Elaine S. (Bajema) Pasma, age 75, of Dutton, was translated into the glorious presence of her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, September 28, 2016. She will be remembered for her quiet, gentle spirit, kindness, and thoughtfulness toward others. She served her Lord through her faithful devotion to her husband, children, and grandchildren. Even through her struggles with Parkinsons and Lewy Body Dementia, she graciously let her light shine. Elaine will be dearly missed by her husband of 55 years, Tom; her children, Deb (Rick) Steenstra, Dale (Ginger) Pasma, Darla (Kevin) Douma, Dean (Jenifer) Pasma; 22 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. The family expresses heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the dedicated staff at the Peace Harbor wing of Crystal Springs Assisted Living and the loving care of Spectrum Health Hospice. The funeral service will be held 11 am Tuesday, October 4, at Trinity United Reformed Church, 7350 Kalamazoo Ave. SE, with Rev. Brian Vos officiating. Interment in Winchester Cemetery. In honor of Elaine, contributions may be made to the Trinity URC New Hymnal Fund. The family will greet visitors on Monday from 2 - 4 and 6 - 8 pm at Stroo Funeral Home.

John Stuart Penning, 89, long-time owner of Penning Plumbing & Heating, joined his beloved wife Muriel (Micky) (Karsies) Penning and entered eternity on Friday, March 11, 2016. John was the loving father of Merrybeth Burkman (Tom), Richard (Rhonda), John (Shinny) and Jim Penning and Deborah Cook (Kevin). He was Grandpa to Jodie Barkel (Darryl), Kerri Reinbold (Chris), Sundown Kelley (Wes), Earlie Carraro (Matt), Eli (Ashley) Burkman, Bethany and Bryce Burkman, Chris (Debra) and Jeremy (Keri) Penning, Megan Kroll (Jason), Lyndsey, Gus, Elly and Katharine Penning, Matthew (Ashley) Cook, Jonathon, Stephen, Kyle and Lynley Cook and 19 great-grandchildren. John was preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law Olive and Gary Renkema, brother-in-law Roger Gritter and is survived by his sister Marge Gritter brothers Stu (Barbara) and Butch (Anne) Penning and a multitude of extended family and friends. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII. John was also a mentor to many in his church. A member of Grand Rapids First for the past 37 years, he was their first Father-of-the-Year and ministered to countless hurting souls. John’s humor, practical wisdom and firm opinions were always at the ready. Laughter was a legacy he left to those that loved him. Visitation with family members will be held on Saturday, March 19, from 2-3 p.m. and memorial service from 3-4 p.m., in the Prayer Chapel at Grand Rapids First, 2100 44th Street S.W. Following the service, a light lunch will be served by the Porch Café. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Sunset Manor Benevolent Fund would be appreciated.

SARVER - Daniel Lee Sarver, aged 87, of Caledonia went to be with the Lord on Saturday, April 2, 2016 at 10:30am. He was born June 8, 1928 in White Cloud, Michigan to Melvin and Rachel Sarver, who preceded him in death. His brothers, Junior and Russell, and sister Elizabeth also preceded him in death. He worked for 36 years as the fleet supervisor at Keller Trucking Company and Vice President of Capital Leasing Company. After he retired he enjoyed restoring antique vehicles and tractors, creating his own shop in Caledonia. He was always patient and kind, with a funny comment or story, or a piece of advice for his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 69 years and high school sweetheart, Beverly Jean Sarver; their three children, Ike (Susan) Sarver, Roger Sarver, Debra Alfonso; 10 grandchildren, Scott Sarver, Jill (Fritz) Gearhart, Karen Timmermans, Tony Alfonso, Alicia (Jeremy) Alfonso-Martin, Maria Alfonso, Andrea Alfonso, Rebecca Burbank, Jeremie (Kiki) Sarver Benz, Katie Benz; 13 great grandchildren; sister, Hazel "Lucy" Patterson; brother, Ben (Kay) Sarver; and sister-in-law, Alberta Sarver. Funeral services will be held 11:00 am Friday April 8, at Dutton United Reformed Church, 6950 Hanna Lake SE, Caledonia, MI 49316. Burial will follow at Holy Corners Cemetery on the corner of 84th Street and Kraft Ave. Contributions in Dan's memory can be made to Mel Trotter Ministries, www.meltrotter.org or Highway Melodies, www.hmiministries.org.

Donald E. VerHage, age 90, was called home to his Lord on Friday, March 11, 2016, and has taken hold of the life that is truly life. Don honorably served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II, and retired from Steelcase after 45 years of service. He was preceded in death by his wife, Janet, in 1984; one granddaughter; as well as five brothers and sisters and their spouses. Don will be lovingly remembered by his children, Keith and Cindy VerHage, Gary and Cathy VerHage, Janice and Mike VanKuiken; his grandchildren, Nichole (Chris) Erickson, Mitchell VerHage, Maria (Tim) Wiersma, Brittany VerHage, Benjamin (Lacey) VerHage, Holly VerHage, Renae Grappin, Anthony DeWitt, Ryan DeWitt, Zachary DeWitt; six great grandchildren; his brother, Vern VerHage; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Jack (Marlene) Hager, Shirley Sjoerdsma, John (Mick) Hager, Bob (Linda) Hager, Ann (Jim) Ashby, Ray Ezinga; many nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held 11:00 am Monday, March 14, at Trinity United Reformed Church, 7350 Kalamazoo Ave. SE, with Rev. Brian Vos officiating. Interment will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Mary Jane (Dutcher) Vanderwater, age 94, of Alto, went to her heavenly home on Thursday, March 10, 2016. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard "Curly" Vanderwater; and four brothers, Richard, Charles, James, and Darrell Washburn. A remarkable, loving woman, she will be dearly missed by her children, John (Diane) Dutcher, Charles (Pamela) Dutcher, Richard (Nancee) Dutcher, Robert (Maurianne) Dutcher; 16 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; 17 great great grandchildren; sister, Marguerite "Mickie" Caruso; her special family, Barb, Alan, and Laura Sieloff. A memorial service will be held 11 am Tuesday, March 22, at Gaines Church, 1612 92nd St. SE, with Rev. Kelly Burnside officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment has taken place in Cascade Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association. Rev. Edwin A. DuBois, Th.D., age 97, of the Grand Rapids area, was promoted to heaven on Thursday, March 10, 2016. His ministry began in June of 1936 and concluded in 1998 after pastoring churches in Saginaw, Detroit, Mt. Pleasant, and Good News Baptist Church of Grand Rapids, where he was emeritus. He also served as Director of Church Relations for seven years at what is now Cornerstone University. He is survived by his loving wife of 16 years, Bonnie K.; two daughters and their husbands, Bonnie and Larry Schwartzkopf, Ruth and Verne Rietman; four grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; step-children, Mark (Sue), Jeff (Toni), Kurt (Debi) VanSingel; 10 step-grandchildren; six step-great grandchildren; his brother, George DuBois; his sister, Eleanor Hamilton; several nieces and nephews, and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 61 years, Bonnie Mae; and four sisters, Virginia Pawley, Gertrude Rose, Faith Berry, and Evelyn Geho. Funeral services will be held 11:00 am Monday, March 14, at Good News Baptist Church, 6830 Eastern Ave. SE, with Rev. Brian Cedarquist officiating. Entombment will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Good News Baptist Church Building Fund.

Dale H. Luikes, age 61, entered into the arms of the Lord and was reunited with his family in heaven on Friday, March 11, 2016. Dale worked for Cummins Bridgeway for the past 15 years. He was an avid corvette enthusiast, and enjoyed spending time with and picking on his grandkids. His father, Henry Luikes, preceded him in death in 1995. Dale will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Judith; mother, Matilda; children, Kimberly (Isaac) Yarrington, Cindra (Derk) Zwart, Jeff Herweyer, Jason (Samantha) Luikes; 18 grandchildren; brother, Keith Luikes; four nieces and their families; and his aunt, Helen Freyling. Visitation will be held on Saturday, March 19, from 1 - 3 pm at Stroo Funeral Home, where the funeral service will begin at 3 pm, with Rev. James Kralt officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to either Faith Hospice or the American Cancer Society.

Lloyd W. Osterink, age 64, of Cutlerville, passed away unexpectedly Friday, April 1, 2016. "The Lord is my light and my salvation-whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life-of whom shall I be afraid?" Psalm 27:1. Lloyd was known for his strong and unshakable faith, and is now resting securely in the arms of his Savior. He served in the U.S. Army and was the owner of O & M Construction. He found great joy in serving the Lord at his church and in mission work throughout the world. Preceding him in death are his parents, Lloyd and Elizabeth; his parents-in-law, Robert and Greta Van Noord; and his precious granddaughters, Eleanor and Hannah Vedra. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 40 years, Crystal; his children, Jeff Osterink, Emily and Adam Vedra, Julie and John Vander Molen; grandchildren, Gwen, Moses, Reed, Grace Osterink, Noah and Seth Vedra; sisters and brother, Marilyn and Donald Brunsting, Charlene and Bruce Horling, Carol and Keith Umbarger, Steven and Marijo Osterink; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Robert and Laura Van Noord, Mary and James Meiste, Steve and Kristi Van Noord; many nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held 11 am Tuesday, April 5, at Providence Christian Reformed Church, 7730 Eastern Ave SE, with Pastor Bob Boersma officiating. Interment in Blain Cemetery. Contributions in memory of Lloyd may be made to Providence CRC Members Mission Fund.
