DOUGLAS HOWARD "JOE" APPLEBEE
MILLINOCKET - Douglas Howard Applebee, 63, loving husband of Lillian (Lovejoy) Applebee for more than 31 years, died Dec. 10, 2001, at a Bangor hospital. He was born April 5, 1938, in Brownville, the son of Clouse D. and Barbara (Rolfe) Applebee. He was better known in Brownville as Joe. He was a graduate of 1959 in Brownville. He attended Husson College and was a graduate of the Skowhegan Business College. He worked for Great Northern Paper Co. and later Bowater Inc. in the mills in Millinocket and East Millinocket. He was past master of the Pleasant River Masonic Lodge No. 163 AF & AM. A member of Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rites Lodge Council Chapter, Valley of Bangor and the Valley of Portland Consistory. He was a member of A.A.O.N.M.S. Anah Shrine Temple in Bangor and past secretary of the Past Masters Unit of Anah Temple. He was past secretary and treasurer of the Ebeeme Horseshoe Pond Rd. Association.

He is survived by his loving wife, Lillian of Millinocket; one son, Frank D. of Millinocket; one daughter, Mary B. of Florida; three adopted children, Patricia L. of South Portland, Albert T. of New Hampshire and Tanya M. of Millinocket; three grandchildren, Christopher, Aman-da and Scott; one brother, Ralph Applebee of Brownville; one sister, Shirley Nichols of Chester; three sons-in-law, Aundrey, Kurt and Shawn; several nieces, nephews and many cousins. He was predeceased by one grandson, Kurt Alexander Lyons; one brother, Roger Applebee and one sister, Ruth Leeman.

Services will be held in the spring. Friends are invited to call at the family home in Millinocket. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Brownville Church of Christ, the Millinocket Baptist Church; or the Anah Shrine Temple: ref/Children's Hospital in Springfield, MA, 581 Main St., Bangor 04401. LAWRENCE H. BIGNEY
DOVER-FOXCROFT - Lawrence H. Bigney, 91, husband of Marion (Tilton) Bigney, died peacefully at home, Dec. 12, 2001. He was born Jan. 16, 1910, in Brockton, Mass., the son of Albert and Abbie (Hartford) Bigney.He graduated from Brockton High School, where he played on their first ice hockey team, and from Wentworth Institute of Technology, where he was captain of the rifle team. Early in his life, he founded the Nearby Egg Cooperative in Easton, Mass. He owned and operated Bulldog Camps in Jackman. Later, he worked for M.L. Coffin and Co. and in 1962, he purchased and operated Dover Auto Parks in Dover-Foxcroft for 20 years. He was an active Mason and a member of St. Andrews Lodge No. 83 AF & AM in Bangor, Anah Temple Shrine, Tri-County Shrine and Valley of Portland Masonic Temple. He was a member of the Dover-Foxcroft Congregational Church. He led an active life as a sportsman and was a member of NRA, Sportsman's Alliance of Maine, and the Penobscot Fish and Game Club.

He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Marion of Dover-Foxcroft; a stepson, Norman Higgins and his wife, Helen of Dover-Foxcroft; two grandchildren, Mark Andrew Higgins of Quincy, Mass., Dr. Leigh Ann Higgins and her husband, John Schultzel of Portland; two great-grandchildren, Molly Higgins and MacDonald Lawrence Higgins. He will be remembered by a very special friend, Howard Leland of Dover-Foxcroft. Lawrence was predeceased by a son, Brian.

Friends are invited to call 5-7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 14, 2001, at the Lary Funeral Home, Dover-Foxcroft, where Masonic services will be said at 6:30 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, at the Dover-Foxcroft Congregational Church, with the Rev. Kenneth Dale officiating. Burial will be in the family lot in Rural Grove Cemetery.

WILLIAM M. DOWNING
MILO - Dr. William M. Downing, 94, husband of Janice M. (Mulkern) Downing, died Dec. 12, 2001, at a Dover-Foxcroft hospital. He was born Sept. 2, 1907, in Gloversville, N.Y., the son of William H. and Madge (Stoddard) Downing.He served as a captain with the U.S. Army, and was part of the invasion force landing at Omaha Beach on D-Day. A graduate of the University of Michigan, Dartmouth Medical College, and Boston University School of Medicine, he was a physician and surgeon at Deaconess Hospital in Boston, and then practiced from 1949-1984 at Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro, Mass. He continued practicing medicine until his retirement at age 88. He was a fellow with the American College of Surgeons, a member of the American Medical Association, and the Massachusetts Medical Society.

He is survived by his wife, Janice of Milo; his first wife, Evelyn K. Downing of Taunton, Mass.; four sons, Jeff Downing of Boring, Ore., Greg Downing of Corvallis, Ore., Michael Lindquist of Milo, Mark Lindquist of Mansfield, Mass.; four daughters, Jill Downing of Wellesley, Mass., Lee McBride of Taunton, Mass., Jeanne Murphy of Milo, Julie Leroux of Portlad, Conn.; 16 grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, D. Gorton Downing in 1984.

Funeral services will be held at a later date in Massachusetts. Arrangements are in the care of the Lary Funeral Home, Milo.

CORA (DARLING) PELKEY
OLD TOWN & VEAZIE Cora (Darling) Pelkey, 89, died December 14, 2001 at a Bangor hospital. She was born May 23, 1912 in Patten, the daughter of the late Benjamin and Beatrice (Sibley) Darling. She moved to Old Town in 1923 and graduated from Old Town High School, Class of 1930. She was employed for many years by Penobscot Shoe and Old Town Shoe shops. In 1956, she was employed by the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad in Bangor, retiring in 1984. She was a member of the Order of The Eastern Star. She was predeceased by her only daughter, Patricia (Pelkey) Eaton, in 1998.

She is survived by her son-in-law, Kenneth C. Eaton of Corinna and Florida; 2 grandchildren, DeAnna Eaton of Dexter, and Susan Eaton of San Diego, CA; along with 3 special nieces who made her life easier, and many other nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held 11 A.M. Tuesday, December 18th, at Morses Corner Cemetery, Corinna, with Pastor Stan Griffin of Cornerstone Baptist Church, Exeter, officiating. Following the service, a gathering and time of refreshments will be held at Carl and Loraine Palmer's residence, 1116 Stetson Road, Exeter. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Cora's memory to a charity of one's choice. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal Funeral Chapel, 68 Exeter Road, Corinna, Tel. 278-2262.

ANITA B. CLUKEY
SANGERVILLE- Anita B. Clukey, 80, died December 14, 2001 at a Dover-Foxcroft nursing home surrounded by her family. She was born July 31, 1921 in Dexter, daughter of Frank and Violet (Provost) Cleaves. She attended Dexter Schools and worked at Hardwood Products Co. in Guilford for many years. She was a communicant of Holy Family Catholic Church in Sangerville. She was devoted to her family and enjoyed helping others.

She is survived by her husband, Nazier Clukey Sr. of Sangerville; two sons, Nazier Clukey Jr. of Sangerville, and Leonard and his wife, June Clukey of Guilford; two daughters, Barbara Pickens of Sangerville and Deanna and her husband, John Federowicz of Connecticut; five grandchildren, Brock Clukey of Andover, Maine, Holly Clukey of Mass., Leonard Clukey Jr. of Guilford, Kiev Federowicz of Conn. and Dotty Pickens of Sangerville; a great granddaughter, Kes Federowicz of Conn.; three Brothers, Omer Cleaves of Dexter, Paul Cliche of Madison and Philip and his wife, Phyllis Cleaves of Dexter; two sisters, Lillian DeMarais of Texas and Lucenne Ducette of Lewiston; several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call 6-8 pm Tuesday at the Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 21 Oak St., Guilford. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10am Wednesday at Holy Family Catholic Church in Sangerville with Rev. James Robichaud officiating. Spring burial will be in Mt. Pleasant cemetery in Dexter. Those who wish may make donations to the Alzheimer’s Association, Maine Chapter, 163 Lancaster Street, Portland, Maine 04101.

WILLIS A. GETCHELL, I
NEWPORT - Willis A. Getchell, I, 93, a lifelong resident of Newport, died December 17, 2001 at a Pittsfield healthcare facility. He was born May 31, 1908 at Newport, the son of Arthur and Mary Jane (Higgins) Getchell. He graduated from Newport High School, Class of 1926. He was employed for 32 years by the Maine Water Company as superintendent of the Newport water utility, retiring in 1968. He was an honorary retired chief of the Newport Fire Department, having retired from active duty in 1968. He was also a state fire warden for a number of years. He was a member of Meridian Splendor Lodge #49, AF & AM of Newport, where he served as Master in 1939. He also served as Lodge Secretary for a number of years. He was a former member of the St. John Commandery and Anah Temple Shrine, both of Bangor.

He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Lana-May (Springer) Getchell, who died in 1988 and by their son, Willis A. Getchell, II in 1976. He is survived by a grandson, Willis A. Getchell, III of Phoenix, AZ and a beloved daughter-in-law, Sophie P. Myers of Atlantic City, NJ.

Masonic funeral services will be held at 7 P.M. Friday, December 21st, at Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 117 Main Street, Newport, with the officers of Meridian Splendor Lodge officiating. Friends may call from 6 P.M. until the time of the services. Burial will be in the family lot, Riverside Cemetery, Newport.

GERALD T. "JACK" STROUT
MILO - Gerald T. "Jack" Strout, 70, died Dec. 17, 2001, at a Dover-Foxcroft hospital. He was born May 2, 1931, in Milo, the son of Aubrey F. and Hattie B. (Fitz) Strout. Jack was an avid outdoorsman, and especially enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He is survived by two brothers, Clarence "Nubbin" Strout and his wife, Edith of Milo, Lorin "Tige" Strout and his wife, Lucy of Milo; three sisters, Ruth Hall of Guilford, Catherine Hall of Dover-Foxcroft, Olive Buck and her husband, Lester of Sebec; many nieces and nephews.

Graveside memorial services will be conducted at Evergreen cemetery in the spring. Arrangements are in the care of the Lary Funeral Home, Milo.

MADELYN G. DESCHAMPS
MILO - Madelyn G. "Nana" Deschamps, 86, wife of the late Ernest J. Deschamps, died Dec. 18, 2001, at a Dover-Foxcroft nursing home. She was born Sept. 30, 1915, in Brownville Jct., the daughter of Daniel and Mattie (Philbrook) Washburn.

She is survived by five daughters, Rosemarie Eastman and her husband, Lewis of Springhill, Fla., Katherine Valente of Naples, Fla., Rena Stanchfield and her husband, Glenn of Tamarac, Fla., Polly Ellis and her husband, Lee of Brownville, Nancy Bantle and her husband, Bruce of South Windsor, Conn.; a son-in-law, Henry Valente of Windham; 16 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. She was Nana to all those who knew her. She is also survived by three sisters, Dorothy Snow and her husband, Robert of Topsham, Dawn Priestman of Brownville, Charlotte Gerrish and her husband, Earl of Brownville. She was predeceased by three brothers, Kenneth, Leigh, and Paul.

Friends are invited to call 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 20, 2001, at the Lary Funeral Home, Milo, where memorial services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 21, by special friend, Reuben Lancaster. Burial will be in the family lot in Evergreen Cemetery. Following the services at the funeral home, all are invited to share in a time of fellowship and refreshment at the Down Home Bed and Breakfast, Elm Street, Milo. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to Hibbard Nursing Home Activity Fund, P.O. Box 159, Dover-Foxcroft 04426.

FRANCIS C. CURRIER
CAMBRIDGE, Francis C. Currier, 81, died December 19, 2001 at his home in Cambridge. He was born December 6, 1920 in Parkman, son of Alfred and Alice (Smart) Currier. He served in the US Army during WWII. He worked for many years at the area Woolen Mills and as a woodsman. Later Francis worked as a security guard at the Maplewood poultry plant in Belfast. He was a member of the VFW in Dexter.

He is survived by his wife, Grace Currier of Cambridge; his mother of Dexter; two sons, Michael F. Currier of Morrill and Patrick A. Currier of Cambridge; three daughters Alice Weeks of Cambridge, Lori Dargon of Frankfort and Nick K. Currier of Searsport; a sister, Louella Easler of Parkman; two brothers, Clarence Currier of Dover-Foxcroft and Gregory Currier of Guilford; 13 grandchildren, many great grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held at the Pingree Center cemetery in Parkman at a time to be announced. Arrangements by Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, Guilford.

RALPH L. MOOERS
EXETER - Ralph L. Mooers, 89, died December 20, 2001 at a Dover-Foxcroft hospital after a long illness. He was born July 29, 1912 at Amity, the son of Miles Ludlow and Susan Idella (Esterbrook) Mooers. He worked as a blacksmith for 25 years and also in the woods. He later worked at various farms and woolen mills, retiring from Eastland Woolen Mill in 1976. He was an avid gardener and storyteller.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Arlene (Curtis) Mooers of Exeter; 5 sons, Ralph and his wife, Eloise Mooers, Rodney and his wife, Stacy Mooers all of Exeter, Roger Mooers and his fiancée, Anita Webber of Garland, Willis Mooers of NY, and Harry and his wife, Ruby Mooers of CT; 5 daughters, Brenda and her husband, William (Buster) Sanborn of Corinna, Phyllis and her husband, Jim Lawler of Harmony, Marion and her husband, Stanley White of Dexter, Avis and her husband, Joe LeClair of FL, Diana and her husband, Gene Temple of Detroit; 8 special grandchildren, Peter Mooers of Exeter, Brian and his wife, Michelle Mooers of Dover-Foxcroft, Timothy Mooers and his fiancee, Jami Schwab of Corinna, Rhoda and her husband, William Underhill of Stetson, Rodney and his wife Sabrina Mooers, Jr. of TX, William Sanborn, Jr. of Corinna, Amy and her husband, Kevin Ronco of Dexter and Steven Batchelder of Exeter; and 8 special great grandchildren, Amanda Mooers of Monson, Leah and Emily Mooers of Dover-Foxcroft, Joshua and Tony Underhill of Stetson, Christopher Wiers of Stetson, Ashley Sanborn of Augusta and Devin Ronco of Dexter; one sister, Susan Worster of Corinna; many more grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter, Nancy Gallison and a son, Miles Mooers; 2 brothers and 5 sisters.

Friends may call 6 to 9 P.M. Friday at the Crosby & Neal Funeral Chapel, 68 Exeter Road, Corinna where funeral services will be held 1 P.M. Saturday, December 22nd, with the Rev. Dr. Ted Smith officiating. Spring burial will be in the Corinna Center Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made in his memory to the American Lung Association, 122 State Street, Augusta, ME 04330.

NORMAN J. McNULTY
SANGERVILLE, Norman J. McNulty, 73, died December 20, 2001 at a Dover-Foxcroft hospital. He was born February 4, 1928 in Newark, NJ, son of Joseph and Emma (Steiner) McNulty.

He is survived by his wife, Sandra (Sofsky) McNulty of Sangerville; 4 sons, Jeff McNulty of Arizona, Sean McNulty of Connecticut, Owen McNulty of Arizona, Neal McNulty of Virginia; a daughter, Jennifer Bryant of Portland; several grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Ross McNulty.

Graveside funeral services will be held at the Maine Memorial Veterans cemetery in Belgrade at a later date. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, Guilford.

ELEANOR M. MACE
HERMON AND DEXTER, Eleanor M. Mace, 84, died December 21, 2001 at a Bangor rehabilitation center. She was born February 25, 1917, in Dexter, daughter of Mahile and Edith (Carette) Goulette. She attended Dexter schools and later owned and operated several businesses in the local area. She was Past President of the Newport Chapter of the Business and Professional Women’s Club. She had enjoyed several years of retirement in Florida before moving to Hermon. She was a communicant of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bangor.

She is survived by a brother, Rudolph and his wife, Althea Goulette of Dexter; three sisters, Rita Larson of Dexter, Dorothy and her husband, George Growe of Vero Beach, Florida and Constance and her husband, Ralph Tetu of Lakeland, Florida; five grandchildren, Monique and her husband, Phillip Hashey of Hermon, Angelique and her husband, Brian Luro of Biddeford Pool, Sarah and her husband, Rich Diment of Cape Neddick, Nicole Mace of Newton Highlands, Mass., and Martin Mace Jr. of New York; four great grandchildren, Brooke Luro, Alec Luro, Nicolette Hashey, and Adam Diment; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Albert F. Mace of over 60 years, two sons, Martin and Talbot, two brothers and a sister.

Friends may call 5-7 pm Sunday, December 23, 2001 at the Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 61 Main St., Dexter. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10am Monday at St. Anne's Catholic Church in Dexter with Rev. Raymond Morency officiating. Spring burial will be in the Mt. Pleasant cemetery in Dexter.

CECILIA M. DOYON
DEXTER, Cecilia M. Doyon, 96, beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, died Monday December 24, 2001 at a Dexter health care facility. Cecilia was born March 10, 1905, in Dexter, the daughter of Joseph and Nellie (Boulette) Goulette. She was a life-long communicant of St. Anne's Catholic Church in Dexter and in her early years was a member of the Sodality of St. Anne. Cecilia worked as a weaver in local mills for over fifty years while raising her family. She was a person of great faith and her family's well-being was always her first priority. She will be greatly missed. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her sisters, Albertina Courtney and Geneva Shaughnessy; brothers, Fernald, Hilary and Justin Goulette; a daughter, Loretta Clifford and son-in-law, Frank Clifford of Dexter; and a daughter-in-law, Margaret Doyon.

She is survived by four sons and their wives, Clifford and Carol Doyon of Arlington, Mass., Hilary and Frances Doyon of Dunnellon, Florida, Dana Doyon of Madison, Conn. and Douglas and Dorothy Doyon of Dexter; a daughter and her husband, Beverly and Dale Ward of Bangor; 19 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Friends may call 6-8 pm Friday December 28, 2001 at the Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 61 Main St., Dexter. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10 am Saturday, December 29, 2001 at St Anne's Catholic Church in Dexter with Rev. Raymond Morency officiating. Spring burial will be held 4 pm, Friday May 24, 2002, at Mount Pleasant cemetery in Dexter with Rev. Raymond Morency officiating. Arrangements by Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, Dexter.

MARY JANE BAKER SINCLAIR
HARTFORD'S POINT - Mary Jane Baker Sinclair, 80, died at Sedgewood Commons in Falmouth on Dec. 24, 2001, after a lengthy illness. For the past several years she and her husband were winter residents of the Portland area, and lived at Hartford's Point on Moosehead Lake in the summer. She was born in St. Francis, on Dec. 7, 1921, the daughter of Albert and Marie Baker.She attended Ft. Kent High School and was a graduate of Ft. Kent Normal School. She turned 20 the day Pearl Harbor was bombed. In 1944, she married John Sinclair, also of St. Francis, in Norfolk, Va. After the war, she and her husband lived on the Canadian boundary, in St. Pamphile, for several years before moving to Bangor in 1956. She was a communicant of St. Mary's Church. She also lived for several years in Newport, and Cocoa Beach, Fla. She was a wonderful cook and entertained many friends wherever she lived.

Mary is survived by her husband of 57 Years, John Sinclair of Greenville and Falmouth; her brother, John of Rockville, Conn.; her son, J. David Sinclair of Greenville; her daughter, Susan Sinclair Nevins of Falmouth; two grandsons, Stuart and Aaron Sinclair; two granddaughters, Grace and Molly Nevins; a great-grandson, Owen Sinclair; and many nieces and nephews. Her brothers Norman, Gordon, Albert, Jesse, and Charles predeceased her.

Her family is planning a memorial service and celebration of her life on Memorial Day weekend at Hartford's Point.
