Joann Teitgen
August 13, 1946 - March 27, 2002
Plainwell

Joann Knickerbocker Teitgen was a talented woman. Her gift of craft making showed through her stuffed animal creations and the talent that flowed from her pen in the creation of the heroine and the main character, Mrs. Knickerbocker in the mystery stories she wrote.

Joann passed away peacefully, after a lengthy illness, at the Kairos Dwelling in Kalamazoo on Wednesday, March 27, 2002, under the loving care of her family and the Kairos staff.

Joann’s life began August 13, 1946 in Kalamazoo, Michigan the daughter of the late Paul and Hazel (Stetler) Knickerbocker. She grew up in Scotts and was a 1964 graduate of Climax-Scotts High School, and received a degree in Business from what is now Davenport College. Joann met Arthur Marsh Teitgen of Manitowoc, Wisconsin while they were both attending a hotel management school in Milwaukee. Their relationship blossomed and they were married June 26, 1971. For many years, they made their home in the Plainwell area, because of its proximity to Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids. Joann was office manager of Flint Ink Corporation for many years; a job she truly enjoyed to the point her co-workers were like a second family. Her mystery writing stemmed from her love of Agatha Christie novels and her life long curiosity of the paranormal. Joann was creative in the making of arts and crafts, including macramé and crocheting.

Her family remembers her enjoyment of feeding and watching the birds, and have fond memories of enormous vegetable gardens that helped carry the family through times when employment was sporadic. One of the special times for the family was their vacation out west and because of a car breakdown in Sheridan, Wyoming, they spent an afternoon riding horses. At one point Art fell off his horse and Joann asked with concern, “Is the horse okay?” She never lived down that comment as Art had to use a cane for a month, but the horse was fine. Joann was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Plainwell; member of the Plainwell Walter Miller Post #250 American Legion Auxiliary and the Lucinda Hinsdale Stone Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Among her hobbies, she particularly enjoyed genealogical research and writing mystery stories. Joann was also an accomplished scuba diver and a loyal NASCAR fan; her favorite driver being A.J. Foyt.

Her family includes her husband, Art, a sister, June Weller of Kalamazoo, a brother and sister in law, Paul and Louise Knickerbocker of Bellmead, Texas, a son, Terry Allan Teitgen of Kinross, Michigan; a son and daughter in law, Paul Arthur and Kumiko (Ito) Teitgen of Bellville, Michigan; daughters, Marie Louise Teitgen and Julianna Teitgen of Plainwell; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
