her husband Wes in 1996.

Survivors include her son, Gerald L. Gamage of Newagen; a daughter, Julie A. Gamage of Bedford, New Hampshire; two stepchildren, David A. Gamage of Jay, and Debra J. Morrill of Orrington; her mother, Elizabeth Inabinet of St. George; one brother, Peter J. Peterson of Corona, Calif.; and three grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, December 6 at 2 p.m. at the Boothbay Baptist Church. Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 52 Federal Street, Brunswick, ME 04011. Arrangements are by Simmons, Harrington & Hall, Boothbay.

Robert L. Gammon
1998-12-24

LEWISTON - Robert L. Gammon, 63, of Oxford died Thursday December 17, 1998 at the Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston as a result of an accident.

He was born at Amesbury, MA on March 19, 193,5 the son of Francis and Ella Johnson Gammon. He was a graduate of South Paris High School in 1954.

He had worked for many years as a receiver accepting inventory and distributing to the various departments at the Oxford Homes Manufacturing Plant.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in South Paris. He was an avid sportsman. He was involved in basketball, baseball, football, and loved to fish. He was involved with numerous children's programs in the Oxford Hills area and was considered a friend to all. He enjoyed helping and coaching young people and loved umpiring. His children described him as a great dad.

He served his country in the United States Army, reenlisting in 1965 to go to Viet Nam.

He has lived in the Oxford area for many years. He married the former Elaine Green on October 23, 1970. He is survived by his wife of Oxford; four sons, Jamie Libby of West Paris, Pat Libby and Darrin Libby both of Oxford, Brent Gammon of Norway; a daughter, Tara Gammon of Oxford; 11 grandchildren; a brother, Larry of Portland; three sisters, Eleanor Hunt of Portland, Bertha Blackstone of Freeport, and Marilyn Clark of South Paris.

Services were held Tuesday at the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Norway with Rev. Frank Jewitt of the Oxford Advent Christian Church officiating.

Howard Francis Gardner
1998-07-23

Howard Francis Gardner, 82, died July 20, 1998, at the Clover Manor Nursing Home in Auburn He was born Sept. 15, 1915, in South Waterford, the son of Horace M and Mary (Hamlin) Gardner, He attended Waterford Grammar School and graduated from Bridgton Academy in 1934.

On December 27, 1941, he married Edith G, Holt of Norway. On January 18, 1941, he entered the Army, going with the first group of draftees from Oxford County. He saw active duty in Central Europe, Rhineland, including Germany, and was discharged Nov. 13, 1945 with the rank of T5 with Cannon Co., 264th Infantry.

From 1947 to 1972 he was yard foreman at the Paris Manufacturing Co, in South Paris. Mr. Gardner was an expert dry kiln operator, and after his retirement he returned part time to Paris Manufacturing to supervise the operation of the dry kiln, From 1972 until 1978 he was janitor and messenger for the Norway National Bank.

For 40 years he resided on High Street in South Paris, moving to the Waterford Road in Norway in 1985, On December 8, 1997 he moved to the Turner Square Apartments in Turner. He was a member of the South Paris Baptist Church, He enjoyed camping for many years. He loved to be in the woods among the trees. He loved his poodle `Cami' who was his devoted companion.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years of Turner; a son, Bruce and friend Alexandria Caruso, of Port Lucie, FL; a daughter, Ruth, and husband Stephen Higgins of Oakland, a daughter Barbara, and husband Lauri Kyllonen of Oxford; nine grandchildren, Lisa and husband Robert Fahey of Bangor, Brian and wife Karen Gardner of Greer, South Carolina, Christopher and wife Phoenicia Higgins of Bangor, Kathleen and husband Wayne Cunningham of Oakland, Rebecca Higgins and fiancee Michael Blakely of Windsor Locks, CN., Jeremy Smith and friend Stacey Downs of Augusta, Jennifer Smith of Augusta, Jason and Julie Smith of Oxford; three step-grandchildren, Jason Kyllonen of Paris, Jeffrey Kyllonen of Augusta, and Candi Whitman of Cochranton, PA; six great grandchildren, Kelsey and Andrew Fahey, Abigayle and Mitchell Gardner, Chase and Jared Cunningham and several step-great grandchildren. He is also survived by three brothers, Loren Gardner of Norway, Edwin Gardner of East Waterford and Ralph Gardner of Harrison and two sisters, Annie Gardner of South Waterford and Agnes Howe of Norway

A private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions may be sent to the .Androscoggin Home Health Hospice, P.0,Box 819, 15 Strawberry St., Lewiston, ME 04243 in his memory. Arrangements are under the care of the Meader & Son Funeral Home, Norway.
