Jacqueline Vondell
NIAGARA, Wis. - Jacqueline M. Vondell, 68, of 805 Vine Court, Niagara, Wis., died Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003 at her home.
She was born April 5, 1934 in Crystal Falls, the daughter of the late Orville and Elsie (Kelly) Snodie. She graduated from Forest Park High School. Jacqueline married Edward Vondell on July 21, 1953, and he preceded her in death in 1989. She was a lifelong resident of the area. Jacqueline enjoyed playing cards, doing crossword puzzles and loved to bake.
She is survived by sons, Mark (Jenny) Vondell of Tomah, Wis. and Dale (Dottie) Vondell of Tucson, Ariz.; daughters, LuAnne Norback of Niagara, April Vondell (Rick Carlson) of Iron River and Lisa Maurer (Bob Currier) of Elk Hart, Ind.; brothers, Jim (Violet) Snodie of Zion, Ill. and Orvie (Janet) Snodie Jr. of Crystal Falls; sisters, Florence Ponchaud of Crystal Falls, Janet (Don) Lance of Felch, and Ellen Wiebe of Mesquite, N.M; six grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by two daughters, Jacqueline and Laura Lynn, and a sister, Judy Kermeen.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday at the Kingsford Funeral Home. The funeral service will be at 6 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Rev. Elbert Dulworth will officiate.
The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Kingsford Funeral Home to handle the funeral arrangements.

Walter Mazur
IRON MOUNTAIN - Walter J. Mazur, 54, of 1008 Apollo Drive, Iron Mountain, formerly of Armstrong Creek, Wis., died Monday, Feb. 24, 2003, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
Walter was born April 22, 1948, in Goodman, Wis., son of the late Walter and Arlene (Nelson) Mazur. He was a long time resident of Armstrong Creek and graduated from Goodman High School in 1966. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Stout in Menomonee, Wis. Walter had worked for the Goodman mill for many years and for the past six years he worked as a supervisor at Lakewood Kitchens in Lakewood, Wis. He was an avid fisherman and a member of the Lakes Country Bassmasters Club. He enjoyed the many bass tournaments he fished in. Walter was a former girls basketball coach, both at the grade school and high school level. He also enjoyed bocce and played in the local league in Iron Mountain.
He is survived by a daughter, Tina Ehlert of Pembine, Wis.; a special friend, Nancy Stratton of Iron Mountain and her children, Mike (Chandra) Stratton of Kingsford and Kristen Stratton of Westminster, Colo.; a brother, George (Barbara) Mazur of Manitowoc, Wis.; four sisters, Veronica (Gary) Pittman of Nebraska, Theresa (Bill) Ebert of Goodman, Rita (Dan) Hawley of Minot, N.D., and Mary (Erick) Slentz of Loveland, Colo., and two granddaughters, Cortney and Kyler Ehlert.
Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday at the Armstrong Creek Community Center in Armstrong Creek. Funeral services will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at the community center. Fr. Ed Nowakowski will officiate. Burial will be in the Armstrong Creek cemetery.
The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain to handle the arrangements.

William Willman
IRON MOUNTAIN - William W. Willman, 86, of 324 Harrison Ave., Kingsford, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Feb. 23, 2003, in San Diego, Calif.
He was born June 16, 1916, son of the late Matthew and Anna (Wickman) Willman. He spent the last few years living in San Diego, Calif. with his daughter, Julie. Known as Bill with the wide smile and friendly handshake, he was loved by all. He graduated from Felch High School. He married Gladys Lund of Felch in 1935 and she preceded him in death in 1978. Bill owned and operated his own trucking business and then joined his fellow friends and co-workers at Clairmont Transfer Co. until his retirement. He had served as a union president. Bill was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Iron Mountain and served on the church council. He was also one of the founders of the Kingsford High School Athletic Booster Club and was an avid fan of Kingsford athletics.
He was also preceded in death by five sisters, Irene Solberg, Ester Mattson, Ruth Lindstrom, Bertha Bidwell, and Mildred Olson; and a brother, Phillip Willman.
He is survived by his five children, Clare Willman of Kingsford, Clay (Donna) Willman of Sheboygan Falls, Wis., Julie Mannigel Willman of San Diego, Calif., Mark (Barbara) Willman of Chicago and David (Michaelene) Willman of Edgewater, Md.; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Edna Baravetto, Lucille Gustafson and Amy Wallace; many nieces and nephews; and a special niece, Ann Burby, who gave him loving care for many years.
Visitation will be held Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Iron Mountain. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the church. Rev. Lori Liverance will officiate. Burial will be in the Felch cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Eric, Will, Sean, Todd, and Scott Willman, and Bill and Paul Burby.
The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home to handle the funeral arrangements.

Dennis Sleik
KINGSFORD - It is with great sadness, yet great joy for him, that his family announces that Dennis passed from his earthly home to his eternal home on Sunday, Feb. 23, 2003. Dennis lived with his family at 317 Grant St., in Kingsford.
Dennis was diagnosed with a carcinoid tumor in 1998. He lived his life to the fullest and without any regrets as he was diagnosed with, receiving treatment for, and living with the type of cancer he had. He would not have lived as he had without the support of the great doctors, nurses and friends who cared for him. His family would like to thank Dr. Batti and Dr. Adamson of Iron Mountain and Dr. Pitt and Dr. Rilling of Milwaukee for their care, compassion, and willingness to help Dennis and his family whenever and with whatever they needed. Also, the bus drivers and staff at North Dickinson County Schools and Peg, Mike, Marcia and Pastor Steve for their help when it was so needed.
Dennis was born in Iron Mountain on May 26, 1956, son of Frank and Kay Sleik. He was a 1974 graduate of Iron Mountain High School. He was proud to have his picture in the Upper Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame as manager of the 1972 Mountaineer basketball team. Dennis and Debbie were married on June 2, 1978.
Dennis will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by his wife, Debbie; twin sons, Brad (Colleen Downs) of St. Paul, Minn. and Brian (Stephanie Billings) of Green Bay, Wis.; his youngest son, Dan of Kingsford; his parents, Frank and Kay Sleik of Iron Mountain; and his father-in-law, Doug Despins of Wausau, Wis. He leaves two brothers, Jim (Debbie) of Iron Mountain and their children, John, Mick, Jamie, Katie, Sarah, Kristen, Paul and Jacob and Frank (Debbie) of Oklahoma City, Okla. and his children, Frank (Jodi) and Kelly and their children. He leaves two sisters, Bev (Sam) Rose of Riverview and Jan (Dane) LaGrow of Saukville, Wis. and their children, Dean (Lori), Doug, and Lisa (Steve). He is further survived by his sister-in-law, Paula (Paul) Raymond of Mosinee, Wis. and their children, Eric and Danielle and a brother-in-law, Dan (Beth) Porter of Rothschild, Wis. and their daughter, Katie.
Dennis was preceded in death by his grandparents; an uncle, John Sleik; cousins, John and Billy Sparapani; a nephew, Tony Sleik; and his mother-in-law, Lu Despins.
Dennis will also be missed by his aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and the family's two dogs, Sparky and Tapper.
Dennis was an excellent mechanic. Throughout the years, he worked for Superior Equipment Co., Johnson-Wilson Co., Hanna Mining Co. and the city of Kingsford. The 'best job of his life' was as transportation director/bus mechanic for North Dickinson County Schools. He loved to go to work every day. He loved the work and responsibility he had. He loved the people he worked with. A sad part of his illness was not being able to continue to work there each day.
Dennis' life revolved around his family and he became active in any activity his boys participated in. He coached their soccer teams and served on the SAY board for many years. He coached Dan in hockey and served on the DAHA board for two years. He was an assistant coach for Pop Warner football. He was active in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, serving as a Webelo leader for Pack 510, assistant scoutmaster to Troop 510 and the Mackinac Island Scout Service Corp.
Dennis also became active in the youth group at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church. He chaperoned many trips to the Youth Congress in Chicago and led backpack trips to Pictured Rocks and the Porcupine Mountains for the youth and adults from the church. In the past, Dennis served as a member of Kingsford's Parks and Recreation Committee and the United Sportsman Club in Merriman. He currently was serving as a Breitung Township Schools representative on the Iron Mountain-Kingsford Community School Advisory Board.
Many people touched Dennis' life and had an impact on him. Dennis loved his bear buddy Mike; auction and junk buddy Fonzie; hockey buddies Brian, Jim, Roberta, Jerry, Rob, Bev, Greg and Beaver; farm buddies Ray and Mary; soccer buddies Dale, Julie, Ed, Bucky, Dave, Steve, Brent, Darlene and Marilyn; scout buddies Scott, Paul, Sam, Bill and Anders; Zam's buddies Mike and Keith; recycle buddy Lucy; backpack buddies Cindy, Ann, Terri, Chuck, Andy, Angela and Pete; faith buddies Pastor Steve, Dodie, Tracy, Louise and the congregation of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church; old camping buddies Brad, Gene, Dave and Mike; other mechanic buddies Bob, Mike and Dave; city buddies Bruce, Mark, John, George, Tony, Keith and Gary; ND buddies Claude, Dan, Mike, Paula, Nancy, Sissy, Linda, Joe, Ken, Tim, Steve, Matt and the rest of the North Dickinson County Schools staff; bus buddies Ann, Jan, Ila, Linda, Buddy, Wes, Ron, Rod, Rodney and Tony; his very best friends Debbie, Brad, Brian and Dan and many, many more we may have not mentioned.
Services to celebrate Dennis' life will be held Tuesday at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Iron Mountain with visitation at the church from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and services at 7 p.m. Family graveside services will be held Wednesday with burial at 11 a.m. at cemetery Park in Iron Mountain.
A memorial will be established in Dennis' name at North Dickinson County Schools.
Dennis' family has been assisted by the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain.

Leslie Wallner
KINGSFORD - Leslie (Butch) Wallner, 80, of Kingsford, passed away Thursday, Feb. 20, 2003 peacefully in his home after an enduring illness.
Butch was born Jan. 5, 1923 in Iron Mountain, the son of the late Carl and Lillian Wallner. He attended Kingsford area schools, graduating in 1941. He served in the Navy Seabees, during World War II, from March 1943 until January 1946. He met his loving wife, June Bigelow, and they were married in 1947. They were married for 55 years. The love that they shared was an inspiration to their family and friends. They were devoted to each other and were an example of what true love and marriage stand for. In 1997, they renewed their vows at their 50th wedding anniversary in the presence of their family and loved ones.
He was employed at the Niagara Mill for nine years. He and his wife owned and operated the Log Cabin Bar in Aurora, Wis. (presently known as the Hitch N Post) for 20 years. He worked at Clairmont Transfer for 20 years, retiring in 1980. Butch enjoyed his retirement and spent his leisure time woodworking, making picture clocks, and various crafts. Butch and June especially enjoyed going dancing together. He sang karaoke with his family, dedicating songs to his adoring wife. He also went golfing with friends and his 'favorite' son-in-law, Tom.
Butch is survived by his wife, June; three daughters, Penny George (Steve Plouff) of Little Suamico, Wis.; Cindy Murray of San Anselmo, Calif., Lee Ann (Thomas) Frydrych of Homestead, Wis.; six grandchildren, Jay (Lori) Glime, Lance (Sue) Glime, Travis (Kari) Glime, Shyla Capehart, Sheena Frydrych, Brandon Murray; 11 great-grandchildren, Jule, Jordan and Jessica Glime, Bryan and Joe Glime, Jacob, Katie, and Madalyn Glime, and Damon, Skyla, and Layne Capehart; a sister, Helen Johnson of Kingsford; a sister-in-law, Beth Wallner of Kingsford and several nieces and nephews.
Throughout his illness his loving wife, whom he called his 'angel, ' doted on him. She was always by his side with a cheerful smile and a loving heart. He was a wonderful father who was adored by his daughters. He was always there for them through their most difficult times to lend a hand, his loving support, and words of wisdom, advice and support. He was a great man. He will be sadly missed by his wife, family, and friends.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Kingsford Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Iron Mountain.
Pallbearers will be Jay, Lance, and Travis Glime, Brandon Murray, Tom Frydrych, and Steve Plouff.
Burial will be at cemetery Park in Iron Mountain.

Milton Smith
KINGSFORD - Milton Smith, 82, of Kingsford died Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2003.
Milton served in the Armed Forces. While serving time in Italy, he had the honor of shaking hands with the Pope. He loved watching and feeding the wildlife, especially birds. He could name nearly every bird he saw. Milton worked for years for the Ford Motor Co. and for many more years at the Dickinson County Road Commission. But the one job he had, which his family will never forget, was at the Summit Dairy. This is where he met the love of his life. He married that girl and they made their little family, one girl and two boys.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, June Smith; his parents, Earl and Elvietta Smith of Norway, and a grandson, Todd Groeneveld of Kingsford.
Milton leaves his loving family, Beverly Winkler of Kingsford, Bob (Kris) Smith of Kingsford and Allen (Pam) Smith of Sagola. He leaves six grandchildren, Trisha (Lee) Steppig of Sagola, Tim Groeneveld of San Diego, Calif., Shennan (Alan) Casari of Norway, Robert Smith of Kingsford, Heather (Dennis) Zerbst of Sagola and Brian Smith of Sagola. He also leaves six great-grandchildren, Justin, Michael, David and Chad Steppig of Sagola and Sadie and Haley Casari of Norway, and his very dear sister, Beverly Marshall of California. He will also be missed by all of his friends at Hutches garage.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the Kingsford Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Kingsford Funeral Home. Rev. Martin Koeller will officiate. Burial will be in the Quinnesec cemetery.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Kingsford Funeral Home.

Stephen LaLonde
IRON MOUNTAIN - Stephen M. LaLonde, 32, of 1805 N. Dewey St., Auburn, Ind., died Thursday, Feb. 13, 2003, at Parkview Memorial Hospital in Fort Wayne, Ind.
He was born Oct. 9, 1970, in Traverse City, lower Michigan. Steve graduated from Kingsford High School in 1989 and went on to receive a degree in social work from the University of Mary in Bismark, N.D. in 1994. He recently obtained his master's degree from Arizona State University. Steve was the administrator at The Laurels of DeKalb County Nursing Home. He was a member of the Rotary Club and the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Butler, Ind.
Steve is survived by his wife, Michelle and their two sons, Stephen Michael II and Lucas John, all living in Auburn; a son, Kevyn Ryan of Kingsford; his parents, Ron and Karen LaLonde of Quinnesec; a sister, Melissa LaLonde of Appleton, Wis.; a brother, Matt LaLonde of Quinnesec; and his grandmother, Catherine LaLonde of Iron Mountain.
He was preceded in death by is grandparents, Floyd and Louise Dishaw of Kingsford.
Visitation will be held today from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at McComb, Dilgard & Cline Funeral Home, 502 N. Main St., Auburn, Ind. 46706. Funeral services will follow at 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Locally, there will be a visitation on Friday from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. at American Martyrs Catholic Church in Kingsford. A memorial Mass will follow at 10 a.m. at the church. Fr. Raymond Valerio will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established in his memory.
Steve was an organ donor and gave the gift of life to others on Valentine's Day by donating his heart, liver and one kidney.
Local funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain.

Carol Carl
FLORENCE, Wis. - Carol H. Carl, 63, of Keyes Lake, Florence, Wis., passed away Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2003, at her home in the loving presence of her family.
Carol was born Jan. 16, 1940, in Iron Mountain, daughter of the late Walter and Helmie (Sjostrom) Gustafson. She graduated from Felch High School in 1958. She married Charles Carl on Sept. 14, 1963, at Our Saviour Lutheran Church in Iron Mountain. Carol worked at the Commercial Bank for 37 years, retiring in 1996 as vice president. She belonged to the ABWA and was a past recipient of the Women of the Year Award and also an auxiliary member of the Masonic Lodge. Carol was always filled with energy and loved the outdoors, particularly enjoying golf, early morning paddle boat rides, flowers, gardening and traveling. The last six winters she and Charles escaped the cold season with friends in Lake Havasu City, Ariz.
She is survived by her husband of 39 years, Charles Carl; two sons, Jim (Vanessa) Carl of Kingsford and Joe (Terry) Carl of Albuquerque, N.M.; a brother, David (Karen) Gustafson of Midland, lower Michigan; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain and from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Our Saviour Lutheran Church in Iron Mountain. Funeral services will follow at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the church. Rev. Doug Johnson and Rev. Stephen Cowen will officiate. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery in Florence, Wis.
Pallbearers will be Ryan Gustafson, Andy Wickman, Dean Wickman, Chris Maki, David Shampo and Terry Hanson.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in Carol's memory for Northwood's Air Lifeline, Marquette General Home Health Care or the Dickinson County Cancer Unit.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain.

Cynthia Hood
IRON MOUNTAIN - Cynthia L. Hood, 44, of 4730 Lincoln Ave., Quinnesec, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2003, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield, Wis. due to a lengthy battle with cancer.
Cindy was born Aug. 13, 1958, in Allentown, Pa., daughter of Robert and Cecilia (Klucsarits) Wechsler. After graduating from Whitehall High School in 1976, she joined the PA Army National Guard as a military police woman. Later, she relocated to Sault Ste. Marie where she finished out her 14 years in the Michigan Army National Guard as a supply sergeant. Cindy started her postal career in Newberry in 1986 as a clerk-carrier. She then transferred to the Upper Peninsula Mail Processing Center in Kingsford as a mail processor, retiring in 1999. She always said the best time of her postal job was around the Christmas holiday. 'There was always a little bit of Santa in all of us at this time of the year...always made me feel special to deliver the cards and packages.'
She married Terry Lee Hood on July 10, 1982, in Newberry.
Her special joys along with her husband, included their children, stepson, Darrell Hood of Marshfield, Wis.; stepdaughter, Angela (Eric) King of Kingsford; son, Brandon Hood (Nikki Downs) of Iron Mountain; and daughter, Sarah Hood of Quinnesec; six happy-go-lucky grandchildren, Trevor, Zachary, Kiara, Preston, Mackenzie and Makayla. She is further survived by her parents, Robert and Cecilia (Klucsarits) Wechsler; two brothers, Robert Wechsler and Joseph (Mary) Wechsler, all of Northhampton, Pa.; and two sisters, Constance (Gary) Solan of New Tripoli, Pa., and Cecilia Anne Persing of Kutztown, Pa.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Carol Anne Wechsler.
Cindy enjoyed dancing, walking, picnics, reading, sewing, going to the movies and traveling.
Visitation will be held Friday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Kingsford Funeral Home. The funeral Mass will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. at American Martyrs Catholic Church in Kingsford. Fr. Joseph Gouin will offer the Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will be in the Quinnesec cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Lenis Hood, Elvis Hood, Joe Bennett, Robert Wechsler, Joseph Wechsler, Gary Solan, Aaron Pierson and Rod Weisinger.
A memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter Roman Catholic Church in Coplay, Pa.
The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Kingsford Funeral Home of Kingsford to handle the funeral arrangements.
