Antoinette 'Toni' Przybylo, 90

RIVERVIEW, Mich. - Former Cheboygan resident Antoinette "Toni" (Modrak) Przybylo passed away on Friday, April 30, 2004, at the Rivergate Terrace Nursing Home in Riverview, Mich., where she was a patient for three weeks.

Toni was born in a log cabin on 80 acres in Munro Township on Oct. 13, 1913, to Martin and Rosalia (Skiera) Modrak.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jacob Przybylo. She also was preceded in death by her first husband, Ralph Woods, and her second husband, Theador Schave; her parents, Martin and Rosalia Modrak; four small Modrak children; and brother Alexsander (Frances) Modrak and Cyril (Eleanor) Modrak.

Toni is survived by her sister, Wanda Dauzet; brothers Frederick (Eda), Thaddeus (Fairbelle) and Conrad; Przybylo stepchildren Cecila, Veronica, Lucille, Leonard, Henery, James and Tony; and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Toni, at an early age, worked at the cigar factory, then for several years at the garment factory with approximately 200 employees in Cheboygan in the early 1930s.

Working at the garment factory, an all-women's softball team was formed and played at home and several surrounding towns. You might say this was the first women's softball team in Cheboygan. Toni was a catcher.

As life went on, Toni moved to Detroit and worked at other jobs, ending up at another garment factory, where she was the floor lady for many years.

Toni's delight in life was the outdoors. She spent many hours of enjoyment tending God's flowers, bushes, trees and a small garden, as well as many potted flowers. The other delight and accomplishment of which Antoinette was very proud was to have graduated from Southgate High School at the age of 80, not being able to go early because of certain circumstances at the time.

Antoinette, or Toni, will be missed by her families, friends, nieces, nephews and grandchildren. Thank you, God and Toni, for your life.

The Mass of resurrection took place at 9:30 a.m. Monday, May 3, 2004, at St. Pius X Parish, 14101 Superior, Southgate, with select songs performed by stepson Ted Schave and his two daughters. The John Malnar Funeral Home in Southgate was in charge of arrangements.

Arlene I. Allen, 87

SAGINAW, Mich. - Arlene I. Allen, 87, of Saginaw, Mich., formerly of Cheboygan, passed away on Tuesday, May 4, 2004, following a short illness.

The gift of Arlene Inez Brooks to this world began on Nov. 28, 1916, in Boyne City, Mich. The daughter of a blacksmith, Arlene spent countless hours beside her father, Fern, while he shaped and forged iron in his shop.

When not busy in her father's blacksmith shop, Arlene and her only sibling, Dorothy, were undoubtedly helping their mother, Nellie, with the daily chores of cooking and cleaning the house. Instilled at an early age, Arlene had a work ethic that was unmatched, until she met Larry Allen, that is. She married Larry on Dec. 24, 1940. They shared 55 incredible years together, and were blessed with three healthy children. Larry predeceased her on Feb. 3, 1995. Arlene was a 1935 graduate of Boyne City High School.

Surviving are her children, Betty Lou Thom of Alpena, Elaine Yvonne (Tom) Ochodnicky of Saginaw, and Jerry Robert (Sandy) Allen of Columbus, Ohio; five grandchildren, Mark Forreider of Novi, Mich., Lisa Shanley of Lawton, Mich., Lori Penndorf of South Lyon, Mich., Jean Owens of Saginaw and Stacey LeFevre of Galloway, Ohio; five great-grandchildren, Cody, Brian, Adam, Autumn and Kierstin.

Arlene was first and foremost a wife and mother, but also took pride in her work as the Emmet County Register of Deeds for 11 years. After a move in 1965 from Petoskey to Cheboygan, Larry and Arlene built their dream home on the Cheboygan River, where they would live out their lives together. Their home on Sharill Lane in Cheboygan proved to be the stuff "up north" memories are made of ... fishing off the end of the dock at sunset, grandkids swimming in the river, barbecues, boat rides in the Chris-Craft, lawn chairs lined up on the front porch, and always Arlene's famous homemade macaroni 'n' cheese in the oven. Whether she was making a dozen pies from scratch for a Thanksgiving feast, playing cards with lifelong friends or taking her grandkids to the dime store, she lived to serve others. Shaping and touching the lives of family and friends was not something Arlene did after everything was done; it came first.

Friends and family ware welcome to call from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, May 7, 2004, at the Reitz Herzberg Funeral Home on South Midland Road (M-47) in Saginaw. Visitation will also take place from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, May 8, 2004, at Grace Lutheran Church, 4690 Tittabawassee Road, Saginaw, where funeral and committal service will occur at 11 a.m. Saturday, with the Rev. David Birnbaum officiating. Interment will take place in Harbor Springs.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial offering to Grace Lutheran Church or VNA Hospice.
