Helen E. Flury

Helen E. Flury, 87, of Bellaire, died Sun., April 29, 2001, at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility. She was born Dec. 23, 1913 in Cleveland, Ohio, the daughter of Alex and Anna (Kalman) Torok. She lived much of her life in the Detroit area, moving to Bellaire in 1999. During her early years, her very full life encompassed being an accomplished violinist and dancer, performing in major vaudeville theaters. Later she became a cook for the city of Detroit's (then) Camp Brighten and later at the Sigman Chi fraternity house at the University of Michigan. Surviving are sons Jim (Clair) Scheibner of Lufkin, Texas and Gerald Scheibner of Winter Haven, Fla.; sister Violet (Rich) Mahanes of Ocala, Fla.; granddaughters Julie and Karen; and nieces and nephews Charlene, Laura, Lisa, Rick and Robert. A memorial service will be at a later date. Because the Bellaire Senior Center family meant so much to Helen, it is suggested that memorials be directed to that organization. Arrangements are being handled by the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.

Carl M. Hileman

Carl M. Hileman, 71, Westerville, Mon., March 26, 2001, Riverside Hospital. Retired Industrial Engineer. Preceded in death by brother Barr Hileman and sister Ellen Hildreth. survived by wife Dolores "Dee"; children Leslie (Stephen) Pease, and David (Melinda) Hileman; grandchildren Miranda, Annika, John and Robert; brother Jack (Mary) Hileman and other relatives and friends. Member and treasurer of St. John's Episcopal Church, Kappa Sigma Fraternity. Graduate of the Ohio State University. Life member Alumni Association, ALLE, past president of his condo association. Memorial service were 11 a.m. Fri., March 30 at St. John's Episcopal Church, 700 High St., Worthington, Ohio 43085; the Rev. Arthur Hadley and the Rev. Nancy Stanton officiated. Reception followed the service. Omission of flowers requested. Contributions may be made to St. John's Episcopal Church Memorial Fund or Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservacy, Attn: Loon Nursery Preserve, 3860 N. Long Lake Rd., Suite D, Traverse City, MI 49684. Arrangements were made by Rutherford-Corbin Funeral Home, Worthington Chapel, 515 High St., Worthington, OH 43085.

Ralph Alan Hoyt

Ralph Alan Hoyt, 73, of Elk Rapids, formerly of Jackson, Michigan City, Ind., and Yardley, Penn., died May 6, 2001 at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. He was born in Jackson Nov. 24, 1927, the son of J. Burnett and Emma (Spindlemann) Hoyt. He married the former Ruth Terrilyn Briggs March 28, 1959 in Jackson. Ralph was a mechanical engineer. He was employed by Acme Industries of Jackson; DeLaval Turbine Company of Trenton, N.J.; Joy Manufacturing Company of Michigan City, Ind., Flemington, N.J. and Morrisville, Penn., retiring in 1992. Ralph graduated from Jackson Community College in 1949 and Purdue University in 1951. He served in the United States Army during World War II with the Japanese Occupation Forces. He enjoyed woodworking, traveling, golfing and fishing. He is survived by his wife, Ruth B. Hoyt of Elk Rapids; son and daughter-in-law Christopher and Deborah Hoyt of Raleigh, N.C.; and sister Jeannette Hatt of Jackson. He was preceded in death by his parents J. Burnett and Emma Hoyt of Jackson; son Gregory A. Hoyt of Elk Rapids; and brother Marvin B. Hoyt of Fremont. Graveside services will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at Deepdale Memorial Park, 4110 Waverly Rd., Lansing, Mich. The Rev. Dr. Daniel Herlein, Senior Pastor at First Presbyterian Church in Elk Rapids will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Jackson Community College Foundation, 2111 Emmons Rd., Jackson, MI 49201 9976. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.

Charles H. Lloyd Jr.

Charles H. "Grizz" Lloyd Jr., of Rapid City, died Sun., May 6, 2001, at Kalkaska Memorial Health Center. He was 74. Mr. Lloyd resided in Parma until 16 years ago when he moved to Kalkaska County. A sales representative for Procter & Gamble, he retired after 31 years of service. He served in the Navy during World War II, and was a member of the VFW in Lincoln Park. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and shuffleboard. He was born in River Rouge on June 14, 1926, to Charles H. and Rhea (Pilon) Lloyd. On Oct. 2, 1971, he married Linda Burns. She survives. In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughters Renee Beeler of Kalkaska and Stephanie Cox of Biloxi, Miss.; his mother Rhea Lloyd of Florida; brothers George of Fowlerville and Ronald of Flat Rock; sister Dolores Caldwell of Florida; and grandchildren Eric, Corinna, Jason, Angela, Nicole, Cortney, Shelby and Derrik. Memorial services were held May 9, 2001, at the home of Renee Beeler. Rev. Ken Doss officiated. Arrangements were made by Wolfe Funeral Home, Kalkaska.

Rev. Francis L. Mason

The Rev. Francis L. Mason, 82, of East Jordan and formerly of Charlevoix, died, Fri., May 4, 2001, at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey. Francis was born on Oct. 18, 1918, in Boyne City, the son of Benjamin C. and Nita Bell (Keech) Mason. He was raised in the Charlevoix area. From 1941 to 1944 Francis served as a Staff Sargent with the United States Army Air Corps in the South West Pacific Theater. On July 18, 1944, he married Claribel McAllister in Charlevoix. The couple moved to Grand Haven where Francis worked as a wood finisher with Story & Clark Piano Co. for 19 years. He then worked for Howard Miller Clock in Zeeland until his retirement in 1981. Following his retirement the couple moved to East Jordan. His love was pioneering churches in Michigan. He was extremely proud to have overseen the beginning of seven church, the last one being Faith Harbor Ministries in Mancelona. Francis and his wife also devoted a big part of their life to working with 37 foster children over the years. He was a member of Faith Harbor Ministries in Mancelona since 1990 and enjoyed woodworking in his shop. Survivors include his wife Claribel; sons Raymond A. (Colleen), of Ellsworth, Joseph L., of East Jordan, and Larry R. (Cheryl) of Grand Rapids; daughters Grace Ann (Larry) Lawrence, of Sparta, Frances L. Mason, of East Jordan, Ruth (John) Gardner, of Muskegon, Sharon L. (Norman) Smith and Mary Lynn Mason, both of East Jordan; 17 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and brother Harry (Lottie) of Muskegon. He was preceded in death by daughter Laura; brothers Vercil, Cecil, Dick and Jerry; and sisters Lucille, Mildred, Reva, and Betty. Funeral service was 2 p.m. Mon., May 7 at the Assembly of God Church in Charlevoix. The Rev. Gary Mullendore of the Victory Tabernacle Church in Goodrich, officiated. Burial was in Antrim City cemetery, Banks Township. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Envelopes are available at the assembly of God Church where friends may call from 2-4 p.m., on Sun., May 6. Arrangements were handled by the Winchester Funeral Home in Charlevoix.

Karl Einar Nelson

Karl Einar Nelson, 94, of Bellaire and Leesburg, Fla., died Fri., April 27, 2001, at Lady Lake Specialty Care Home in Lady Lake, Fla. He was born Feb. 23, 1907 in Gotteburg, Sweden, the son of Emil and Mattelin Nielson. He retired after many years in the building trade as a finish carpenter. He was preceded in death by his first wife Ellen (Senbom) in 1954. On Nov. 22, 1958, in Detroit, he married Alma (Uefring) Hanson who died in 1995. Also preceding him in death was son George Hanson in 1983. Surviving are son Lennard (Olla) Nelson of Kalix, Sweden; daughter Agnes "Mickey" (Wally) Cressy of Bellaire and Leesburg; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A graveside memorial service will be 11 a.m., Sat., July 7 at Lakeview cemetery, Bellaire. Arrangements are being handled by Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.

Inez Robbins

Inez Robbins, 81, of Mancelona went to be with her Lord and two precious daughters, on Tues., May 1, 2001. She was born on Sept. 25, 1919, in Powel, Ky. Inez Baber married John Robbins in Mancelona in 1944. She worked as a nurse's aide at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility in Bellaire for numerous years. She was a member of the Antrim Church of Christ in Mancelona. She enjoyed reading and camping. Her greatest joy came from her grandchildren and especially her "babies," Alex, Makayla, Hannah, and Matthew, her great-grandchildren. Inez is survived by her husband John Robbins of Mancelona; children Len (Wanda) Robbins of Berrien Springs, Roy (Phyllis) Baber of Buchanan, Sandy Keller of Coruna, Kay (Ted) Justice of Grand Rapids; son-in-law Emory Howes of Mancelona; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and brother Day (Jean) Baber of Buchanan. She was preceded in death by daughters Alice Howes and Phyllis Underwood; her parents; two brothers; and one sister. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Penzien Funeral Homes, Inc. in Mancelona. Memorials may be given to Antrim Church of Christ in Mancelona. Funeral services were Thurs., May 3 at 1:00 p.m. at the Antrim Church of Christ in Mancelona. Internment was in Fairview cemetery in Mancelona.

Irene A. Streeter Sharp

Irene A. Streeter Sharp, 85, died April 30, 2001 at her home in Midland. She was born April 14, 1916 in Montmorency County, Mich., the daughter of Henry and Blanche (Frank) Crall. She moved to Midland in 1931 and graduated from Midland High School in 1934. In August of 1934, she married Donald J. Streeter, who passed away Jan. 1, 1967 She then married Clarence G. Sharp in 1976. He passed away Dec. 14, 1992. Irene was manager of the Katherine Stevens Shop in Midland for six years. After their marriage, they moved to Elk Lake. In 1989, they returned to Midland. Surviving Irene are her children and their spouses James D. and Elizabeth "Liz" Streeter of Lee's Summit, Mo.; and Rebecca Ann and Ken Ropp of Annapolis, Md.; stepchildren and their spouses Stephen and Gale Sharp of Auburn and Donna and Lanny Fick of Breckenridge; seven grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and sister Alice Fullerton of Pendleton, Ore. She was preceded in death by three sisters and three brothers. Services were May 4 at the Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Chapel in Midland. The Rev. Dr. Charles W. Keyworth of the First United Methodist Church officiated. Burial and committal services took place May 7 in the Fort Custer National cemetery, Augusta, Mich., with Rev. Ron L. Keller officiating. Those planning an expression of symphony may wish to consider Mid-Michigan Hospice or The Salvation Army.

Sonia F. Vanniman

Sonia F. Vanniman, 45, of Ellsworth, died Mon., May 7, 2001, at her home. She was born in Charlevoix on Nov. 9, 1955, the daughter of Seblo and Deloray Fay (Strange) DeVries. On April 11, 1975, she married Jack Vanniman in Ellsworth where they have lived since marriage. Sonia did clerical work in the Physical Therapy Department at Charlevoix Area Hospital for 17 years. She attended the Ellsworth Wesleyan Church. She enjoyed walking with friends, being with family and friends, caring for others, cooking, baking and collecting small stuffed animals. Surviving are her husband Jack; sons Neil (Jennifer) Vanniman of Brighton, and Carl Vanniman at home; her father Seblo DeVries of Ellsworth; brother Roy (Marilyn) DeVries of Eldred, Pa.; and sister Marcia (Daniel) Mort of Clarksville, Tenn. She was preceded in death by her mother Deloray Fay DeVries in 1999. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thurs., May 10 at the Ellsworth Wesleyan Church; the Rev. Dale Kessler and the Rev. Chris Wallace officiating. Burial will be in Atwood cemetery. Friends may call Hastings Funeral Home in Ellsworth from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday. Memorial contributions may be made to Charlevoix Area Hospital or Charlevoix County Hospice.

Evelyn M. Way

Evelyn M. Way, 70, of Rapid City, died May 3, 2001. She was born in Rapid City April 8, 1931, the daughter of Leo Bussa and Mae Gross-Bussa-Fitzpatrick. She married Neil Way in Elk Rapids Dec. 28, 1948; he preceded her in death in 1993. Evelyn was a homemaker. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Elk Rapids. She was also active in Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts for many years. Evelyn enjoyed arts and crafts and baking. She is survived by her mother Mae Fitzpatrick; children Cathleen (Kenneth) Sternaman of Traverse City, Gwen (Jim) Mason of Kalkaska, Christine (John) Dykhuis of Rapid City, Teresa Galligan of Rapid City, Janet (Joe) Parry of Waterford, Barbara Barber of Rapid City, Daniel (Margaret) Way of Rapid City, Cindy (Dale) Schaaf of Peru, Ind.; and Donald (Shellie) Way of Rapid City; brothers Leo Bussa of Rapid City and Elton Bussa of Kentwood; sister Marie Veliquette of Elk Rapids; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by 18 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her father Leo Bussa and brothers Edmond and Loyd Bussa. Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals was celebrated May 7, with Rev. Robert J. Zuchowski as celebrant. Interment will be in the Milton Township cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Sacred Heart Building Fund. Arrangements were entrusted to the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.

Bertha R. Hansen

Bertha Ruth Hansen of Kalkaska passed away at home on July 22, 2001. She was 96. Mrs. Hansen was born in Defiance County, Sherwood, Ohio on Aug. 8, 1904, the daughter of Winfield Scott and Achsah Leeanna Ames. She had been a resident of Kalkaska since 1906. She married Arthur Edward Hansen on July 2, 1923 at her parents' home. He preceded her in death Jan. 30, 1998. She was a member of the Kalkaska United Methodist Church, Rebeckah Lodge and a past Grand Matriarch of the Grand Ladies Auxiliary 1.0.0.2., of Michigan. Surviving are a daughter, Dorothy L. Darke of Muskegon; a son Winfield (Iris) Hansen of Kalkaska; daughters-in-law Susannah Hansen and Phyllis Hansen, both of Kalkaska; 11 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great grandchildren. Two sons, Alfred C. and John C. preceded her in death. Funeral services were held Wed., July 25, at 11 a.m. at Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska. Reverend David McCool officiated. Burial was in Evergreen cemetery in Kalkaska. Her great-grandsons were pallbearers. Memorial contributions may be made to Munson Hospice.
