Mr. Leo C. Hemingway, Jr.
1999-07-15

NORWAY - Leo C. Hemingway, Jr. 77, of Main Street, Oxford, died early Friday morning, July 9, 1999, at Stephens Memorial Hospital, where he had been a patient for several days.

Mr. Hemingway was born in Milton Plantation, October 3, 1921,the son of the late Leo and Myra (Downing) Hemingway, but had attended Norway schools.

He had been employed as a shoe worker, worked at Bath Iron Works, and Cornwalls, from which he retired. He also owned and operated the Pine Grove Variety Store in Oxford with his wife, the former Louise Blaquiere, whom he married on August 2, 1940. She predeceased him in 1989.

Mr. Hemingway was a veteran of the U. S. Army, where he served in the European Theater of Operations, with the infantry. He had been a resident of Oxford for over a half century, most recently residing at Oxford Meadows.

Mr. Hemingway was a life member of the V.F.W. Post, of South Paris, Foster-Carroll Post of the American Legion, South Paris, and a former member of the Maine Country Music Association.

He is survived by three daughters, Lorelei and her husband, Donovan, Dodge, Sr., of South Paris, Lolalee and her husband, Gordon, Dillingham, of South Woodstock, and Lorri Parlin, of Hebron; a brother, Clyde W. Hemingway, and his wife, Lorna, of Norway; 10 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren, and seven great-great grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews, and a close friend Margaret Larrabee, of Norway.

He was predeceased by two sisters, Irma Jones, and Ava Whitman Poland, and a granddaughter Louise Ethel Hemingway.

Friends were received at the Andrews Funeral Home, South Woodstock, Sunday evening and funeral services were held at the funeral home on Monday with Interment in the Webber Brook Cemetery, Oxford.

Thomas E. Henderson

WEST SUMNER - There will be a graveside service at Pleasant Pond cemetery in West Sumner for Thomas E. Henderson, Sr., at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 26. Floyd Waterhouse will officiate.

Charles D. Herman
1998-04-16

Charles Duane Herman, 60, died at his Boothbay Harbor home on Tuesday, April 7.

A long-time resident of Kansas City, Missouri, Mr. Herman had a distinguished 20-year teaching career at C.R. Anderson School, a special inner-city alternative school serving students with academic, social and emotional problems.

He was a graduate of Wesleyan University, Middletown, Connecticut receiving his B.A. and M.A.T. degrees in English. He also completed the Ph.D. course work in English at Duke University and studied advanced photography at the Kansas City Art Institute.

He will be greatly missed by his wife, Nola Michelson Herman of Boothbay Harbor; three sons, Charles Duane Herman Jr. of Kannapolis, North Carolina, and Jamey Logan and Micah Herman, both of Kansas City, Missouri; a daughter, Bonnie Herman Detar of Cherow, South Carolina; a brother, Thomas Herman of Amarillo, Texas; and his beloved Aunt Polly Paige of Kannapolis, North Carolina.

Preparations are underway for a memorial concert to be held this summer at the family's Boothbay Harbor home celebrating Charles' life and his love for music. There will also be a private service for members of the family.

Elizabeth Jane Heron
1999-03-25

Elizabeth Jane Heron, 75, who worked for over 40 years as an RN and retired in the early 1980s, died at Bethesda Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, Md., after a short illness, on March 16.

She worked in Maryland for Holy Cross Hospital, pediatrician Dr. Carolyn Pincock, and the Great Oaks Center. She accompanied her husband on numerous US Navy assignments around the country and in Japan.

After traveling extensively, she lived in Silver Spring, Md. for over 40 years. Since the mid-1980s, she and her husband spent summers at their home in New Harbor.

Mrs. Heron was born and raised in Elmira, NY, and attended Elmira Catholic High School and St. Joseph's School of Nursing.

She was an active member and volunteer of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Silver Spring. Other volunteer activities included the Burtonsville Homemakers Club and the Circus Fans Assn.

Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Cdr. Howard Carroll Heron, USN Ret., Silver Spring, and formerly of Elmira, NY; three children, Kathleen Parker of Crofton, Md., Howard C. Heron, MD of Ormond Beach, Fla., and Eileen Anne Brock of Palm Bay, Fla.; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren; and two sisters, Loretta Essen and Margaret Cady of Elmira, NY. Another sister, Marion Cox, predeceased her.

Funeral arrangements are by Collins Funeral Home, Silver Spring, Md. Service was March 20 at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Silver Spring.

Dwinal H. Herrick
1998-03-19

Dwinal H. Herrick, 43, of Oxford died Sunday, March 15, 1998, at Stephens Memorial Hospital. He was born in Lewiston on July 21, 1954, the son of Henry G and Edith Brown Herrick. He was a graduate of Oxford Hills High School in 1972.

Mr. Herrick served our country in the U.S. Navy and was a member of the Naval Reserves upon his death. He married Eva Adamos on July 16, 1982. He had worked at Robinson Manufacturing and since 1989 had been a delivery person for the US Postal Service. Mr. Herrick was an outdoorsman who loved fishing, camping, gardening, and motorcycle rides.

He is survived by his wife Eva of Oxford; two sons, Ralph and Daniel of Oxford; a step-mother, Phyllis Herrick of Oxford; three brothers, Frank of South Paris, Murray of Oxford, and Donald of Livermore Falls; two step-sisters, Sandy Crabtree of Mechanic Falls and Linda Kimball of Poland; three-step brothers, Albert Maberry of Chesterville, Robert Maberry of Oxford, and Richard Maberry of Mechanic Falls; a mother-in-law, Paula Adamos of Oxford and several nieces and nephews.

He was pre-deceased by his parents and his step-father, Armand Pineau.

Visiting Hours are Thursday evening, March 19, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, 230 Main St., Norway. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday at the St. Mary's Church in Oxford at 2 p.m. with Father Harold Moreshead as celebrant.

Leroy Hersey

NORTH WATERFORD - Memorial Services will be held for Leroy Hersey on Thursday, June 11,1998 at 11 a.m. at the N. Waterford Congregational Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Norway.

Carroll B. Hewitt
1999-06-10

Carroll Banks Hewitt, 80, of Wiscasset, died Tuesday, May 25, in Phoenix, Arizona, on his way to his granddaughter's wedding.

Born December 15, 1918 in Windsor, he was the son of Edwin and Ethel Banks Hewitt.

He married Flora Hiltz Hewitt, January 3, 1950.

Mr. Hewitt attended schools in China, as well as Erskine Academy. He worked as a welder at Bath Iron Works for 43 years, retiring in 1982. He served in the 93rd Navy Seabees during World War II and attended many reunions of his unit.

He was an avid hunter and was well-known for his English Setters and Beagles.He was a member of the Waterville and Kennebec Valley Beagle Clubs. He also loved baseball and enjoyed watching all ages and leagues. He was a member of the First Congregational Church, UCC and the American Legion, Post #54, both in Wiscasset.

Survivors include his wife of Wiscasset; two daughters, Shirley Peverly of York, and Barbara Gagnon of Damariscotta; a son, David of Newcastle; a brother, Maynard of Windsor; four granddaughters; one grandson; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a grandson, David Jr.; a sister, Shirley Nichols; and a brother, Elwyn.

Graveside services were held Saturday, June 5 at the Chadwick Hill Cemetery, South China. Arrangements were under the direction of the Strong Funeral Home, Damariscotta. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wiscasset First Congregational Church, UCC, or Wiscasset High School, for baseball equipment for a deserving student.

Marion E. Higgins
1998-12-03

Marion Evelyn Higgins, 97, of Boothbay Harbor, died Thursday, November 26 at St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor.

Born October 29, 1901 in Boothbay Harbor, she was the daughter of Fred B. and Mary Greene Higgins. She graduated from Kents Hill Academy.

Miss Higgins was a dietitian for W.T. Grant Company in New York and she also worked for Columbia University. She often summered in Boothbay Harbor with her family, and moved here permanently when she retired.

She was a member of the Coastal Club, and an officer of the Fred B. Higgins Lobster Company. She liked to travel.

Miss Higgins was predeceased by two brothers, Fred Higgins Jr. and John Higgins; and by a sister, Gertrude Sherman.

Survivors include a nephew, Peter Sherman of Virginia; and a grandniece, Alissa Berryman of Fort Worth, Texas.

A graveside service was held on Monday, November 30 at the Evergreen cemetery in Boothbay. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Boothbay Region Humane Society. Arrangements were under the direction of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home of Boothbay.

Ray H. Higgins
1999-03-11

Ray H. Higgins, 92, a resident at Mtn. Ridge Health Care Center in Franklin, New Hampshire, died there Thursday, February 18 following a period of failing health.

Born in Mount Vernon, Maine, September 22, 1906, he was the son of Rubin and Ane (Hall) Higgins. He moved from Waldoboro to Franklin in 1991.

Mr. Higgins was employed for over 40 years with Central Maine Power and held several positions within the company, including working as a turbine operator in the control room. He later worked as a security guard at the Maine Yankee Nuclear Power Plant.

He was a former resident of Wiscasset and a member of the Wiscasset Congregational Church.

He was predeceased by his wife, Marian S. (Searles) Higgins, who died December 21, 1994.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Barbara N.) Wellington of Franklin, N.H.; two grandsons; two great-grandsons; nieces and nephews.

Mr. Higgins will be entombed in the spring at which time there will be a graveside service in Searles Mills cemetery in Chelsea.

The William F. Smart Sr. Memorial Home of Tilton is in charge. J. Douglas Smart and Scott W. Davis are the funeral directors.

George E. Higgins
1999-07-30

George Higgins, of Gray, died Sunday at a Lewiston hospital.

He was born in Gray on September 10, 1923, the son of Everett E. and Karolina Svensson Higgins.

After attending Gray schools, Mr. Higgins worked as a logger. He retired from American Can Company after thirty years. He served in the United States Army during World War II as a combat infantryman, bringing rations to the front lines. He earned a Purple Heart, Bronze Star and Good Marksman badge.

He enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing and the outdoors. He was a passionate Red Sox fan. He especially enjoyed family gatherings, and on Saturday mornings he loved to watch wrestling with his grandchildren.

Mr. Higgins was a member of Gray Post #86 American Legion.

He is survived by two sons, William Higgins, of Windham, and Richard Higgins, of Columbus, Ohio; five daughters, Patricia Combs, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Donna Rollins, of Naples, Beverly Peaco, of Vancouver, Anita Borlawsky, of Naples, and Paula Rice, of Gray; nineteen grandchildren, Cathy Roberts, Debora Roberts, Gleen Roberts, Cheryl Roberts, Clinton Combs, Jr., Bonnie Combs, Belinda Bates, Andrew Rollins, Jr., Christine Bertin, Denise Harwood, Susan Peaco, Amber Peaco, Misty Higgins, Janelle Lasciuto, Joseph Lasciuto, Michael Borlawsky, Jacquelyn Borlawsky, Emily Rice and Jordan Rice; and by nine great-grandchildren.

Arrangements were by Wilson Funeral Home, Gray.

Prescott F. Hill
1998-04-02

Prescott F. Hill of Lenox, Massachusetts and Signal Point Village, Boothbay Harbor died February 28 after a long battle with cancer.

Born in Boston on December 9, 1934, he was the son of Martha Carter Hill of Lenox and the late Warren Giddings Hill, He grew up in Padanaram, South Dartmouth, Mass., graduated from Friends Academy in New Bedford and Phillips Exeter Academy, Exeter, New Hampshire.

Mr. Hill received his A.B. in Economics from Harvard College in 1956 and took post-graduate courses in business management at Boston University. Following graduation from Harvard, he joined New England Mutual Life Insurance Company in Boston as a methods analyst. Several promotions followed and he was named Investment Officer in 1967. He joined Berkshire Life in Pittsfield, Mass. in 1969 as Vice President Mortgage Loan and Real Estate and worked in that capacity at the time of his death.

For many years he was a corporator of Berkshire Medical Center and its real estate committee, a member of the Lenox Republican Town Committee, and a former member of the Lenox Town Finance Committee.

For the past 45 years he spent much of the summer in Boothbay Harbor, where he had enjoyed power boating, sailing, and One Design racing. His love of the area started while he was a groundskeeper at Spruce Point Inn in the 1950's.

Besides his mother, he leaves his wife, the former Lois Evelyn Boon, whom he married in Rochester, New York in 1962; two sons, David Warren Hill of Groton, Mass. and Prescott Carter Hill of Lexington, Kentucky; two daughters-in-law, Krista Ingram and Karen L. Hill; and two brothers, Warren Carter Hill of North Andover, Mass. and Robert Miner Hill of Nashua, New Hampshire.

Funeral services were held at the United Methodist Church of Lenox with burial in Lenox. Donations in Prescott Hill's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society in care of Roche Funeral Home, 120 Main Street, Lenox, MA 01240 or to a charity of the donor's choice.
