Roger S. Cunningham

BAR HARBOR - Roger S. Cunningham, 87, passed away July 8, 2000, at a Bar Harbor health-care facility after a short illness. He was born March 11, 1913, in Bar Harbor, the son of William H. and Eunice (McKay) Cunningham.

Roger was a lifelong well-known resident and businessperson of Bar Harbor. He was a former hotel and restaurant owner of "Cunningham’s Hotel" during the 1940s through 1950s. He was a lifetime member of the 40 Hayseeders, becoming vice president in 1959 and president from 1979 until present. Roger was also a member of St. Saviour’s Episcopal Church of Bar Harbor, the MDI Lions Club for more than 55 years, a member of the Bar Harbor Masonic Lodge No. 185, the York Rite Bodies, the Anah Temple Shrine and Hancock County Shrine Club.

Roger is survived by three sons, Lawrence Cunningham of Atlanta, Ga., David Cunningham of Absecon, N.J., and Philip Cunningham of Bar Harbor; one sister, Beulah Smith of Florida and Winter Harbor; four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Roger was predeceased by his first wife, Ella, and sister, Amy C. Bateman.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, July 13, 2000, at Jordan-Fernald, Bar Harbor Chapel, 48 Eden St., Bar Harbor, with Father Edwin Garrett officiating. Interment will be at Hillside Cemetery, Hulls Cove. If friends desire, contributions in Roger’s memory may be made to the MDI Lions Scholarship Fund, c/o Richard Church, Southwest Harbor 04679.

Adell E. Haley

OSBORN - Adell E. Haley, 91, died July 9, 2000, at her home in Osborn. She was born in Bar Harbor, the daughter of Frank and Evelyn (Barbour) Stevens.

She attended schools in Maine. She had lived in New York and Boston. She worked as the tax collector in Osborn for a few years and was a member of the 4 Town Senior Citizens Club, as well as being the oldest citizen in Osborn.

She is survived by two daughters, Barbara H. Rankin of Osborn and Jacqueline Leavitt and her husband, Gerry, of Ellsworth; one son, Richard Jordan Sr. and his wife, Frances, of Osborn; seven grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, several nieces and one great-nephew. She will also be missed by a special friend, "My Boy, Charlie," Charles Watters of Bradley. She was predeceased by a son, Frank C. Haley, and a daughter, Bonnie Foster.

A funeral service was held July 12, 2000, at Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, Ellsworth, with the Rev. Rolf Hellum officiating. Interment was at the Aurora-Osborn Cemetery, Aurora.

Raymond E. Grindle

OKEECHOBEE, FLA. and ELLSWORTH - A committal service for Raymond E. Grindle, who died Feb. 14, 2000, will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, July 8, 2000, at Hillside Cemetery, Waltham.

Friends will gather after the service at the home of Candyce and Allen Wilbur in Eastbrook.

Agnes F. Deegan

SURRY - Agnes F. Deegan, 77, died July 9, 2000, at an Ellsworth hospital. She was born April 7, 1923, in Chicago, Ill., the daughter of John A. and Laura (Richardson) Brenneman.

She served her country in the U.S. Navy during World War II as an aviation machinist second class stationed in Hawaii. After retiring in Miami, Fla., in 1986, after a career in real estate and as a flight attendant, she and her husband became residents of Lower Patten Pond. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and was a Eucharistic minister.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 48 years, Vincent T. Deegan; eight children and 15 grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Thursday, July 13, 2000, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Ellsworth, with the Rev. Leo James Michaud officiating. Arrangements by Jordan Funeral Home, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth.

Florence (Sawyer) Emery

LAMOINE - There will be a memorial service for Florence (Sawyer) Emery at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 22, 2000, at the Baptist Church in Lamoine. Florence died on Oct. 14, 1999, in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Ralph Cushing Hayward Jr.

CAPE ELIZABETH and BANGOR - Ralph Cushing Hayward Jr., 80, a retired vice president at Nissen’s Baking Co., died on July 3, 2000, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Bangor. He was born in Portland, May 18, 1920, the son of Ralph C. Hayward Sr. and Mabel (Waldron) Hayward.

Cush, a former resident of Cape Elizabeth, enjoyed volunteering at the Maine Medical Center in Portland after retirement. He was a member of the State Street Congregational Church in Portland and a past member and commodore of the Centerboard Yacht Club in South Portland. He loved sailing in Casco Bay with his family and cruised for many summers with his wife, Shirley, off the coast of Maine. He was an avid runner who started competing late in life in various road races around Portland. He attended Deering High School, graduated from Kimball Union Academy in 1939 and from Bowdoin College in 1943. During World War II he served in the U.S.A.F. in the China Offensive of the Asiatic Pacific Theater. Upon returning from the Pacific he began work at Nissen’s Baking Co. He spent his entire career there, both in Worcester, Mass., and Portland, rising to plant manager and retiring as a vice president in 1982.

He is survived by his children, Kristin R. Hayward of East Holden, Wendy H. Shaw of Bethesda, Md., Thomas D. Hayward of Holden, and David C. Hayward of Hancock; a niece, Nancy Senger of South Portland; and four grandchildren, Andrew Shaw and Kathryn Shaw of Bethesda, Md., and Seth Hayward and Sarah Hayward of Holden. He was predeceased by the love of his life, Shirley J. Hayward, in 1986. He was also predeceased by his brother, Dana Hayward, and his sister, Ruth Hayward.

A private celebration of his life will be held by his family. Friends may make donations in Cush’s memory to the Thomas Memorial Library, Cape Elizabeth, ME 04107. A service of Brookings-Smith, Bangor.

Janet Giles Carlisle

SURRY - Janet Giles Carlisle, 79, died July 5, 2000, at an Ellsworth health-care facility, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born July 1, 1921, in Waltham, the daughter of Everett and Laura (Haslam) Giles.

She owned and operated Auto Lunch in Surry for many years and was town clerk for the town of Surry from 1947-1982. Janet served as head of the hot lunch program in the Surry schools from 1953-1974 and cooked at the Blue Hill Memorial Hospital for 12 years. She was a 50-plus year member of Arbutus Grange No. 450.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 58 years, Robert T. Carlisle Jr. of Surry; one son, Robert T. Carlisle III and his wife, Lynne, of Brewer; two grandchildren, Michael of Boston and Michelle of Eddington; five cousins and two nieces. She was predeceased by a brother, Roland Giles.

A funeral service was held July 8, 2000, at Jordan Funeral Home, Ellsworth, with the Rev. Constance Wells officiating. Interment was in North Bend Cemetery, Surry. Friends who wish may make donations in Janet’s memory to the American Cancer Society, Maine Division Inc., 52 Federal St., Brunswick 04011.

Kenneth A. Shepherd

HANCOCK - Kenneth A. Shepherd, born in Norwell, Mass., 25 May, 1915, died at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital, Ellsworth, 12 July, 2000, age 85 years, son of Lloyd S. and Ruth (Robertson) Shepherd.

Kenneth moved to Edgartown, Mass., with his family when a boy and graduated from Edgartown School. His senior class was composed of eight female members and Ken, as their president.

His first marriage was to Helen Augusta of Falmouth, Mass., and they had one son, Jared Nelson (Shepherd) Grant who resides in Edgartown. Ken was in his 50th year of marriage with his beloved wife, E. Frances (Cahoon) Shepherd. Their children are Kenneth Lloyd Shepherd of Edgartown, Cynthia Rebecca (Shepherd) Limberakis of Woods Hole, and Daniel Francis Shepherd of Waquoit, Mass. In addition to his wife, he leaves eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and a brother, Wilbur S. Shepherd of Tuckerton, N.J. He was predeceased by his brother, Vernon M. Shepherd, and his sister, Lois M. Shepherd.

Ken was drawn to the sea at an early age, shipping out on numerous fishing boats. One of the first was the famous schooner Hazel M. Jackson. In 1939 he purchased his own vessel, Betzy C., which he had for 11 years. He then worked ashore at Sam Cahoon’s Harborside Fish Market and later Edwards Boatyard. In the early ’60s for the next 13 years, he skippered Perry E. Hall’s yacht Tomahawk. They were pioneers for making the swordfish a gamefish. Their largest, 552 lbs., they ironed and fought for an hour and a half, 100 miles offshore near the Nantucket Lightship. They also would go out to the backside of Nantucket daily for bluefish and striped bass. He ended his career as a rigger for Falmouth Marine Railways.

Ken was a member of Marine Lodge AF and AM of Falmouth, Mass., for 63 years, York Rite Bodies and member of Aleppo Temple Shrine of Boston.

Services will be held on Cape Cod in September. If friends wish, they may make donations in Kenneth’s memory to the Shriner’s Hospital in Boston, in care of Anah Temple Shrine, P.O. Box 735, Bangor 04402-0735 or to Community Health and Counseling Services of Hancock County, 415 Water St., Ellsworth, ME 04605. Arrangements by Jordan Funeral Home, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth.

Marion L. Overlock

BANGOR and ELLSWORTH - Committal services for Marion L. Overlock, who died Oct. 8, 1999, will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 12, 2000, at Locust Grove Cemetery, Hampden, with the Rev. Mark Bruce officiating. A service of Brookings-Smith, Bangor.

Miriam L. Klausky

SOUTHWEST HARBOR - Miriam L. Klausky, 88, died at an MDI health-care facility, July 12, 2000. She was born in Sorrento, March 3, 1912, daughter of Granville S. and Ida (Stover) Higgins.

Miriam was a bookkeeper for her husband’s lobster business for many years. She loved to play the piano and organ as well as being an avid golfer. She also supported many local organizations. Miriam was a member of the MDI Lioness Club, the Manset Gleaners, Cranberry Island Ladies Aid and was a member of the Manset Congregational Church.

Miriam is survived by her husband of 67 years, Joseph L. Klausky of Southwest Harbor; three sons, Wallace Klausky of Venice Fla., Joseph Klausky Jr. of Daytona Beach, Fla., and Allan Klausky of Southwest Harbor; seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Also a special friend, Nancy Bulger. She was predeceased by a son, Michael, in 1999.

A funeral service was held July 15, 2000, at the Fernald Funeral Chapel, Mount Desert. Interment was at Mt. Height Cemetery, Southwest Harbor. The family suggests that if friends desire, they may make contributions to SPCA, Box 434, c/o Beth Gray, Southwest Harbor 04679 in Miriam’s memory.

Ronald E. Schwartz

SULLIVAN - Ronald E. Schwartz, 65, died Thursday, June 29, 2000, at an Ellsworth hospital. He was born in Cape Elizabeth, Dec. 4, 1934, the son of Clarence H. and Doris E. (Mullin) Schwartz.

Ronald was a chief engineer in the merchant Marines for many years before retiring in 1986 to Sullivan. He was a member of Hiram Lodge No. 70, AF & AM in Portland, and Ellsworth Lodge No. 2743 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks.

Ronald is survived by his wife of 15 years, Rose E. (Power) Schwartz of Sullivan; five children, 1st Lt. James Schwartz, U.S. Army, of Salem, Mass., Jessica Schwartz of Sullivan, Lee Ann Costello, Cindy Strumph and Mark Schwartz, all of Portland; five granddaughters; a sister, Louise Lyman and her husband, Frank, of Portland; and many extended family members and friends.

A Masonic funeral service was conducted by the officers of David Hooper Lodge No. 207, AF & AM on July 3, 2000, at the Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, 215 Main St., Ellsworth.

Elmer C. Davis Jr

LAMOINE - Elmer C. Davis Jr., 88, died July 17, 2000, at an Ellsworth hospital. He was born April 10, 1912, in Northeast Harbor, the son of Jennie (Eaton) and Elmer C. Davis Sr.

He was the former owner of Associated Builders, Inc., selling to Eugene F. King in 1973. He was a former president of the Ellsworth Lions Club, a 56-year member of Lygonia Lodge No. 40 AF & AM of Ellsworth, Anah Temple Shrine of Bangor and the Shrine Club. He served on the board of Meadowview Retirement Homes for 27 years.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, June (Bragdon) Davis; one sister, Edith Davis Higgins; four nephews, David, Kendall, Carroll and Sherwood Higgins; two nieces, Elizabeth Reaves Herring and Charlotte Reaves Chillura; also his wife’s two nephews, Merle and Jasper Bragdon; and niece, Jill Bragdon Murphy and their families; goddaughter, Ann Lord Gleason; godson, Jake Markos; and by many kind and loving friends. He was predeceased by a sister, Dora Davis Reaves.

At his request, there will be no visiting hours. A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the families. Friends who wish may make donations in Elmer’s memory to the Maine Coast Memorial Hospital, 50 Union St., Ellsworth 04605. Arrangements by Jordan Funeral Home, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth.

Lila (Rich) LeClair

OLD TOWN - Lila (Rich) LeClair, 90, wife of the late Ernest J. LeClair, died peacefully June 27, 2000, at a local nursing center. She was born Nov. 30, 1909, in Tremont, the daughter of Roy U. and Jennie L. (Sargent) Rich.

Surviving are her children, Gerald Gordon and his wife, Betty, of Sullivan, Kendall Gordon and his wife, Patricia, of Brewer, Janice Hosking and her husband, Hank of Sullivan; nine grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her first husband, Oscar Gordon of Sullivan, in 1977.

Private family services will be held at the Maine Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery, Augusta. A service of Brookings-Smith, Clark-Piper Chapel, Brewer.

Robert L. DeWitt

ELLSWORTH - Robert L. DeWitt passed away quietly July 23, 2000, at Bangor, at the age of 79. He was born Sept. 22, 1920, at Ellsworth, the son of Alice (Lake) DeWitt and Elmer L. DeWitt.

Bob graduated from Ellsworth High School in the Class of 1939, and served for a time in the U.S. Navy. He worked several years at Bath Iron Works before moving back to Ellsworth, where he went to work for the Fred W. Beal Co. Later, he began work with the State of Maine for the Maine Department of Transportation, where he worked for 28 years, until his retirement.

He is survived by his only brother, Edward L. DeWitt; Ed’s wife, Patricia (Linscott) DeWitt; two daughters, Gloria J. DeWitt Austin of Ellsworth and her two sons, Mark of Ellsworth and Jonathan and his wife, Bedina (Lewis) Austin, of Mariaville, and Mary E. DeWitt Farnsworth and her husband, Darrell, of Cherryfield and their children, Daniel and Christopher, and Billie Jo Stanwood and her husband, Shayne, all of Cherryfield; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Graveside committal services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, July 27, 2000, at Woodbine Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make a contribution to the American Heart Association, Maine Affiliate, P.O. Box 346, Augusta, ME 04332-0346. Arrangements are by Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, Ellsworth.

Anna Flagg Johnston Wellington

SOUTHWEST HARBOR - Anna Flagg Johnston Wellington died Feb. 29, 2000. Services of remembrance will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, July 29, 2000, at the Southwest Harbor Congregational Church, with the Rev. Richard Carter officiating.

The family suggests that if friends desire, they may give to the Dorothy Johnston Fund at the Southwest Harbor Public Library, P.O. Box 156, Southwest Harbor 04679 or to the SPCA Shelter in Southwest Harbor, P.O. Box 434, where she served on the board for many years. Arrangements by Fernald Funeral Chapel, Mount Desert.

David Andrew Parker

HUDSON, N.H. - David Andrew Parker, 43, of 5 Gordon St., Hudson, N.H., died Thursday morning, July 20, 2000, at Southern New Hampshire Medial Center in Nashua, from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident in Hudson on July 10.

Mr. Parker was born in Rockland on July 13, 1957, son of Donald E. and Ruth E. (Herrick) Parker of Ellsworth. A resident of Livermore Falls and Chesterville for many years, he made his home in Hudson for the past 14 years.

He had been employed as an administrator at Southern New Hampshire Medical Center in Nashua for the past five years. More recently, Mr. Parker had been self-employed in the computer industry, designing Web sites for shopping malls.

Educated in Maine schools, he was a graduate of Livermore Falls High School in 1975.

An avid outdoorsman, Mr. Parker enjoyed camping and fishing. He also enjoyed computers.

Mr. Parker was predeceased by his twin daughters, Jessica and Angela Parker, who died in 1978. Besides his parents, survivors include two daughters, Amie M. Parker and Jessi Parker, both of Charlottesville, Va.; two sons, James Parker of Livermore Falls and Timothy I. Parker of Hudson; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Linda Doiron of East Wilton and Rebecca and Paul Hoffman of Burnham; his soul mate, Kelly Edwards of Hudson; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

His funeral service was held in Alvirne Chapel, 160 Derry Road, Route 102, Hudson, on July 24. Contributions may be made to the David A. Parker Memorial Scholarship, c/o Atty. Andrew C. Bauer, Gottesman & Hollis Professional Association, 39 East Pearl St., Nashua, NH 03060.

Malcolm L. MacGregor

ZEPHYRHILLS, FLA. - Malcolm L. MacGregor, 87, died at his home in Zephyrhills on Saturday, June 17, 2000.

A native of West Gouldsboro, he moved to Zephyrhills in 1981. He was a machinist for Stinson Canning Co., a Methodist, and a member of the Masonic Lodge of Winter Harbor.

He is survived by a son, Ronald, West Gouldsboro; a daughter, Marilyn Reiff, Zephyrhills; a brother, Cameron, South Gouldsboro; a sister, Amy Hallowell, Columbia, Md.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held June 26, 2000, at Kelly Memorial Funeral Home in Zephyrhills.
