AUGUSTA

Jeanette H. Walker Fitton – age 69 of Middle Rd., died unexpectedly Thursday, August 16, 2001. She was born on January 16, 1932 in Troy the daughter of Leon A. and Mildred M. (Bragdon) Higgins.

Mrs. Fitton was a graduate of Maine Central Institute in Pittsfield and was a member of the Sidney Baptist Church.

She had been employed by the James Bean Elementary School in Sidney for several years and had preciously worked at Central Maine Power for 25 years.

Mrs. Fitton was a member of the Literacy Volunteers of America.

She was pre-deceased by her first husband, Allie A. Walker and two brothers, Roland and Alton Higgins.

Mrs. Fitton is survived by her husband, Kenneth A. Fitton of Sidney and Coward, SC; a son, Frank E. Walker and his wife Jennifer of Belgrade; a daughter, Mary H. Wierzbicki and her husband John of Lisbon; a brother, Robert Higgins and his wife Frances of Merrimack, NH; two sisters, Marie Graves and her husband Donald and Maxine Ayers all of Sidney; a step-daughter, Linda Woods and her husband Harry Vayo of Oakland; four grandchildren, Nathan Walker, Rebecca and Jeffrey Wierzbicki and Andy Vayo; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Relatives and friends may visit from 2-4 PM on Sunday, August 19th at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. A graveside service will be held on Monday morning at 11 at Reynolds Hill Cemetery, Sidney.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to: Literacy Volunteers of America, 263 Water St., Augusta, ME 04330.

SIDNEY

Marc R. Fontaine – age 47 of Robinson Rd., died Monday, October 29, 2001 at his home following a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was born on April 1, 1954 the son of Alberic J. and Julia D. (Patenaude) Fontaine.

Marc was a graduate of Cony High School, attended Northern Maine Technical College and was a communicant of St. Augustine Catholic Church.

He was the owner of Fontaine’s Plumbing and Heating, Inc. for the past 12 years and had previously worked at Bath Iron Works for 10 years.

Marc was a devoted husband and father. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping and was a supporter of Messalonskee Sports and the University of Maine Black Bear Ice Hockey team.

He is survived by his wife of 26 years Susan M. (Arbour) Fontaine of Sidney; his parents Alberic J. and Julia D. (Patenaude) Fontaine of Augusta; a son, Matthew M. Fontaine of Sidney; a daughter, Nicole M. Fontaine of Sidney; three brothers, Louis Fontaine and his wife Cheryl of Sidney, Charles Fontaine and his wife Sandra of Augusta and Wilfred Fontaine and his wife Elizabeth of Bolton, MA; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Relatives and friends may visit Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 11 AM at St. Augustine Catholic Church, Augusta. Burial will follow in Holy Family Cemetery, Townsend Rd., Augusta.

BELGRADE LAKES

Daniel J. Gagne – age 46 of Hulin Rd., died unexpectedly Thursday, October 4, 2001 at MaineGeneral Medical Center – Thayer Unit in Waterville. He was born in Augusta on August 1, 1955 the son of Rosaire and Florence (Labbe) Gagne.

Mr. Gagne attended Augusta schools, was a communicant of St. Augustine Catholic Church and was a U.S Marine veteran serving during the Vietnam War.

He had been employed at Bath Iron Works for 24 years.

Mr. Gagne married his soul mate, Diana Burnett on March 17, 1990.

He was a devoted father and husband. He dreamed of sailing off in a sailboat and loved the time he spent with his children.

Dan enjoyed fly fishing, his hot tub and being kind to his fellow man. He was a firm believer in God the Almighty, was a proud American and found peace in the community of the Belgrade Lakes Region.

Dan was also very proud of the ships he helped to build at Bath Iron Works.

Mr. Gagne was pre-deceased by his parents, Rosaire and Florence (Labbe) Gagne.

He is survived by his wife of 11 years Diana (Burnett) Gagne of Belgrade Lakes; a son, Isaac Daniel Gagne of Belgrade Lakes; two daughters, Katie Faye and Nikki Fantasia Gagne both of Belgrade Lakes; three brothers, Henry R. Gagne and his wife Donna of Warren, Dominique J. Gagne of Hallowell and Donald J. Gagne and his wife Laurie of South China; a sister, Constance E. Gagne of Duncan, SC; and aunt and uncle, Oscar and Jeannine Gagne of Château roux, France; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Relatives and friends may visit on Monday, October 8th from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at 12 noon at St. Augustine Catholic Church, Augusta. Burial will follow at Maine Veterans Memorial cemetery Old Yard on Civic Center Dr., Augusta.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Gagne Children Trust Fund, C/O Diana Gagne, P.O. Box 348, Belgrade Lakes, ME 04918.

RANDOLPH, ME

Victor A. Gagne - age 53 of South Maple St. and formerly of Maple Ave. in Andover, MA died unexpectedly September 1, 2001. He was born in Methuen, MA on November 12, 1947 the son of Elphege A. and Donalda D. (Derouin) Gagne.

Mr. Gagne was employed as a truck driver and Transportation Manager at Auto Parts Express in Maine and Massachusetts for over 30 years and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.

He is survived by his wife, Sally (Herron) Gagne of Randolph, ME; three sons, David H. Gagne, Scott A. Gagne and Robert Pellegrino, Jr.; two daughters, Michelle Lea Gagne and Jessica Brooks; three grandchildren and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

There will be no public visiting hours. Following cremation, a graveside service will be held at 11 AM on Thursday, September 6th at Elmwood Cemetery, Methuen, MA.

AUGUSTA

Evelina B. Gauthier – age 97 of Ballard Rd., died Saturday, October 13, 2001 at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation and Nursing Care at Gray Birch after a long illness. She was born in Shawmut on December 1, 1903 the daughter of Neree Morin and Anna (Dennis) Morin Gauthier.

“Vina” worked for area mills for most of her life. She enjoyed gardening, crocheting and reading.

She was a communicant of St. Augustine Catholic Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur, in 1968 and her brother, Michel Morin, in 1993.

Mrs. Gauthier is survived by two sons, Arthur B. J. Gauthier and his wife Tuan of Spanaway, WA and David L. Gauthier of Augusta; her granddaughter, Christine M. Woods and her husband Matthew of San Angelo, TX; a sister-in-law, Angelina Bulger of Winslow; several nieces, nephews and cousins and a special friend and care giver, Lucille Roussel.

Relatives and friends may visit on Monday from 7-9 PM at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at 11 AM at St. Augustine Catholic Church.

Burial will follow in the family lot at St. Francis de Sales Cemetery, Waterville.

Instead of flowers, donations may be made to St. Augustine School, 5 Kendall St., Augusta, ME 04330.

LEWISTON, MAINE

Mark Leon Gorman - age 42, died August 1, 2001 at Russell Park Manor, Lewiston where he had been a patient for five years.

He was born in Santa Monica, Calif. on June 15, 1959 the son of Regina (Fletcher) Gorman and the late Leo M. Gorman. Mark had attended schools in Framingham, Mass.

He is survived by his mother, Regina (Fletcher)Diplock of Winthrop; his step-father Robert C. Diplock of Winthrop; three step-sisters, Donna Carrigan of Bellingham, Mass., Mary Flaherty of Attleboro, Mass. and Robyn Savoy of Augusta, ME; six step-brothers, Michael Gorman of Marlboro, Mass., David Diplock of Winthrop, ME, John Diplock of Readfield, Peter, Tom & Charles Diplock all of Augusta, ME. He is also survived by aunts Frances Ayotte and Nancy Crook, uncles David Fletcher of Augusta, Fremont Fletcher of Seminole, FL and Thomas Fletcher of Westford, Mass.; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mark was the grandson of the late Leon & Helen Fletcher of Augusta, ME.

Visiting hours are 6-8 PM Friday, August 3rd at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:00 AM Saturday at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, Augusta with Rev. George Hickey, officiating. Burial will follow in Readfield Corner Cemetery, Readfield.

Lois Davis Johnson - age 74, died Friday, August 17, 2001 at the home of her daughter, Karen, after a very difficult battle with cancer. She was born in Bryant Pond, May 30, 1927 the daughter of Walter Davis and Eva Erickson.

She attended schools in Bryant Pond and graduated in 1948 from Central Maine School of Nursing.

She was employed in the original Augusta General Hospital for many years, she had also been employed at the Veterans Administration Medical and Regional Office Center-Togus. She did much private duty nursing and finished her career at the Alzheimer's Center in Gardiner, where she spoke often of the wonderful staff and how she loved them.

Lois enjoyed a simple life with her loves being her family, friends and, of course, her antiques. She operated an antique shop in Hallowell for a brief period. She was a true nurturer and always sacrificed much for others, especially her family.

She was pre-deceased by her mother, Eva Erickson and her step-father, John T. Erickson.

She will be greatly missed by her 2 sons, Michael S. Johnson and his wife Debra of Manchester and Robert S. Johnson and his wife Kandis of South Gardiner; three daughters, Wendy Johnson and her best friend Pam Isham of Manchester, Karen Johnson of Augusta and Kellie Johnson and her husband Sedgewick "Peter" Armstrong; eight grandchildren, Shawn and Travis Johnson, Amanda and Kiley Bonenfant, Corey and Bobby Johnson and Shaun and Victoria Levins. A special thanks and recognition to Bob Johnson and Bob Bonenfant and her many wonderful friends.

At her request, there will be no public hours of visitation. A committal service will be conducted Wednesday morning at 11:00 in the Chapel of the new Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mt. Vernon Rd., Augusta.

Portland

Philip N. Hunter – 62 of 18 Gorges St. Portland died unexpectedly Sunday October 28 at the Veterans Administration Medical and Regional Office Center,

Togus. He was born in Portland December 24, 1938 the son of Hartford N. and Elizabeth F. (Hansen) Hunter.

Mr. Hunter was a Viet Nam and Korean War Veteran having served with the United States Marine Corps. He had been employed at C.N. Brown for several years and had previously been employed at Hague International as a Machinist for over 20 years.

Survivors include three sons: Philip Cook and Dwayne Cook both of Washington State and Raymond N. Hunter of Portland; three daughters: Marina McGowen and Lalani Cook both of Washington State and Eva Mavis of South Portland, a step-daughter: Therese Kirkpatrick of Texas; a sister Dorothy Thoms of Lewiston; also seven grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

At his request, there will be no viewing or hours of visitation.

A graveside committal service will be conducted at 10 A.M., Wednesday at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta with the Rev. Raymond Lagace, Catholic Chaplain at the V.A. Center, officiating.

AUGUSTA

Geneva “Jean” E. Kanaris – age 63 of Bond Brook Rd., died Wednesday, November 21, 2001 at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation & Nursing Care at Gray Birch Drive after a long illness. She was born in Calais on August 30, 1938 the daughter of Dalton A. and Verna (Long) Bridges.

Geneva had been employed by Woodmaster of Maine for 35 years and was a communicant of St. Augustine Catholic Church.

She was known for her home made pickles which went by the label, “Jeans Gormet Goodies”. She also enjoyed making crafts and selling them at local craft fairs during holidays.

Mrs. Kanaris was a member of the Eagles Aeire 3137 Ladies Auxiliary of Augusta and Kennebec Valley Hobbies.

She was pre-deceased by her father, Dalton A. Bridges.

Mrs. Kanaris is survived by her husband of 42 years, Robert J. Kanaris, Sr of Augusta; her mother, Verna (Long) Day of Gardiner; her step-father, Bernard Grant of Gardiner; two sons, Robert Kanaris, Jr. and his wife Dot of Mt. Vernon and David Kanaris and his wife Holly of Augusta; two daughters, Maria Caron and her husband David of Pittston and Susan Greeley of Litchfield; a brother, Dalton L. Bridges of Arizona; two sisters, Mary Long and her husband George of Gardiner and Ruth Hanna and her husband Bob of Central Point, OR; seven grandchildren, Shaun, Chris and Jacob Kanaris, Magen and Marc Bartlett, Cameron Kanaris and Adam Greeley; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Relatives and friends may visit from 9-11 AM on Friday, November 23rd at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta where a funeral service will be held at 11 AM with Rev. Richard St. Cyr officiating.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: American Cancer Society, New England Division, Inc., 52 Federal St., Brunswick, ME 04011.
