Ernest Beaudoin Jr., 71

SACO - Ernest Beaudoin Jr., 71, of Union Street, died Nov. 19, 2002.

He was born July 27, 1931 in Biddeford, a son of Ernest Sr. and Lena (Bossie) Beaudoin, and attended Thornton Academy.

He was employed by Corning/AVX in Kennebunk for 35 years, retiring in 1995.

He enjoyed working and gardening.

A brother, Paul, died previously.

Surviving are his former wife, Madeline (Harriman) Beaudoin of Saco; two sons, John Ernest of Saco and Kenneth Allen of Limerick; one daughter, Ann-Marie Beaudoin Meyer of Rochester, N.Y.; one brother, Donald of Saco; two sisters, Theresa Tripp and Dolly Tripp, both of Saco; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Henry Butcher Jr., 83

SACO - Henry A. "Uncle Henry" Butcher Jr., 83, of High Street, formerly of West Townsend, Mass., died Nov. 18, 2002 at home.

He was born in Lincoln, Mass., on April 4, 1919, he was a son of Henry A. Sr. and Elizabeth (Holman) Butcher, and graduated from Lincoln High School.

He was employed by the Department of Transportation for 33 years. He was also a self-employed locksmith.

An Army veteran of World War II who served on Iwo Jima, he was a member of the American Legion, a Mason with the Frank W. Thompson Lodge in Bedford, Mass., and a Shriner with the ALEPPO Temple in Massachusetts. He was an avid fisherman who also enjoyed making clocks.

His wife, Margaret A. (Ackley) Butcher, died in May 1997.

He is survived by one niece, Marion Peterson of Clearwater, Fla.

Rheal Cantara, 91

SACO - Rheal "Joe" Cantara, 91, of Middle Street, and formerly of Durocher Street, Old Orchard Beach, died Nov. 22, 2002 at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.

He was born on Sept. 1, 1911, in Biddeford, a son of Alfred and Marie-Anne (Lambert) Cantara and attended Biddeford schools.

He was employed for many years as an auto mechanic by several Biddeford and Saco car dealerships retiring in 1973.

He also worked for several years at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

He was a World War II veteran who served during the Normandy Invasion.

He was a lifelong resident of Old Orchard Beach where he and his wife owned and operated a small summer rental business. He enjoyed carpentry and remodeling and always worked on various projects.

He was a communicant of St. Margaret's Church in Old Orchard Beach and a member of the Elks Lodge in Saco.

He was predeceased by sister, Lucienne Andrews in 1952.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Yvonne (Lemieux) Cantara of Saco; one daughter, Nancy Cote of Biddeford; two granddaughters, Nadine and Danielle Cote; and several nieces and nephews.

William Cook, 84

SACO - William George Cook Sr., 84, of Flag Pond Road, died Nov. 18, 2002 at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.

He was born Jan. 19, 1918 in Brookline, Mass., a son of William F. and Mary (Hay) Cook, and graduated from Brookline High School with an athletic scholarship to play football for Boston College.

He was a World War II U.S. Marine Corps veteran.

He owned and operated his own restaurant and sold restaurant equipment throughout Maine.

He was an avid golfer and longtime member of the Biddeford and Saco Country Club.

His granddaughter, Melanie, died previously.

Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Charlotte A. (Hopkins) Cook; three sons, William G. Jr. of Camden, Stephen F. of Westfield, Mass., and Peter H. of Old Orchard Beach; four grandsons; and several nieces and nephews.

Thomas Creswell III, 34

BIDDEFORD - Thomas J. Creswell III, 34, formerly of Scarborough, died Nov. 19, 2002 at his residence on Prospect St.

He was born in Rochester, N.H., Oct. 15, 1968, and was educated in Scarborough and attended Cheverus High School.

For the past seven years, he has worked as an auto mechanic at Rowe Ford in Westbrook.

He recently had received his ASE master certification and was working toward his master mechanic degree.

He was a very proud father of three children and was an avid hunter. He enjoyed auto racing, fishing with his children and loved his Fords and spending time with his family and many friends.

He is survived by his mother, Elaine (Parker) Eldridge of Scarborough and his maternal grandmother, Edna Parker of Scarborough; two sons, Austin and Dylan Creswell, both of Old Orchard Beach; and one daughter, Amber Creswell of South Portland; one sister, Susan Creswell and her partner, Tony Milligan of Rumford; one nephew, Eddie Douglas; one niece, Bethany Gordon, both of Rumford; and his father, Thomas "Pete" Eldridge and his wife, Kathleen of New Orleans; several aunts, uncles, cousins, and many friends.

A funeral services was held Saturday at York Funeral Chapel, Cornish with Pastor Robert Irish officiating.

Hughes Dearlove

BIDDEFORD - Hughes P. Dearlove, formerly of Winterhaven Assisted Living in Saco, died Nov. 18, 2002 at Southridge Living Center.

He was born in Prattsburgh, N.Y., the son of John and Ella (Putnam) Dearlove, graduated from Haverling High School, Manlius Military Academy and Colgate University and earned a master's degree in education from Columbia University.

He married Margarita Herlihy in August 1944 in Schaghticoke, N.Y.

He served for almost 40 years as an educator, primarily in Hillsdale, N.Y., where he was a teacher and principal at Roeliff Jansen Central School and, later, supervising principal of Taconic Hills Central School.

He was a member of the Queensbury Methodist Church (where he was in the choir), many educational, administrative and mental health organizations and the Lions and Kiwanis.

Always active in community affairs, he retired in 1972 to Queensbury, N.Y., where he lived for 25 years and served in church and community volunteer organizations. In 1997, he moved to Winterhaven Assisted Living to be near family.

He enjoyed all sports and had been a senior tennis player. His other interests included gardening, music and current events.

Two sisters, Helen Henderson and Isador Travis, a brother Welborn, and his identical twin, Homer, died previously.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, a resident of Southridge Living Center in Biddeford; two daughters, Margy Gadbois of Westminster, Colo. and Anne Murray of Kennebunk; one son, Albert Divine of Denver, Colo.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Sophie Goodrich, 87

SANFORD - Sophie W. "Mumsy" Goodrich, 87, died Nov. 17, 2002 at Mercy Hospital in Portland.

She was born Aug. 20, 1915 in Worcester, Mass., the daughter of Andrew and Sophie (Lisowski) Bobchick.

She worked for several years at Sanford Woolen Mills and Sprague Electric.

She was one of the first female motorcyclists in the area, riding from 1936 until 1982. She loved the thrill of going to the Laconia, N.H. races. She also enjoyed gardening, cooking, going to the beach, feeding the birds, picking berries, going to local fairs, caring for her cats, dancing, a good polka and her grandchildren.

Surviving are eight sons, Pastor Alan J. of Dover, N.H., John F., Daniel B., Gary G., Wayne L. and Lyndon G., all of Sanford, Ronald D. of Hookset, N.H. and Philip A. of Rochester, N.H.; four daughters, SoSo S. Williams of Sanford, Noella J. Jeeves of Westbrook, Sylvia A. Marquette of Kansas City, Mo., and Ansie S. Stuart of Wells; two sisters, Annie White of Sanford and Helen Foucault of Sunrise, Fla.; 21 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Georgette Martin, 57

BIDDEFORD - Georgette A. Martin, 57, of Congress Street, Portland, and a longtime resident of Biddeford, died Nov. 21, 2002 at Maine Medical Center following a long illness.

She was born in Biddeford on March 24, 1945, a daughter of Emile and Virginia (Cabana) Martin and was educated in Biddeford schools.

She volunteered her time at the Root Cellar in Portland.

She was a member of the Royal Ridge Church of God in Scarborough and enjoyed listening to music.

Surviving are four brothers, Girard Martin of Conover, N.C., Willie Martin of Dearborn, Mich., and George and Paul Martin, both of Biddeford; one sister, Ann Marie Valade of Biddeford; several nieces and nephews.

Charlotte Newton, 75

BIDDEFORD - Charlotte Newton, 75, of King Street, died Nov. 18, 2002 at Southridge Living Center.

She was born in Bangor on May 25, 1927, the daughter of Walter B. and Gertrude (Leland) Robbins, and was educated in Boothbay Harbor schools.

She married James Newton in Portland.

She worked in sardine factories in Boothbay Harbor and Portland.

Surviving are her husband; seven children in Maine and Massachusetts ; and one brother, Gerry Bradley of New Hampshire.

Winfield Phillips, 69

KENNBUNKPORT - Winfield "Bud" Phillips, 69, of Turbats Creek Road, died on Nov., 22 at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.

He was born in Cape Elizabeth on Oct. 10, 1933, a son of Winfield W. and Eva Phillips. He graduated from Ricker College.

He served in the United States Marine Corps. He was employed by the Rhumb Line Motor Lodge in Kennebunkport.

He was a lifetime member of the Boy Scouts and Eagle Scouts. He was very creative and one of his hobbies was model boat building. He enjoyed fishing and was an excellent cook. His top priority, though, was his grandchildren, family, and friends.

He is survived by his mother; one son, Winfield W. Phillips III of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; two daughters, Pam Morrison of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., and Beth Wilkinson of Melbourne, Fla.; three brothers, Thomas Flaherty of Eliot, Charles Phillips of Waterboro, and Raymond Phillips of So. Portland; one sister, Mary Ann Foley of Limerick; five grandchildren, Krystle, Joseph, Nicholas and Clay Phillips all of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. and Giffin Wilkinson of Melbourne, Fla.; and his second family at the Rhumb Line.

A memorial service was held at Monday at Bibber Memorial Chapel. Kennebunk with Rev. Stephen Hastings officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Bud's name may be made to the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, PO Box 1947, Quantico, VA 22134.

Louise Rumery, 91

SACO - Louise O. Rumery, 91, of Ocean Pines, died Nov. 18, 2002 at Evergreen Manor.

She was born in Portland on Sept. .21, 1911, the daughter of Archille and Amanda (Patenaude) Turgeon, and attended Westbrook and Portland schools.

She worked for the S.D. Warren Paper Company for a while. In 1956, she moved to California, and returned to Maine in 1984.

She enjoyed crafts, cake decorating and crossword puzzles.

Her husband, Lawrence Remick Rumery, died in 1988.

Surviving are two sons, Donald of Watertown, N.D. and Brian of Tujunga, Calif.; three daughters, Sandra Amergian of South Portland, Katherine May of Grafton, Mass. and Linda Lew of Biddeford; 14 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Harry Stewart, 92

BIDDEFORD - Harry Gage Stewart, 92, of Fortunes Rock, Biddeford Pool and Strafford, Pa., died Nov. 15, 2002 at Park Shore Retirement Community in Seattle, Wash., where he had lived for the past four years.

He was born Oct. 11, 1910 in Savannah, N.Y., and attended Syracuse University.

In 1941, he married Frances Audrey Ware of Mount Vernon, N.Y. She died in 1991.

He was a senior executive for Aetna Life and Casualty group insurance in Philadelphia, Pa., for 34 years, and was involved in numerous civic and philanthropic activities.

Over the years, he volunteered his time to the National Parents Teachers Association, the Dental Clinic Association, Junior Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club, Tredyffrin Township Municipal Authority and Valley Forge Memorial Chapel. He was instrumental in starting the local Little League and was chairman of the Tennis Committee at Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown, Pa. In Biddeford, he was a volunteer senior officer for CETA, a federal agency that hired and trained welfare recipients for jobs. Family, friends, and associates will remember him for his integrity, loyalty, sportsmanship, civic leadership and sense of humor.

He was a member of Abenaki Club in Biddeford Pool.

Survivors include twin children, Craig Ware Stewart of Edmonds, Wash., and Heather Stewart Reed of Greenwich, Conn.; one sister, Barbara Jones of Kinston, N.C.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
