Mrs. Priscilla M. Currier

BETHEL - Priscilla M. Currier, 74, of Bethel died Sunday, December 5 at Ledgeview Living Center.
She was born in West Paris on June 5, 1930, the daughter of Arthur C. and Inez May Estes Hart. She attended schools in West Sumner and South Woodstock. In the 1960s she had been employed at Ecko Housewares in Locke Mills. She had been a homemaker all of her life. She loved her grandchildren, animals and was the best pumpkin pie maker. She was a member of the PTA and the Grange in West Paris. She married Ivory Currier, Sr. on October 23, 1948 in Sumner; he preceded her in death.
She is survived by two sons, Ivory, Jr. and his wife Yvette Currier and Edward Currier, all of East Bethel; a daughter, Rosalie Conant and her husband Larry of Sumner; seven grandchildren; one step-grandson; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Lillian Osgood and her husband Francis of Berlin, NH and a brother, Warren Hart and his wife Muriel of Ledgeview Living Center in West Paris.
Graveside services will be held on Thursday, December 9 at 1 p.m. at Mt. Will Cemetery in Bethel. Family and friends may attend visitation on Thursday from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at Greenleaf Funeral Home, 37 Vernon Street, Bethel. Remembrance donations can be made to the American Cancer Society, 1 Main St., Topsham, ME 04086.

Mr. Leon H. Noyes

WICHITA FALLS, TX - Leon H. Noyes passed away unexpectedly on January 28, at his home in Wichita Falls, TX.

Mr. Noyes attended Oxford Hills High School from 1979 to 1982, and graduated from Portsmouth High School in New Hampshire in 1983. Upon graduation he entered the United States Air Force and served until he was honorably discharged in 1994. He went on to earn his Bachelor's degree and was a special education teacher from 2000 to 2004.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Patricia Anne Noyes. He is survived by his wife Sammie; daughters Amber, Karshia and Olivia; father Leon H. Noyes, sister Lynn Haley and grandfather Haynes F. Noyes.

Mr. David Ted Proctor

PORTLAND - David Ted Proctor, 51, died March 23, 2005 at Maine Medical Center.

He was born in Bridgton on February 18, 1954, a son of Royce L. and Earlyne M. Proctor (Applebee) and graduated from Lake Region High School in 1972.

Mr. Proctor was a carpenter for over 35 years, working for numerous building contractors in the area. He enjoyed most outdoor activities, especially snowmobiling. His family and friends will sadly miss him.

He is survived by his loving companion, Joyce Shaffner; two younger brothers, Dana R. Proctor and Jon E. Proctor; two nephews and two nieces.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, April 2, at the VFW Hall in Harrison, from 2 to 5 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations in Mr. Proctor's memory to the Harvest Hills Animal Shelter, where he found his faithful dog Jesse.

Mr. Arthur Robert Gilbert

WEST BETHEL - Arthur Robert Gilbert, 88, of West Bethel, died at the Ledgeview Living Center on Wednesday April 6, 2005.

He was born in West Bethel on December 31, 1916, the son of Robert Arthur and Lona (McLellan) Gilbert. He attended Bethel schools and graduated from Gould Academy class of 1935.

He was an Army veteran of WWII, having served with the 363rd Engineer SS Regiment with the Persian Gulf Command. He was a member of the American Legion Post # 81 of Bethel and the VFW Post # 2520 of Berlin, NH. He married Ruth Walker on August 12, 1945.

Mr. Gilbert was Post Master in West Bethel from 1969 to 1978. He was a member of the West Bethel Union Church, Locke Mills Fish and Game Club, Pleasant Valley Grange and had been a selectman for the Town of Bethel from 1986-1995 and served on the Board of Assessors. He received the Bethel area Chamber of Commerce Senior Citizen Award in 1992 and the Bethel Area Chamber of Commerce Citizenship award in 1982.

He enjoyed painting pictures and making stained glass lights, carpentry, hunting, fishing, tying flies and gardening. He was especially fond of spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mr. Gilbert is survived by his wife of 59 years of West Bethel; three daughters, Sheila Head of West Bethel, Rowena Stowell and her husband Jonathan of Shirley, MA and Roberta Norton and her husband Kevin of Madrid; one brother, Shirley Gilbert and his wife Marilyn of West Bethel; two sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Gilbert of West Bethel and Elizabeth Gilbert of Bethel; five grandchildren, Jane Rottari and her husband Robert of New Gloucester, Marietta Chiras and her husband Richard of Northbridge, MA, Melanie Stowell of Bedford, NH, Nathan Stowell of Shirley, MA and Casandra Perez of Madrid and Savannah GA and three great-grandchildren, Leah Rottari, Olivia Rottari and Josiah Rottari all of New Gloucester. He was predeceased by three brothers, Keith, Randall and George and one son-in-law, Arthur Head.

Visiting hours were held at the Greenleaf Funeral Home, 37 Vernon Street, Bethel on Friday evening, April 8, from 6-8 p.m. Memorial services were held at the West Bethel Union Church on Saturday, April 9 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Earl Bell officiating.

Mr. Robert S. Lundquist

PORTLAND - Robert S. Lundquist of Bolsters Mills village in Otisfield passed away peacefully with his wife at his side on Friday, May 6, 2005 at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

He was born in Somerville, MA, January 25, 1930, the son of Gerta and Gus Lundquist.

He served in the US Army in Germany during the Korean War.

After the service, for a time he was a sheet metal roofer, working on many historical churches in the Boston area. He also drove for the MTA in Boston. Eventually, following his hobby of photography, he became a photo technician, retiring from Charrette Corp. after 25 years.

Having lived in Ipswich, MA for 40 years, he and his wife moved to Otisfield in 1999.

Mr. Lundquist had two things he was passionate about - his family and animals of all kinds, especially all the cats and dogs he had over a lifetime.

He will be remembered as a kind and considerate man, always smiling with a funny saying to pass on to make you smile.

Mr. Lundquist is survived by his wife of 30 years, Nancy Lundquist; a stepson Neil Larrivee, wife Nancy and three sons, Derek, Craig and Mark, all of Norwood, MA; a stepdaughter Lisa Larrivee and her son Josh O'Neal of Nottingham, NH; three nephews, Leo Lundquist, wife Tina and two children of Sanford, Alden Waitte of California and Warren Kelleher, wife Donna and their son of Haverhill, MA; a niece, Lynn Hennessy and husband Tom of Woburn, MA; a sister-in -law Kathy Kelleher of Ipswich, MA; and his four-legged friends, Hobbs, Sasha, Scratchy, Jasper and Zeus.

He was predeceased by his two brothers, John Lundquist and Norman Lundquist and one sister, Lillian Waitte.

Remembrance donations may be made to: Responsible Pet Care of Oxford Hills, Norway Lake Rd., Norway, ME 04268.

A memorial celebration of his life will be held in September.

Charles E. Curtis, MSgt USAF (Ret.)

TEMPLE HILLS, MD - On September 22, 2005, Charles E. Curtis of Temple Hills, MD died after 45 years of selfless service to the United States Air Force with Hazardous Overseas duty in Pakistan and Southeast Asia. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Ila of Oxford and his brother Richard, Jr. of Oklahoma.

Mr. Curtis is survived by his son, David Curtis of Fayetteville, NC; four brothers, George and his wife Elaine of Oxford, Harvey of Lancaster, NH, Daniel and his wife Linda of Oxford and Russell and his wife Cynthia of Bolsters Mills and two sisters, Marianne Fifield and her companion Keith Swan of Bryant Pond and Geri and her husband Ivan Smith of Buckfield. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Renee Elisse Curtis and Janelle Marie Curtis of Hudson, MA.

A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, October 2 at 1 p.m. at the Oxford Hills Funeral Service, Rt. 26, Oxford. Friends may call at the Arlington Funeral Home, 3901 N. Fairfax Dr., Arlington, VA on Monday, October 17 from 6 to 8 p.m. A Funeral Service will be held at Arlington Funeral Home on Tuesday, October 18 at 12 p.m. Interment will follow at Arlington National Cemetery.

Mr. Ernest Edmund Brown, Sr., 'Joe'

SOUTH PARIS - Ernest Edmund Brown, Sr., "Joe," 78, of South Paris died Thursday, October 13 at Stephens Memorial Hospital with his loving family by his side.

He was born in Hartford on July 14, 1927, the son of Joseph and Clara M. Dyer Brown. He spent most of his childhood in Sumner and Buckfield. He joined the U. S. Marine Corps on September 28, 1945. He worked at local factories and in the woods. He retired from C. B. Cummings. His hobbies were fishing, hunting and spending time with his dog Duke.

Mr. Brown is survived by his children, Dawn Lee of North Carolina, Roberta and James Zinchuck of Oxford, Robyn and Tom Cary of Oxford, Heidi and Dan Tracy of South Paris and Ernest Brown, Jr. of South Paris; two stepchildren, Eldon Bartlett and Sally Bartlett; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Josephine Brown; a son, James Brown; a granddaughter, Wendy Tracy and a stepson, Andrew Bartlett.

A graveside service was held on Monday, October 17 at 2 p.m. at Riverside Annex Cemetery in South Paris. Family and friends attended visiting hours on Sunday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Weston Chandler Funeral Home, 45 Main St., South Paris.

Mrs. Jalna F. Smith

OXFORD - Jalna F. Smith, 76, of Oxford died on Friday, December 9, 2005 at Maine Medical Center. She was born in Norway on August 25, 1929, the daughter of George and Marion Putnam Merrill. She worked at B.E. Cole for many years and helped her husband Al Smith, who passed away in 1999, managing Al's Variety in Oxford. They also ran a hot dog stand and prepared lunches for the local Oxford businesses.

The last years of her life have been enjoyed with Lindley Fortier who brought love, smiles, sharing, traveling, and togetherness to her life. Jalna loved to jitterbug, enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing, going to Moosehead Lake, reading, puzzles and a love for flowers. Her daughters remember traveling with her, shopping, pool parties, and just talking on the back deck.

Her daughters, her loving companion, her niece and friends shared the sacred space of her passing.

Mrs. Smith is survived by her daughters, Paula Adams of Oxford, Carol Lessard of South Paris and Patti Truman of Bethel; her stepchildren, Albert Smith of South Paris and Donald Smith of Oxford; her grandchildren, Darci Westleigh of Auburn, Ed Adams Jr. of Lisbon Falls, Scott Maddix of San Diego, CA and Michael Smith of South Paris; step- grandchildren, Natalie Smith of Poland, Nicole Blaquiere of Saco, Cody Smith of Oxford; great-grandchildren, Roddy, Ryan and Reid Westleigh of Auburn and Ed III and Bryce Adams of Poland; step-great-grandchildren, Albert Smith III (Little A.J.) of Poland and Mark and David Blaquiere of Saco and a niece, Raven (Debby) Merrill of South Paris.

A graveside service will be held in the Spring at the Riverside Cemetery in Oxford. There are no services scheduled at this time. Donations in memory can be made to the American Heart Assoc., P.O. Box 346, Augusta, ME 04330. Arrangements are under the direction of Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, 230 Main St., Norway.

Mrs. Shirley Maud Tomes Strong

HARTFORD, CT - Shirley Maud Tomes Strong, 99, passed away on January 30, at Avery Heights in Hartford, CT. Born October 5, 1906, to Italia Inez Purdy and George H. Tomes, Mrs. Strong graduated in 1924 from Erasmus Hall High School in Brooklyn, NY, and received a BA degree from Mount Holyoke College. She returned to Erasmus Hall to teach music.

In 1931, she married the late Dr. William B. Strong and resided in Brooklyn, Garden City, NY, and Cumberland Foreside.

Mrs. Strong served as national president of the Garden City Chapter of the AAUW, PTA and Mount Holyoke Club of Long Island. As a Girl Scout she played both the drums and bugle in the bugle corps of the first Girl Scout troop in New York City and played "Taps" at the first Armistice Day celebration in Brooklyn. She went on to assume leadership of Brownie and Girl Scouts.

With deep interest in the international community, she traveled frequently and hosted several international students. Mrs. Strong loved music, playing the piano, organ and trumpet. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Stewart Manor, NY, the UCC Woodland Church in Portland, and most recently, the Congregational Church in South Glastonbury, CT.

Mrs. Strong is survived by her three daughters, Joan S. Kearney of Syosset, NY, Shirley S. Miller of Malvern, PA, and Mirian S. Moore of Glastonbury, CT; eight grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

A celebration of her remarkable life was held at the Congregational Church in South Glastonbury on February 4, at 1:30 p.m. Contributions may be made to the William B. Strong, D.O. Memorial Scholarship Fund at New England College of Osteopathic Medicine, Biddeford, ME.
