Mickey Schroeder

Iron Mountain - Helen J. "Mickey" Schroeder, 87, of Iron Mountain, died Weds. June 27, 2007 at Columbia-St. Mary's Hospital in Milwaukee. She was born on May 26, 1920 in Manitowoc, WI, the daughter of the late Arthur and Freda (Zebour) Anderson.

Mickey graduated from the University of Michigan Dental Hygiene program and worked as a dental hygienist for Dr. G.G. Jacobs.

Mickey was a very active member of the community. She belonged to St. Mary and St. Joseph Catholic Church and one of its flower fairies. She was a life member of the Tuesday Study Club and a member and past president of the Iron Mountain-Kingsford G.F.W.C. Mickey also belonged to Pine Grove Country Club and the Chippewa Club.

Mickey was very instrumental in getting mental health care established in the Upper Peninsula. She was a charter member of the Dickinson County Mental Health Association.

Mickey enjoyed spending time at her cottage in Spread Eagle for the past 52 years. She also enjoyed swimming at the Crystal Lake Community Center and was recognized for swimming greater than one hundred miles. She had a passion gardening and making crafts, especially wreaths. Mickey volunteered for the American Cancer Society and the hospital league. Through the years, she raised many German Schnauzers and each one was named 'Fritz'.

She married Dr. John Schroeder on July 24, 1944 in Milwaukee, WI. He preceded her in death on Dec. 6, 1991.

Mickey is survived by one son Patrick J. (Betty) Schroeder of Whitefish Bay, WI, two daughters Mary Beth "Buffy" Stern of Bonney Lake, WA and Katie (James) Johnson of Glendale, WI, one brother Dr. David (Joan) Anderson of Ann Arbor, MI, nine grandchildren Patrick M. Schroeder, Thomas Schroeder, Elsbeth Cockcroft, Margaret Chambers, Boyd Stern, Stephanie Stern, Michael Johnson, Christopher Johnson, and John Schroeder, one great granddaughter Madeline Cockcroft, and a daughter-in-law, Jean Schroeder of Whitefish Bay, WI.

She was preceded in death by two sons Thomas and Michael Schroeder, one brother Dr. Arthur Anderson, and one granddaughter Katie Schroeder.

Visitation will be tonight from 5-8pm at Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Sat. at 9am at St. Mary and St. Joseph Catholic Church. Father Paul Nomellini will offer the Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will be in cemetery Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Carmelite Monastery.

The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home with arrangements.

Jeffery L. Besaw

FLORENCE, Wis. - Jeffery L. Besaw, 43, of Florence, died Monday, June 25, 2007, at his home.

He was born on Jan. 19, 1964, in Norway, and has been a resident of Florence for most of his life. Jeff had worked for Steber Potato Farms and most recently at the Pasty Oven in Florence. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, animals and was an avid reader.

He is survived by his mother, Connie Besaw of Florence; three brothers, Dan (Mary) Besaw of Florence, Russ Besaw of Gillette, Wis. and Jim Besaw of Trenton, N.J.; a sister, Evelyn Brown of Delavan, Wis.; a niece and nephew, Mike and Bonnie Short of Florence and many special friends including his best friend Dufas (his dog).

Jeff was preceded in death by his father, Merrill Besaw and a nephew, Chaz Pounds.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Friday at First Presbyterian Church in Florence.

Memorial services will follow at 11 a.m. Friday at the church. Rev Doug Johnson will officiate.

Margaret S. Guild

Iron Mountain - Margaret S. Guild, 100, of Iron Mountain, passed away Fri. June 22, 2007 at Freeman Nursing and Rehabilitation Community in Kingsford.

She was born July 14, 1906 in Arbor Vitae, Wisc., the daughter of the late Amund and Ida (Lund) Severson. Margaret graduated from Park Falls High School in 1924. She attended the former Whitewater State Normal School - now the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater - where she received her teaching certificate after two years of study. She taught first grade for two years at the Chapin School on the north side of Iron Mountain until her marriage to Bruce Guild in 1928. After raising her family, Margaret continued her education and returned to teaching. She completed her bachelor's degree at Northern Michigan University in 1962 and taught first grade at the Garden Village School in Kingsford until her retirement in 1971.

Margaret was an avid bridge player. She enjoyed entertaining her several bridge clubs and various circles of friends. She enjoyed cooking and caring for her home and did so competently into her 98th year. Margaret was well known for her baking and regularly delivered homemade cookies to friends in nursing homes. She was skilled at needlework, including embroidery, tatting, crocheting, and quilting. For many years, she knit baby sweaters as a volunteer for the Dickinson County Hospital gift shop. She enjoyed traveling, especially to Hawaii and to Europe. Margaret remained physically active after retirement. She took up golf in her late sixties and enjoyed playing for many years. She also took long daily walks well into her nineties.

Margaret was proud of her seven-decade association with P.E.O. as a charter member of Chapter AN. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church where she was long active in her circle. Margaret was a member of the Iron Mountain Kingsford General Federation Women's Club for over fifty years. She was active in the Girl Scouts as a leader and as a council member. She was a former member of the American Association of University Women, the Dickinson County Teachers Association, Pine Grove Country Club and the Chippewa Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bruce, a former superintendent of the Iron Mountain Public Schools; her son, William; her brother Sanger Severson; and her sisters Alice Severson and Angeline Krueger.

Margaret is survived by her daughter, Mary Beth Guild of Iron Mountain, and a grandson, Joshua Guild, of Princeton, NJ. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews and many grand-nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Weds. from 9:30-11:30am at Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 12 noon on Weds. at Trinity United Methodist Church. Rev. David Anderson will officiate. Burial will be in cemetery Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Bruce and Margaret Guild Memorial Scholarship at Iron Mountain High School, in care of the scholarship administrator.

Albert A. Bock

AURORA, Wis. - Albert A. Bock, 65, of Aurora, died unexpectedly Saturday, June 16, 2007, at the VA Medical Center in Iron Mountain.

He was born Oct. 21, 1941, in Evanston, Ill., son of the late Albert and Margaret (Peterson) Bock. Al moved to Aurora in 1945 with his parents, and has been a lifelong resident of the area. He graduated from Kingsford High School in 1959. He served in the U. S. Army from 1964-1966.

He was a member of the Uren-Cooper-Johnson American Legion Post 50, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Men's Auxiliary Post 3674, and the Teamsters Union.

Al retired from the Florence County Highway Department and also served as an emergency fire warden for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources for more than 25 years.

Al loved to sing and was a member of the Northernaires. He loved to play his piano-accordion and his squeeze box. He was also a talented artist and designed and painted many wooden cutouts, which he called his creatures.

He is survived by his wife Betty; his children; Paul (Valerie) Bock of Elk River, Minn. and their children, Katie and Kenny; Eileen (Joe) Weslock of Howe, Ind. and their children, Cory, Renee, Brock, Brandon, and Brian; Bill (Cherish) Nelson of Niagara, Wis. and their children, Samantha, and Sarah Jean; Rena (Rod) Nelson of Niagara and their children, Ashley, Adam (Nickie), Jesse (Troy), Jamie and Barb; Mark (Lisa) Vorass of Jacksonville, Fla. and their children, Bryson and Tanner; and Jim Vorass of Bloomington, Ill. and his children, Kesha and Ben.

He is also survived by one brother, Bob (Lee) Bock of Pulaski, Wis. and their children, Andy (Ann) Bock, Jeb Bock, and Mike (Kristie) Bock and their son Brady; one aunt, Nancy (Bob) Norris of Aurora; and many cousins.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with Pastor Brad Moore officiating.

Burial will be in the Homestead-Aurora cemetery. Full military honors will follow the committal service at the cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Jeb, Andy, and Mike Bock, Mike, Brandon, and Kyle Youngs.

The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain with the funeral arrangements.

Edward A. Larson

KINGSFORD - Edward A. Larson, 96, of 1820 Mary's Way, Kingsford, died Friday, June 15, 2007, at his home.

He was born July 5, 1910, in Menominee, son of the late Olaf and Anna Larson.

Ed graduated from Felch High School in 1928. After graduating, he worked in Felch farming and logging for about 12 years. Ed was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

He married Ellen Peterson on Sept. 7, 1940. She preceded him in death on June 5, 2000. They lived in Evanston, Ill. for almost 40 years where Ed worked for Nabisco until retiring and returning to the area in 1975.

Ed was a member of the First Covenant Church where he did maintenance work voluntarily for many years. He was a very family oriented man and will be missed.

Ed is survived by his son, Dennis (Michelle) Larson of Hoschton, Ga.; a sister, Marian Ecklund of Lindsborg, Kan.; two grandsons, Brian (Elizabeth) Larson of Decatur, Ga. and Eric (Heather) Larson of Atlanta, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Lawrence, Bob and Herbert Larson and an infant sister, Arneda Larson.

Visitation was held today from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at First Covenant Church in Iron Mountain.

Funeral services followed at 11 a.m. today at the church.

Burial was in the Foster City cemetery.

Charles John Nelson

KINGSFORD - Charles John Nelson, 92, of Kingsford, died Tuesday, June 12, 2007, at Freeman Nursing and Rehabilitation Community in Kingsford.

He was born Aug. 1, 1914, in Atlantic Mine, son of the late John and Signe (Westerberg) Nelson. Charles graduated from Michigan Technological University with a bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering.

He married Patricia Ryan in 1945.

Charles and his brother, Evan started the Nelson Paint Co. in 1940. When World War II intervened, raw materials for paint were hard to come by, so he held positions with Kimberly-Clark, Ford and Allied Aviation working with the U.S. Navy and Air Force glider systems. After the war, he went back to Nelson Paint. At Nelson Paint, they made a general line of paints and industrial finishes.

After requests from the forest industry for better paints and applicators, they began producing such products as pre-marking paint and equipment. In response to the need to mark trees from a distance, Nelson Paint developed the paintball and paintball gun, using carbon dioxide for propulsion. This technology later expanded for use in the cattle industry and more recently for competitive paintball games.

Charles was a past director of the Commercial National Bank, past president of the Chamber of Commerce, past president of the Chippewa Club, past president of the Interstate Shrine Club and a lifelong member of the Masonic Lodge. He was also a recipient of the Michigan Tech Board of Control Silver Medal.

He leaves his wife, Patricia; one sister, Mae Waisanen of Racine, Wis. and family; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Geraldine and Edward Collette of Niagara, Wis.; son, Michael and family; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Dennis and Mary Ryan of Kingsford and family; sister-in-law, Carol Skogman of Beaver Dam, Wis. and family; special niece, June Waisanen of Kingsford; and many other nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Sigruid Tapani, a brother, Evan Nelson and a niece, Barbara Louys.

The Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain will be handling private arrangements.

Donald R. Cooper Sr.

BATTLE CREEK - Former Iron Mountain resident, Donald R. Cooper Sr. passed away on Saturday, June 9, 2007, at Good Samaritan Hospice Residence in Battle Creek, Mich.

He is the father of Donald R Cooper Jr. of Battle Creek and Diane M. Ponzio of Alpharetta, Ga. His wife, Rosemary Massie preceded him in death.

He has one surviving sister, Evelyn Stebbins of Marquette. He is survived by his children; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, his sister and several nieces and nephews

Donald was born in Iron Mountain on Nov. 26, 1928. He was the son of Andrew and Florence Cooper of Kingsford. He served in the Army in Europe during World War II.

He married Rosemary C. Massie in 1948. He owned several local business in Iron Mountain. and moved from the area in the 1972.

Don was loved by his family and delighted in his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

His favorite word for them all was Fantastic!

Visitation will be held on Saturday, June 23 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain.

Services will follow at 3 p.m. at the funeral home. Fr. Joseph Gouin will officiate.

Burial will be in cemetery Park.

The family is being served by Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home.

Helen M. Savage

KINGSFORD - Helen Margaret Savage, 94, of 1820 Mary's Way in Kingsford, died Tuesday June 5, 2007, at the Beverly Living Center in Florence.

She was born Aug. 12, 1912, in Wausau, Wis., daughter of the late Joseph and Margaret (Smith) Ritter. Helen had lived in Oshkosh, Wis. for many years and in Mesa, Ariz. for 25 years. She moved to Kingsford 15 years ago in order to be closer to her daughter. Helen was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the Lady Elks. She was a volunteer at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital since she moved here, and she also volunteered at the VA Medical Center and ManorCare.

She is survived by one daughter, Jacqueline Laing of Spread Eagle, Wis.; one brother, Charles (Roberta) Brand in Green Bay, Wis.; two grandchildren, Bruce (Tara) Laing of Spread Eagle and Susan Laing of Spokane, Wash.; and two great-grandchildren, Hunter Laing and Bryce Marie Laing.

Helen was preceded in death by her first husband, Herbert Rand, in 1959 and by her second husband, Robert Savage, in 1987, and by one sister, Mary Jane Wendorf.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Friday, June 15, at the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Rev. Michael March will officiate.

Burial will be in Lakeview Memorial Park in Oshkosh, Wis.

David J. Occhietti

NORFOLK, Va. - David John Occhietti, 56, of Norfolk, formerly of Iron Mountain, died Monday, June 4, 2007, in Norfolk from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

He was born on May 17, 1951, in Iron Mountain, the son of Louis and Rosemary (Tichelaar) Occhietti.

David graduated from Iron Mountain High School in 1969. He was an officer for Kingsford Public Safety before he was named the chief of police on the Hannahville Indian Reservation. He then went to work for the U.S. Department of Energy and U.P. Engineering.

David had a love for the water, setting sail in September 2006 to live on his sailboat and sail the coast of the Atlantic. He was very proud of his sailboat named "Cool Runnings" which means peaceful journey. He also liked to go diving and had a strong interest in computers and technology. His kids and grandkids will always remember his goofy sense of humor.

He is survived by two daughters, Kristal Occhietti of Kingsford and Kylene Occhietti of St. Cloud, Minn.; his mother, Rosemary Occhietti of Iron Mountain; one sister Donna (Joseph) Krall of Canton, Mich.; four grandchildren, Jonathon, Alexis, and Lindsey Aichner, and Evi Hebbeln; one nephew, Joseph Krall Jr.; his former wife, Helga Anderson; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father, Louis Occhietti on April 25, 2007.

Private family services will be held.

The Tondin-Ross and Freeman Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
