Carol Jean Pleiness Nemecheck

Carol Jean Pleiness Nemechek, 83, passed away on Friday, Sept. 29, 2006. She was the beloved wife of the late Harold Roy Nemecheck Sr. She is survived by one son and three daughters, seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren, one sister, and nieces and nephews. She was the daughter of the late Fern Olds Pleiness and Walter Pleiness. She lived in Metairie, La., since 1961, but spent her childhood summers with both sets of grandparents in Riverton Twp.

A donation in her name may be made to Lakeshore Animal Friends.

Judy Kay Kadzban

Judy Kay Kadzban, 59, of Ludington, formerly of Manistee, died Saturday, Oct. 7, 2006 at Birchwood Nursing Home in Traverse City, after a hard battle with cancer.

She was born in Manistee, on Jan. 8, 1947 and attended Manistee High School graduating with the class of 1965. She was employed at Wal-Mart of Ludington.

She is survived by her aunt, Ruth Schultz; cousins, Cathy Kelley, Mavis Densmore and their families and also several close friends and neighbors.

Judy was preceded in death by her mother and stepfather, Dorothy and Sylvester Grabowski; her father, Clarence Peterson and a brother Leon Grabowski.

According to Judy’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a private graveside service will be held at Mount Carmel Cemetery of Manistee.

The Herbert Funeral Home of Manistee is in charge of funeral arrangements.

Kenneth E. Quick

Kenneth E. Quick, 68, of Custer, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 14, 2006 at his home. Ken was born on Oct. 19, 1937 in Custer to Allen and Evelyn (Ager) Quick, and attended Custer Schools. He was employed by Motyka Metal Products, Carrom Company, Savage Company, and retired from Harsco Track Technologies in 2000 after working 35 years as a machinist. He married Shirley Kieft on May 25, 1973 at the Bachelor Church in Fountain, and she preceded him in death on Sept. 28, 1995. On Sept. 4, 2006 he married Audrey (Christensen) McDonald at their home, and she survives him.

Ken enjoyed hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, restoring his Farmall tractors, traveling and camping all over the United States, and participated in the Labor Day Bridge Walk every year until his health no longer permitted him. He attended festivals all over the state, and was one of the founders of Suckerfest. Ken was also preceded in death by his parents, one grandchild, and his brothers-in-law Ralph Christensen and Earl Langefeldt. He will be greatly missed by his wife Audrey; his children Jim (Dawn) Quick of Custer, Dean (Laura) Quick of Scottville, Rodney Quick of Edwardsburg, Cheryl (Dan) Gage of Fountain, Mike Mahoney of Lincoln, Neb., Roxanne (Cal) Vega of Manistee, Robert (Patti) Mahoney of Whitehall, and Lynne Spyker of Manistee; his stepchildren Marvin (Mary) McDonald of Pentwater, Julie (Dan) Nieboer of Walkerville, Joyce Sorensen of Ludington, Aage (Nita) McDonald of Custer, and Kim (Jason) Compeau of Ludington; 24 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; his brother Allen (Wilma) Quick of Ludington; his sisters Doreen Langefeldt of Custer and Carol Quick of Frankfort; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Arlene Christensen of Ludington, Nedra (Robert) Haupt, Nels (Sandy) Christensen, Pete (Jackie) Christensen, and Lance (Marge Carlson) Christensen all of Scottville; many nieces, nephews, and great friends.

A Celebration of Life service will be held for Ken at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 18 at the Stephens Life Story Funeral Home in Scottville, with the Rev. Norm Letsinger of Bachelor Evangelical Covenant Church officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Custer. Friends may meet with his family for a time of visitation on Tuesday evening from 6-9 p.m. and on Wednesday from noon until time of services at the funeral home. Helen M. Carlson

Helen M. Carlson, 76, of 310 N. Washington Ave., Ludington, died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2006 at Memorial Medical Center after an extended illness.

Helen Mae Huttunen was born May 9, 1930 in Duluth, Minn., to Otto and Mandi Huttunen. After her father’s death when she was six, she attended 28 different schools over the next eight years as she and her mother moved often on the West Coast. After moving back to Duluth in 1945 to live with her older sister Elma, she completed high school at Duluth Central, graduating as valedictorian in 1948. She received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education in 1952 from the University of Minnesota-Duluth (UMD) and during the next few years taught fourth grade in Minneapolis, Minn., and second grade in Midland Mich.

On Sept. 29, 1950 she married Allan M. Carlson, a fellow graduate of Duluth Central and UMD, and he survives.

For the past 50 years Helen has been an active member of United Methodist Churches in Midland and Ludington, Berea, Ohio and Ashland, Ky., being involved in Sunday School for children, youth and adults; in the United Methodist Women; on the Missions Committee and as a strong advocate for peace, justice and environmental issues. She has also served as our church librarian.

Over the years she has also been involved in various community groups wherever the family has lived. In Ludington she served for eight years on the Mason County Mental Health Board, for many years on the Salvation Army Board, was parent coordinator at the Franklin School Library, and was teacher of 3 and 4 year olds for five years in a cooperative nursery school that met at Emanuel Lutheran Church. While in Berea, Ohio, she was on the Board of the Methodist Children’s Home of Berea and while living in Ashland, Ky., she served for five years on the Board of the Hillcrest-Bruce United Methodist Ministries that served various needs of people living in the Hillcrest-Bruce public housing project. She was currently involved as member and secretary of the West Shore Scandinavian Society.

Helen will be missed and lovingly remembered by her many friends and her husband of 56 years, Allan; her daughters, Karen Byerley of Niles and Kristine Witt of Berea, Ohio; her son, Eric (Cammie) Carlson of St. Louis, Mo.; six grandchildren, Amy (Jonathan) Wagner, Emma Carlson, Phoebe Carlson, Maya Witt, Theo Witt and Maria Witt; nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Elma Petaja; and a son-in-law, Phillip Witt.

A Celebration of Life Service for Helen M. Carlson will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 21, at the United Methodist Church of Ludington, 107 South Harrison St., with the Rev. Kenneth Tabor officiating. Visitation with the family will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and a luncheon will be served in Fellowship Hall following the service.

Those wishing to make an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the United Methodist Church of Ludington Building Fund or a charity of their choice.

Ruby Irene Frye

Ruby Irene Frye, 80, of Ludington, died on Sunday, Oct. 8, 2006.

Oak Grove Funeral Home and Cremation Center of Ludington is in charge of arrangements.

Francis Mast

Mr. Francis Mast, 81, died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2006. He was born in Hart on Oct. 10, 1924 to Frank and Hattie (Wright) Mast. Mr. Mast married the former Ilene Blanchette on June 12, 1948 at St. Jean’s Catholic Church in Muskegon. He was employed as a machinist at Teledyne Continental Motors for forty years, until his retirement in January 1987. Francis served his country during W.W. II with the 8th Air Force. His interests included hunting, fishing and gardening.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Ilene; their children, Linda (Dave) Riggs of White Cloud, Nancy (Rick) Deering of Northport, Frank Mast of Port Orange, Fla., Dr. Alan (Karen) Mast of Ludington, Ruth (Kent) Eilers of Grand Rapids; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; his brothers and sisters, Ella Mae Taylor of Scottville, Hazel Marie Burd of Florida, Edna Mary Harlow of Scottville, William Stanley Mast of Hart.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, John, Henry, Paul and Robert Mast; one sister, Helen Rudis.

A private Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Saturday, Oct. 14 from St. Gregory’s Catholic Church, with the Rev. Ron Schneider presiding. Interment will be in the Hart Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to the Heart Association.

Tate-King Funeral Home, Hart, is in charge of arrangements.

Michele Kneidl

Michele Kneidl, 31, of Manistee died October 11, 2006.

The Herbert Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Edward C. Rose

Edward C. Rose, 85, of Chicago, and a summer resident of Ludington, died Monday, Aug. 14 at Memorial Medical Center.

Edward Charles was born March 4, 1921 in Chicago, the son of Edward John and Clara (Pieler) Rose. He and his family began coming to Ludington in the summers when Edward was a small child.

Edward was married on Sept. 6, 1947 in Chicago to Elaine C. Larsen and she survives.

He was an engineer and owned and operated his own business. Locally he was a member of the Pentwater Service Club, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Pentwater Yacht Club, Lincoln Hills Golf Club and the Elks. He and his wife attended Centenary United Methodist Church in Pentwater.

In addition to his wife, Elaine, he is survived by three sons, Edward (Ellen) Rose, Douglas Rose, Gary Rose; one daughter, Nancy Rose; four grandchildren, Royce Rose, Rachael Rose, Alexander Rose and Savannah Rose.

Funeral Services for Edward C. Rose will be held in the Oak Brook, Ill. area.

Those wishing to make a memorial contribution are asked to consider Centenary United Methodist Church. Envelopes are available at the Dorrell Funeral Home which is assisting the family locally.

Duane Ivan McCumber

The family of Duane Ivan McCumber is profoundly saddened by his death on Saturday, Aug. 12. He will be sorely missed by his devoted wife Amy and his children Marc Edward and Erika Jean. Duane, affectionately known as “Dude, ” fought a short but valiant battle with cancer, spending his final days at the Munson Hospice Home in Traverse City. Duane is the son of Duane H “Doc” and Jean “Skip” McCumber of Fountain, and of Beverly Kelly of Ludington.

Following his graduation from Mason County Eastern High School in 1989, Duane enlisted in the United States Army, and was sent to the Army field artillery training center at Fort Sill, Okla. He was then stationed at Fort Bragg, N. C., and during Desert Storm, his unit was deployed to Kuwait, where he served with the 3rd Infantry Division. On June 10, 2000, he married Amy Marek at the United Methodist Church in Ludington, and was currently employed at Brittin Media in Traverse City, where he and his family have resided for the past 3 years. Dude’s enthusiasm for life was evident in his love of the outdoors. He enjoyed bike rides with his wife and children, riding his motorcycle, snowmobiling, water craft, fishing, and hunting with his dad and step mom. His passion however, was for NASCAR racing, and a very proud moment for him was meeting and being photographed with Dale Earnhardt Sr. in 1998.

Duane was preceded in death by his grandfathers Robert McCumber and Willis “Jim” Silvis; his stepsister Dawn Schrink; and his Uncle Ivan Silvis.

Along with his wife, children, and parents, he will be greatly missed by his brother Glenn McCumber and son Keri Hurst; his sister and brother-in-law Julie and Patrick McGilvray, and their daughter Lauren; his stepbrothers George, Robert, and Geoffrey Schrink; his maternal grandmother Nioma Silvis; his paternal grandmother Leona McCumber; his mother and father-in-law John and Pam Marek; his sister-in-law and her husband Annette and Bob Purple and their daughter Hailey, and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

A Celebration of Life service will be held for Duane at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 25 at the Bachelor Evangelical Covenant Church in Fountain, with the Rev. Phil Douglass of Peninsula Bible Church in Traverse City, and the Rev. Norm Letsinger of Bachelor Evangelical Covenant Church officiating. Burial will take place with Honor Guard rites at McCumber Cemetery. Friends may meet with Dude’s family for a time of visitation on Thursday evening, Aug. 24 from 6-9 p.m. at the Stephens Life Story Funeral Home in Scottville. Those who wish, may make memorial contributions to an Educational Fund for his Children, c/o Amy McCumber, or to the Munson Hospice Home, 1105 6th Street, Traverse City, MI 49684.
