Mrs. M. Elizabeth Gile
1999-05-20

BRIDGTON - M. Elizabeth Gile, 80, of Bridgton, died Saturday, May 15, at the Bridgton Health Care Center.

She was born in Sweden on September 19, 1918, the daughter of Morris and Mary Barker Kenison.

She attended Bridgton schools and was a homemaker. She also worked as a housekeeper of the Northern Cumberland Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Gile was a member of the Advent Christian Church and also a member and volunteer at the Senior Citizens' meal site.

She lived in Bridgton all of her life and married Alton R. Gile Sr. on December 3, 1938. He died in June of 1970.

Mrs. Gile is survived by a daughter, Norine Thomas of Bridgton and a son, Alton R. Gile Jr. of Harrison; one brother, Clifford Kenison of Bridgton; and one sister, Winona Knight of Norway; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, May 18, at the Advent Christian Church on Lower Main Street in Bridgton. Burial was in the Forest Hill cemetery in Bridgton.

Arraignments were under the care of the Raymond-Wentworth Funeral Home.

Contributions may be made in Mrs. Gile's memory to the American Diabetes Association Maine Affiliate, 8 Crosby Street, Augusta, ME 04338 or the Advent Christian Church, Lower Main Street, Bridgton 04009.

Marshall W. Giles
1999-12-30

Marshall Winfield Giles, 81, of Tilton, New Hampshire, died Wed-nesday, December 22 from injuries suffered in a motor vehicle-pedestrian accident after being struck in Franklin, N.H.

Born in Southport Island on May 27, 1918, he was the son of Isaac M. and Esther M. (Gray) Giles.

For 26 years he lived in the Tilton-Laconia area after spending many years in Maine. He worked for over 26 years in the parts department at Robins Auto in Laconia and Franklin. At the time of his death he was working part time at the Franklin branch.

Mr. Giles was a member of the VFW, Post #1698 in Franklin; and also a member of the American Legion Post #49 in Northfield.

His father died while on duty overseas during World War I when Mr. Giles was only six months old. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II. He was raised by his mother and step-father, Freemont S. Giles.

Survivors include his wife, Glenice E. (Chase) Giles of Tilton; one son, Lowell M. Giles of Farmingdale, Maine; three stepsons, Daniel F. Keith of Belmont, N.H., Gregory R. Keith of Tolland, Conn., and Walter L. Keith of Northfield, N.H.; two stepdaughters, Bonita J. Carnivale of Gilford, N.H., and Charlette Stoodley of Laconia, N.H.; one sister, Flora Jones of Boothbay; ten grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one aunt; one niece; and one nephew.

A memorial service was held at the VFW Post #1698 in Franklin, N.H. on Sunday, December 26. Burial and graveside services will be in Oceanview cemetery in Boothbay at a later date.

Expressions of Sympathy may be made to the New Hampshire Veterans Home, Winter Street, Tilton, NH 03276.

The William F. Smart Sr. Memorial Home of Tilton, N.H. is in charge of arrangements.

Julia L. Giles
2000-01-27

Julia L. Giles of Belmont, Mass., and Capitol Island, died on Wednesday, January 5, 2000 at St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor. She was 85. born in Atlanta, Georgia, she was the younger of two daughters of the late Pearl Gibson and Rachel Bradford Lombard. She lived in Belmont, Mass., and has summered on Capitol Island since 1947.

Mrs. Giles attended Girls' High School in Atlanta, Georgia, where she was a member of the Sunev Sorority. She was a member and past president of the Epsilon Chapter of the Beta Sigma Phi International Sorority and was vice president of the Sorority City Council. She was later employed as a secretary at Liberty Mutual Insurance Company, until meeting and marrying the late Lloyd B. Giles in 1943 and shortly thereafter moving to Belmont, Mass. After arriving in Belmont, while compassionately raising her two children, she continued to be involved in civic organizations and was a 52-year member of the Payson Park Congregational Church, serving in many capacities. Over the many seasons spent in the Boothbay Harbor area, that was loved so dearly, she could often be seen cruising the local waters with her husband Lloyd and their children, in their classic 1958 Chris Craft Welikit II, which still remains in the family.

Survivors include a son, Charles L. Giles and his wife Elaine Marie of Belmont, Mass. and Capitol Island, and a daughter, Deborah Giles Watson and her husband Donald B. Watson of Sprucewold and Capitol Island. In addition, she is survived by three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was provided by Brown & Sons Funeral Home of Belmont, Mass. and was held on Monday, January 10 at Story Chapel in Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge, Mass., followed by Interment in the Mount Auburn Cemetery.

James R. Gillis
1998-04-16

James R. "Bob" Gillis, 61, of Westport, who was active in cancer support groups, died Wednesday, April 8 at Midcoast Hospital in Brunswick after a brief illness.

Born in Watertown, Mass., a son of Alexander L. and Mary MacIsaac Gillis, he grew up in Dorchester, Boston. He attended Boston University and later served in the Army in the National Guard.

Mr. Gillis worked in various trades during his career, as a shipfitter, carpenter and ironworker. He lived in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., for 10 years during the 1970s, working for Broward County as a carpenter.

Before and after that he was a shipfitter for General Dynamics in Quincy, Mass., and later worked as a self-employed carpenter.

Mr. Gillis was a long-time cancer survivor and had been active in the Brunswick Cancer Support Group since 1990. Several years ago he was a panelist on the Cancer Society's annual Living With Cancer conference in Augusta, and has been on the planning committee for that event the past two years.

He was first diagnosed with cancer of the larynx in 1988. A few years later he had tongue cancer.

Mr. Gillis enjoyed aviation, and he was a member of the local chapter of the Experimental aviation Association and the Owls Head Transportation Museum.

Mr. Gillis' ancestry is traced to Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, and he vacationed there every summer.

He loved dogs, and most recently enjoyed the company of his Dalmatian, Mocchan.

He married the former Deborah Shea in Woods Hole, Mass., in 1981.

Surviving are his wife of Westport; his father of Quincy; a brother, A. Lloyd Gillis of Norwell, Mass.; a sister, Louise Potvin of Essex County, Vt.; and 12 nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grantnephews.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. April 18 at St. Mary of the Nativity Church, Scituate Harbor, Mass. A memorial service at his home in Westport will be announced later. Arrangements are by Brackett Funeral Home.

Mr. Walter Ernest Goding
2000-01-06

RUMFORD - Walter Ernest Goding, 87, died Sunday, January 2, at the Rumford Community Hospital in Rumford.

Mr. Goding had been a resident of the Victorian Villa Nursing Home in Canton since October of 1999, and was formerly a resident of the Hacketts Mill Road in Poland for many years.

He was born in Dixfield on December 15, 1912, the son of G. Ernest and Mary (Rowe) Goding, and graduated from Dixfield High School.

During WW II he served with the U.S. Merchant Marines as an Engineer 3rd Mate.

He was a automotive mechanic and a Marine engineer for many years and later worked for the Stowell Wood products in Dixfield and Stowell Silk Spool Co. in Bryant Pond.

He was a 50-year member of the King Hiram Lodge #57, AF & AM, in Dixfield.

Mr. Goding had no known close relatives surviving.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday at the Meader & Sons Funeral Home in Rumford, with Reverend Frank Haines officiating.

Interment will be in the spring in the Greenwood cemetery in Dixfield.

Francesca Golja
2000-08-17

Francesca Golja, 94, of Boothbay Harbor, died Friday, August 11 at St. Andrews Hospital, Gregory Wing in Boothbay Harbor.

Born November 7, 1905 in Tyrolia, Austria, she was the daughter of Franz and Katharina Zacek Golja.

She grew up in Austria and Yugoslavia surviving World War I and World War II as well as three invasions in Yugoslavia by Germany, Italy and Russia.

Mrs. Golja was married to Boris Golja, a civil engineer, with whom she traveled Europe. Traveling gave her the opportunity to learn French, German, Italian, Yugoslav and Spanish, in which she was fluent. She understood some Russian and Polish and was wiser to the English language than she let anyone know. Her husband was killed during World War II and she was forced to raise her three children alone.

In 1961, she moved to the United States living in New Jersey with her granddaughter, Irena Golja Prall and her family until 1996. She then moved to Maine, spending the rest of her life in Boothbay Harbor near her granddaughter, Irena.

Sue was predeceased by two daughters, Olga Golja Drzymala, and Dannica Golja Zompetta.

Survivors include a son, Dusko Golja of Yugoslavia; a granddaughter, Irena Golja Prall and her husband Ralph of East Boothbay; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchild-ren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, August 17 at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home with the Rev. Peter Panagore officiating.

Arrangements are by Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.

Arlene B. Goodrich
2000-05-11

Arlene B. Goodrich, 92, of Winslow and Ocean Point, died Thursday, May 4, at a Waterville hospital.

Born in Canaan on October 15, 1907, she was the daughter of the late Percy H.

and Cassie (Burrill) Williams. She attended schools in Canaan, Skowhegan, and Waterville. In 1930 she graduated from Colby College.

Mrs. Goodrich taught high school in Clinton, and was a librarian in Waterville. On August 31, 1941 she married Roy R. Goodrich.

She enjoyed needlepoint and her flower garden.

Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Roy R. Goodrich of Winslow; one son, Robert R. Goodrich and his wife Susan N. of Yarmouth; three granddaughters, Karen Goodrich of New York City, Alyssa Goodrich of Somerville, Mass., and Sarah Goodrich of Yarmouth; two nieces and one nephews.

A sister Carolyn Turpie predeceased her.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Burial will be in Fairview cemetery in Canaan.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, Maine Division, 52 Federal Street, Brunswick, ME 04011.

Arrangements were by Lawry Brothers Funeral Home in Fairfield.

Mary R. Goodwillie
1999-11-11

Mary Louise (Lou) Rhodes Goodwillie, 90, of Westport Island, died Sunday, November 7 at the Frost-Inman House in Damariscotta.

Born June 14, 1909 in Portland, Oregon, she was the daughter of Ivan B. and Martha S. Rhodes. She graduated from Skidmore College in 1932 and began her career in merchandising at Macy's in New York, where she rose to cosmetics buyer. During the war she was named the first woman vice president of Bamburgers Department Store in Newark, N.J., and won the Navy E (for excellence) award for keeping the store open 24 hours a day when Navy ships were in port. Many years, later, she served as executive director of New York's oldest and largest thrift shop, which supports research on rheumatic fever at Irvington House.

In 1937 she married John Morley Goodwillie and for many years was a committed volunteer, avid gardener, and doting parent in Yorktown Heights, New York. Following her divorce in 1960, she earned a masters degree from the School of Education at Stanford University, traveled around the world by freighter, and served as Associate Dean of Admissions and Counseling at Columbia University's School of General Studies.

In 1976 she retired to Cape Cod, where she lived among a host of devoted friends and volunteered at the local Hospice Thrift Shop, until she moved to Westport in 1996 to be with her daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Bruce Stedman, who are her only survivors.

Her life will be celebrated in a garden memorial service on Westport Island next spring. If you wish to honor her memory, please send a contribution to Miles Home Health and Hospice, RR 2, Box 4500, Damariscotta, ME 04543, plant a perennial in your garden, or adopt an animal that needs a home.
