Sandra C. Labaree

Sandra Cook Labaree, 53, of Wiscasset, died Monday, March 6 at Midcoast Hospital in Brunswick.

Born in Princeton, New Jersey, she graduated from Princeton High School and Beaver College in Glenside, Penn. In 1973 she moved to Maine. She was well known in the mid-coast area for her work with the American Cancer Society, her leadership in the Wiscasset business community, and for her Lifelines column in the Lincoln County News.

At the age of 27, Mrs. Labaree was diagnosed with cervical cancer. She was successfully treated and soon after became a volunteer for the American Cancer Society; a commitment that she continued for the next 24 years. She served as a member of the organization's New England Board of Directors and on the Quality of Life Committee until her death. From 1993-1995 she served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Maine Division of the American Cancer Society. In 1989, she developed the society's very successful Corvette Raffle, an annual fund-raiser that raised over $425,000.

Mrs. Labaree was the owner of Market Right, a marketing and advertising firm that she operated from her home. In 1993, she helped found the Wiscasset Regional Business Association and continued serving as its Executive Director. She was also involved in the de-commissioning of the Maine Yankee Atomic Power Company and was a member of its Citizens Advisory Panel.

In 1994, Mrs. Labaree was diagnosed with breast cancer and faced a recurrence of the disease in October of 1997. During rounds of high-dose chemotherapy treatment in early 1998, She visualized herself partaking in her favorite pastime, driving in her Chevrolet Corvette. She spent the following summer combining this love with her dedication for the American Cancer Society through the Corvettes Conquer Cancer Tour, which she organized. Over four months, Mrs. Labaree and her co-drivers covered 55,000 miles and 44 states while Sandy spoke out about cancer at organized events. The tour and its sponsorships have raised $50,000 to date for the American Cancer Society.

She found another way to use her experience with cancer to help others whose lives have been touched by the disease. In January of 1998, she began writing a journal that has appeared as a column in the Lincoln County News and its online publication. She received hundreds of letters from readers in the midcoast area and around the country, telling of the comfort or inspiration they received from reading her words and thanking her for having the courage to share them.
