Wendi Lynn White

BURNHAM - Wendi Lynn White, 47, a resident of Burnham and former resident of Monmouth, died Sunday, March 12, 2006, in Winthrop. She was born May 1, 1958, in Waterville, the daughter of David L. and Gloria (Brooks) White. She attended school in Pittsfield.

Wendi worked in health care, going into homes and doing what needed to be done for her clients. She was an artist who enjoyed painting, stained glass and photography, especially photographing her family. Wendi was an outdoor person who loved gardening and travel.

She is survived by her parents, David and Gloria White of Pittsfield; three daughters, Honesty St. Clair of Monmouth, Delight Cook of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Kyla Simard and her husband, Matthew, of Auburn; two brothers, Davey White Jr. and Gregory White, both of Pittsfield; one sister, Lecia Wilson of Pittsfield; three grandchildren, Autumn Chapman, Justyce and Hart St. Clair; and also her ex-husband, Kimble Chapman.

Memorial services will be held 1 p.m. Sunday, March 19, at Bragdon-Finley Funeral Home, 707 Main St., Monmouth. Messages of condolence may be sent to the family at bfinleyfh@adelphia.net.

Joseph R. LeMay

UNITY - Joseph R. LeMay, 89, of Unity, passed away Sunday, March 12, 2006, at Shore Village Nursing Home in Rockland. He was born in New York on Jan. 14, 1917, the son of Joseph and Velzamere (LeMeaux) LeMay.

Aug. 19, 1937, he married the former Dorothy May Schmitz and they shared 63 years together until her death on Jan. 1, 2001. Joseph was a carpenter by trade and thoroughly enjoyed his occupation. In his earlier years he managed several dairy farms. He attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Waterville, was a member of the Unity Snowmobile Club, and also a member of the Sportsman's Alliance of Maine. Joseph enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening.

Besides his wife, Dorothy, he was predeceased by his parents, one brother and three sisters.

Joseph is survived by his four children, Robert LeMay and his wife, Sally, of Pennsylvania, Marie Veselis and her husband, Bill, of Benton, Frances Slocum and her husband, Richard, of Point Pleasant, N.J., and Jim LeMay and his wife, Mare, of China; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are invited for a time of memorial visitation 2-4 p.m. Saturday, March 18, at Lawry Brothers Memorial and Remembrance Centre (Unity Centre for the Performing Arts building), 42 Depot St., Unity.

Donations may be made in Joseph's memory to the Sportsman's Alliance of Maine, 205 Church Hill Road, Augusta, ME 04330.

Gertrude M. (Halloran) Minton

UNITY - Gertrude M. (Halloran) Minton, 95, of Jamaica Plain, Mass., and Unity, died March 11, 2006.

She was beloved wife of the late Thomas M. Minton; and loving mother of Thomas M. Jr. of McLean, Va., Carole M. Hess of Garden City, N.Y., Richard L. of Madison, Conn., Roger M. of Gloucester, Mass., and Mark R. Minton of Easton, Mass. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. She was sister of the late Henry E. and Robert S. Halloran.

A funeral will be held from the Brady & Fallon Funeral Home, 10 Tower St. (opposite the Forest Hills MBTA Station), Jamaica Plain, at 9:15 a.m. Monday, March 20, followed by a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Andrew the Apostle Church. Relatives and friends are invited. Visiting hours will be 4-7 p.m. Sunday, March 19. Interment will be at St. Joseph Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Gertrude's memory may be made to The Dorothy W. Quimby Library at Unity College, 90 Quaker Hill Road, Unity, ME 04988.

Ida M. McGilly

THORNDIKE - Ida M. McGilly, 73, of Thorndike, passed away Tuesday, March 14, 2006, at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Waterville. She was born April 20, 1932, in Camden, N.J., the daughter of Alexander and Myrtle (Siddons) Murray.

She graduated from Cape May High School in New Jersey. She later met and married John McGilly in April 1950. Since 1964, she had lived in Thorndike. While living there, she and her husband sold real estate for more than 15 years. Ida was a member of St. Agnes Columbus Guild and past president; she was also secretary for the Maine Association of Catholic Women. She enjoyed oil painting, handicrafts, gardening, cooking, golfing, genealogy and listening to Irish music. Ida's greatest joy in life was all the time spent with her grandchildren.

She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Newell, and her husband, Donald, of Unity; three grandchildren, Ryan, Kelly and Emily; two sisters, Mary Ouellette of Nashua, N.H., and Barbara Farley of Wildomar, Calif.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her parents and her husband, John McGilly.

Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Sunday, March 19, at Donald H. Shorey Funeral Chapel, 35 Hartland Ave., Pittsfield. The rosary will be offered at 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 20, at St. Agnes Catholic Church, Detroit Avenue, Pittsfield, with Rev. Paul Pare officiating.

Donald F. Greenlaw

NORTH HAVEN - Donald F. Greenlaw, 83, died Tuesday, March 14, 2005 at Maine Medical Center in Portland, following a brief illness.

Born in Rockland, November 2, 1922, he was the son of Maynard & Elizabeth Smith Greenlaw. He was educated on North Haven. Mr. Greenlaw was a life long resident there.

As a young man Mr. Greenlaw began working with his father and grandfather in their carpentry business. To keep busy, he lobstered during the summer months and scalloped during the winter.

In February, 1943, Mr. Greenlaw entered the U.S. Army. He served overseas in Normandy and participated in the Battle of the Bulge.

Returning home in December, 1945, he met and married Betty A. Haskell on June 29, 1946 at the North Haven Baptist Church Parsonage. The couple continued to make their home and raise their family on North Haven.

After the war, Mr. Greenlaw continued to work as a carpenter and lobsterman. His wife remembers that he was always happiest when he was on the water lobstering. He also served as caretaker for Richard Saltonstal, caring for his property for many years.

In the mid 1990s Mr. Greenlaw officially retired, however he remained busy by completing puzzles with his daughter. He was an avid reader, and greatly enjoyed perusing the newspapers. Mr. Greenlaw continued to use his woodworking skills, building picnic tables and Adirondack chairs for many of summer residents. He could often be found puttering around his shop, listening to the Boston Red Sox game on the radio.

Mr. Greenlaw was predeceased by his sister Carolyn Adams. He is survived by his wife Betty Greenlaw of North Haven; his son James Greenlaw of North Haven; his daughters Brenda McMickle of Lyman, Donna Greenlaw of Biddeford; and two grandchildren Jacob Greenlaw, Emily Greenlaw both of North Haven.

Family and friends are invited to visit from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., Saturday, March 25, at Village Church, North Haven, where a celebration of his life will be held at 12:00 p.m. The Reverend David Macy will officiate. Interment will be announced in the spring.

Earl Charles Sprague

NORTHPORT - Earl Charles Sprague, 79, of Northport, passed away Monday, March 20, 2006, at Togus. He was born in Hallowell on May 7, 1926, the son of Earl and Edith (Childs) Sprague.

Earl worked at Maplewood Poultry for 30 years, and was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus William Brannigan Council. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, riding with "Casi," reading and watching westerns and cookouts with his family.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Earlene Roberts and a brother, Jack Sprague. Earl is survived by four sons, Terry Sprague and his wife, Patricia, Dennis Sprague and his wife, Judy, James Sprague and his wife, Torrie, and Earl A. Sprague; three brothers, Harold Sprague, Henry Sprague and Patrick Sprague; five grandchildren, Monica, Erica, Troy, Kayla and Austin; and two great-grandchildre, Lauren and Emma.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 25, at Crabiel-Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Ave., Belfast. Spring burial will take place at the City Point Cemetery, Belfast.

Elaine Warren

CAMDEN - Elaine Warren, 85, died Saturday, March 18, 2006 at The Courtyard at Quarry Hill.

Born July 5, 1920 in Boston, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of Wilbur and Marion Nixon Herrick.

Educated in Massachusetts schools, she was a graduate of Jeremiah Burke High School in Dorchester.

On August 30, 1952 she married Edson Warren in Charlton County, Georgia. The couple made their home in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. There she owned and operated Warren Business Service as a customs broker.

Mrs. Warren was an accomplished portrait artist, completing many works of people and animals. She studied at the Boston Museum of Art. Mrs. Warren enjoyed crossword puzzles and playing bridge with her friend, Audrey Buffington. She was a member of the Mid-Coast Physical Therapy Health Club at Trade Winds Motor Inn for over 15 years.

Predeceased by her husband, Mrs. Warren is survived by her good friend Audrey Buffington of South Thomaston.

No services are scheduled at this time.

Lovedy Ida Vowles

DAMARISCOTTA - Lovedy Ida Vowles, born in Bristol, England, August 20, 1923, passed away on March 16 after a brief illness. Lovedy grew up in England during the war years. She emigrated to this country in 1961 with her husband John and their three children. She loved sewing, cooking, and sailing with her husband, on the east and west coasts.

For many years she owned and operated Lovedy's Florist and Country Store in Goffstown, N.H. She moved with her family to Damariscotta, Maine seven years ago because she loved to be near the ocean, and her time spent here was very happy.

She was pre-deceased by her husband, E. John M. Vowles. She is survived by her sister, Lilian Britton of Bristol, England; sons John Milton Vowles of Vermont, Stephen Milton Vowles of Nobleboro; daughter Jill Breta Milton Baum of Damariscotta; much loved daughters in law, Sally Vowles and Priscilla McCandless; grandchildren Stephen Vowles and his wife Devon Pyle-Vowles, of Chicago; Robert Vowles and his wife Kathleen, of Hawaii; Jill Silva, her husband Mike, and great grandson Morgan Park Silva, of Cape Cod; Naomi Lovedy Baum of NY, NY; nephew Colin Britton, his wife Cathy, and children Jonathan and Victoria of Freeport; and by her large and loving family in England.

The family held a small, private gathering on Saturday, March 18 in Nobleboro to say farewell. They wish to thank the staff at Miles Memorial Hospital for their care and support of the whole family through this difficult time, and also the friends whose thoughtfulness made this time easier.

Contributions in Lovedy's memory may be made to Miles Memorial Hospital in care of the Development Office, 35 Miles St. Damariscotta, ME 04543.

E. Thomas Payne

DAMARISCOTTA - E. Thomas Payne, 80, a resident of Coves Edge in Damariscotta passed away March 20, 2006 after a long illness.

Tom was born July 8, 1925 in Waterbury, Connecticut the son of Frederick and Ella Hodgdon Payne. He was a graduate of Waldoboro High School, Class of 1943.

On July 3, 1943 Tom enlisted in the United States Navy serving as a First Class Petty Officer until his honorable discharge on July 10, 1943 in Boston.

For over 20 years, Tom was a purchasing agent at G.T.E. Sylvania in Waldoboro before taking early retirement in 1981.
He was a member of the VFW Post #4525

He was predeceased by his father, Frederick Payne, former governor and U.S. Senator

John Noyes Morrison

AUBURN - John N Morrison, 90, died March 31, 2006 at Clover Health Care in Auburn after a long illness.

He was born in Rumford on Dec. 4, 1915 and was the son of Robley H. and Leola (Noyes) Morrison. He grew up in Norway and graduated from Norway High School in 1933. He later graduated from the Auburn School of Commerce and then in 1951 from Boston University with a bachelor's degree in business education.

During World War II, John served for four years, most of that time in the European Theater, in the personnel department of the 57th Air Force. He taught briefly at Gardiner High School and then at Rockland District High School, retiring in 1974. He was a charter member of the School Administrative District 5 Teachers Credit Union, which is now the Knox County Federal Credit Union, and served that organization on the board of directors for many years.

He married Ruby Butler in 1945 and the couple made Thomaston their home for nearly 50 years. He was active in community affairs, serving on town committees and the school board. He was a member of the American Legion, the Thomaston Historical Society and Friends of Montpelier. He owned and operated the Thomaston Outboard Shop, which later became Snow Harbor.

His special interests included outdoor activities such as walking, hiking (especially in the Katahdin area) camping, boating and golf. He enjoyed reading and music, preferably that of the big bands.

He was predeceased by his daughter Rosanne and brother Robley.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years; a son, Schuyler and his partner Susan Wilson of South Windham; a sister-in-law, Elise B. Morrison of Auburn; a cousin, Sally Berglund of Michigan; and many nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held later at the Village cemetery in Thomaston.

Memorial donations may be made to the Federated Church, 8 Hyler St., Thomaston, ME 04861; or Alzheimer's Association, 163 Lancaster St., Portland, ME 04101.

Arrangements are with the Hall and Bibber Funeral Home and Cremation Service at 78 Main St. in Thomaston.
