MILLINOCKET/LINCOLN
E. PATRICIA SALEM

E. Patricia (Murphy) Salem, 89, passed away peacefully May 25, 2003, at a Lincoln nursing home.

She was born in Fort Kent, April 10, 1914, the daughter of James and Mary (Robichaud) Murphy.

As a young woman, Pat worked at the Eagle Lake Hospital in Eagle Lake. She left Fort Kent during the depression to work at the People’s Laundry in Biddeford, later returning home to Fort Kent, where she worked for Jake Etscovitz for many years.

She came to Millinocket in 1935, where she met her husband. After a courtship of two weeks, they were married at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church by Father Hogan. Pat and her husband owned and operated Salem’s Grocery Store in Millinocket for 42 years, retiring in 1977.

She was a communicant of St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church and a Past Regent of the Little Flower Circle Daughters of Isabella No. 392. Pat also worked in local town affairs, such as the cemetery commission, and often assisted those in need, including the March of Dimes and Multiple Sclerosis Society. Pat did welfare work with the late Bernice Buck, delivering food baskets and clothes. She also worked for her church as the chairman of suppers and speak-easy minstrel and bazaars. Pat was a contributor to katahdin Senior Retirees, Meals for Me, and to her church toward the new organ in Gertrude Levasseur’s memory. Pat also helped Dr. Young deliver babies.

She was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Fred Salem, in 1999; and also predeceased by her brother, Leonard Joseph Murphy, as well as her two sisters, Albertine McIntyre and Bernadine Chasse.

She is survived by two daughters, Sandra M. Haven of Millinocket and Freda May Rouleau and her husband, Peter Rouleau, of Medway; one son, John W. Salem of Clearwater, Florida; two granddaughters, Kimberly Marie Haven and her husband, Barry Hodgkin of Scarborough, and Patti Jo McLaughlin, and her husband, Blaine, of Medway; four grandsons, William Haven and friend, Christina, Todd and wife Christine Haven of Binghamton, New York, Scott and wife, Kelly Haven, of Wallkill, New York and Peter Rouleau and wife, April, of Millinocket; fourteen great-grandchildren, Casey Jo McLaughlin, Breonna Haven, Shane Rouleau, Mac McLaughlin, Paige Rouleau, Austin Scott Haven, Makayla Marie Haven, Nikole and Kasey Jo McLaughlin, Taylor and Sam Hodgkin, Heather M. Josette F., and Brooke A.; two sisters, Theresa Cyr of Pilesgrove, New Jersey, Nathalie and her husband, Richard McGibbon, of Millinocket; two brothers, Medley and wife, Germaine Murphy, and Leo James and wife Leola Murphy, all of Augusta; also many nieces and nephews, and many special friends.

Friends may call at R.L. Bouchard Funeral Home, 11 Tamarack Street, Millinocket from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. May 27, 2003. Little Flower Circle Daughters of Isabella will recite the rosary at 3 p.m. at the funeral home. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 p.m. at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church. Burial will be in Millinocket Cemetery. If friends wish, gifts in her memory may be made to Katahdin Area Support Group, 10 Field Street, Millinocket, ME 04462.

MEDWAY
WADE ARTHUR BOYNTON

Wade Arthur Boynton, 67, died May 24 2003, in Millinocket. He was born on August 2, 1935 in East Millinocket, the son of Keith W. and Ruth (Corbett) Boynton.

Wade graduated from Schenck High School in 1954. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving four years as a gunners mate. He was a life member of the USS Forestal Reunion Organization.

He retired from Great Northern Paper Company in 1994 and was a life member of the United Paper Makers Local No. 152. He was also a member of the Calvary Temple Assembly of God in East Millinocket.

He was loyal and trustworthy by nature. He loved hunting and fishing, and was an avid movie fan. After retirement, he and wis wife, Joan, toured the United States on a motorcycle from the East coast to the West coast. He grew to love travel, spending winters in Florida and returning home to his family in the spring.

He loved his family dearly, and is survived by his wife of 45 years, Joan (Nicholson) Boynton; two daughters, Kim Pasanen and her husband, Peter, Ruth Darling and her husband, Kenneth; four grandchildren, Taimi and Nicholas Pasanen, Adam and Daniel Deveau; two brothers, Keith Boynton, Jr. and wife, Joan, Ronald and his wife, Irene Boynton, all of East Millinocket; one sister, Bonnie Douglas of Millinocket; and many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. at Calvary Temple Assembly of God in East Millinocket, where funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday with the Rev. Regginal Adams officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Calvary Temple Assembly of God, 2 Orchid Street, East Millinocket, ME 04430. Arrangements by Bowers Funeral Home in Island Falls.

MILLINOCKET
WILFRED E. WRIGHT

Wilfred E. Wright, 82, passed away Tuesday, May 27, 2003. He was born, the son of William and Lydia (Pine) Wright, on October 31, 1920, in Vanceboro.

Willie graduated from Danforth High School, class of 1940, and shortly thereafter joined the U.S. Army, where he served four years during World War II.

Willie was employed by Great Northern Paper Company in the purchasing department, retiring in 1984.

He was a member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church. He enjoyed gardening and was an avid golfer.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Janet H. (Johnson) Wright of Millinocket, and his children: his son, Earl and wife, Michelle Wright of Millinocket, his daughter, Jana L. Wright of Windham; two brothers, Francis of Tampa, Florida, and Robert of East Machias, Maine. He was predeceased by his parents; five brothers, Elmo, Perley, Richard, Harold, and Philip; three sisters, Annie, Freida, and Phylis.

There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 3, 2003, at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Millinocket, with the Rev. Dr. Lance Almeida officiating. Burial will be in Millinocket Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, gifts in Willie’s memory may be made to St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church Memorial Fund, Highland Avenue, Millinocket, ME 04462. Arrangements by R.L. Bouchard Funderal Home, Millinocket.

EAST MILLINOCKET
REGINALD GLIDDEN

Reginald Glidden, 76, died unexpectedly in East Millinocket on May 21, 2003. He was born, the son of Roland and Eula (Cram) Glidden, on November 16, 1926, in East Millinocket.

Reginald served with the U.S. Army in the Korean War, and worked for the Town of East Millinocket street department for 36 years.

Reggie was an avid hunter and fisherman, spending his summers in the North Woods area. He also enjoyed going to the horse races in Bangor with friends.

He is survived by a special cousin, Kenny, as well as other cousins. He will be missed by his fishing and hunting buddies, Billy, Mark, Gary, and David; as well as by his neighbors, Betty and Tash.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 2, 2003, at the East Millinocket Cemetery, with the Rev. Clark A. Osborn officiating. In lieu of flowers, gifts in Reggie’s memory may be made to the Katahdin Area Support Group, 10 Field Street, Millinocket, ME 04462.

EAST MILLINOCKET
IRENE T. INGERSON

Irene T. Ingerson, 90, passed away peacefully on June 3, 2003. She was born in Princeton on November 2, 1912, the daughter of Isaac and Elmira (Chadbourne) Tupper.

Mrs. Ingerson was the wife of the late Irving B. Ingerson. She was valedictorian of her class at Princeton High School, and graduated from Eastern State Normal School in Castine.

Mrs. Ingerson began her professional career teaching in a one-room schoolhouse in Mariaville, and later taught in Gardiner, teaching a total of 26 years.

She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Ruth and Larry Jones of East Hampton, Connecticut; one son and daughter-in-law, Bradford and Cynthia Ingerson of Millinocket; one sister, Virginia Clark of Bangor; four grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by a granddaughter, Rachel Jones.

Graveside services will be held at Woodlawn Memorial Park at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Brewer at 1 p.m. June 14, 2003, with the Rev. Norman Rust officiating. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to Manna Ministries, 180 Center Street, Bangor, ME 04401. Arrangements are by R.L. Bouchard Funeral Home in Millinocket.

MILLINOCKET
RAYMOND PHILIP ARSENAULT

Raymond Philip Arsenault, 62, died June 5, 2003. He was born in Millinocket on June 7, 1940, the son of the late Addis and Rita (Deschaine) Arsenault.

Raymond graduated from Stearns High School in 1960, and went on the join the U.S. Air Force, where he served two tours in Vietnam. He returned home to join the Millinocket National Guard, completing 17 years of service.

Raymond then moved to Lewiston, where he lived for 30 years and was an avid volunteer for the Eastern Agency on Aging. Special thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Perry for all of their help and support while he was residing in Lewiston.

Raymond is survived by two daughters, Debbie L. Arsenault-York and her husband, Chris, and their three children, Derek, Christopher, and Josh, of Orrington; April A. James, her husband, Peter, and their three children, PJ, Amanda, and Rachel, of Cicero, New York; two sisters, Patsy Perry and Charlene Caron; and a brother, Robert Arsenault, all of Millinocket; and brother, Paul and his special friend, Joanna, of Bangor. Raymond was predeceased by his parents, an infant daughter, Rebecca; and two sisters, Linda Richardson and Elizabeth Arsenault.

In lieu of a funeral, Raymond wished to have a simple graveside memorial, which will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 10, at the Millinocket Cemetery.

Friends and family may contribute to the Katahdin Area Support Group in his memory, if they wish.

EAST MILLINOCKET
LINDA ALMA (FLEMING) TIBBITTS

Linda Alma (Fleming) Tibbitts, 62, died June 12, 2003, at a Lincoln hospital, surrounded by her family. She was born in Lincoln on October 4, 1940, the daughter of the late Lindley and Hilma (York) Fleming.

Following her graduation from Lee Academy, Linda attended Husson College.

She was a member of the First Congregational Church in East Millinocket and an active member of the Women’s Fellowship.

She enjoyed knitting, rug hooking, reading, and going for drives. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.

Linda is survived by her husband, Donald C. Tibbitts of East Millinocket; four children, Terri Priest and her husband, Jeffrey, of Lincoln, Donald M. Tibbitts, Catherine Hunter, both of East Millinocket, and Liza Tibbitts of Lisbon; four grandchildren, Crystal, Borello, Michaela Hunter, Megan and Jason Priest; one brother, Dale Fleming of East Millinocket; a special aunt, Alma Butterfield of Clearwater, Florida; several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters-in-laws, and friends. She was predeceased by her parents, and one brother, Kilby Fleming.

Friends are invited to visit with the family at R.L. Bouchard Funeral Home, 17 Western Avenue, East Millinocket, from 2-4 p.m. and from 6-8 p.m. Monday, June 16, 2003. Funeral services will be held at the First Congregational Church of East Millinocket at 2 p.m., Tuesday, June 17, 2003, with the Rev. Mark Pilletere officiating. Interment will follow at the East Millinocket Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make a donation to the First Congregational Church, PO Box 306, East Millinocket, ME 04430; or to the Katahdin Area Support Group, 10 Field St., Millinocket, ME 04462.

EUGENE A. RIDEOUT

Eugene A. Rideout, 73, died Saturday, June 14, 2003. He was born April 4, 1930, in Millinocket, the third child of Wendall C. and Theresa M. (Rogerson) Rideout.

Gene attended North Yarmouth Academy, and later served in the U.S. Army, where he was honorably discharged in 1950.

Gene was a conductor for the Bangor & Aroostook Railroad for 25 years, and was a well-known businessman in Millinocket. His business endeavors included Rideout’s Car Wash, Rideout’s Hideout, and a partnership in Katahdin Roofing Company. He and his wife, Ginny, were owners of Rideout’s Market for 25 years.

He was a Charter Member and past President of BARCO Federal Credit Union. He was twice Exulted Ruler and former Life Member of B.P.O. Elks Lodge No. 1521, and District Deputy of Elks Maine North from 1992-1993. He was a member of the North American Camping Association Chapter No. 37, and a member of the First Congregational Church of Millinocket.

Gene was an avid sports fan, and he loved to play cribbage with his friends at Penobscot Valley Acres.

Gene is survived by his wife of 53 years, Ginny F. (Brown) Rideout of Millinocket; four sons and their wives, Gary and wife, Gail Rideout, Thomas and wife, Sharon Rideout, Richard Rideout and wife Laurie Osgood, all of Millinocket, and Daniel and wife, Maryann Rideout, of Medway; nine grandchildren, Jessica, Jason, Aaron, Jeremy, Dwight, Melissa, Sarah, Andrew, and Timmy; his brothers and sisters, Marilyn Smid of Florida, Wendell Rideout Jr. and wife, Janice, of Mattawamkeag, Robert Rideout and wife, Gail, of Rochester, New York, Carol and husband, Mike Beagan, of Old Town, Charles Rideout of Gouldsboro, Sandra Rideout of Wantagh, New York, Judy and husband, Ray Barfield, of Green River, Wyoming; a special sister-in-law, Ginny’s sister, Alice Rideout of Portland; and many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at R.L. Bouchard Funeral Home, 11 Tamarack St., Millinocket, from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, June 17. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Norman Rust, interim pastor of the First Congregational Church of Millinocket, officiating. Burial will follow at Millinocket Cemetery. LILA B. SHOREY

Lila B. Shorey, 72, died in Bangor on Saturday, June 14, 2003. She was born October 21, 1930, in Dolby, the daughter of Edmund and Vera (Barrows) Burleigh.

She was the wife of the late Philip C. Shorey, Sr. who died in 1996. Lila was a devoted mother and homemaker, and she enjoyed volunteering some years ago for Katahdin Friends in East Millinocket.

Lila is survived by five children; a daughter, Pamela and husband, Clifford Ridley, of Kenduskeag; and four sons, Richard Shorey and his companion, Barbara, Philip C. Shorey Jr. and wife, Lisa, Robert Shorey, and William Shorey and wife, Tammy, all of Millinocket; four sisters, Dorothy Day, Sylvia Osbourne, Lucy Dempsey, and Bernice Nickerson; 13 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two sisters and four brothers.

Gerald Angel
2001-05-15

Gerald D. Angel of Newport, Me., co-founder of the weekly newspaper The Rolling Thunder Express of Newport, died Jan. 4 after a long battle with cancer. He was 52.

Angel and his wife, Sylvia, founded the Rolling Thunder Express in 1985.

Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Jason and Luke, three sisters and a granddaughter.
G. Edward Maroon Jr.
2001-05-15

G. Edward Maroon of Lewiston, Me., died Jan. 20 at St. Mary's Regional Medical Center in Lewiston soon after surgery. He was 77.

Maroon was a longtime sports columnist for the Sun Journal in Lewiston. He began making high school picks for the paper under the pen name "Mr. Downtown" in the early 1970s. His weekly column was one of the paper's most popular features until 1990. He was also suburban circulation manager for the Sun-Journal for 46 years, retiring in 1988. He continued writing his sports column at his leisure.

Maroon leaves his wife, Hildred; a daughter, Catherine; two sons, G. Edward and Michael.
