Gwendolyn McLain
1998-07-16

Gwendolyn S. McLain, 72, of Bremen, died Saturday, July 11 at Maine Medical Center, Portland.

Born November 23, 1925, in Boothbay, she was the daughter of Elbridge and Beatrice Gray Stover. She graduated from Waldoboro High School.

Mrs. McLain devoted her life to her family and enjoyed being at home, cooking and tending her gardens.

She was predeceased by her husband, Dana McLain in 1982.

Survivors include two sons, Robert McLain of Washington and Arnold McLain of Edgecomb; one brother, Arthur Stover of Waldoboro; two sisters, Ruby Eugley of Nobleboro and Dorothy Dodge of Edgecomb; four grandchildren, Kimberley McLain of Boothbay, Gavin McLain of Waldoboro, Travis McLain of Edgewater, Florida and Sarah McLain of Washington; one great-granddaughter, Whitney Lynn McLain of Edgewater, Florida.

A graveside service was held Monday, July 13 at the Evergreen cemetery in Bremen. The Rev. Charles Shotzberger officiated. Arrangements were by Hall Funeral Home, Waldoboro.

Neota M. McLain
1998-09-10

Neota Mary McLain, 74, of Whitefield, a longtime licensed practical nurse, died Sunday, September 6 at Maine General Medical Center, Augusta Campus.

Born in Whitefield on October 20, 1923, she was the daughter of John Franklin and Ruby Mae (Clark) McLain and attended schools in Whitefield.

In 1942, Miss McLain began her nurses training at the old wooden general hospital in Brunswick. She was employed as a licensed practical nurse for 35 years, beginning in 1952 at St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor. In 1987 she retired.

She loved art work, and especially enjoyed sketching and painting.

Surviving are her mother, Ruby (Clark) McLain with whom she resided; her sister, Addie E. Grotton and husband Paul of Somerville; and ten nieces and nephews and their families, including her niece Sharon Lee Curtis of Cherryfield.

Her father died in 1970, her brother Malcolm L. McLain of Nashua, N.H. died in 1980, and her sister Clara Erlena Bouchard of Hallowell died in 1989.

A graveside funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, September 10 at Resthaven Cemetery, Route 32, Windsor. The Rev. Winifred Reynolds will officiate. A committal service and burial will follow. Arrangements by the Gray & Pratt Funeral Home, Windsor.

Allan J. McLennan
1998-12-03

Allan John McLennan, 93, of Wakefield, Mass., died at his home on Wednesday, November 25.

Born in Melbourne, Australia on April 21, 1905, he was the son of the late Peter and Mary (Brade) McLennan.

Since 1930 he was a summer resident of Southport.

Mr. McLennan was a graduate of MIT where he earned both bachelors and masters degrees in electrical engineering, completing the second degree in 1934. Following school he worked for Shell Oil Company in Montreal, Canada for a short period, then he went to work for New England Electric for 34 years until he retired in 1970.He also worked for the engineering firm Charles T. Main Company for another 12 years in Sao Paolo, Brazil, Teheran, Iran and the Canal Zone, Panama. Until he was 88 years old he continued as a consultant to various electrical power generation companies.

He was a Wakefield resident for the past 50 years, a 60-year member of the Golden Rule Lodge, First Parish Congregational Church, Retired Men's Club and several other community and civic organizations.

His wife, Ruth C. (Deadman) McLennan, died in 1982.

Survivors include three children, Anne E. Turk and her husband Richard W. of Meadville, Penn., Margaret S. McLennan of Westfield, Mass., and Robert A. and his wife Anna of No. Billerica, Mass.; and four grandchildren.

Predeceasing him were two brothers and a sister in Australia.

A memorial service will be held at the First Parish Congregational Church, Wakefield on Saturday, December 5 at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends may call at the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Avenue, Wakefield, Mass. on Friday from 7-9 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Allan J. and Ruth G. McLennan Fund at the First Parish Congregational Church, One Church St., Wakefield, MA 01880 or to the Salvation Army, 209 Broadway, Saugus, MA 01906.

Mary A. McNamara
1999-07-15

Mary A. McNamara, 82, of Southbury and Naugatuck, Conn., and also a 50-plus year summer resident of Damariscotta Lake, Nobleboro, died Jan. 10, 1999. She was the widow of George E. McNamara.

She is survived by two sons, John B. McNamara of Southbury, Conn. and Donald G. McNamara of Gorham, and two grandchildren, Kate E. and Christopher G. McNamara.

Barbara M. Meiklem
1999-04-15

Barbara M. Meiklem, 77, of Hartford, Connecticut, died Tuesday, April 6 at Hartford Hospital in Hartford, Conn.

Born on August 27, 1921, she was a daughter of Arthur McKown of Boothbay Harbor, and the late Pearl (Nason) McKown.

Mrs. Meiklem was very involved with her family and enjoyed camping and boating. She made her home in Florida six months during the winter.

She was a supervisor at Blue Cross and Blue Shield in the Norwich office for 15 years.

Survivors include her husband, Richard H. Meiklem, whom she wed May 24, 1947 at Broadview Community Church in Hartford, Conn., 51 years ago; two sons, David H. Meiklem of Norwich, and Roger A. Meiklem; two sisters, Ethel Mae Marr of Florida, and Lyndsay R. Meiklem of Montreal, Canada; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held on Saturday, April 10 at Church & Allen Funeral Home, Norwich, Conn. Burial followed in Maplewood Cemetery.

Melva H. Meisten
1999-04-15

Melva H. Meisten of Boothbay died Friday, April 9 at the Winship Green Nursing Center in Bath. She was 99.

Born in New York City, a daughter of Alexis and Clara Kluge Delsemme, she worked on Wall Street while she was in her twenties. After marrying John N. Meisten, she moved to Lynbrook, New York, where she devoted her time to raising their son, John N. III, as well as donating many volunteer hours to the local Episcopal Church. She also enjoyed reading and loved cooking - something no doubt inherited from her father, a professional chef at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City.

Mrs. Meisten also enjoyed traveling both in the United States and overseas with her husband and looked forward to visiting new places and learning about new cultures. Her later years were devoted to her two beloved granddaughters. She moved to the Washington, D.C./northern Virginia area in 1990, and in 1994 moved to Boothbay.

Surviving are her son, John, and his wife Catherine Ann of Boothbay; her granddaughters, Kimberly Doreen Meisten of Wilmington, Delaware and Deborah Meisten Nagarajan of Minneapolis, Minnesota; a sister, Juliette Dane of Inverness, Florida; and a nephew, Douglas H. Delsemme of Kansas City, Missouri.

A Requiem Mass was held at St. George Episcopal Church in Hepstead, New York on April 14 with internment at Greenfield Cemetery, Hempstead.

Mr. Robert Rowdy' Meister
1998-12-24

MONTICELLO, NY - Robert Rowdy Meister, 46, formerly of Oxford, ME died unexpectedly on Tuesday, December 15, at his home in New York from complications of diabetes.

He was born in Battle Creek, Michigan on October 27, 1952, the son of Audrey and Bud Meister.

He made his home in California for many years and most recently lived in Oxford and then Monticello, NY for the past 18 months, where he had hoped to receive a kidney transplant.

He is survived by his wife Ruby; his mother Audrey Meister of South Paris; a sister Deborah and her husband Joel LaVine of South Paris; three nieces and one nephew, Kate, Abigail, Emily and Christopher LaVine of South Paris; and an uncle Gene Meister of California. He was predeceased by his father Wilton Red Meister in January, 1995. Services will be held privately by the family. Give the gift of life, complete an organ donor card, the family suggests.

Robert Rowdy Meister

MONTICELLO, NY - Robert Rowdy Meister, 46, formerly of Oxford, ME died unexpectedly on Tuesday, December 15, at his home in New York from complications of diabetes.

Robert G. Melnuk
1999-01-28

Robert G. Melnuk, 48, formerly of Wiscasset, died Saturday, January 23 in Florida.

Born in Bath on May 10, 1950, he was the son of Robert B. and Bertha (Daigle) Melnuk.

He graduated from Wiscasset High School and attended Central Maine Technical Institute in Auburn. He owned and operated R.G. Melnuk Electric in Wiscasset for several years before moving to Florida in 1970.

Mr. Melnuk attended St. Philip's Episcopal Church in Wiscasset.

He enjoyed watching stock car racing and football, especially the New England Patriots.

Survivors include his parents, Robert and Bertha Melnuk of Wiscasset; his wife, Charlotte of DeLand, Fla.; his daughter, Rebecca Melnuk of Wiscasset; his son, Jason Melnuk of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; one stepdaughter, Ida Beach of Perry, Fla.; one stepson, Manuel Ratliff of DeLand, Fla.; one sister, Bonnie Woodman of Woolwich; and one grandchild.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, January 31 at Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home, 40 Federal Street, Wiscasset with Rev. Dr. Richard Hall of St. Philip's Episcopal Church officiating. Spring burial will be in Greenlawn cemetery in Wiscasset.

Gordon P. Merriam
1999-02-25

Gordon P. Merriam, 90, Blueberry Farm, South Bristol, died Feb. 16 at Cove's Edge Nursing Home, Damariscotta, after a short illness.

He was born in Lexington, Mass., a son of Edward P. and Grace Goodwin Merriam. He attended Lexington schools and was a graduate of Noble and Greenough School, Boston, and in 1921, of Dartmouth College; he obtained a master's degree from the University of Chicago in 1925.

At Dartmouth, he was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity and Sphinx senior society. He was editor-in-chief of the Dartmouth Jack-O'-Lantern.

In 1916, he received Army infantry training at Plattsburg, N.Y. In World War I, he drove an ambulance on the Western Front with the French Army in the Norton-Jarjes Field Service. He volunteered for officer training at Plattsburg in 1918, and was commissioned at Camp Hancock, Ga., as 2d Lieutenant, Machine Gun Corps., U.S. Infantry.

Mr. Merriam was a volunteer policeman during the Boston police strike in 1918 and, with other volunteers, received an individual commendation and expression of gratitude from the Boston Chamber of Commerce.

He was a teacher at Robert College in Turkey, then entered the U.S. Foreign Service and was posted to Beirut, Damascus, Aleppo, Istanbul, Cairo, and Tehran. While with the Department of State in Washington, he became chief of the Division of Near Eastern Affairs and a member of the Secretary's Policy Planning staff. During his assignment to Egypt, he was an ex officio judge of the U.S. Consular Court in Cairo. He helped draft the text of the Truman Doctrine.

He spoke many languages, and during his later years studied ancient Egyptian history and hieroglyphics, and Spanish.

In retirement, he was a member of the U.S. Executive Reserve.

In 1949, upon medical advice, he retired to Walpole.

He served as assistant treasurer of St. Andrew's Church in Newcastle, and was a founding trustee of the Damariscotta Area Recreational Alliance, now the Central Lincoln County YMCA. He and his wife Roberta gave a tract of land now known as Walpole Woods to the DARA organization for hiking, cross country skiing, and selective forestry; this land was later conveyed to the town of South Bristol. He funded the purchase of land adjacent to the South Bristol Consolidated School for baseball and soccer.

Mr. Merriam recovered his health in Maine and enjoyed sailing, canoeing, trail blazing, mountain climbing, forestry, and vegetable gardening.

He was married in 1926 to Eunice Brandt, and by mutual consent they were divorced in 1934. He was then married to Roberta Hill Briggs until 1977, when she died of heart disease. He then married Mary Bean Smith, who died of lung cancer in 1980.

Mr. Merriam is survived by his wife, the former Helen Brooks Doell; a son, John G. Merriam of Bowling Green, Ohio; a daughter, Eleanor M. Kuniholm of Ithaca, N.Y.; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Two adopted children, Ralph and Geraldine, died in their youth.

In accordance with his wishes, no service will be held and Interment will be private. Arrangements are by Strong Funeral Home, Damariscotta.

Memorial gifts may be made to Miles Memorial Hospital, Damariscotta 04543, or to the charity of one's choice.
