S. ANNE BUMPUS

Gregory

S. Anne Bumpus, 86, of Gregory died Nov. 1, 2005, at the Chelsea Retirement Community. She was born Feb. 11, 1919, in Gregory the daughter of the late Milo and Mable (Caskey) Isham.

Mrs. Bumpus had lived in the area all her life and was member of St. Cornelius and Cyprian Catholic Church. She was very active with the Christmas parties and funeral luncheons at the church.

Mrs. Bumpus enjoyed collecting antique glass and was a member of the Heisey Glass Club.

On July 5, 1941, she married Merwin "Brownie" Bumpus, and he preceded her in death Oct. 23, 1988.

Mrs. Bumpus worked for Rockwell International in Chelsea for 30 years.

Surviving are five nephews, Sid (Pat) Smith of Sparta, Gary (Annette) Smith of Winter Haven, Fla., Charles (Joan) Bumpus of Stockbridge, Robert (Janet) Bumpus of Wausau, Wis., and Jerry (Laura) Bumpus of Mason; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Mrs. Bumpus is also survived by special friends Joe and Vicki Gladstone of Gregory, and Lena Duer of Chelsea.

She was preceded in death by one nephew, Thomas Bumpus.

A memorial service was held Tuesday at St. Cornelius and Cyprian Catholic Church in Bunker Hill. The Rev. Michael Petroski officiated.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Cornelius and Cyprian Catholic Church or Stockbridge Annual Thanksgiving Dinner.

Burial was at the Plainfield cemetery in Unadilla Township.

Arrangements were by Caskey-Mitchell Funeral Home in Stockbridge.

GARY ERSKINE

Chelsea

Gary Erskine, 65, of Chelsea died Nov. 3, 2005, surrounded by his loving family. He was born Oct. 8, 1940, in Ann Arbor to Clayton Jack Erskine and Geneva Edick Erskine.

Mr. Erskine retired from the Washtenaw County Road Commission's Chelsea yard. He also served in the U.S. Army in the Vietnam War, and was a member of the V.F.W.

Mr. Erskine married Mary (Anitra) French July 23, 1966, and she survives. Also surviving are three children, David (Marcia) Erskine of Gregory, Shari (Tim) Shaw of Gregory and John Erskine of Chelsea; his mother, Geneva Erskine of Moran; four grandchildren, Misty, Valley, Brittany and Melody; one brother; five sisters; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father, one brother and a nephew.

A memorial service was held Saturday at the Faith In Action Building in Chelsea. The Rev. Sarah Groesser officiated.

He will be laid to rest with his father in Brevort Township cemetery in Moran.

Memorial contributions may be made to his family.

Arrangements were by Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home.

LEANNE K. CHAKA

Chelsea

Leanne K. Chaka, 63, of Chelsea died Nov. 5, 2005, at the Arbor Hospice Residence in Ann Arbor. She was born Jan. 27, 1942, in Flint the daughter of Wilbur and Elizabeth (Trenamen) Swartz.

Mrs. Chaka had lived in the area for the past 16 years and was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Dexter. She was a business administrator for Mechanical Dynamistic Inc. in Ann Arbor, retiring in 1997.

On July 24, 1965, she married Ronald James Chaka in Flint, and he survives. Also surviving are her parents of Owosso; three children, Michael Chaka of Chelsea, Diane (John) Watt of Ann Arbor and Christopher (Michelle) Chaka of Whitmore Lake; two brothers, Robert Swartz of Springfield, Ill., and Gary (Diane) Swartz of Owosso; two sisters, Debra (Bud) Caswell and Laurie (Ed) Quirk, all of Owosso; and three grandchildren, Payton and Ryan Watt and Abbigail Chaka.

Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Dexter. The Rev. Brendan Walsh officiated. Burial was at North Lake cemetery in Dexter Township.

Memorial contributions may be made to Stairway to the Future Campaign in care of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Funeral arrangements were by Staffan-Mitchell Funeral in Chelsea.

RICHARD J. "DICK" WILLIAMS

Prescott

Formerly of Dexter

Richard J. "Dick" Williams, 79, of Prescott, formerly of Dexter, died Oct. 15, 2005, after a brief illness. He was born Nov. 23, 1925, the son of John and Mary Williams.

Mr. Williams had three siblings.

He was proceeded in death by his parents; sister, Ina; wife, Elberta; and wife, Florence.

Mr. Williams never had any children, but certainly loved his dogs, his family said.

He retired from Sweepster and still enjoyed the annual holiday party. He spent several years after retirement working at Mugg & Bopps convenience store in Dexter, just to visit with the community, until he moved to Prescott in 1998.

Mr. Williams enjoyed photography and antiquing.

A graveside service will be held noon Saturday at the Plainfield cemetery in Plainfield.

Arrangements were by Hosmer-Muehlig Funeral Chapel in Dexter.

DONALD A. HAYWOOD

Chelsea

Donald A. Haywood, 64, died peacefully Nov. 3, 2005, at Chelsea Community Hospital. He was born March 29, 1941, in Taylorville, Ill. His family moved to Flint in 1955 and he graduated from Flint Northern in 1959.

In 1962, the family moved to Ypsilanti, where he worked at Fisher Body in Willow Run until 1967.

On Oct. 19, 1963, Mr. Haywood married his beloved Kathleen. They had one daughter, who was born in 1970.

In 1963, Mr. Haywood joined the National Guard and was part of the Radio Communications Division. His unit was called to Detroit for the 1967 riots and again in 1968 after Martin Luther King died. He received an honorable discharge in 1969.

In April 1967, Mr. Haywood was hired into the Ann Arbor Fire Department as a firefighter. Throughout his years, he was an emergency medical technician, instructor of EMTs, member of the rescue squad, and driver/operator of a rescue squad and Engine 1. He retired from the department in 1995 after 28 years of dedicated service.

Mr. Haywood provided lots of laughter with his convoluted sense of humor. Those who knew him will miss his beautiful smiles and hugs.

Mr. Haywood loved his job as much as he loved his family. The brotherhood of firefighters was wonderful to him. There is a special bond between firefighters that many will never understand, his family said.

His family would like to thank everyone for their continued love and support. "Just remember Don as your friend and brother. He loved all of you, " the family said.

Mr. Haywood was preceded in death by his parents, Ann (Busby) and Bill Haywood.

He is survived by his brothers, Gary (Pauline) and Ron (Mary); his wife, Kathy (nee Collica); daughter, Erin (Jared) Throneberry; and one grandson, Alex Throneberry.

Also surviving is his faithful Welsh Corgi, Darby, and his special friend, Kathy Summersgill, and countless nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, brotherhood of firefighters and many friends.

A service was held Wednesday and a private burial took place at Oak Grove cemetery in Chelsea. Arrangements were by Muehlig's Funeral Home in Ann Arbor.

Memorial contributions may be made to Ann Arbor Firefighters Honor Guard or the American Diabetes Association.

ROLLAND "ROLLY" SPAULDING

Chelsea

Rolland W. "Rolly" Spaulding, 85, of Chelsea died Nov. 7, 2005, at his home surrounded by his family. He was born June 11, 1920, in Chelsea the son of Harold "Pappy" and Marie (Whitmer) Spaulding.

Mr. Spaulding graduated from Chelsea High School in 1938. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army 125th Evacuation Hospital Unit. He was discharged as a first sergeant.

Returning home from the service, he joined his father and became partners in Spaulding Chevrolet, eventually becoming sole owner. After selling the business in 1972, he joined Frank Groh's Chevrolet in Dexter as general manager until his retirement in 1982. A career highlight was selling cars to three generations of Washtenaw County residents.

Mr. Spaulding was a charter member of the Chelsea Rod and Gun Club. He spent 35 years on the Boy Scouts of America Executive Board, serving as council commissioner, council president, from 1970 to 1971, and popcorn chairman, overseeing fund-raising for council activities.

Mr. Spaulding also had received Scouting's highest award, the Silver Beaver, for his years of service.

He was also active on the Chelsea Fair Board, helped establish Veterans Park in Chelsea and served as chairman of Chelsea's 125th anniversary celebration in 1959.

On Oct. 30, 1944, he married Gretchen M. Burg in Paris, Texas, and she preceded him in death Jan. 18, 2002.

Surviving are six children, Jeffrey H. (Andrea) Spaulding of Bethesda, Md., Lee S. (Art) Tremper of Chelsea, Daniel J. Spaulding of Chelsea, Shawn M. Spaulding of Chelsea, Jon W. Spaulding of Munith and William M. (Michele) Spaulding of Chelsea; 14 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two nephews, Mike (Sandy) McClear and Jack McClear; one grand-nephew; and one grand-niece.

He was also preceded in death by his sister, Virginia McClear, and a granddaughter, Abigail Marie Uphaus.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home in Chelsea.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. tomorrow at the funeral home. Deacon Timothy Renaud will officiate. Burial will take place at Vermont cemetery in Chelsea.

Memorial contributions may be made to Spaulding for Children, Chelsea Rod and Gun Club, Hospice of Michigan or Boy Scouts of America Great Sauk Trail Council.

ESAU JARVIS

Prestonsburg, Ky.

Formerly of Ypsilanti and Chelsea

Esau Jarvis, 73, born in Buffalo, Ky., formerly of Ypsilanti and Chelsea, died suddenly at his home in Prestonsburg, Ky.

He was married to Betty Lea Elkins-Jarvis for 49 years.

Mr. Jarvis retired after 37 years at Ford Motor Co.'s Ypsilanti plant.

He is survived by two daughters, Charlene Walz and Darlene (Tom) Palka; and three grandchildren, Stephanie (Mark) Donahue, Steven (Amanda) Walz and Nicole Walz.

Also surviving is one step-grandchild, Brittany Palka, and two great-grandchildren, Brianna Donahue and Austin Buchanan.

Services will be held through Friday at Nelson Frazier Funeral Home, 7 Clinic Drive, Martin, KY 41649.

ERIC JOHNSON

Dexter

Eric Johnson, 61, of Dexter died suddenly Oct. 28, 2005. He was born April 19, 1944, to Ermin "Red" and Nona (LaParl) Johnson in Lansing.

Mr. Johnson served in the U.S. Army from 1961 to 1964. He graduated with a bachelor's degree from Michigan State University in 1971 and received a master's degree in business administration from Cranfield Institute of Technology in Cranfield, England, in 1974.

Mr. Johnson was united in marriage to Cindy Kay Sept. 22, 1972. They had been residents of Dexter since 1976.

Mr. Johnson worked for many years in marketing. He was most recently employed at Hackney Hardware in Dexter.

Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Cindy; children, Marissa and Dane of whom he was so very proud; brothers, Brian (Gail) Johnson and Craig Johnson; sister, Carole Swain; brothers-in-law, Michael Kay and Robert (Susan) Kay; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Hosmer-Muehlig Funeral Chapel in Dexter. A scripture service will be held at 7:30 p.m.

A funeral will be held 11 a.m. tomorrow at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Visitation is from 10 a.m. until the time of service. The Rev. Brendan Walsh will officiate.

Memorial contributions may be made to an educational fund for Mr. Johnson's children or St. Joseph Church Stairway to the Future Campaign.

SUSAN (FAHRNER) KIMBER

Formerly of Chelsea

Susan (Fahrner) Kimber, 46, formerly of Chelsea, died Sept. 18, 2005.

Mrs. Kimber is survived by her precious daughters, Casey and Clancy Kimber and Corrin Kovath; her parents, Norm (Billy) Fahrner and Arlene (Richard) Gilloz; loving sisters, Marie (Bill) Chambers, Jody (Charles) Drainville and Cristy (Ernie) Kovath; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Arnold and Bernice Fahrner, and George and Violet Paxton; a special great-aunt, Fran Squires; brother-in-law, Brian Kovath; and an aunt, Lynne Fahrner.

"Though she danced to a different drummer, God's angels played the music, " her family said. "She was loved by family and friends, and is at peace with God in his heaven."

Cremation has taken place.
