Donald McLain
ARMSTRONG CREEK, Wis. - Donald L. 'Ding' McLain, 75, of Armstrong Creek, passed away Sunday, June 4, 2006, surrounded by his family at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Iron Mountain.
Don was born Dec. 25, 1930, in Goodman, Wis., son of the late Bertram and Marie (Wickstrom) McLain. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. Don lived in Green Bay, Wis. for about 20 years where he worked in real estate and insurance until returning to the area.
He was a former member of the Armstrong Creek VFW Post 7444. Don was an avid Packer fan and enjoyed reading, baseball and old western movies. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by one son, Tim (Debbie) McLain of Fence; eight daughters, Barb (George) Mazur of Manitowoc, Wis., Sharon McLain (Norm Mountjoy) of Waupaca, Wis., Sue (Frank) Nichols of Fence, Terry (Bob) Triphahn of St. Clair, Mo., Chris McLain of Green Bay, Julie (Jeff) Johnson of Escanaba, Diane (Garry) Vanderlin of Norway and Mary McLain (Jack) of Little Chute, Wis.; 19 grandchildren, Jennifer (Joel), Katie, Jed, Abe, David, LeighAnn, Ben, Jake, Jessie, Adam, Zach, Nathan, Amy, Sarah, Sally (Jody), Danielle, Nicole, Sam and Kaitlin; 11 great-grandchildren, Dylan, Ben, Noah, Bryson, Allyah, Allesha, Antoinette, Kaliah, Trevor, Eric and Katie; one sister, Colleen (Pete) Kasakaitas of Goodman; two brothers, Lloyd (Lois) McLain of Aurora and Loren (Gloria) McLain of Albuquerque, N.M.; a brother-in-law, Irvin 'Zinnie' Campbell of Green Bay; his former wife, Florence Church and several nieces and nephews.
Don was preceded in death by a sister, Fern Campbell and three brothers, Sid, Roger and Ken McLain.
Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Wednesday at St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church in Armstrong Creek.
A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. at the church. Fr. David Schmidt will officiate. Burial will be in Fence cemetery.
The Armstrong Creek VFW Post 7444 will conduct military graveside honors.
The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain with the funeral arrangements.

Estelle Kuzak
SAGOLA - Estelle M. Kuzak, 61, of W9671 M-69, Sagola, died Saturday, June 3, 2006, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
Estelle was born Oct. 20, 1944, in Montreal, Canada, daughter of the late William and Marie (Dewish) Clement. She was a 1964 graduate of Channing High School and a lifelong resident of the area.
Estelle married Roger Kuzak on June 27, 1964, in Sagola. She was a member of the Happy Hollow Homemakers Club. Estelle enjoyed traveling, loved spending time with her grandchildren, and was often referred to as the family 'go-fer.'
She is survived by her husband, Roger; a son, John (Faith) Kuzak of Sagola; a daughter, Deann (Dale) Johnson of Sagola; two brothers, James (Shirley) Clement of Maryland and Robert Clement of California; four grandchildren, Kristel and Katie Johnson and Donavon and Robert Kuzak; a brother-in-law, Michael (Connie) Kuzak; a sister-in-law, Venessa (Rick) Statum; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Estelle was preceded in death by a son, Robert Kuzak; her mother-in-law, Alice Kuzak; and her father-in-law, John Kuzak.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at Grace Presbyterian Church in Sagola.
Funeral services will follow at 1 p.m. at the church. Rev. David Anderson will officiate.
Burial will be in Channing cemetery.

Joan Murra
IRON MOUNTAIN - Joan Marie Murra, 76, of N3688 Bass Lake Road, Iron Mountain, died Saturday, June 3, 2006, at ManorCare Health Services in Kingsford.
She was born on Jan. 3, 1930, in Ironwood, the daughter of the late Arthur and Anna (Archambeau) Westergreen.
Joan graduated from St. Ambrose High School in 1947 in Ironwood. She worked at Kresge's in Ironwood and at JC Penney's in Iron Mountain. Joan was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and the Daughters of Isabella.
She enjoyed playing bingo, reading the Bible, watching EWTN, praying the rosary and playing with her cat Mouser and her son's dog Molly. Joan taught piano for many years. She was an active member of the United Sportsman Club for many years and helped with the motorcycle races and the concession stand.
Joan married William Murra on July 1, 1950, at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Ironwood.
She is survived by her husband, William; five children, Jo Ann (Larry) Johnson, Diane (Dave) Warmuth, and Patrick (Helen) Murra, all of Iron Mountain, Bill Murra of Sagola, and Jason (Linda) Murra of Rapid River; eight grandchildren, Deanna (Brent) Price of Port Angeles, Wash., Dustin Warmuth of Iron Mountain, Shawna Johnson of DePere, Wis., Jeremy (Carrie) Johnson of Lake Odessa, lower Michigan and Michael Murra, Marcus Murra, Amber Pigott, and Travis Pigott, all of Escanaba; one great-granddaughter, Polly Price and one great-grandson, to be born in August, Riley Johnson.
Joan was preceded in death by two children, Mary and John Murra; one sister, Louise Celinsky; and three brothers, Arthur, William, and Harry Westergreen.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home. The Daughters of Isabella will say the rosary Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be Thursday at 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home and at 10 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Msgr. James Kaczmarek will offer the Mass of Christian Burial.
Burial will be in cemetery Park.

Robert McBride Sr.
KINGSFORD - Robert McBride Sr., 80, of 320 Hooper St., Kingsford, died Thursday, June 1, 2006, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
He was born on Feb. 27, 1926, in Pequaming, son of the late George and Isabelle (Davis) McBride. He served in the United States Army. Bob met and married Emma Merritt on Jan. 2, 1945, in Baraga. He worked as a machinist for Lake Shore Inc., until retiring in 1986. He was a lifelong resident of the Upper Peninsula.
Bob enjoyed bowling, horseshoes, and singing karaoke. He loved watching all sports, and especially watching his grandchildren play sports.
He is survived by his wife, Emma; children, Robert Jr. (Susan) McBride of Iron Mountain, Susan (Kirby) Nixon of Rathdrum, Idaho, Donald (Sherri) McBride of Kingsford, David McBride of Kingsford, Mary Taylor (fiance Mark Grahm) of Kingsford, Carol (Robert) Needham of Kingsford, and Laurie (Terry) Martin of Kingsford; brother, Thomas (Denise) Shalifoe of Freemont, Neb.; sisters, Patricia (Robert) Egbers of Freemont, Neb., Karen (Gerry) McKinney of Washington, and Linda (Bruce) Kemponen of L'Anse; several grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by an infant son, George; a grandson, Robert Needham Jr.; a granddaughter, Tashina Needham; and three brothers, Larry, Jerry, and George.
Visitation will be held on Sunday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain.
The funeral will follow at 7 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home. Fr. Joseph Gouin will officiate.
Burial will be in cemetery Park in Iron Mountain.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Eva Minella
IRON MOUNTAIN - Eva E. Minella, 95, of 1218 Stockbridge Ave., Iron Mountain, died Saturday, May 27, 2006, at her home.
She was born Nov. 18, 1910, in Iron Mountain, daughter of the late Thomas and Ellen (Larson) Polkinghorne. Eva was a lifelong resident of Iron Mountain.
She married John E. Minella in September 1927. He preceded her in death on April 10, 1970. Eva owned and operated Minella's Restaurant for several years. When the Chippewa Club opened, she went to work there and remained until her retirement in 1984.
She enjoyed cooking and being a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great grandmother to her family. She will be sadly missed.
She is survived by her son; John 'Jack' (Marlene) Minella of Breitung Township; her daughter, Marquita (Jess) Reiten of Breitung Township; eight grandchildren, Debra (Phil) Musgrove, Jon (Chris) Minella, Mike Hartzheim, Dawn Hartzheim, Robin (Tom) Mathea, Teresa (Rick) Paul, Donna Watts, and Diane Hulbert;14 great-grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Eva was preceded in death by one daughter, Gerry Minella; two brothers, Thomas and Ernest Polkinghorne and a grandson, Randy Peterson
Visitation will be held today from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home.
The funeral service will be on Wednesday at 10 a.m. at American Martyrs Church. Fr. Joseph Gouin will offer the Mass of Christian Burial.
Burial will be at cemetery Park.

Ernestine Carlson
KINGSFORD - Ernestine M. Carlson, 75, of 117 E. Sagola Kingsford, died Friday, May 26, 2006, at Manorcare Health Service in Kingsford.
She was born Jan.19, 1931, in Iron Mountain, daughter of the late Ernest and Mabel (Johnson) Tomassoni. Ernestine has been a lifelong resident of this area and was a 1949 graduate of Iron Mountain High School.
She married William "Bill" Carlson on Jan. 20, 1951 at First Lutheran Church in Iron Mountain. Ernestine worked for Ford Motor Co., Cummins Diesel and Nelson Paint. She spent twenty one years in bookkeeping at Champion Inc. before retiring in 1990. Ernestine was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, the Martha Circle and a choir member for over 60 years. She was the first female church council member. Ernestine was also a member of Pine Grove Country Club. She enjoyed reading, music and singing in the choir. She loved traveling and had traveled all over the world. She was preceded in death by her sister Jeanette Patterson.
She is survived by her husband, William 'Bill'; her son, Dr. Thomas (Evelyn) Carlson of Antioch, Ill.; her daughter, Joy Carlson of Kingsford; her mother-in-law, Merle Carlson Nelson; brother-in-law, Richard Patterson Sr. of Iron Mountain; three grand daughters, Carissa of Kingsford, Katie of San Diego, Calif. and Colleen of Fresno, Calif.; two step-grand daughters, Andrea (Chad) Wolever of Battle Creek, lower Michigan and Samantha Sager of Okemos, lower Michigan and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to11 a.m. on Tuesday at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Iron Mountain.
Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. on Tuesday. Rev. Steve Cowen will officiate. Pallbearers will be Jim Swanson, Warren Weber, Dr. Barry Johnson, Louis Cini, Don Pedo and Peter Tomassoni.
Burial will be in cemetery Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her memory to Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, Spring Lake Humane Society or the Northwood's Humane Society in Iron River.

Pearl Grimes
KINGSFORD - Pearl Grimes, 102, of Kingsford, went to be with our Lord on Thursday, May 25, 2006, at Freeman Nursing and Rehabilitation Community in Kingsford.
She was born June 20, 1903, in Ishpeming, daughter of the late Thomas and Elizabeth Carlyon. Pearl graduated from Ishpeming High School, attended Northern Michigan University and obtained her masters degree in education from Wayne State University.
She married Leo E. Grimes in Ishpeming on June 17, 1931. He preceded her in death on Aug. 12, 1976. Pearl started out as a teacher at Washington School in Iron Mountain.
For eight years Pearl and Leo lived in Dearborn, lower Michigan, where she taught and became principal at Avondale School in Inkster. Upon moving back to the area, Pearl taught first grade at Westwood School until retiring in 1965.
She was the oldest living member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Iron Mountain. Pearl was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma teachers organization, Pine Grove Country Club, and a lifetime member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was an avid bridge player till age 95 and was a member of several bridge clubs. Pearl enjoyed traveling and spending the winters in Florida.
She is survived by three daughters, Kathleen Keiser of Charlotte, N.C., Mary (Michael) Pulick of Ann Arbor, lower Michigan and Carol (James) Pezzullo of Kingsford; 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by an infant son; a great-granddaughter, Karly Pezzullo-Igo and two sisters and four brothers.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church in Iron Mountain.
Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. at the church. Rev. Dr. Meredith Rupe will officiate. Burial will be in Quinnesec cemetery.
Pallbearers will be James Pezzullo Sr., James Pezzullo Jr., Michael Pulick Sr., Michael Pulick Jr., Matthew Pulick and Harry Culver.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Freeman Nursing Center Activity Fund.

Harold Holmquist
KINGSFORD - Harold W. Holmquist, 95, of 609 E. Breen Ave., Kingsford, died Thursday, May 25, 2006, at ManorCare Health Services in Kingsford.
He was born Aug. 23, 1910, in Dilley, Ore., son of the late William and Ellen (Wahlstrom) Holmquist. His mother died when he was nine months old and he was raised by his grandmother, Louisa Wahlstrom in Iron Mountain. He has been a resident of this area for the past 65 years.
He married Bertha Peterson on Sept. 28, 1936, in Marquette. Harold worked many years as a logger in the U.P. and it was said that he was a good man in the woods. During World War II, he worked at the Ford Plant making gliders. In 1945, he became a partner in Holmquist & Peterson Heating Service.
Harold was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the Masonic Lodge 44. After his retirement, he spent many hours in his workshop making items for Wildlife Unlimited and his family. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and woodworking.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Bertha; two daughters, Ellen (Ronald) Krieg of Marquette and Melanie (Dick) Froling of Green Bay, Wis.; one son, Jerry (Liz) Holmquist of Iron Mountain; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
He was preceded in death by a son, Richard Holmquist.
Visitation is scheduled for today from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held today at 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Rev. David Anderson will officiate.
Burial will be in the Quinnesec cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church.
