Albert C. Ahrens

Clinton

Albert C. Ahrens, age 76 of Clinton, was called to his eternal rest peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2005.

Albert was born May 25, 1929 in Clinton and was preceded in death by his parents Clarence and Adeline Ahrens. On July 25, 1953, he married Barbara Marion and she preceded him in death in May 1997. Four children survive, Carol (Brad) Brown of Saline, Roger (Cheryl) Ahrens of Clinton, Jeff (Lisa) Ahrens of Clinton and Brad (Kim) Ahrens of Saline. Albert enjoyed spending time with his six grandsons: Jason, Joshua, Creed, Alex, Carter and Ridge. He is also survived by his sister, Betty Fox; a brother-in-law, David (Dorothy) Marion of Clinton; a brother-in-law, Francis (Margaret) Heckaman of Manchester; and several nieces and nephews.

Albert retired from Double A Products in Manchester after 37 years. He also was a lifelong farmer in Clinton. Albert served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Saline American Legion Post 322, and the Tri-County Sportsman's League in Saline.

Besides his parents and loving wife, his sister Lois Heckaman preceded him in death.

The funeral service was held Dec. 17 at the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church with Pastor Mark Smith and Pastor William Natsis officiating. Burial took place at Lodi Township cemetery.

William W. Heffelbower

Howell

William W. "Bill" Heffelbower, age 79, of Howell passed away Dec. 14, 2005.

William was the beloved husband of Ilene and loving father of Sharon (Joe) Gaffka of Howell, Steve (Pamela) Heffelbower of Saline, and Roger (Darlene) Heffelbower of Saline. He had 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. William is survived by his sister, Genny (the late Arthur) Toop; brothers, Donald (Sonja) Heffelbower, Lee (Dottie) Heffelbower; sister-in-law, Lorna Heffelbower and many loving nieces, nephews and good friends.

William was preceded in death by his sister, Audrey (the late Roy) Parks; and brothers, Melvin Heffelbower, Henry Heffelbower; and sister-in-law, Vera Heffelbower.

The funeral was held Monday, Dec. 19 at Highland United Methodist Church, 680 Livingston Rd., Highland. The Rev. James Kummer officiated. Burial took place at Highland cemetery.

Arnold William Wild

Saline

Arnold William Wild, age 91, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, Dec. 22, 2005 at the Saline Evangelical Home surrounded by his family. Arnold was born Nov. 23, 1914 in Lodi Township Mich. to Edward and Rubena (Luckhardt) Wild. On Oct. 8, 1940 he married Lois Huntley and she preceded him in death on July 9, 1990. They were blessed with five children: Donald (Harriet) of Ann Arbor, Terry (Denice) of Jackson, Carolyn (David) Raleigh of Saline, Robert (Barbara) of Saline, and William Arnold.

He has 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Arnold is survived by two brothers, Alwin (Delores) of Fowlerville, and Harold of Ann Arbor and a sister, Leona Struble of Lewiston; and many nieces and nephews. His son, William Arnold, preceded him in death in addition to his wife Lois, four brothers Erwin, Edwin, Paul and Walter. Arnold lived his entire life in the Saline area. He was a farmer and also worked as a carpenter with his brother Edwin for many years. Arnold served as Saline Township treasurer for 26 years. He was an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Bridgewater Mich. where he served his Lord faithfully on numerous boards and committees and with numerous acts of service to the church and church family. Funeral Services were held Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2005 at 11 a.m. at the St. John's Lutheran Church in Bridgewater. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the St. John's Lutheran Church or to the Saline Evangelical Home.

LAUREN GALL

Britton

Lauren E. Gall, 77, of Britton died July 24, 2007, at Herrick Medical Center. He was born Aug. 13, 1929, in Saline the son of Edwin A. and Nellie (Mohrardt) Gall. On Jan. 11, 1950, he was united in marriage with Marie McWilliams, and she survives.

Mr. Gall retired from Tecumseh Products in the early 1990s after many years of devoted service. He spent many years working on the family farm and enjoyed fishing, hunting, trapping and gardening. He also enjoyed playing games, particularly winning, and spending time with his family and friends. He also had a great love for his cats.

In addition to his wife, Marie, Mr. Gall is survived by two sons, Tim Gall of Britton and Byron (Jean) Gall of Tecumseh; one daughter, Kim Gall of Grand Rapids; one sister, Evelyn Auten of Tecumseh; two grandchildren, Joanna and James Gall; in-laws, Alice (Vernon) Pratt, LaRue McWilliams, Ben (Pat) McWilliams; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Virginia Hunter.

A funeral was held Saturday at Britton Bethel Baptist Church. The Rev. Bob Wright officiated. Interment was at Ridgeway cemetery.

Visitation was held Friday at the Tecumseh Chapel of Handler Funeral Homes and Saturday at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to Britton Bethel Baptist Church.

MAX E. ADLER

Saline

Max E. Adler, 72, of Saline died peacefully Feb. 27, 2007, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor. He was born Oct. 29, 1934, to the late Frank T. and Eileen (Lutt) Adler in South Haven.

Mr. Adler was raised in the town of Bangor, and graduated from Bangor High School in 1952. He attended Western Michigan University and transferred to the University of Michigan, where he earned a bachelor's degree in 1957. In 1959, he added a master's degree in wildlife management from the University of Michigan. During this time, Mr. Adler was employed by the Michigan Scientific Co. in Ann Arbor, where he met his wife, Wanda (Guenther) Adler, of 23 years.

In 1965, Mr. Adler began his teaching career at Eastern Michigan University and moved to Saline. He taught various biology courses at Eastern Michigan University and was the curator of the school's greenhouse for more than 32 years. During this same time, he taught adult education courses at Hidden Lake Gardens. Those classes included edible wild plants, bird walks, terrarium workshops and winter wildflowers.

Mr. Adler volunteered as a member of Saline's Beautification Commission from 1975 to 1976 and was considered Saline's City Forester for more than 10 years during the '70s and '80s. He was instrumental in the development of the trail systems of both Curtiss Park and Wilderness Park and assisted in the development of leaflets that outlined the trails of each.

Mr. Adler frequently volunteered his time to various Girl Scout troops and elementary school classes to guide young people through the Saline parks and other landscapes of interest. For the past several years, he had been an active member and officer of the Saulk Trail Audubon Society, a group that shared his passion for nature.

In appreciation for his years of service to the Saline park system and the citizens of Saline, a trail in Curtiss Park was named The Max Adler Trail, as proclaimed by the mayor and Saline City Council April 29, 2005.

Mr. Adler was an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Bridgewater Township. Throughout the past 30-plus years, he volunteered as a Sunday school teacher and served on church council as the congregational treasurer.

Mr. Adler is survived by his daughter, Amanda Hart (Gary Jordan) and son Mark E. Adler. He also leaves behind four grandchildren, Jimmy Hart, Joe Hart, Mark B. Adler and Alyssa Hart, who were his pride and joy.

Additionally, he is survived by a brother, Robert C. Adler, as well as several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service is planned for 1 p.m. Saturday at St. John's Lutheran Church. The Rev. Kathleen Meyers will officiate.

Visitation with the family will be held 11 a.m. until the time of service at St. John's Lutheran Church.

Memorial contributions can be made to St. John's Lutheran Church's Memorial Fund.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Robison-Bahnmiller Funeral Home in Saline.

ARNOLD JAMES BLACK

Lake Columbia, Brooklyn

Arnold James "Arnie" Black, 59, died May 20, 2007, at his home. He was born Aug. 30, 1947, in Ypsilanti to James H. and Madeline Black. On April 24, 1970, he married Jane A. Rybarsyk at St. Francis Church in Ann Arbor.

Mr. Black worked as a carpenter, and was a member of Dixboro United Methodist Church and St. Andrew Catholic Church. He lived in Saline for more than 30 years and was an avid fan of Saline High School volleyball, where his daughters played, and remained a fan after they graduated and played at Eastern Michigan University.

Surviving are his wife, Jane; daughters, Nicole Black, Angela (Dewey) Scott and Danielle (Dane) Dresch; grandchildren, Jordan and Jared Scott, and Brady Dresch; and brothers, Steve and Roger Black.

A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at Muehlig Funeral Chapel, 403 S. Fourth Ave., in Ann Arbor. Doyle Garrett will officiate.

The family received friends at the funeral from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Memorial contributions may be directed to "Arnie's Army", American Cancer Society Relay for Life, Dexter.

FLORENCE E. GOODELL
Mayville

Florence E. Goodell, 100, of Mayville, a beloved mother, nana, sister, aunt and dear friend, died May 24, 2007, in Midland at home with her family.

Mrs. Goodell was born Sept. 5, 1906, in Mayville to Frank and Gertrude (Lane) Sherk. She was a retired school teacher with 33 years service in the Vassar and Mayville schools.

Mrs. Goodell was a member of the Order of the Easter Star, Mayville Bridge Club and Mayville United Methodist Women. She loved needlepoint, rug weaving, ceramics, crossword puzzles, cribbage, and especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She is survived two daughters, Janet (Lowell)Thomas of Midland and Nancy (John) Miett of Boyne City; two sisters, Grace Aumack of Mayville and Phyllis Moss of Mayville; two grandchildren, Stephen (Pauline) Thomas and Lori Jo Upleger; four great-grandchildren, Adam Upleger, Andrew Upleger, Chad (Raeann) Ramsby and Aaron Ramsby; two great-great-grandchildren, Charity Ramsby and Tyler Ramsby.

She was preceded in death by husbands Vere Morrison in 1956 and Olaf Goodell in 1975, and one brother, Dafoe Sherk.

A funeral was held Monday at the Mayville United Methodist Church. The Revs. John Ball and Robert Jones officiated. Interment was at Rich Township cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Mid-Michigan Hospice, American Heart Association, Mayville Library or Mayville United Methodist Church.

ARNOLD JAMES BLACK
Lake Columbia, Brooklyn

IRENE ESCHELBACH
Saline

Irene Eschelbach, 89, of Saline died May 25, 2007, at the Evangelical Home in Saline. She was born July 24, 1917, in Scio Township the daughter of Theophil and Clara (Staebler) Strieter.

She married Ray Eschelbach June 15, 1939, and he preceded her in death March 2000. She worked for The Ann Arbor News and Braun and Brumfield. She was a lifelong member of Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Survivors include her sons, Glenn (Carolyn) Eschelbach of Saline and Garry (Chris) Eschelbach of Georgia; four grandchildren, Randy (Ann) Eschelbach, Rodney (Carrie) Eschelbach, Kimberly (Clint) Underwood and Matthew (Christin) Eschelbach; her great-grandchildren, Thomas, Ryan and Megan Eschelbach and Andelyn and Addesyn Underwood; and her sister-in-law, Carolyn Strieter.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Nelson and Arwin Strieter; and her sister-in-law, Olive Schmidt.

Visitation was held Monday at Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church. A funeral was held Tuesday. The Rev. Douglas Hartley officiated. Burial was at Bethlehem cemetery in Ann Arbor.

Memorial contributions may be made to the church.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Robison-Bahnmiller Funeral Home in Saline.
