Iva M. DuBois
January 5, 1935 -- July 16, 2009

Iva Mae DuBois, age 74, of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, passed away on Thursday, July 16, 2009 at her home. Iva was born on Saturday, January 5, 1935 in Wayne County, Michigan, the daughter of Wilfred and Ruby (Grim) Reaume. On January 20, 1951, she married Joseph L. DuBois. He preceded her in death on February 10, 1995.
Funeral services were held on Monday, July 20, 2009 at 11 a.m. from Helms Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with Rev. Nancy Casey Fulton of Woodland Hospice officiating. Interment followed the funeral service in Memorial Gardens cemetery beside her husband. Friends gathered with the family on Saturday and Sunday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions were suggested to Woodland Hospice, the Morey Cancer Center, or Same Day Surgery at Central Michigan Community Hospital.
Iva was a resident of the area for the past twenty years. Iva was a homemaker most of her life, before she went to work for McDonalds for five years, serving as a hostess, birthday party coordinator, and her favorite job, as a food prep employee. She enjoyed playing bingo, camping, fishing, gardening and canning her produce, attending family reunions, and loved her religion.
Survivors included her children: Joseph (Debra) DuBois, Jr. of Weidman, Wilfred (Dawn) DuBois of Remus, August (Sheri) DuBois of Monroe, Iva (David) Fletcher of South Lyons, Anna (Jack) Judson of Pontiac, and Tina Derryl) LaFave of Caledonia, Michigan; twenty one grandchildren and thirty seven great grandchildren; a brother, Leo Reaume of Mt. Pleasant, and a sister, Joyce Sively of Paw Paw, Michigan. Iva was preceded in death by her husband, three brothers, Junior, Burel, and Alan Reaume, and sisters, Ruby Davis and Marceline McFeters.

Louis Henry Smith
September 28, 1930 - July 14, 2009

Louis Henry Smith, age 78, of Lansing and Bay Port, Michigan, passed away on Tuesday, July 14, 2009 at Ingham Regional Medical Center in Lansing. Louis was born on Sunday, September 28, 1930 on the family farm near Remus, Michigan, the son of Henry and Johanna (Boettcher) Smith. On November 6, 1976, Louis married the former Carolyn Engelhard in Lansing, Michigan.
Louis was employed at Fisher Body GMC and then for forty years as the Assistant Manager of Technical Operations at Michigan State University in East Lansing. He graduated from Western Michigan University in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Mt. Pleasant, where he attended all of the Bible classes offered by the church. He helped on church fundraisers, dinners, ushered and served as Trustee for thirty years. He and Carolyn co-hosted monthly senior dinners in a previous church. He was a veteran of the United States Marines, serving in the early 1950s. He belonged to Society of Electrical Engineers and the Lansing Engineers Club, the Society of Broadcast Engineers, the Michigan Association of Broadcasters. He was a long time HAM radio operator volunteering for many charitable and disaster events, with the call sign of K8WEX. He enjoyed farming, once planting ninety five tomato plants on a small plot of land. He was a long time volunteer with his wife, Carolyn, with the Bay Port Fish Sandwich Fest.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn; a brother, Soenckie Smith of Remus, four sisters: Marge Remer of St. Johns, Arlene Parrish of Lansing, Nathalie (Ron) Brand of Stanton, and Louise Smith of Remus. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services were held on Friday, July 17, 2009 at 2 p.m. from Christ the King Lutheran Chapel in Mt. Pleasant with Pastors Samuel Reith and Jonathon Bakker officiating. Interment will took place in North Lawn cemetery, Sebewaing, Michigan on Tuesday, July 21 at 11:30 a.m. Honorary pallbearers were Andrew Sullivan, Wayne Reister, and Ron Brand. Active bearers were Todd Greenlee, Alan Block, Dick Harless, Ronald Deeg, John Schimmelmann, and Dave Coyne. Memorials in Louiss memory were suggested to Zion Lutheran Church.

Harold W. Mullins
June 7, 1925 -- July 11, 2009

Harold William Mullins, age 84, passed away on Saturday, July 11, 2009 surrounded by his loved ones at the Woodland Hospice House in Mt. Pleasant. Harold was born in Mt. Pleasant on June 7, 1925 to William and Florence Hess Mullins.
Funeral services for Harold were held on Wednesday, July 15, 2009 at 11:00 AM from the Helms Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with Rev. Don Wendell of the Leaton United Methodist Church officiating. Interment took place after the service at Riverside cemetery. Military honors were conducted at graveside by the VFW and American Legion. The family greeted friends on Tuesday, July 14, from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 pm and on Wednesday an hour before the services at Helms Funeral Home. Memorial contributions are suggested to Woodland Hospice, the Pardee Cancer Fund or the Leaton United Methodist Church Parking Lot Fund. Envelopes are available at Helms Funeral Home.
Harold graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1943. After graduating, he entered the U.S. Air Corp and graduated as a single engine fighter pilot. On November 23, 1948, he and Freda Westbrook were married at the First Church of Christ in Mt. Pleasant. Harold worked at the Mt. Pleasant Post Office and at Dow Chemical as an instrument journeyman for 30 years. He enjoyed golfing, camping, wood carving, keeping tropical fish, but most of all his family.
Harold is survived by his wife, Freda of Mt. Pleasant; three children and their spouses, William and Jo Yvette Mullins of Lansing, Patty and Kenneth Cole of Mt. Pleasant, and James and Connie Mullins of Rapid City; 9 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; a sister and her husband, Jean and George Brassington of LaMesa, CA; and many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents

Nina Mae Fawley
February 20, 1915 -- July 11, 2009

Nina Mae Fawley, age 94, of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, passed away on Saturday, July 11, 2009 at her home. Memorial services are planned at a later date. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Helms Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant.

Esther Lucille Vollmer
August 28, 1928 - July 8, 2009

Esther Lucille Vollmer, age 80, of Mt. Pleasant, formerly of Oil City, passed away on Wednesday, July 8, 2009 at the Laurels of Mt. Pleasant after a lengthy illness. Esther was born on August 28, 1928 in Lee Township, Midland County, Michigan the daughter of Winford and Marie (Denton) Jewell. On August 24, 1947, Esther married Jacob Vollmer in Newago County, Michigan. Jacob preceded her in death on May 14, 1987.
Funeral services were held on Friday, July 10, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. from the Helms Funeral Home with Rev. Tommy Jeffrey of the Evangelical Assembly of God officiating. Following the funeral service, interment will take place in Kelly cemetery, Oil City beside her husband. The family gathered with friends on Friday from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions in Esthers memory may be made to the wishes of the family. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
Esther enjoyed crocheting, playing bingo, playing canasta with her sisters, collecting tea pots, working in her garden and canning the produce that she grew. She worked for over 20 years at Ferro Manufacturing doing a variety of different jobs. Her last job was as a fork truck driver, of which she was very proud of her ability on it.
Esther is survived by her children, Helen (Scott) Rydman of Coleman, and Esther (Lee) Uphold of Mt. Pleasant; a son-in-law Ed Rhode of Oil City; six grandchildren, Ted, Cynthia, Angela, Alan, Tonia and Pamela; six great grandchildren: Alivia, Jayson, Chelsa, Emily, Skyeleigh, and Presten; three brothers, Lyle (Chloe) Jewell, Paul (Sharon) Jewell, all of Arizona, and Steve Jewell of Kalkaska; and two sisters, Joyce Estep of Evart and Beulah Grenert of Oil City. Esther was preceded in death by her husband, Jacob; a daughter, Connie Rhode; a sister, Alice Timmer; a grandson, Connor; and a brother-in-law, Rev. James Estep.

Rudolph Earl Lueder
September 29, 1923 -- July 6, 2009

Rudolph Earl Lueder died Tuesday morning at his home between Mt. Pleasant and Remus. Rudolph was born on September 29, 1923 to Richard and Lyda (Strong) Lueder. He had been a lifelong resident of Broomfield Township.
Rudolph was a Remus High School graduate and began farming with his father after graduation. He married Alice Flachs in 1945. The couple had started and operated many businesses in the same area. They began selling tractors such as Ferguson, Minneapolis-Moline, and Allis Chalmers, along with other farm equipment and were among the first in the area to sell televisions as well. They started the ITCO store near their home, which supplies local farmers with parts and supplies. In 1967, they built the Broomfield Valley Mobile Home Park, which is presently still in business.
Rudolph and Alice began spending their winters in Florida, where he also tried his hand with Florida real estate by buying and selling homes and lots in Nokomis and Venice, Florida. He built his own permanent residence in Venice, Florida as well as building a home in Michigan, and enjoyed spending time with his family in both locations.
Rudolph enjoyed fishing (especially salt water fishing) and extensive travel. The couple had visited places such as Cuba, Germany, Alaska, and Hawaii, as well as all but a few of the states in the continental U.S. He remained very busy farming throughout his entire life, as well as working on his homes in both states.
Rudolph was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. He was a loving husband, father, and was proud of his committed involvement in the lives of his 10 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
Rudolph is survived by his wife, Alice (Flachs) Lueder; two daughters, JoAnn (Douglas) Perkins of Gibsonton, FL and Kathleen (Jim) Gatten of Riverdale, MI; and two sons, Ted (Roxanne) Lueder of Mt. Pleasant and Fred (Debbie) Lueder of Huntington Woods, MI.
Funeral services for Rudolph will be held on Thursday, July 9, at 11:00 A.M. from the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Mt. Pleasant with Pastor Mark Behenna officiating. Interment will follow the service in Broomfield Township cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 6 to 8 pm, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm, and on Thursday at the church an hour before services. Memorial contributions are suggested to Woodland Hospice and the American Diabetes Association. Envelopes are available at the funeral home and the church.

Russell George Robertson
May 7, 1922 -- June 26, 2009

Russell G. Robertson went to heaven to join his wife on Friday, June 26, 2009. He died after a short illness. Russell was born in Isabella County on May 7, 1922 to George William and Celia Jane (Wilson) Robertson. He lived his entire life in Isabella County.
Russell married Dorothy Swindlehurst on February 26, 1944 in Rosebush. They had been married for 56 years when she died on May 19, 2000. They had three children, Tad (Diane) Robertson of Mt. Pleasant, Jane (Dennis) Cornell of Barryton, and Tim (Patty) Robertson of Saginaw.
A celebration of Russells life was held on Tuesday, June 30, 2009 at 11:00 AM from the Helms Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with Rev. Jason Leininger and Rev. Nancy Casey Fulton officiating. Interment will took place next to his wife at Memorial Gardens in Mt. Pleasant. The family greeted friends on Monday, June 29, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm at Helms Funeral Home. Memorial contributions, in Russells memory, are suggested to the Rosebush Presbyterian Church, Central Michigan Free Methodist Church, or to Woodland Hospice
During his lifetime, Russell farmed and also held down a full time job. In the early years, he milked cows, then for many years, he raised registered Black Angus beef cattle, and finally he raised cash crops. He worked for over 30 years as a painter and insulator at the Total Leonard Refinery in Alma. He also worked at the old Harris Mill, Roosevelt Pipeline, and for the past 17 years, he worked at the Helms Funeral Home.
Russell had a unique sense of humor and quick wit. He was always joking around and making up nicknames for people. Russell could easily strike up a conversation with a stranger. He had a great memory and knew many people from the area. Russell will be remembered by many as the man who always said Merry Christmas year round.
Russell and Dorothy loved to dance and were very good at it. He could play the harmonica and the mandolin. Russell enjoyed hunting deer and rabbits, fishing, golfing, traveling, playing cards, and visiting. He often sang in church during his younger years. Russells favorite song was The Old Rugged Cross. His family was very important to him. Russell was very proud of the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren as they participated in sports.
Russell was a member of the Rosebush Presbyterian Church, a former member of the Moose, Odd Fellows, OCAW, and the Church Board. He served as a 4-H leader for horses and beef for over 10 years and he was the Co-Expo and Fair Manager for the Isabella County Fair Grounds for 3 and a half years.
Russell is survived by his three children and their spouses; six grandchildren, Chad (Dawn Jacobsma) Robertson of Grand Rapids, Eric (Kendra Bittell) Robertson of Southfield, Luke (Amanda) Cornell of Holland, Adam (Bethany Taylor) Cornell of Owosso, Heather (Rob) Wilkins of Breckenridge, and Ryan (Mindy) Robertson of Appleton, Wisconsin; six great grandchildren, Matthew, Erin, and Evan Wilkins, Jacob and Benjamin Robertson, and Macyn Kay Cornell; his in laws, Onalee Swindlehurst, Leona Sims, Genevieve Swindlehurst, Ann (Gary) Knapp, and Tom (Pat) Swindlehurst; several nieces and nephews; and a close friend and companion, Florence Emlinger of Mt. Pleasant. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; three sisters, Gladys Machuta, Reva Machuta, and Iva Krauss and their spouses; two nephews, Roger and Ned Machuta; his mother and father in law; and three brother in laws.

Phyllis Louise Wollangur Gibson
October 10, 1932 -- June 20, 2009

Phyllis Louise Wollangur (Gibson), age 76, of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, passed away on Saturday, June 20, 2009 at Woodland Hospice House, Mt. Pleasant.
Phyllis was born on Monday, October 10, 1932 in Mt. Pleasant to Tony and Virginia Wollangur (Lovell), but lived most of her life in the Lansing area. She was schooled in dentistry, but her love of people led her to hospitality for close to thirty years. When she returned to the medical field, it was, again, her heart that brought her to live-in care giving for the elderly.
Phyllis leaves behind her siblings, Rosemary Reid and Larry Lovell, daughter Regina Gibson Wagner, son-in-law, Jerry Wagner, granddaughter, Michelle Gibson, many loving nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great grandchildren, friends, and her greatly cherished Yorkshire terriers, Rascal and Scamp.
All who shared time with Phyllis are eternally thankful and will remember her lovingly.
Cremation has been provided courtesy of Helms Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant. There will be a memorial service for family and friends at a later date. Donations may be made in her name to Woodland Hospice House in Mt. Pleasant. Envelopes are available at the Helms Funeral Home, 330 S. University Ave., Mt. Pleasant, Michigan 48858.

Maria Jane Herman
April 5, 1915 - June 8, 2009

Maria Jane Herman, age 94, of Vero Beach, Florida passed away on Monday, June 8, 2009 at the Indian River Medical Center in Vero Beach, Florida. Maria was born on Saturday, April 3, 1915 in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, the daughter of Isaac and Lucy (Stevens) Pelcher. She married Robert E. Herman on March 4, 1966 in Detroit, Michigan.
Memorial services celebrating Marias life will be held on Tuesday, June 16, 2009 at 2 p.m. from the Helms Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with Rev. Owen White Pigeon of the Chippewa Indian United Methodist Church officiating. Interment of the cremated remains will take place in Riverside cemetery on the family lot. Friends may gather with the family on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions have been suggested to the family. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
Maria was a resident of Vero Beach since 1973, moving there from Detroit. She was a member of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe, and returned for many years for the annual Pow-Wow in August. She owned and operated her own salon where she was a hair and scalp specialist for many years. Maria was a graduate of the Indian School in Mt. Pleasant and a graduate of the Haskell Indian School in Kansas. She also enjoyed reading and her dogs.
Survivors include her husband, Robert Herman of Vero Beach; a sister, Dorothy Shawano of Mt. Pleasant; and many nieces and nephews, grand and great grand nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by both parents, brothers, John and Clinton, and sisters, Bernice and Viola.

Patricia Elaine Furtaw
November 24, 1925 - June 6, 2009

Patricia Elaine Furtaw, age 83 of Rapid City and formerly of Alma, Michigan, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, June 06, 2009 at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City, Michigan. Elaine was born on Tuesday, November 24, 1925 in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, the daughter of Alfred and Mildred E. (Ulam) Huber. She married Robert Furtaw on October 20, 1945 in St. Louis, Michigan.
A celebration of Elaine's life was held on Tuesday, June 9, 2009 at 11:00 am from the Helms Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with Pastor Samuel Reith of Zion Lutheran Church officiating. Following the funeral service, interment took place in Chapel Gardens cemetery, Elwell, Michigan beside her husband. Friends gathered with the family on Tuesday from 9:30 am until service time. Memorial contributions in Elaine's memory were suggested to the Grass River Nature Area in Bellaire, Michigan. Envelopes were available at the Helms Funeral Home, 330 S. University Ave., Mt. Pleasant, Michigan 48858.
Elaine was a resident of the Rapid City area for over twenty years, moving there from Alma, Michigan. She was the owner and operator of a gift and card shop in Alma for many years. She was a member of the Lutheran Church in Kalkaska for many years. Golfing, bowling, snowmobiling, ceramics, and going out to eat with her neighbors were some of her favorite past times.
Elaine is survived by her sister, Joyce Willis of Mt. Pleasant; children, Ronald Furtaw of Rapid City, MI, daughter, Patricia (Butch Lijewski) Jones of Manistee, MI, son, Timothy (Doris) Furtaw of Cannonsburg, MI, and son, Terry (Celia) Furtaw of Sault Ste Marie, MI; eight grandchildren; and six great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Robert; brother, Russell Huber; and sister, Jeanne Courtney

Pearl L. Guerrero
September 9, 1927 -- January 7, 2010

Pearl L. (Johnson) Guerrero, age 82, of Mt. Pleasant died Thursday, January 7, 2010 at Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo. Pearl was born on September 9, 1927 in Franklin, Maryland, the daughter of Michael J. and Pearl L. Jacobs Cavey.
Funeral services for Pearl were held on Tuesday, January 12, 2010 at 7:30 PM at the Helms Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with Mary Martinez officiating. Interment will be in the Riverside cemetery at a later date. The family greeted friends from 6:00 to 7:30 pm on Tuesday.
On May 24, 1958, Pearl and Thadis Johnson were married in Indiana. Mr. Johnson preceded her in death on Dec. 11, 1988. On May 18, 1995, Pearl married Pete Guerrero who preceded her in death in November of 2009. Pearl was a resident of Mt. Pleasant since 1993 moving here from Phoenix, AZ. She was a punch press operator for the Shakespere Co. and Bowers Ladder Company. Pearl was a member of the Eagles and the VFW Auxiliary.
Pearl is survived by her three children, Harold Winkleman, Jr. of Portage, Diane Stewart of Kentucky, and Joann Duncan of Kalamazoo; 8 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; and a brother, Bernard Cavey of Kalamazoo. She was preceded in death by her two husbands; a brother; a sister; and a grandson, Vincent Phillips.
