Dora Winslow
2005-06-16

Dora Winslow, 75, a resident of Winterport, formerly of Newcastle and longtime resident of Boothbay Harbor, died Thursday, June 9 at her residence after a brief illness.

Born April 14, 1930 in Boothbay Harbor, she was the daughter of Sanford and Sarah Powers Winslow, and attended local schools.

Miss Winslow was employed in Boothbay Harbor as a house cleaner for several families.

She enjoyed crafts, doing puzzles and playing Bingo.

Survivors include her three sisters, Bertha Jones of Boothbay Harbor, twin sister Doris Winslow of Dover-Foxcroft and Sally Splude of Portland.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 20 at the Wylie cemetery in Boothbay.

Arrangements are entrusted to Simmons, Harrington and Hall Funeral Home of Boothbay.

Bessie Witherell dies
2005-10-28

Bessie J. Witherell, 89, died October 21.

She was born December 15, 1915, in Acton, MA, a daughter of Ernest C. and Hazel Robbins Frye.

Bessie married Lee F. Adams in 1933, and Gordon Witherell in 1947; Mr. Witherell died in 2001.

She enjoyed square dancing, playing cards and spending winters in Florida. She was an avid Red Sox fan, and was one of the first and last customers each season at the frozen-custard stand in New Gloucester. She was a longtime member of the First Congregational Church of Gray.

Bessie and her husband owned and operated a Dairy Queen in Rumford and the Little HOBO Restaurant in Lewiston.

She is survived by her two sons, Lee F. Adams, Jr., and his wife Eileen, of New Vineyard, and Daniel Adams, of Oxford; a brother, Albert Frye, of Cumberland; three sisters, Evelyn Thurston, of Cumberland, Beatrice Spulick, of Somerset, NJ, and Ella Thompson, of South Portland; grandchildren Lee Adams III, Ellis Adams, Dale Stair, Jeffrey Adams, Scott Adams and Rhonda Henrichsen; great-grandchildren Dustin Adams, Darren Adams, Tyler Adams, Jacci Adams, Shane Adams and Parker Stair.

A funeral was held on Tuesday at the First Congregational Church of Gray, with Reverend Douglas Hedstrom officiating; committal is in Blanchard Cemetery, Falmouth. Arrangements were under the care of Wilson Funeral Home, Gray.

Patricia Wood dies after long illness

Patricia Joanne Wood (Thurlow), 45, of Gray, received her wings to be with God on January 3, 2005. She fought a gallant and courageous battle with a brain tumor for over 17 years.

Pat was the very proud daughter to Robert Listin and Constance Marie (Avery) Thurlow. Her dad, Robert, passed away in March of 1992 and had been greatly missed. Pat was born on February 3, 1959, at Maine Medical and grew up in Yarmouth. She graduated from Yarmouth High School in 1977. She worked taking care of the elderly which she loved, helping others.

Pat met Robert William "Woody" Wood in 1976. Several years later, they married and had two beautiful sons. They were blessed on March 2, 1982, with the birth of Jonathan Robert and again blessed on January 2, 1985, with the birth of James William. They separated the end of 1986 and later divorced. On February 2, 1987, one month after Woody and Pat separated; Pat was diagnosed with her first brain tumor.

In June of 1987, Pat met William Jeffery "Bill" Anketell, who has been her companion ever since. On November 9, 1988, they were blessed with their daughter Jessica Marie. Soon after Jessica's first birthday, Pat had her first surgery to remove her brain tumor. Pat had several recurrent tumors thereafter. She was determined to live each day and not allow a brain tumor to put her life on hold.

In 1996, Pat became her daughter Jessica's caregiver when Jessica was diagnosed with syringomyelia, a spinal cord cyst disorder. She was a very strong advocate for Jessica medically and for her education. Pat was also an Auxiliary Member of Post # 86 American Legion.

It was the greatest honor and passion in her life to have her three children; Jon, James and Jess, who were her world.

Pat is survived and will be greatly missed by her children;. her companion, Bill; her mom, Constance Thurlow; her big sis, Elizabeth "Betsey" Barter; brother-in-law Fred; and nephews Ed and Dan. Her little bro, Robert "Bub" Thurlow, Jr.; nieces Laura and Katie; and the many friends she made throughout her life.

A celebration of her life will be held at 1 P.M. Saturday at the American Legion Post # 86, Lewiston Road, Gray.

In lieu of flowers, Pat would like any donations to go toward research in finding a cure for brain tumors and syringomyelia. "To love someone is to learn the song in their heart and sing it to them when they have forgotten."

Virginia B. Wood
2005-01-20

Virginia Brown Wood, died at her home in Newcastle on Saturday January 15.

Born June 17, 1921 in So. Bristol, she was a daughter of Ralph and Lena R. Brown.

Mrs. Wood was predeceased by her husband, David W. Wood; a sister, Arlene Ronning; and by her brother, Willard Brown.

Survivors include a son, Eric M. Wood, and daughter-in-law, Mary L. Wood, both of Boothbay; one daughter, Rachel E. Wood of Newcastle; grandchildren, Justin David Wood and Allison Kate Wood, both of Boothbay; sisters, Eleanor Sherman of Richmond and Dorothy Penniman of New Harbor.

A private service will be held.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are under the care of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home of Boothbay.

Dorothy A. Woodard
2006-01-12

Dorothy Ann Woodard, 57, of Jonesboro, George, died Tuesday, December 13, 2005.

Dorothy Ann Geneau was born in Bath, and was raised as the daughter of William and Mary Stinson of Wiscasset. In 1967 she graduated from Wiscasset High School.

She was predeceased by her adoptive parents, William and Mary Stinson; and a daughter, Renae.

Survivors include her husband of 36 years, Donald G. Woodard; and two daughters, Connie and Donna; and two granddaughters, all of Jonesboro, Ga.; two adoptive brothers, John and wife Nancy Stinson of Jackson, Mo., and Lowell and wife Priscilla Stinson of Wiscasset.

A funeral service was held Friday, December 16 at the Pope Dickerson & Son Funeral Home in Jonesboro, Ga.

Marvel Wynn
2002-12-26

Marvel Leona Whiteleather Wynn, 87, died December 17 in her home at Piper Shores, Scarborough.

She was born unexpectedly on December 14, 1915 at her grandmother's house in Canton Ohio, the second of four children of Ray and Leona Whiteleather. Weighing only four pounds at birth, her mother said she was truly a "Marvel," a name that suited her throughout her life.

She grew up in Canton, Ohio and graduated in the class of 1934 at Canton McKinley High School where she was secretary of her class.

Mrs. Wynn was an artist all of her life, drawing on a talent that ran in her family. She received her first oil paint set at the age of 14, a gift from her parents. Her first serious painting was a likeness of Betsy Ross, which she gave to her school principal who hung it in his office. She began seriously studying art at the Margaret Morrison school at the then Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie Mellon) in Pittsburgh. She later studied at the Cleveland Art Institute, taking classes with one of her favorite painters, John Tyrol.

During her career, she also studied with figure painters Sigmund Abeles and Jan DeRuth. Her work has appeared in the National Painting Show at the Butler Institute of Art in Youngstown, Ohio, the Farnsworth Museum in Rockland, and in one-person shows at Bowdoin College, the Performing Arts Center and the Portland Ballet Company. She has had several one-person shows at the Mast Cove Galleries in Kennebunkport where she exhibited for 22 years. In 1975, she received the International Women's Year Award for "outstanding cultural contributions and dedication to women and art."

She painted primarily figures of women, although occasionally a man, a landscape, or a seascape would draw her attention. Describing her own work, she said, "Most of my subjects have eyes." She was greatly influenced by artists Gustav Klimpt and Will Barnet.

Mrs. Wynn's attachment to Maine began in 1957 when she spent a two-week vacation on Southport Island. "That did it," she said. "I couldn't forget the surf and the seagulls!" Several years later she moved from Cleveland, Ohio to become a year-round resident of Southport Island where she had a spacious studio. In 1984, she moved to Yarmouth where she enjoyed painting in her studio overlooking the Royal River.

She continued to make friends throughout her life and enjoyed keeping in touch with her many friends from Ohio, Southport Island, Yarmouth, and Piper Shores.

She was predeceased by her first husband, John Rice DeWitt; her second husband, Edwin (Ned) H. Wynn; and her sister, Elizabeth Seymour.

Survivors include her sister, Molly Denniston of Deerfield Beach, Florida; her brother, Thomas Whiteleather of Sebring, Florida; her daughter, Wendy DeWitt Taylor and her husband Dr. J. Michael Taylor of Portland; her daughter, Holly Wynn Borden and her husband Thomas L. Borden of Canton, Ohio; and grandchildren, Paul Wynn Borden, Valerie Wynn Borden, Jennifer Taylor Hendrick and her husband Bud, Laura Taylor Singer and her husband Jonathan, and Andrew F. Taylor and his wife, Lisa.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, December 21 at Williston-West Church, U.C.C., 32 Thomas Street in Portland. Her ashes will be buried in the spring in the White-leather family plot in the rolling farmland of Minerva, Ohio where her parents are buried.

Should friends so desire, donations may be made in lieu of flowers to the United Way of Greater Portland, 400 Congress Street, Portland, ME 04112, or to a charity of their choice.

Herman N. Wright Jr.
2005-05-05

Herman N. Wright Jr., 79, of Bath, died Monday, April 25 at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick.

Born in Boston, Mass. on December 11, 1925, he was a son of Herman N. and Dorothy H. (Breed) Wright.

Mr. Wright attended Bath and Brunswick schools and entered the United States Marine Corp where he served in World War II.

In November of 1947 he married Sally P. Johansen. He worked for Chapmans garagein Bath as a mechanic. He and his brother owned and operated Wrights American in Bath for many years. Mr. Wright moved his business to Edgecomb in 1995 and began Wrights Auto Repair where he and his sons co-operated until present. He was very well known for his mechanic abilities especially in electrical.

Mr. Wright was a member of the American Legion Smith-Tobey Post in Bath and the Masonic Lodge in Bath.

He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and also enjoyed his computer and watching old movies.

Survivors include his wife, Sally P. Wright of Bath; three sons, Herman N. Wright III and his wife Valarie A., Brian K. Wright and his wife Heidi, and Bruce R. Wright and his wife Cindy, all of Edgecomb; four daughters, Ida May Decker, Kathryn H. Swain and her husband Allan, and Diane E. Little and her fianc Scott Clifford, all of Edgecomb, and Debbie L. Knowlton and her husband Rick of Bath; one brother, Donald K. Wright; and one sister, Marilyn Anderson and her husband Tom, all of Bath; 18 grandchildren;nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by six brothers, George Wright, Larry Wright, Everett Wright, Robert Wright, Richard Wright and David Wright; and one great-grand-daughter, Arianna Swain.

Visiting hours were held at the Mayo, Curtis & Hill Funeral Home in Bath followed by an American Legion Service. A funeral service was held Thursday, April 28 at the funeral home with Pastor Dan Coffin officiating. Burial followed at Oak Grove cemetery in Bath with full military honors. A gathering of family and friends followed at the American Legion in Bath.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Barbara Bush Childrens Hospital Development Office, 22 Bramhall Street, Portland, 04102.

Michael E. Wylie
2005-08-11

Michael E. Wylie, 52, of Boothbay, died Wednesday, August 3 at St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor.

Born December 30, 1952 in Boothbay Harbor, he was a son of Samuel Wylie and Pauline Giles Wylie. He grew up in the Boothbay Region and attended local schools.

Mr. Wylie worked as a carpenter with Robert Holmes for many years. He was an avid reader and was very interested in Indian history and folklore.

He enjoyed playing music and singing, and was an avid Beatles and New York Yankees fan. He was a father figure to all of the kids in his extended family.

Mr. Wylie was predeceased by his parents; and two brothers, Gary and Cris Wylie.

Survivors include many aunts, uncles and cousins

Visiting hours were held Sunday, August 7 at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay. A funeral service was held Monday, August 8 at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Dorr officiating. Burial followed in the Oaklawn cemetery in Boothbay Harbor.

Arrangements were entrusted to Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Boothbay.

Cris A. Wylie
2005-01-06

Cris A. Wylie, 44, of Boothbay, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, December 30, 2004 in Bath.

Born in Boothbay Harbor on June 28, 1960, he was the son of Samuel L. and Pauline D. Giles Wylie.

He attended Boothbay Region High School and was a member of the class of 1978.

Mr. Wylie made his living as a commercial fisherman, harvesting lobsters and clams, mostly from the Damariscotta River, which he loved. He also did carpentry work during the off season for numerous local building contractors.

His interest included a lifelong love of learning and desire for knowledge on any subject. He could frequently be found reading the encyclopedia and studying the dictionary in his spare time. He was creatively gifted in the arts.

His many talents included, playing the guitar, playing the drums, writing songs, singing, and writing poetry. He loved reading, baseball (Red Sox being his favorite), The Beatles (John Lennon being his favorite), anything to do with music or with WW II.

Mr. Wylie was predeceased by his parents, Samuel L and Pauline D. Giles Wylie; and a brother, Gary L. Wylie.

Survivors include one brother, Michael E Wylie of Boothbay; one son, Cris-Hawk Farrin, of Peaks Island; many aunts; uncles; and cousins; his companion, Cristal Homan, and her children Jason and Jessica, of Bath.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, January 6 at Simmons Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, 975 Wiscasset Road in Boothbay.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of Simmons Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.
