Joseph Poirier, 85

BIDDEFORD - Joseph V. Poirier, 85, of Harding Street, died Feb. 19, 2003 at Southern Maine Medical Center after a long illness.

He was born in Biddeford on April 28, 1917, a son of George and Rosa (Sylvestre) Poirier, was educated in local schools and graduated from the former St. Louis High School in 1936.

He served with the U.S. Army during World War II and received two Purple Hearts and three Bronze Stars.

On Sept. 24, 1945, he married Violet Ayotte in St. Joseph's Church in Biddeford.

He worked five years with Boston Shoe Store, the Saco Lowell Shops, and for approximately 30 years with the U.S. Postal Service, retiring in 1974.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Church, St. Louis Alumni Association, the American Legion, V.F.W., D.A.V., National Association of Letter Carriers, and A.A.R.P. He was a former member of the Sacred Heart League of St. Joseph's Church where he served as treasurer and also actively participated as a collector and Eucharistic minister. He enjoyed playing golf, camping, local sports, traveling and skiing. He greatly enjoyed family gatherings and spending time with his children.

He was predeceased by six sister, Diana Bertrand, Jeannette Sylvestre, Florence, Gertrude, Sister Martha Poirier, S.C.I.M., and Sister Lorette Poirier, C.D., and by two brothers, George and Leopold.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years; one son, Bernard J. of Portland; three brothers, Paul of Saco, Maurice of Somersworth, N.H., and Norman of Biddeford; three sisters, Evelyn Fleurant of Biddeford, Beatrice (Mrs. Daniel) Reardon and Lucille Duclos, both of Saco; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Winthrop Nickerson, 82

PHOENIX, Ariz. - Winthrop "Nick" T. Nickerson, 82, formerly of Post Road in Wells, died on March 13, 2003 in Phoenix following a brief illness.

He was born on July 1, 1920, in Hulls Cove, a son of George and Lizzie (Stanley) Nickerson. He attended Bar Harbor schools.

He served as a machinist in the Army Air Corps in World War II. During the war he traveled across northern Africa and moved into Italy. Following the war he worked in several positions as a machinist at the Portsmouth Navy Yard and Sylvania. He and his wife, Wheat, ran the family business, Nickerson's 9B Ranch Greenhouse in Wells until their retirement. In later years, they traveled the United States extensively. He most recently lived with his daughter Joyce and her family in Phoenix, Ariz., enjoying the Arizona sunshine throughout the year.

As a lifetime sports fan, he is remembered avidly following the local teams from high school to professional.

He was predeceased by his wife of 59 years, Dorothy "Wheat" Nickerson in March 2002, and an infant daughter Kathleen Ann Nickerson. During his wife's prolonged illness in Kennebunk Nursing Home, he devotedly visited and cared for her daily for several years.

He is survived by two sons, Ronald Nickerson of East Rochester, N.H., and Bernard Nickerson of Wells; one daughter, Joyce Graves of Phoenix, Ariz.; and six grandchildren, Rebecca, Randy, Michelle, and Marc Nickerson and Christina and Aaron Graves.

Graveside services will be held in the spring at Ocean View Cemetery, Wells.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or a charity of one's choice.

Janet Reynolds

WELLS - Janet (Nesin) Reynolds, daughter of Bourcard and Statia, wife of Keith, mother to Robin, Alistair, and Gordon, sister to Peter, Babette, Elizabeth, Noah, Joseph and Gert, cousin to Barbara, aunt to many nieces and nephews and friends to many, died March 13, 2003.

She lived wide. She enjoyed each day to the fullest, choosing to hike, ski, travel, and live the world. She lived in Maine, Utah, Mexico, Scotland and Germany and met many special friends on those journeys.

On a hiking trip in Scotland, she met and chased goats with her future husband Keith. She organized many excellent celebrations for family and friends, her outdoor wedding in Howland was so much fun that the local policeman had to visit. She smiled and laughed freely, finding joy in many situations and people.

She made numerous contributions to the field of education. She taught in the classroom for 23 years, from second through seventh grade, finding her home in middle school. Outside the classroom, she led workshops and consulted with numerous schools and educators throughout the region. In the many places she worked, she also led professional development activities that advanced meaningful learning within the school and district. She especially impacted Shapleigh Middle School in Kittery. She tirelessly advocated for relevant, inclusive education for all students, particularly students with disabilities. In recognition of her contributions, she received an Outstanding Middle Level Educator in 2000. Like her parents, she made her corner of the world a better place.

A service in celebration of her life will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. in the social hall of St. Mary's on 236 Eldridge Rd. in Wells. The family requests that guests, who wish, donate a favorite photo of Janet.

In lieu of flowers, she requested that donations be made to the Gordon Reynolds Trust Fund, c/o Shapleigh Middle School, 43 Stevenson Rd., Kittery, ME 03904.

Spring Interment and graveside memorial will be at the town cemetery in Howland, Maine.

Susan Shields, 86

KENNEBUNK - Susan B. Shields, RN, 86, a resident of Bourne Street, Kennebunk died March 13, 2003 at Kennebunk Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Kennebunk after a brief illness. She was the widow of Frederick H. Shields who died in 1969.

She was born in Beaufort, N.C. Feb 5, 1917, a daughter of Linwood S. and Kathleen (Lewis) Bean. She came to Maine in her youth and graduated from Biddeford High School. She received her Registered Nurse Degree at Hunter College in New York and at University Hospital School of Nursing at Bellevue Hospital in New York City in 1938.

She became employed at the former Webber Hospital in Biddeford and continued on with Southern Maine Medical Center in the Pediatrics Department. She was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Kennebunk. She was a member and very active in the Kennebunk Public Health Program serving that organization for many years which is now called the Southern Maine Health and Homecare Services and an active member and supporter of the American Red Cross, its blood drives and programs. She was a life member or the Bellevue Alumni Association, a member of Madonna Chapter Order of Eastern Star in Kennebunk.

She enjoyed the out of doors and was an active member of the Audubon Society. She especially enjoyed a raging snowstorm with its wind, swirling snow, along with the calm that follows a storm.

She was pre-deceased by her husband and one brother, James E. Bean, who died in 1978.

She is survived by four sons, Frederick H. (Ted) Shields Jr. and his wife Marie, David H. Shields, James H. Shields and his wife Minerva, all of Kennebunk, Christopher O. Shields and his wife Cecile of Greenville; one brother, Harold A. Bean of Norfolk, Va.; 11 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren also survive.

A funeral service was held at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk Wednesday with the Rev. Paul L'Herrou officiating the service. Interment will be in Hope cemetery later in the spring.

Donald Smith, 86

KENNEBUNK - Donald S. Smith, 86, a resident of Western Avenue, Kennebunk, formerly of Portland, well-known attorney and Past Grand Master of Masons of Maine, died peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on March 12, 2003.

He was born on Dec. 25, 1916, the fifth of 10 children of John Gilpatric Smith and Harriet Lena (Whitney) Smith. He attended Saco and Kennebunk schools and graduated from Thornton Academy in Saco in 1934. His father was a former mayor of Saco and active in politics for many years.

In the early '40s, he developed and operated a Cushman's Bakery home delivery route in the Bath and Brunswick area. He then entered the U.S. Army in 1943 and served as a Staff Sargent in the 804th Military Police Battalion. Following the war he entered Portland University Law School and graduated Summa Cum Laude in 1951. He was admitted to the Bar that same year. For several years he was a member and partner of the Portland Law firm of Linnell, Perkins, Thompson, Hinckley & Thaxter. He also taught classes in real estate law at Portland University Law School. He served as president of the Portland Lions Club in 1969-70. He was a former member of the Woodfords Club, the Cumberland Club and the Gorham Country Club.

He was very active in Masonic activities and served as Grandmaster of the Grand Lodge of Maine in 1976 and 1977. He was a member and Past Master of Portland Lodge No. 1, served as District Deputy Grand Master, Grand Senior Deacon, Grand Lecturer, served on several committees including the Grievances and Appeals, the Masonic Education and Lodge service, and was chairman of the Northeast Conference on Masonic Education and Libraries. He received the Josiah Hayden Drummond Medal for Distinguished Masonic Service in 1973. He served as chairman of the Conference of Grand Masters in 1977. He was a Royal Arch Mason served as excellent High Priest, member of the Maine Council serving as Most Excellent President as well as Illustrious Master of the council, a member and knighted in St. Albin Commandry, serving as Eminent Commander and Grand Commander of the Grand Commandry of Maine in 1973. He received the

32o in Maine Consistory A.A.S.R. in 1957 and served as thrice Potent Master of Yates Lodge of Perfection and received his 33o Honorary in 1976. He was a member of Kora Shrine Temple of Lewiston, the Portland and York County Shrine Clubs, served with the Legion of Honor and a former member of Put Stevens Court Royal Order of Jesters. He was a member and past Patron of Iona Chapter Order of the Eastern Star of Portland. He attended Arundel Lodge of Masons and Aurora Chapter OES in Kennebunkport.

After retiring from his law practice in Portland in the late 1970s he spent several years with the Stukas Real Estate in Kennebunk and in assisting his wife Ann in running her bed and breakfast inn, The English Robin. He served on the Kennebunk Zoning Board of Appeals and became active with the Kennebunk and Kennebunkport Lions Club.

He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting with his family and friends, a good round of golf, traveling, and especially family gatherings. He was a student of the English language and its proper usage and did not hesitate to correct grammar or choice of words. He followed national politics, would argue out a position at the drop of a hat. An avid reader, enjoying literature and could recite or write dozens of poems from memory.

He was married to the former Mary Irene (Bernier) Smith who pre-deceased him in 1974. Four brothers, Richard Smith, Robert Smith, John Smith, Norman Smith and one sister Billie (nee Arlene) Smith also predeceased him.

He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Annabelle (Burton Doane) Smith of Kennebunk; one son, Donald W. and his wife, Judith Smith of Lyman; one daughter, Patricia Annaclette Smith of Alfred; one stepson, Howard and his wife, Tatjana Doane and their daughter Christiann, all of Kennebunk; three brothers, Royal and Jean Smith of Kennebunk, Freeland Smith of Kennebunkport and James and Martha Smith of Sweet Home, Oregon; one sister, Francis and Donald Street of Oakland, Calif.; several nieces and nephews also survive; and a special friend, Dorothy Root of Alfred.

An Eastern Star service was held Friday at Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk. A Masonic memorial conducted by the Grand Lodge of Maine was held at the chapel Saturday followed by funeral services with the Rev. David Wigley officiating the service. Interment was in Evergreen Cemetery, Portland.

James Truman, 76

BIDDEFORD POOL - James Truman, 76, prominent businessman and resident of Biddeford Pool and Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., passed away peacefully after a long courageous battle with cancer on March 16, 2003 at York Hospital with family by his side.

He was born in Athens, Greece on Jan. 10, 1927, a son of Peter and Marika (Ifantides) Throumoulos. At the age of 2 he came to the United States and settled in Biddeford with his family. He was educated in Biddeford schools and graduated from Biddeford High School.

He enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served for two years during World War II. He returned home to run the family business, then known as Throumoulos Market. He and his family went on to own and run four successful local businesses: The Lighthouse Motor Inn at Pine Point, Cascade Family Restaurant in Saco, Truman Institutional Foods and Federal Reality Company of Biddeford.

On May 16, 1954, he married Helen Kostis at St. Demetrios Church.

Throughout his life, he was involved in and a member of the BPOE Elks, Ahepa for 50 years and the Masonic Dunlop Lodge for 48 years. Devoted and dedicated to his faith, he was an active member of the St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church of Saco, where he once served as president of the Board of Directors. He was also a member of St. Demetrios Church in Ft. Lauderdale where he has wintered the past 30 years.

With a love of people and places, he and his loving wife traveled extensively throughout the United States and Europe, primarily Greece. When retiring to Ft. Lauderdale, he enjoyed his large circle of friends, golf, tennis, classical music, and the travel exploits of his son Nick.

He was noted for his great memory and story telling for the life and times of all the people he met and also did business with.

Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Helen Truman of Biddeford; two sons, Peter J. and Cathy McInnis Truman of Kennebunk and Nicholas C. Truman of Pine Point, Scarborough; three sisters, Cynthia Mantis of Biddeford, Stella Taliento of Biddeford and Alice Danas of Lowell, Mass.; three brothers, Paul Truman of Saco, Plato Truman of Biddeford, and Theodore Truman of Biddeford; one granddaughter, Alison Truman of Kennebunk; and several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today at Hope Memorial Chapel. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at St. Demetrios Church in Saco. Burial will be in St. Demetrios cemetery in Biddeford.

Arrangements are by Hope Memorial Chapel, 480 Elm St., Biddeford, ME 04005.

If desired, memorial contributions may be made in his name to St. Demetrios Church, 186 Bradley St., Saco, ME 04072.

Patricia Kenny, 64

KENNEBUNK - Patricia A. Kenny, 64, of Kennebunk passed away in her home March 16, 2003 after a nine-month battle with brain cancer.

She was born in 1939 in Waterbury, Conn., on Feb. 25, the daughter of Anna (Kardas) and Joseph Croce.

She graduated from Waterbury Catholic High School in 1957. She married Laurence Kenny Jr., also of Waterbury on April 15,1959. Together they raised four children.

Her love of the shore brought her to Maine where she and her husband purchased the Atlantic Motor Inn in Wells Beach in 1976, which they operated until 1989. She and her husband moved to Kennebunkport in 1984. In 1987 the couple purchased the Sundial Inn on Kennebunk Beach, which they operated until 1999 when they retired.

She and her husband frequently traveled. Her adventurous spirit brought them to the Far East, Australia, Europe, and the Caribbean and throughout the U.S. She loved the beach and would vacation each winter in Puerto Rico with her husband. She enjoyed gardening and helping her son Brian at his farm. She was an accomplished knitter and seamstress and loved creating personal pieces for her family. She collected antiques and frequented auctions throughout New England and Pennsylvania. After her retirement she developed an avid interest in golf and became a member at Willowdale Golf Club in Scarborough, Dutch Elm in Arundel and Bahia Country Club in Rio Grande PR. Her greatest love was her family and spending time with her grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Laurence of Kennebunk; one daughter, Christine Frain and her husband Ted of West Chester, Pa.; her three sons, Laurence III and his wife Bonnie of Rindge, N.H., James and his wife Cheryl of Forest Grove, Ore., and Brian and his wife Terri of Biddeford; five grandchildren, Laurence IV, Kelley, Sydney, Jami, and Morgan; one great-grandson, Teddy V.; one sister, Joan Croce; and 23 nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass will be held today at 11 a.m. at St. Martha Catholic Church, Portland Road, Kennebunk.

Friends may greet her family from 10 to 11 a.m. in the church lobby prior to Mass.

Agnes Dargis, 87

KENNEBUNK - Agnes M. Dargis, 87, resident of Huntington Common, formerly of Fletcher Street, Kennebunk and Ellsworth, died March 17, 2003. She was the widow of Edward Dargis who died in 1985.

She was born in Ellsworth July 13, 1915, the daughter of Ralph and Hazel (Brown) Royal. She was a graduate of Ellsworth High School.

She moved to Kennebunk in 1955 from Hallowell. She is a member of the Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Huntington Common Welcoming Committee and advocate and a president of the Residents Council. She has enjoyed gardening, art work, traveling, dancing to the music of the "Big Band" era in her earlier years, playing bridge at the Senior Center and especially enjoyed her grandchildren.

She is survived by her two sons, Paul R. Dargis and his wife Karen of Kennebunk and Robert E. of Chelsea Mass.; one daughter, Mrs. Carolyn P. Higgins of Kennebunkport; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held today at 11:30 a.m. at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk, with the Rev. Richard Horner at the chapel.

Kathy Faino, 52

SANFORD - Kathy L. (Ballard) Faino, 52, of Sanford passed away on March 15, 2003 at Maine Medical Center following a brief illness.

She was born on July 23, 1950 in Lynn, Mass. Beloved wife of Robert Faino, daughter of Lloyd and Martha Ballard of Middleton, Mass. She is also survived by her three brothers Brian Ballard, Kent Ballard, Brett Ballard of Middleton; one sister, Maureen Haley of Phillips, Maine; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by brothers Kevin and Sean.

She was an avid seamstress and could always be found tending to her gardens and enjoying the companionship of her dogs, Marko and Lucy.

She was also an antiques dealer and was employed by Wells Antiques and BoMar Hall. Previously she was employed by various crafts stores.

Adam Friedman, 35

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. - Funeral services were held at the Levine Chapel in Brookline, Mass., Friday for Adam S. Friedman, who died at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston on March 11, 2003. He was 35 years old and a resident of Framingham, Mass.

He was the beloved husband of Lisa J. (Bott) of Framingham, Mass.; the loving son of Bunny (Smoller) and Gerry Friedman of Ogunquit, formerly of Framingham, Mass. He was the devoted brother of Nancy Friedman of York and Pam Lynch and her husband Tom of Framingham. He was the adored uncle of Samie and Quinn Lynch.

Cantor Jodi Schechtman from Temple Beth Am in Framingham officiated. Burial was in the Framingham-Natick Jewish cemetery in Natick, Mass.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Lank Center of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, 44 Binney St., Boston, MA 02115.
