Doris Damian

Doris K. Damian, 89, of Lakeport, formerly of Detroit, died Thursday, May 3, 2007 in Port Huron Hospital.

She was born June 17, 1917 in Detroit and moved to this area in 1979.

Doris was a graduate of Denby High School, Detroit. She and her husband operated a party store in Harper Woods. Following that she was an instructor in Detroit teaching English and business courses.

She retired to Lakeport where she helped in the family owned ice cream business.

Doris was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She is survived by her husband of 70 years, Nicholas; her daughter, Barbara D. (Larry) Praet of Port Huron; sister, Marilyn Spillman of Flat Rock; brother, Don (Jan) Berschbach of Gaylord; granddaughter, Carrie (Andy) Foster of Waterberry, VT; grandson, Matthew (April) Praet of Grosse Pointe; great-grandchildren, Benjamin Praet and Katie Foster; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Richard and sister, Winifred McPhail.

Family funeral services will be held Monday (5/7) at White Chapel cemetery, Troy.

Visitation is 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday (5/6) at Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the Port Huron Kiwanis Foundation.

Yvonne Sweet

Yvonne Sweet, age 68 of Clyde Twp., went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, May 29, 2007. She was born October 28, 1938 to Harvey and Gladys Doan, and was a life-long resident of the Port Huron area. She married Lloyd Sweet on July 8, 1968. Yvonne is survived by her mother, Gladys Doan, two brothers, Harvey (Beverly) Doan, and David Doan, two sisters, Janet Laming, and Diane (Lyle) Ostrander, a brother-in-law, Charles (Mary) Sweet, 12 nieces and nephews, and several great-nieces and nephews, and many others that considered her Aunt Bon. Yvonne was a truly caring person who loved people, loved life, and had two very special friends, Betty Doan and Dee Gilbert. Yvonne was preceded in death by her husband Lloyd, and her father Harvey Sr. A funeral service will take place at 12:30 PM on Friday in the Smith Family Funeral Home - South, 1230 7th Street with The Rev. Max Amstutz officiating. A graveside committal service will follow in Kinney cemetery. Pallbearers will be Michael Laming, Harvey Doan, Bryan Lawry Jr., Michael Laming Jr., Eric Hubbard, Jamie Main, Nicholas Cutcher, and Douglas Gilbert. Visitation will be Friday beginning at 10 AM. Memorials may be made to her family.

Jean Belyea

Jean Belyea, age 84, of Marysville, died Friday, June 1, 2007 after a long illness.

She was born January 15, 1923 in Capac. She was a life long resident of the Blue Water Area.

She married John W. Belyea on May 30, 1942 in Port Huron. He died February 28, 1977.

Jean was a loving mother and grandmother. She is survived by two sons, Gary (Donna) Belyea and Jack (Mary) Belyea, both of Port Huron; four daughters, Jackie (Larry) Kuhnert of Naples, Florida, Pam Wilkins of Marysville, Kathy (Ed) Alexander of Port Huron, and Debbie Smith of Burtchville; 12 grandchildren, Kevin, Keith (Leslie), Robbie, Dustin, and Craig Belyea, Laura Lee McCarthy, Jennifer (James) Bellinger, Ryan Kuhnert, Corey Wilkins, Angela Alexander, and Darren and Keaton Smith; 11 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Barbara Morris, Marjorie (Bill) Weston, and Gail (Ken) Mulka; and a special friend, Nina Rogers.

Jean was also preceded in death by a daughter, Judy Jones; and six brothers, Wil- liam, Jack, Richard, Robert, Herbert, and James Lewis.

The funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. Tuesday (6/5) in the Smith Family Funeral Home - North, 1525 Hancock Street with The Rev. Stan Liechty, Associate Pastor at Colonial Woods Missionary Church officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Hope cemetery.

Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Friends may visit at the funeral home Monday (6/4) from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorials may be made to Colonial Woods Missionary Church, the Port Huron Hospital Foundation, or the charity of the donor's choice.

William Oliver

William M. Oliver, 64, of Fort Gratiot Twp., passed away Sunday, May 6, 2007 in Mercy Hospital following a long battle with cancer.

He was born to William and Geraldine Oliver on March 14, 1943 in Battle Creek, attended the Port Huron schools, graduated from Port Huron High School in 1961, and received his Associates Degree from Ferris State University.

On October 11, 1975 Bill married Nan Foster. He worked for the St. Clair County Road Commission for 35 years retiring in 1999 as Director of Operations.

He loved the outdoors and working in his beautiful yard. Bill and Nan particularly loved trailoring their Sea Ray to many remote places such as the Trent Severn waterway, 1000 Islands, Georgian Bay, and the Muskoka Lake region to name a few.

Bill was very devoted to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, serving several terms on the vestry. As property chairman he took care of the church buildings and surroundings. He was a very honest, compassionate, and caring individual, and dearly loved his family, neighbors, friends, and St. Paul's parishioners.

Bill is survived by his wife of nearly 32 years, Nan F. Oliver; his son, Andrew (Stacey) Oliver; his grandson, Gabriel Andrew Oliver; his sister, Patricia (Dick) Bingham; his father-in-law, Louis Foster II; his brother-in-law, Lou Foster III; a niece, Abbey (Jim) Brown and their children, Madison and Carson; and two nephews, Rick (Ronda) Bingham and Ron (Kerri) Bingham and their children, McHale, Noell, Logan, and Brendan.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his mother-in-law, Ruth Foster.

A service in Bill's memory will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 12, 2007 in St. Paul's Episcopal Church. The Rev. Rollin Norris will officiate. Interment will be in Lakeside cemetery. Visitation will be at the church one hour prior to the service.

Contributions may be made in Bill's memory to the American Cancer Society or St. Paul's Episcopal Church.

Cremation arrangements were by Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock St.

Beatrice Calladine

Beatrice A. Calladine, age 87 of Fort Gratiot and formerly of Dearborn, died Saturday, May 19, 2007 at her home in Mercy Village. She was born November 19, 1919 in River Rouge, Michigan. She has lived in Fort Gratiot for the past 5 years. She married Gerald T. Calladine on August 22, 1942 at Christ Lutheran Church in River Rouge. He preceded her in death on October 7, 1991. Beatrice enjoyed crocheting, embroidery, bowling, and playing cards. She is survived by 3 children, Ernest W. (Connie) Calladine of Westland, Geraldine (James) Schmidt of Fort Gratiot, and Kenneth P. Calladine of Auburn, Pennsylvania, 5 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren. A funeral service will take place at 11 AM Tuesday in the Smith Family Funeral Home - North, 1525 Hancock Street, with The Rev. Donald Doerzbacher officiating. Burial will follow in Glen Eden Lutheran Memorial Park in Livonia. Friends may visit at the funeral home beginning at 9 AM on Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the People's Clinic or the charity of the donor's choice.

Nancy Blizzard

Nancy S. Blizzard, 70 of Port Huron passed away at home on Mother's Day, May 13, 2007 following a long illness. She was born February 10, 1937 in Toledo, OH. She graduated from Bowling Green High School in 1954. She graduated from the Port Huron Jr. College nursing program in 1963 and became a Registered Nurse. She later pursued a graduate degree in nursing at Wayne State University.

Nancy worked as a RN at Port Huron Hospital for several years and later at a private practice. She then worked as a Public Health RN for the St. Clair County Health Department until her retirement. Nancy was a dedicated and skilled nurse who loved her profession.

Nancy was well known for her love for animals. She volunteered at animal shelters and contributed to many animal charities. She adopted and found homes for many stray animals over the years. Nancy was an avid reader with a lifelong passion for learning.

Nancy was a devoted mother and sister to her family. She is survived by her three children, Lawrence and Timothy Spiess, both of Port Huron, & Patricia (Stephen) Rising of Marshall, MI. She is also survived by several brothers & sisters. She was preceded in death by her husband, Durward Blizzard who passed away in 1996.

Family funeral services were held yesterday in Smith Family Funeral Home-South, 1230 Seventh St. Burial was in Burtchville Twp. cemetery.

Contributions in Nancy's memory may be made to Blue Water Hospice.

Lillian Bernosky

Mrs. Lillian P. Bernosky, 81, of Port Huron, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, June 7, 2007, in Port Huron Hospital. She was born on September 1, 1925 in New Ulm, Minnesota to the late Emma and Gotthilf Kassuelke. She married John W. Bernosky on September 5, 1947 in Highland Park, Michigan.

Lillian was a devoted homemaker who found great joy providing love, guidance and support to her husband, children, grandchildren and many friends. She was a wonderful woman and will be dearly missed. She was a devout Lutheran and attended Trinity Lutheran Church in recent times.

She is survived by her son, Craig S. (Melanie) Bernosky of Port Huron, and grandchildren Maelynn M. Bernosky of Brooklyn, New York, LeeAnn M. Bernosky of Kalamazoo, Michigan, and Randall A. Bernosky of Chicago, Illinois, step-grandchildren Jeffrey T. Keith of Rochester HIlls, Michigan, Laurie Anna Keith of Chicago, Illinois and Kevin M. Keith of Port Huron. She is also survived by a sister, Marcella Sommers of New Ulm, Minnesota, niece Lorraine (Warren) Wright of Davidson, North Carolina and special nephews Kurt (Katrina) Wright of Charlotte, North Carolina and Tim (Tammy) Wright of Baton Rouge, Louisiana as well as many other family and friends.

She was proceded in death by her husband, John W. Bernosky in 2002 and a beloved son, Randall J. Bernosky in 1969.

Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 on Friday, June 8, 2007 at the Smith Family Funeral Home, 1525 Hancock St. Funeral services will be in the funeral home at ll:00 a.m. Saturday with Pastor Robert Mann of Trinity Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in White Chapel cemetery in Troy, Michigan at 2:00 p.m. Saturday.

Mrs. Bernosky's pallbearers will be Randall Bernosky, Warren Wright, Kurt Wright, Tim Wright, Jeffrey Keith and Kevin Keith. Honorary pallbearers will be grandaughters Maelynn and LeeAnn and step-granddaughter Laurie Anna Keith.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider Trinity Lutheran Church or the Fort Gratiot Rotary Club.

Frank Talarico

Frank P. Talarico, 82, of Port Huron Township, died Friday, May 25 in Port Huron Hospital after a long illness.

He was born April 28, 1925 in Flint and has lived here since 1966.

Frank married Imogene A. Baur June 26, 1948 in Flint.

He was a retired sales representative for McKesson Pharmaceuticals with thirty- eight years of service. Frank was a veteran of W.W. II, serving with the Army Air Corps in the European Theatre. He was a member of B.P.O.E. #343, L.O.O.M. #158, Chas Hammond Post #8, American legion and Chas Schoor Post #7696, V.F.W. He was twice selected "Elk of the Year" in 1992 and 93.

Frank is survived by his wife, Imogene; his daughter, Toni Vesper of Swartz Creek, his sons, Dan of Melbourne, FL and Dennis of Port Huron; grandsons, Tim (Andrea) Vesper of Swartz Creek and Ben (Sara Ledford) Vesper of Bolingbrook, Il; great granddaughters, Sarah and Emma Vesper both of Swartz Creek; brother, John (Dorothy ) Talarico of Flint; sisters-in-law, Pauline Talarico of Beaverton, MI and Marjorie Parks of Flint and several nieces and nephews.

Frank was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, two sisters and his son-in-law, Don Vesper.

In accordance with Frank's wishes there will be no viewing or services. A memorial luncheon will be held later.

Because of family allergies, no flowers are desired but memorials may be made to Make a Wish Foundation, Community Service of Elk's Lodge #343 or the charity of the donor's choice.

A special thank you to the Visiting Nurses Association for their care.

Cremation has taken place.

Robert Melvin

Robert L. Melvin, 91, of Fort Gratiot, died June 1, 2007 in his home unexpectedly.

He was born on August 28, 1915 in Kent County, Michigan.

Bob married Ruth Martin. She preceded him in death on September 20, 2006.

He is survived by one son and four daughters.

Following Bob's wishes cremation will take place. No services or visitation are scheduled.

Arrangements are by the Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home.

Theodosia Sawyer

Theodosia I. "Ted" Sawyer, age 94 of Three Lakes, Wisconsin, and formerly of Port Huron died Friday, May 4, 2007 in Three Lakes, Wisconsin.

She was born September 29, 1912 in Remus, Michigan to Alonzo and Martha Johnson.

For the past 12 years Ted has lived in Wisconsin with her daughter Betty. Before liv- ing in Wisconsin, she and her husband, Russell Sawyer, lived in Port Huron.

She married Russell E. Sawyer on October 20, 1929 in Remus, Michigan. He preceded her in death on September 28, 1989. Mrs. Sawyer was in Port Huron just recently for an exhibition of her husband's photography.

She was a member of the Gratiot Park United Methodist Church, and had served as the church superintendent, and was involved with the church primary department for many years. She also was an accomplished seamstress, and worked out of her home.

She is survived by a daughter, Betty (Louis F. Gerzic Jr.) Lutzka of Three Lakes, Wisconsin; six grandchildren, Beverly (Jeff) Kile of Apple Valley, Minnesota, John (Kathy) Lutzka of Maple Grove, Minnesota, Denise (Steve) Hanson of Duluth, Minnesota, Debbie (Lannie) Askew of Clinton, Maryland, David (Lori) Lutzka of Duluth, and Sandra (Greg) Sauvé of Apple Valley; 11 great-grandchildren, Nathan, Ryan, and Janna Lutzka, Brooke and Ashley Kile, Jonathon and Joseph Askew, Bryton and Cira Lutzka, and Chelsea and Kayla Sauvé; two great-great-grandchildren, Madison and Sawyer Lutzka; two sisters, Helen Morgan of Grand Haven, Michigan, and Thelma Dickerson of Grand Rapids; and a brother, Ollie Johnson of Cedar Springs, Michigan.

Mrs. Sawyer was preceded in death by a son, Russell E. Sawyer Jr.; and a great-grandson, Micah Askew.

A funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. Friday (5/11) in the Gratiot Park United Methodist Church with The Rev. Robert D. Chapman officiating. Burial will follow in Lakeside cemetery.

Friends may visit from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday (5/10) in the Smith Family Funeral Home - North, 1525 Hancock Street, and on Friday at church beginning at 10 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Gratiot Park United Methodist Church, or the charity of the donor's choice.

Ernest Oppliger

Ernest F. Oppliger, 84, of Port Huron, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, May 9, 207 in Port Huron Hospital.

He was born to Edwin and Eleanore Oppliger on September 2, 1922 in Lincoln, Kansas.

He attended Concordia Teachers College in Seward, Nebraska before serving with the U.S. Air Force during World War II. Later he graduated from Valparaiso University Law School in 1951 and married Florence K. Krueger in Harbor Beach on June 16, 1951.

He came to Port Huron in 1957 and practiced law until being appointed Circuit Court Judge by Governor William Milliken in 1974. He retired from the bench in August of 1994.

Judge Oppliger was a member of the Michigan Bar Association and was a member and past president of the St. Clair County Bar Association. He was also a member and past president of both the Optimist Club and Our Saviour Lutheran Church, and was a member of Port Huron Golf Club.

Judge Oppliger is survived by his wife of nearly 56 years, Florence K. Oppliger; his five children, Ellie (Ralph) Banish of Port Huron, Karen (Richard) Widerynski of Long Beach, CA, David (Kristine) Oppliger of Fort Gratiot, Douglas (Shawn) Oppliger of Hancock, MI and Cynthia (Tim) Baker of Noblesville, IN; ten grandchildren, Laura Banish, Stasia Widerynski, Eric and Lucas Oppliger, Karen, Louise and Ruth Oppliger and Zachary, Melissa and Elizabeth Baker; his sister, Sue Oppliger of Shreveport, LA; his brother, Paul Oppliger of Traverse City; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his grandson, Jeffrey Banish.

The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 12, 2007 in Our Saviour Lutheran Church. Pastor Donald Doerzbacher will officiate. Burial will be in Rock Falls cemetery, Harbor Beach at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Visitation will be in Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock St. Thursday (5/10) from 7 to 9 p.m. and on Friday from (5/11) 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and on Saturday at the church beginning one hour prior to the service.

Members of the St. Clair County Bar Association will be honorary pallbearers.

Contributions may be made in Judge Oppliger's memory to Our Saviour Lutheran Church, the YMCA, or Blue Water Hospice.
