Edgar Richards
IRON MOUNTAIN - Edgar 'Bud' Richards, 92, formerly of 1610 S. Park St., Iron Mountain, died Wednesday, May 12, 2004, at ManorCare Health Services in Kingsford.
Bud was born on Oct. 23, 1911, in McGill, Nev., son of the late Edgar T. and Elizabeth (Hodges) Richards. He graduated from Hancock High School where he played hockey and was a good all-around athlete.
Bud married Mary Shea on March 31, 1932, in Hancock. She preceded him in death on May 12, 2001.
Bud worked as a self-employed upholsterer for many years. He was a member of St. Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church, a lifetime member of the Iron Mountain Elks, and a former member of the Pine Grove Country Club. He enjoyed golfing and bowling.
Bud is survived by two daughters, Mary Clare (Ray) Branz of Naples, Fla. and Sheila (Jean) Barbe of Iron Mountain; two sisters, Dorothy Innes of Cheshire, Conn. and Jean Fuick of Menasha, Wis.; six grandchildren, Debra (John) Pucci of Iron Mountain, Michael Branz of Naples, Kathy Schwann of Naples, Mary Bridget (Larry) Wetzel of Villa Park, Calif., Julie (Dave) Sprenger of Laurium (Houghton County), and Cally (John) Furton of Glencoe, Ill.; and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Hamilton.
A memorial Mass will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. at St. Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Kingsford. Fr. Michael Woempner will officiate.
Entombment will be in cemetery Park.
The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain with the funeral arrangements.

Florence Nord
KINGSFORD - Florence E. 'Tiny' Nord, 86, of 217 Lyman St., Kingsford, died Thursday, Oct. 7, 2004, at ManorCare Health Services in Kingsford.
She was born on March 20, 1918, in Iron Mountain, the daughter of the late Michael and Anna (DuFresne) Mooney.
She is survived by her sister, Dorothy 'Dolly' Cocking of Kingsford; a special niece, Sharon Pucci and many other loving nieces and nephews and Snooky too.
Mrs. Nord was preceded in death by her husband, Irving; four brothers, Lawrence and Milton Bishop and Russell and Michael Mooney and three sisters, Ruth Newitt, Alice Kenney, and Pat Lucas.
Visitation will be held Monday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Tondin-Ross & Freeman Funeral Home in Iron Mountain.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Fr. Joseph Gouin will officiate. Burial will be in the Foster City cemetery.
The family requests that flowers be omitted.
The Tondin-Ross & Freeman Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Melba Johnson
KINGSFORD - Melba C. Johnson, 86, of 1820 Mary's Way, Kingsford, died unexpectedly Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2004, at her home.
Melba was born March 14, 1918, in Mountain, Wis., daughter of the late Christ and Dora (Jensen) Peterson.
She married Frederick Johnson on Dec. 12, 1942, in Ann Arbor, lower Michigan and he preceded her in death on Jan. 25, 1990. She was a resident of Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti, lower Michigan for more than 50 years, returning to this area nine years ago.
Melba worked for the University of Michigan-Women's League in food service for 25 years.
She was preceded in death by seven brothers and four sisters. She was proud of her brother, Harvey, who was killed in action and buried in France during World War II.
She is survived by two sisters, Alvina Spencer of Iron Mountain and Phyllis Jonesen of Bremerton, Wash.; many nieces and nephews including Carol (George) Atanasoff, Joyce (Howard) Woods, Gail (Richard) Dabb, Nancy Belaire, Robert Spencer, and Douglas (Dorothy) Spencer; a grandniece, Kristine (Bob) Saxon; and a grandnephew and caregiver, Steve (Patti) Atanasoff.
Melba was a gentle soul, unassuming and cheerful to the end. She will be missed by friends, family and the staff at Evergreen Heights.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Susan Korpal
VULCAN - Susan M. Korpal, 51, of Vulcan, died Monday, Oct. 4, 2004, at her home.
She was born March 1, 1953, in Novato, Calif., daughter of the late Robert and Bernice (Titus) Melville. She graduated from Novato High School in 1970.
Susan married Norm Korpal in 1975, in Big Rapid, lower Michigan. She has been a resident of the area for the past seven years, coming here from Bark River. She worked as an inventory control specialist for Wal-Mart.
Susan enjoyed gardening, working on the computer doing genealogy, and she loved to cook.
She is survived by her husband, Norm; two daughters, Kathleen (James) Sawaski of Newberry and Kelli (Ric) Powell of Ridley Park, Pa.; a brother, Robert (Karen) Melville of California; two sisters, Yvonne Kirk and Carolyn Johnson, both of California; and two grandchildren, R.J. and Henry Sawaski.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Elaine Livengood.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain.
A Memorial Service will follow at 1:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Rev. David Anderson will officiate.

Donald Schmidt
CRYSTAL FALLS - Donald H. Schmidt, 76, of 1456 Camp 5 Road, Crystal Falls, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
Don was born on Oct. 20, 1927, in Chicago, son of the late Henry and Rosella (Peskuski) Schmidt. He served in the Mountaineering Division of the United States Army during World War II.
Don married Rita Fenlon on Sept. 23, 1950, in Chicago. He lived in the Chicago area for many years and worked for Illinois Bell as a repairman for 35 years. He has been a resident of Peavy Falls for the past 18 years. Don was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church in Channing. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather.
He leaves his wife, Rita; four sons, Donald (Chris) Schmidt of Peavy Falls, Kenneth (Caryn) Schmidt, Robert (Lynn) Schmidt and Michael (Kathleen) Schmidt, all of Elmwood Park, Ill.; four daughters, Joan (Terry) Rose of Franklin Park, Ill., Mary Kay (Joe) Mastalski, Judy (Eric) Dean, and Eileen (Tom) Lepore, all of Elmwood Park, Ill.; a sister, Lenora Wengerski of Skokie, Ill.; 21 grandchildren, Todd (Becky) Schmidt, Carrie (Jake) Bradley, Kate, Johnathon, Rebecca and Mary Claire Schmidt, Alexandra and Nick Schmidt, Kevin and Megan Schmidt, Brian, Adam, Kelly, Shaun, Colleen, and T.J. Rose, Lisa, Traci and Eric Dean, and Rocco and Sam Lepore.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain. Parish prayers will be offered at 7 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at St. Rose Church in Channing. Fr. George Kuppayil will offer the Mass of Christian Burial.

Julie Badini
IRON MOUNTAIN - Julie C. Badini, 89, formerly of 104 4th St., Iron Mountain, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital.
She was born Oct.15, 1914, in Caspian, daughter of the late Conrad and Virginia (Margoni) Ambach.
Julie attended grade school in Caspian and high school at Stambaugh, graduating with the class of 1932.
She married John Badini on Oct. 16, 1937, at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Caspian. She was active with Brownies and Camp Fire Girls, serving as a leader for a number of years. She also served on the board for nine years.
Through the years, she and her husband worked for many different night clubs in Iron River and Iron Mountain. During the war, she moved back to Caspian and worked as a clerk for Marinello and Grindotti grocery store.
Julie was a former member of Immaculate Conception Church and the ladies guild, acting as treasurer. She was also a member of the Daughters of Isabella. Julie enjoyed working crossword puzzles, reading, and babysitting for her four wonderful grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Nancy (Dan) Khoury of Iron Mountain; four grandchildren, Khris (Jen) Khoury of Kalispell, Mont., Becky Khoury of Kirkland, Wash., Melissa Khoury of Iron Mountain, and Marcus Khoury at home; one great-grandson, Hunter Khoury; one brother, Edward (Luella) Ambach of Iron River; and many nieces and nephews.
Julie was preceded in death by her husband, John in 1997; two brothers, Tony and Charles Ambach; and four sisters, Mary Ambach, Edith Judd, Rose Ghiggia, and Josephine Greenlund.
Friends may call on Thursday from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. at the funeral home and at noon at American Martyrs Catholic Church in Kingsford. Fr. Joseph Gouin will offer the Mass of Christian Burial.
Burial will be in cemetery Park in Iron Mountain.

Roy A. Grigg
EAST KINGSFORD - Roy A. Grigg, 61, of 920 Superior Ave., East Kingsford, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 2004, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital.
He was born on May 5, 1943, in Marquette, the son of the late Roy M. and Marion 'Mecca' (Devold) Grigg.
Mr. Grigg worked for O.K. Auto, Northern Auto, M.J. Electric, Local 1329, and Eichleay Corporation of Pittsburgh as a safety engineer until his retirement in 2000.
He was an avid Packer and NASCAR fan. Roy was a member of the Ishpeming Elks B.P.O.E. 447. He enjoyed camping, hunting, and spending time at Camp Royal Flush. Most of all, Roy enjoyed being a grandpa and spending time with his family.
He married Kay Garrett on Nov. 16, 1963, in Ishpeming.
He is survived by his wife, Kay, two sons, Clint (fiancee Lori Neilson) of Green Bay, and Eric (Honey) of Kingsford; one daughter, Linda (Tao) Nguyen of Green Bay; one sister, Diane (William) Garrett of Ishpeming; three brothers, David (Trisha) Larry, and Glenn, all of Ishpeming; six grandchildren, Nicholas and Lindsay Grigg, Amanda Grigg, and Lynnelle, Kimidy, and Ericka Nguyen; four aunts, Helen McCracken of Marquette, Helen Kubas of Paddock Lake, Wis., Nancy (Robert) Lahde of Ishpeming, and Kay (Charles) Lyons of Ishpeming and many nieces and nephews.
Roy was preceded in death by one brother, Howard.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. until 11 a.m. (Eastern time) at Trinity Lutheran Church in Ishpeming.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. at the church. Rev. Joel Wight Hoogheem will officiate.
Burial will be in the Ishpeming cemetery.
The family request that flowers be omitted.

Walter Tomasoski Jr.
KINGSFORD - Walter 'Butch' F. Tomasoski Jr., 57, of 616 Roycroft, Kingsford, died Thursday, Sept. 30, 2004, at the Tender Care Nursing Home in Gaylord, lower Michigan.
He was born on Feb. 17, 1947, in Norway, the son of the late Walter Sr. and Genevieve (Brackett) Tomasoski.
Butch has been a resident of the area his entire life and was a 1965 graduate of Kingsford High School. He graduated from the University of Minnesota with a BS degree in education.
Butch worked for MJ ELectric for several years. He belonged to the ARC (Amateur Radio Club) and enjoyed sitting at his desk at home and camp talking on the HAM radio. Butch also enjoyed hunting, fishing, and going to camp with his dad. He was an avid Detroit Lions fan and especially enjoyed following his nieces and nephews in sports.
He is survived by a brother, David (Jane) Tomasoski of Kingsford; four nieces, Liz and Emily Droese, Abby and Jessie Tomasoski; three nephews, Dan, Josh, and Paul Droese; two aunts, Ann (James) Turini and Alice Mroz; one uncle, Gerald (Mary) Brackett, and many cousins including special cousins, Laurie Oberdorfer, Sandy McMahon, Pat and Skip Dennis.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, Oct. 5, from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain.
Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. at St. Mary Queen of Peace Church in Kingsford. Fr. Ray Valerio will offer the Mass of Christian Burial.
Burial will be in Dickinson County Memorial Gardens.
The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain with the funeral arrangements.
