AUGUSTA

Irene V. Roy – age 86 of Townsend St., died Monday, February 10, 2003 at the Augusta Rehabilitation Center following a long illness. She was born in Waterville on December 12, 1916 a daughter of John and Philomene (Poulin) Veilleux.

Mrs. Roy attended Waterville schools and was a home maker for most of her life.

She was a communicant of St. Augustine Catholic Church and was a former member of St. Paul Cursillo Prayer Group.

Mrs. Roy was pre-deceased by her husband, Romeo Roy and several brothers and sisters.

She is survived by three sons, Romeo Roy and his wife Bertha of Chelsea, Raymond Roy and his wife Julie of Morehead City, NC and Richard Roy of Lewiston; two daughters, Jeannette Tondreau and her husband Roger of Augusta and Jacqueline Grenier of Farmingdale; a brother, Anthony Veilleux of Waterville; a sister, Victoria Lepage of Waterville; 12 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, 3 great great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Relatives and friends may visit today from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 11 AM at St. Augustine Catholic Church, Northern Ave., Augusta. Burial will be in the spring in the family lot in Holy Family Cemetery, Townsend Rd., Augusta.

Those who desire may make donations to: St. Augustine Church Restoration Fund, 5 Kendall St., Augusta, ME 04330.

AUGUSTA

Gladys M. Sawyer – age 87, a longtime resident of Dayton Street, died February 3, 2003 at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation & Nursing Care at Graybirch Drive. She was born in Linneus, Maine on April 26, 1915 the daughter of Horace Stewart and Nettie (Hamilton) Stewart.

Mrs. Sawyer was a homemaker in her own home for most of her life.

She enjoyed needlework, oil painting, spending time with her family, and her cats.

Mrs. Sawyer was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church and the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary.

Her husband, Robert P. Sawyer, Sr., died on July 18, 1987.

Surviving are seven children: Robert P. Sawyer, Jr. and his wife Betty Lou of Gouldsboro, Margaret E. MacDonald and her husband Robert F. of North Bridgton, Frederic E. Sawyer and his wife Sally J. of Bryant Pond, Judith A. Jenkins of Tahsis, British Columbia, Canada, Mary E. Stevens, Joan F. Sawyer and Gayle A. Sawyer, all of Augusta; a sister, Madeline Miller and her husband William of Presque Isle; nine grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

There will be no public visiting hours. Committal prayers will be offered by Rev. Peter Inchcombe at 1:00 PM Thursday, Feb. 6th in the chapel at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Civic Center Drive, Augusta. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Robert P. Sawyer, Sr. Scholarship Fund, 7 Dayton Street, Augusta, ME 04330. Arrangements are under the care of Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta, Maine.

AUGUSTA

Ruth C. Soucie – age 74, of Campbell Street, died February 24, 2003 at MaineGeneral Medical Center after a brief illness. She was born in Dexter, Maine on July 2, 1928 the daughter of John D. Mosley and Marjorie (Farr) Mosley.

Mrs. Soucie was a 1946 graduate of Dexter High School. Even though she was a homemaker in her own home for most of her life, Mrs. Soucie had been employed as a senior underwriter by Key Bank of Maine for 10 years. She was previously employed as an office manager by Brown Real Estate in Augusta for about 10 years.

Ruth will be remembered as a loving wife of 52 years, and a loving mother and grandmother. She was a woman who persevered through 22 military household moves in 21 years, and raised kids on her own when Norman was away. She was a lady who set a table from which you never left hungry; to the contrary, “have some more anyway” was her battle cry. She was adored by family and friends alike, and she cherished and helped them all before herself. She will be missed beyond description.

Surviving is her husband, Norman L. Soucie, Sr. of Augusta; two daughters, Janet Radsky of Augusta and Christina Cantillo of Atlanta, GA; two sons, Norman “Skip” Soucie II and Stephen Soucie, both of Atlanta, GA; one brother, Philip Mosley of Dexter, ME; three sisters, Arlene Creech of Hamlet, NC, Marilyn Cox of Augusta, ME and Janet Woodward of Newport, ME; nine grandchildren: Robert and Shannon Radsky, Taylor and Bailey Soucie, Norman “Trip” Soucie III, Hale, Connor and Sawyer Soucie, and Arianna Cantillo; nieces & nephews: Patty Fox, Debbie Raymond, Pam Newcomb, Kelley Haskell, Eugene Mosley, John Mosley, David Mosley, Paul Mosley, Jackie Havens & David Creech, Jr..

Ruth was preceded in death by a brother, Eugene Mosley, who died in World War II.

Visiting hours are 2-4 & 6-8 PM Thursday, Feb. 27th at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta where a funeral service will be held 10:00 AM Friday with Rev. Gilbert Patenaude, officiating. Burial will be in Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Beals Hospitality House, One VA Center, Togus, ME 04330.

Manchester

Harriet Julia Sweetland – age 102, of the Pond Road, died peacefully in her sleep after a pleasant Thanksgiving Day with her family. Harriet was born in Whitefield, Maine on May 27, 1900 the daughter of William and Ann (Williams) Grady. She married George P. Sweetland on May 3, 1922 and they moved to Manchester in 1943.

Harriet enjoyed her family and friends and the beauty of the seasons. She especially loved watching her great-grandchildren grow and play. She was involved in the Grange for 70 years, the Telephone Pioneers of America, Manchester Cooperative Extension, St. Mary’s Guild and was a founding member of the YNI Club. She was a communicant of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church for many years.

Harriet was predeceased by her husband, George P. Sweetland; a son, William Sweetland; a daughter, Barbara Sylvester; a son-in-law, Robert F. Sylvester and her brothers: Ambrose, Arthur, William, Charles, John and Joseph Grady, and sisters: Edith Grady and Katherine Hersom Hayes.

She is survived by her sister, Ann Collier of Manchester; her grandchildren: Stephen J. Sylvester and David J. Sylvester of Manchester, William J. Sylvester and his wife Elfi of Monmouth, Robert J. Sylvester of Juneau, Alaska, Barbara J. Pellett and her husband Mark of Winthrop and Elizabeth J. Raph of Winthrop; and her great-grandchildren: Adam and Aurora Sylvester of Juneau, Alaska, Andrew Pellett of Winthrop, Sean Raph, Caitlin Raph and Patrick Raph of Winthrop; also numerous nieces, nieces, nephews and cousins with whom she enjoyed visiting.

A funeral service will be conducted Wednesday December 4, 2002 at 3 P.M. at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta.

AUGUSTA

Elizabeth “Betty” Violette – age 86 of Eastern Ave. and formerly of Page St., died Sunday, February 2, 2003 at Augusta Rehabilitation Center following a long illness. She was born in Brunswick on December 24, 1916 the daughter of James and Marion V. (Vermette) Snow.

Mrs. Violette was a graduate of Canton High School where she was valedictorian of her class.

She had been a home maker for most of her life, but had worked for many years at the Veterans Hospital at Togus.

She also played piano for Devina Slosberg Mudge.

Mrs. Violette was pre-deceased by her husband, Philip Violette and a brother, James Snow.

She is survived by a son, John William “Bill” Condon and his wife Marilyn E. Condon of Winthrop; two brothers, Harry Snow of West Bath and David Snow of Delaware; a granddaughter, Lynn Paradis of Livermore Falls; four great-grandchildren, Jamilyn Paradis, Audrey Paradis, Ben Condon and Brian Condon; two great great-grandchildren, Brandon Condon and Bradley Condon and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

At her request, there will be no public visiting hours. A committal service will be held on Wednesday at 11 AM at the Fr. Leonard Leclair Memorial Chapel at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Civic Center Dr., Augusta. Burial will follow the committal service.

SACO

Tami D. Stout – age 15, of Moody Street, died unexpectedly Wednesday, March 5, 2003 at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Augusta. She was born in Rochester, NH on August 7, 1987 the daughter of Thomas Stout and Sherri Batchelder.

Tami was a kid that, even through tough times, could put a smile on her face and be caring toward others. She loved people and animals of all kinds , especially her favorite dog, Marlo, and her pet rats.

If home is where the heart is, then Tami’s home was in Hallowell where she will be missed by her former foster family, Bill & Leah Bowden of Hallowell, her foster sister, Sara Bowden of Chelsea, and her foster brother, Michael Bowden of Hallowell.

She loved her foster grandparents, Doris Rivard and the late George Rivard of Hallowell. Tami will be remembered by many neighbors and friends in the area.

She was a member of Modern Woodman of America Junior Service Club.

Surviving are her parents, Thomas Stout and Sherri Batchelder; two brothers and one sister.

There will be no public visiting hours. A Celebration of her life will be held on Sunday, March 9th from 2-4 pm at the home of Bill & Leah Bowden, 307 Water Street, Hallowell.

Memorial contributions may be made to: Kennebec Valley Humane Society, Pet Haven Lane, Augusta, ME 04330.

BRUNSWICK

Hazel M. Sharp – age 92 of Cumberland St., and formerly of Rt. 32 in Windsor, died Monday, March 10, 2003 at Amenity Manor, Topsham, following a long illness. She was born in Prince Edward Island, Canada on June 23, 1910 a daughter of Russell and Annie (Hanson) Cotton.

Mrs. Sharp was a homemaker for most of her life and was a member of Penny Memorial United Baptist Church in Augusta.

She was pre-deceased by her first husband, Ernest Bartlett; her second husband, Arnold Sharp and a daughter, Betty Fortin.

Mrs. Sharp is survived by two sons, Richard Bartlett and Reuben Bartlett both of Windsor; a daughter, Barbara Small of Lake Havasu, AZ; a brother, Sterling Cotton of Prince Edward Island, Canada; a sister, Dolly Coughlin of Prince Edward Island, Canada; 26 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

At her request, there will be no public visiting hours. A graveside service will be held in the spring at Wall Cemetery, Riverside Dr., Augusta.

AUGUSTA

Jeannette M. Albert – age 75 of Hicks Rd., died Monday, March 17, 2003 at MaineGeneral Medical Center following a long illness. She was born in Augusta on November 4, 1927 a daughter of Fred and Beatrice (Thibodeau) Gaboury.

Mrs. Albert was a homemaker for most of her life and worked for several years at Kenmore Stamp Co. in Milford, CT.

She is survived by her husband, Edward Albert of Augusta; a brother, Robert Gaboury of Las Vegas, NV; three sisters, Rita Evers of Augusta, Muriel Belgrade of Gardiner and Lorraine Bumford of Florida and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

There will be no public visiting hours or funeral service. Burial will be in the new Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mt. Vernon Rd., Augusta at the convenience of the family.

AUGUSTA, MAINE

Josephine R. Trozzi – age 87, of Glenridge Drive, formerly of Milton, Mass. and Lower Narrows, Winthrop, ME, died March 9, 2003 at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation & Nursing Care at Glenridge Drive after a long illness. She was born in Lincoln, Maine on Nov. 14, 1915 the daughter of Carl Mott and Dora (Bartlett) Mott. Dora later married Richard Fowles.

Mrs. Trozzi was a homemaker in her own home for most of her life, but had been employed briefly as a teller for a Boston, Mass. bank.

Her husband, Frederick C. Trozzi, died in 1993.

Surviving are four sons: Harry Hawkins of Page, Ariz., Dr. Joseph C. Trozzi of Augusta, Dr. Frederick C. Trozzi of Scituate, MA and Dr. Thomas M. Trozzi of Daytona Beach, FL; three brothers, Gerome Mott of Bucksport, ME, Harry Fowles of Arizona and Dick Fowles of Palm Bay, FL; four grandchildren: Scott Hawkins, Elizabeth Trozzi, Melissa Trozzi and Justin Trozzi; several nieces and nephews.

There will be no public visiting hours. A graveside Memorial service will be held in Milton Cemetery, Milton, Mass. in the spring.

We celebrate the life of Dr. Stephen James Karvelas who died at his home in Augusta, Maine at the age of 91 on March 10, 2003. He was a cherished gift to Loretta (Barkas) Karvelas - his beloved wife of 60 glorious years.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 15, at their parish, the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church of Lewiston, 155 Hogan Road.

Stephen was born in Athens, Greece, on August 26, 1911. His mother and father, James Karvelas and Angelica Mastorakis sought a new life in America and brought Stephen and his siblings to the United States in 1913. They first landed in New Hampshire but then settled in Gloucester, Massachusetts, where Stephen spent his childhood and formative years.

Stephen pursued a career in optometry. He studied at the Massachusetts College of Optometry (n/k/a the New England College of Optometry) and received a doctorate in 1937. He began his optometry practice in Augusta in 1939. He answered his country’s call and enlisted in the Navy in December of 1941. Following basic training, he was initially based in the Fargo Barracks in Boston. He was fortunate in April of 1942 to meet the love of his life, Loretta. They married on November 22, 1942. He then served 16 months in the North Pacific aboard the Sub-Chaser #998. He also served during the war as head of the United States Navy Optometric clinic in San Diego. Before being honorably discharged in 1945 he attained the rank of full lieutenant. Following the war Stephen resumed his optometry practice in Augusta in February of 1946. He enjoyed a long and distinguished practice and retired in 1979.

Stephen was a member of the Greek Orthodox Holy Trinity Church in Lewiston where he and Loretta expressed their devotion by singing in the choir. He was also a member of the Augusta Kiwanis Club and a lifetime member of the Maine, New England, and American Optometric Associations.

Stephen and Loretta enjoyed active and full lives. They shared countless interests, travels, and adventures. They reveled in family, opera, golf, and skiing. Stephen was known to combine these loves and would often serenade his beloved Loretta and friends. Stephen and Loretta traveled extensively throughout Europe, primarily Greece and Italy. Through his travels Stephen discovered and developed his gift for oil painting. He was fortunate to be able to study painting in Florence. While on travel he spent hours capturing with his brush and oils nature’s beauty – his favorite subjects being enchanted views of Greece and Italy.

Stephen was predeceased by his brothers, Peter and Charles Karvelas, and sisters Mary Rentoumis, Stavroula Rouvalis, and Athena Thanos. Stephen approached life with tender reverence. He was a gentle and steady presence who touched countless souls with his guileless and true heart. Stephen’s memory will be lovingly carried on by his wife, Loretta and by many devoted nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, Godchildren and dear friends.

Stephen’s family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m., with a Trisagion Service at 6 pm on Friday, March 14, at the Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta, Maine. Memorial contributions may be made to the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 155 Hogan Road, Box 1344, Lewiston, Maine, 04243-1344.
