Albert Howell
KINGSFORD - Albert Arthur Howell, 82, of 650 Westwood Ave., Kingsford, died Monday, May 2, 2005, at Marquette General Hospital in Marquette.
He was born on June 8, 1922, in Florence, Wis., the son of the late Albert and Charlotte (Foss) Howell.
Mr. Howell served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. Albert worked as an auto mechanic. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, baseball, and football.
He is survived by his son, Randolph (Joan) Howell of Appleton, Wis.; a grandson, Matthew Howell of Appleton, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Emmet Howell, four sisters, LaVaughn Krans, Alberta Vross, Edna Anderson, and June Ayotte.
Visitation will be Saturday from 12:30 p.m. to 1 p.m. at Tondin-Ross & Freeman Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Rev. Michael March will officiate.
Burial will be in the Homestead-Aurora cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to the American Cancer Society in Albert's name.
The Tondin-Ross & Freeman Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Gwendolyn Barba-Smith
KINGSFORD - Gwendolyn B. Barba-Smith, 89, of 1820 Mary's Way Apartment 141, Kingsford, , formerly of Detroit, died Sunday, May 1, 2005, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
She was born Dec.10, 1915, in Detroit, daughter of the late Ray A. and Lillian (Shumaker) Barba. Gwen graduated from Pershing High School. She worked as a secretary for the Michigan Credit Union League until retiring in 1980.
She married Alfred A. Smith in 1991, and he preceded her in death.
Gwen was a very generous person who supported numerous charities. She was proud of her city, Detroit and its Tigers. She was most proud of her independence.
She is survived by those who dearly loved her.
Friends may call from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday at the A. H. Peters Funeral Home in Grosse Point, lower Michigan for a time of Remembrance.
Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery in Detroit.
The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain with the local funeral arrangements.

David Rowell
KINGSFORD - David A. Rowell, 42, beloved son, brother, and uncle, died the evening of May 1, 2005, at his home.
He was born on March 16, 1963, in Iron Mountain, the son of George and Audrey (Schneider) Rowell Sr.
He will be sorrowfully missed by his family and friends.
David is survived by his parents, George Sr. and Audrey Rowell of Kingsford; a sister, Lorna (John Bednarz) Rowell of Iron Mountain; a brother, George (Netta) Rowell Jr. of Norway; four very much loved nieces, Kristin, Amanda, Jessica, and Dawn Rowell; and many special friends, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
David graduated from Kingsford High School in 1982. He loved to be at camp with his dad and PeeWee and his special camp friends. He loved deer hunting.
He will also be missed by his buddy, Maxie, his cat. He was anticipating the arrival of his first great-nephew, Elijah. He can now be with his best friend in heaven, Grandpa Rowell.
Private family services will be held
Burial will be in the Quinnesec cemetery.
The Tondin-Ross & Freeman Funeral Home of Iron Mountain is assisting the family with arrangements.

Robert Counter
AURORA, Wis. - Robert 'Bobby' Counter, 51, of 997 Counter Road, Aurora, died Saturday, April 30, 2005, at the Iron Mountain V.A. Medical Center.
Bobby was born Jan. 21, 1954, in Honolulu, Hawaii. He was a 1972 graduate of Florence High School and served in the United States Army from 1972-1974.
Bobby has worked at the Iron Mountain V.A. Medical Center for the past 16 years. He loved music, reading, and had somewhat of a green thumb. Bobby played the drums, guitar and sang in several local bands including, The New Breed, Myles Sparx and Riley Road.
He leaves two sons, Ty (Angela) Counter of Kingsford and Morgan Counter of Aurora; two daughters, Jeny (Dan) Shanoski of Bloomington, Ill. and Talor Counter of Aurora; his father, Thomas Counter Sr. of Aurora and his mother, Rose Counter of Virginia Beach, Va.; his brother, Thomas Jr. (Liz) Counter of Denver; a grandson, Cade Counter; special aunt and uncle, Bill and Kathy Counter; a niece, Heather (Derek) Williams; several great-nieces and great-nephews; special cousins, Laurie, Billy, Jim, Mike and Lisa; many other aunts, uncles and cousins and also a special friend, Tracy Mathies.
Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain.
Funeral services will follow at 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Rev. David Anderson will officiate.
Burial will be in the Homestead-Aurora cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established in his memory.

Frank Nowak
KINGSFORD - Frank B. Nowak, 81, of 824 Hamilton Ave., Kingsford, died Saturday, April 30, 2005, at Pinecrest Medical Facility in Powers.
He was born March 22, 1924, in Niagara, Wis., son of the late Thomas Sr. and Valeria (Socha) Nowak. Frank has been a lifelong resident of this area.
He was a United States Navy Veteran of World War II and served as chief cook from January 1942 to March 1947.
He married the former Dorothy Mae Hart on Aug. 6, 1955, at St. Mary and St. Joseph Catholic Church in Iron Mountain. Frank worked as a truck driver with the Teamsters Union for 40 years. He was a member of St. Mary and St. Joseph Church, Uren-Cooper-Johnson American Legion Post 50 and the Teamsters Union. Frank enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, bowling and cooking. He was a very giving person and made friends with everyone.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; a son, Craig (Maxine) Nowak of Kingsford; two daughters, Patt (Rick) Dumlao of Union City, Calif. and Jean (Rick) Woods of Kingsford; a brother, Thomas Jr. (Thelma) Nowak of Iron Mountain; two sisters, Helen Flaminio of Kingsford and Bernice Altobelli of Iron Mountain; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph and George Nowak and a sister, Ann Colantonio.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain.
Funeral services will follow at 12 noon at St. Mary and St. Joseph Church. Fr. Daniel Zaloga will offer the Mass of the Christian Burial.
Burial will be at cemetery Park.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established in his memory.

Dorothy Sparapani-Cocking
KINGSFORD - Dorothy J. 'Dolly' Sparapani-Cocking, 90, of 217 Lyman St. Kingsford, passed away on Thursday, April 28, 2005, at ManorCare Heath Service in Kingsford.
She was born July 2, 1914, in Hardwood, daughter of the late Michael and Anna (DuFresne) Mooney. Dolly was a lifelong resident of the area.
She married Frank J. Sparapani at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in 1931. Frank preceded her in death in 1965. Dolly then married Howard Cocking in 1967, at American Martyrs Catholic Church in Kingsford. Howard preceded her in death in 1979.
Dolly worked for 11 years in the hot lunch program at the Kingsford Junior High School where she enjoyed her favorite pasttimes, cooking and baking. She was a member of American Martyrs Catholic Church and was an avid Chicago Cubs fan. Dolly's grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great grandchildren were her pride and joy, and they visited her often.
She is survived by a son, Ronald (Jeanine) Sparapani of Kingsford; three daughters, Lola (Donald) Baravetto of Iron Mountain, Sheila Derrick of Oak Creek, Wis. and Rhonda (James) Smith of Glendale, Ariz.; a stepson, David Cocking of Kingsford; two sisters-in-law, Eileen and Mary Mooney; a brother-in-law, Tom Kenny Sr.; a cousin, Isabelle Mooney Alimenti; a special niece, Sharon Pucci; 22 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren, five great-great grandchildren and many loving nieces and nephews.
Dolly was also preceded in death by four brothers, Milton and Lawrence Bishop and Michael and Russell Mooney; four sisters, Ruth Newitt, Alice Kenney, Florence 'Tiny' Nord and Patti Lucas; and three stepsons, Robert, Thomas and Jerome Cocking.
Visitation will be on Sunday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain. Parish prayers will be recited at 5 p.m. at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be held on Monday at 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home and 10 a.m. at American Martyrs Catholic Church. Fr. Joseph Gouin will offer the Mass of Christian Burial.
Burial will be in Dickinson County Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Ronald Sparapani Jr., Randy Sparapani, Richard Derrick, Bill Sparpana, Chris Cocking and Mike Derrick.
The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain with the funeral arrangements.

Jeanette Miresse
IRON MOUNTAIN - Jeanette E. Miresse, 88, of 853 East C St., Iron Mountain, died Wednesday, April 27, 2005, at the Hyland Nursing Home.
She was born Dec. 8, 1916, in Pentoga, daughter of the late Arthur and Evelyn (Belongie) Turcotte. Jeanette graduated from Stambaugh High School in 1934. She moved to Iron Mountain just prior to marrying Jess Miresse on Nov. 10, 1945. He preceded her in death on Nov. 14, 1988.
Jeanette had worked the lunch counter at SS Kresge for more than 20 years. She loved to walk and enjoyed sewing, but the most important thing in her life was her family. Jeanette was a member of St. Mary and St. Joseph Catholic Church and a former member of the Daughters of Isabella
Jeanette is survived her daughter, Kathleen Cattelan of Iron Mountain; one brother, Chester (Margaret) Turcotte of Iron River, two granddaughters, Lisa (Michael) Hanna of Rockford, lower Michigan and Lori (Michael) Moreau of Breitung Township and two great-grandsons, Benjamin and Matthew Moreau.
She was preceded in death by two sisters; Josephine Turcotte and Irene Goodhall and 1 brother; Clifford Turcotte.
Friends may call from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Mary & St. Joseph Catholic Church. Fr. Daniel Zaloga will offer the Mass of Christian Burial.
Pallbearers will be Michael Moreau, Michael Hanna and Jim, Tom, Geoffrey, and Patrick Goodhall.
Burial will be in cemetery Park.

Randy Heiskala
FELCH - Randy Heiskala, 46, of Felch, died unexpectedly at his home on Monday, April 25, 2005.
Randy was born Jan. 14, 1959, in Iron Mountain. He was a 1977 graduate of Washington Park High School in Racine, Wis. and a 1988 graduate of Northern Michigan University with a degree in social work.
Not long after, Randy became an over the road truck driver. In leaving social work Randy declared, 'social work is a farce and really doesn't work!' Randy was employed by Drees Transportation in Peshtigo, Wis.
He loved hunting, fishing and going out collecting firewood. Randy became an avid NASCAR fan after the death of Dale Earnhardt and was always cheering on Jeff Gordon.
Randy leaves his two sons, Mark (Ashley) and Andrew; his mother, Martha; sister, Christine; brother, Russell; a grandson, Preston, and his favorite niece and nephew, Jamie and David.
He was preceded in death by his father, Donald, and an older brother, David.
Private family services are being held.
