Tony Rohde
Tony Rohde, 45, of Mancelona died Thursday, Dec. 22, 2005 at his home.
He was born on Aug. 30, 1960 in Kalkaska, the son of Walter "Wink" and Sandra (St. John) Rohde.
He was a resident of Mancelona his whole life and enjoyed fishing.
He is survived by his mother, Sandra Rohde of Mancelona, two brothers, Scott and Doug Rohde, two sisters, Mikecallyn Rohde and Carrie Tyson, all of Mancelona, and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father Walter "Wink" Rohde in 2004.
Funeral services were held on Dec. 24 at the Mancelona Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. The Rev. Ross Corne officiated.
Interment will take place in Coldsprings Township cemetery in the spring of 2006.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Jane Bayer Ward
Jane Bayer Ward, 87, of Toledo died Thursday, Feb. 9, 2006.
She was born on June 14, 1918, in Toledo to Edward and Lillian Bayer.
She attended DeVilbiss High School and graduated from Cornell University with a bachelor of science degree from the College of Agriculture. At Cornell she joined the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and was a life-long member.
In Toledo, she was a member of the Toledo Museum of Art where she served as an aide and docent. She was also a board member of Crosby Gardens (now the Toledo Botanical Gardens), the Toledo Day Nursery, and she worked for Mobile Meals. A 50year member of Inverness Country Club, she was also a long-time member of St. Michael's in the Hills Episcopal Church in Toledo.
She and her husband, George F. Ward (deceased), were cottagers on Lake Bellaire for many years and were avid local golfers, fishermen and supporters of the Grass River Natural Area as well as the Three Lakes Association enjoying many decades'-long friendships in the area.
Surviving are daughters Susan Bayer Ward of Evanston, IL, and Judy (Tom) Bayer of Rockford; her son, George C. (Terri) Ward of Toledo, and four grandchildren.
Memorials may be offered to Sunset House, 4020 Indian Rd., Toledo, OH 43606; or St. Michael's in the Hills Episcopal Church, 4718 Brittany Rd., Toledo, OH 43615.

Wava Hale
Wava I. Hale, 89, of Bellaire died Friday, Feb. 24, 2006 at Kalkaska Memorial Health Center.
She was born in Mecosta County on Aug. 12, 1916, the daughter of Emmette and Edna L. (Erbes) Pratt. On May 28, 1947, in Wyandotte, she married Jack Hale who preceded her in death.
Wava retired from General Motors Corp. in Lansing after many years of service. She moved to Bellaire in 1993, coming from Albuquerque. She was a member of the Rapid City Church of Christ.
In her younger years Wava delighted in going for rides in different directions and seeing new things. Lately, she enjoyed reading, watching NASCAR races, working jigsaw puzzles and particularly enjoyed watching sunsets.
Wava is survived by her son, Lonne (CaSandra) Hill of Bellaire; sister, Ollie Eaton of Big Rapids; one grandson and several step-grandchildren; one great-grandson and many stepgreat-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death, along with her husband Jack, were her parents, brothers Deloss, Orrie and Don Pratt and a sister, Elaine Hill.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, March 4 at the Mancelona Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes with the Rev. Leonard Hill officiating assisted by Jousef Jabara. The family will greet relatives and friends for one hour prior to the service.

Margaret Wheeler
Margaret J. Wheeler, 74, of Alden died early Saturday morning, Feb. 25, 2006 at Kalkaska Memorial Health Center Long Term Care.
Born Jan. 11, 1932 in Petoskey, she was the daughter of Robert and Emma (Tosier) Allan. Margaret married Roger L. Wheeler in Bellaire on Sept. 28, 1965.
A homemaker, she moved to Alden in 1992 from Mancelona where she and her husband lived for many years.
Margaret was secretary of the Alden Pool League and enjoyed gardening and reading.
Survivors include her husband Roger; four children, Marsha Cole of Traverse City, Michael (Shirley) Cole also of Traverse City, Renae (Tim) Sheatzley of Kingsley and Elaine (Pete) Kubsch of Roseville, IN; a brother, Robert (Ellen) Allan of Cadillac; a sister Mary Hane of Sun City, FL; four grandchildren; and five nieces.
There will be no services at this time. A private family graveside service will be held his summer at Fairview cemetery in Mancelona.
Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society, 525 W. Fourteenth St., Suite #5, Traverse City, MI 49684. Arrangements are by the Mancelona Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.
Anton Nicola
Anton "Art" Nicola went home to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at 7:50 p.m. on Tuesday Feb. 20, 2006. Art made a peaceful departure at home, surrounded by his wife and children who immediately joined in a prayer of praise to God for the 90 great years God had given him.
He was born June 28, 1915 in Antrim County, the son of Dutch immigrants. As a young man, he served in the Civilian Conservation Corps, and later married Mary Jane Smalley on Oct. 3, 1942. They moved to Detroit in 1943, and he worked briefly for Ford Motor Company, then moving back north in 1946. Both he and Mary Jane made a profession of faith in Christ that year, a decision which became the foundation for their new family and life together.
In 1948, Art went to work for Koenig Construction in Traverse City, finally moving here in 1958. He became a self-employed carpenter in 1961, building 16 new homes largely by himself, 13 of which are on West Bayshore Drive.
Art retired in 1980, and built one last home for himself, allowing him to enjoy West Bay for the next 25 years. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing, traveling in his motor home, and snowmobiling. He was active in Faith Reformed Church from 1958 on, serving there in many capacities over the years.
More than anything else, Art would want to be remembered as a man who loved his Lord, loved his family, and had a great sense of humor. Ultimately, he could say "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith" (2 Tim. 4:7). Art is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary Jane; their daughter, Beverly (Fred) Hastings of Kingsley; sons, Gary (Karen) of Lansing, Dan of Traverse City, and Doug (Cyndie) of Ohio; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and three sisters, Sadie Brooks and Ida Richardson of Charlevoix and Betty LaRouche of Gaylord. He was preceded in death by both parents; two brothers, Wilbert and Gerrit; one sister, Hattie; and beloved daughter-in-law, Roxie.
The funeral service took place Feb. 25 at the Faith Reformed Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Faith reformed Church in Traverse City, or to Gideons International.

Martha C. Aemisegger
Martha C. Aemisegger, 82, passed away on Monday, Feb. 20, 2006 at Kalkaska Memorial Health Center.
Born on Sept. 20, 1923 in Athens, Ohio, she was the only daughter of the late Frank and Helen Copeland.
A graduate of Ohio University, Martha married Jim Williams, who joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and was killed shortly after enlisting during World War II. On May 1, 1945 Martha married Loyd Aemisegger of Alden. The Aemiseggers lived in Alden and then in Rapid City, until poor health necessitated Martha's move to KMHC about two years after Loyd's death in 1993.
During her married life Martha and her husband were very active in the Shriners organization, the Scottish Rite, and particularly in Alden they were responsible for the creation of a baseball league that included a men's and two boys' teams up until 1962. It was primarily under their dedication and leadership that the Alden ballpark, complete with bleachers, a concession stand and lights was created. They were also founding members of the Three Lakes Association Environmental Group.
In addition to helping her husband with various projects and hobbies, Martha still found time to be on the Helena Township Library Board and participate as an active member of the Alden Methodist Church. Her own hobbies were gardening, painting and sewing. She was an active member of the Torch Lake Artisans' Association. Many of her family's quilts have been displayed in the TAAG quilt shows, and an exhibit of her own paintings and stitchery work was held at the Kalkaska facility.
Martha is survived by a step-daughter, Sue (Mrs. Clyde) Genter of Otto, NC, along with two grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren. In addition she is sadly missed by close friends Bob Logee and Dorothy Clore of Alden, Bill and Shirley Weiss and their sons Will and Taylor of Rapid City.
No memorial service is planned at this time, but those wishing to honor Martha are encouraged to send contributions to the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy, 3860 North Long Lake Rd., Traverse City, MI 49684.
Arrangements were made by Wolfe Funeral Home.

Mary R. Friend
Mary R. Friend, 86, of Jordan Township died on Feb. 22, 2006 at Grandvue Medical Care Facility in East Jordan.
She was born on Dec. 5, 1919 in East Jordan, the daughter of Leo and Myrtle (Helfridge) Umlor.
She had resided in Muskegon for many years prior to moving to Jordan Township in 1976.
She was a life member of the East Jordan VFW and enjoyed playing bingo and yatzee.
On Dec. 24, 1936 in Bellaire, she married William Friend who preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death were a daughter, Shirley Ann Friend, a son, Alvin Friend, three sisters, two brothers and her parents.
Surviving are a son, William (Mary Ruth) Friend of Muskegon, a daughter, Mary Jane Harris of Muskegon, a daughter-in-law Rose Friend of Grant, seven grandchildren, 17 greatgrandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and a special friend, Marsha Noblin of Muskegon.
Funeral services were held Feb. 25 at the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes with the Rev. Ronald G. Klooster officiating.
Interment will take place in Lakeview cemetery in Bellaire.
Memorial contributions may be made to Grandvue Medical Care Facility Activities Fund.

William Nelson Grimm
William Nelson Grimm was born on April 13, 1926, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the son of Anthony and Clarinda Mable (Nelson) Grimm. He grew up in Milwaukee and graduated from Solomon Juneau High School in 1944. He was a World War II air force veteran. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1949, with a Bachelor of Science in Soils, and remains a member of the U.W. Alumni Association.
On February 18, 1950, he married Jean Watson in Blanchardville, Wisconsin. He was employed for 31 years with the United States Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service, serving both Emmet and Charlevoix Soil and Water Conservation districts.
Grimm retired in 1981 and served as a Boyne City city commissioner and mayor pro tem until 1997. He was currently chairing the Boyne City airport board. He served a six-year term on the Char-Em Intermediate School Board. He was a current member of the American Legion Post #228, Boyne City, as well as the Masonic Lodge #391, Boyne City. He was a past member of the Boyne Valley Lions Club, where he served as president in 1974-1975.
A member of the First Presbyterian Church of Boyne City, he served as an elder, Sunday School teacher and superintendent, and youth fellowship leader.
Bill is survived by his wife, Jean (Watson), and their three children: Garry Thomas (Ann) Grimm, of Lansing; David Bruce (Julia) Grimm, of Lansing; and Mary Jean (Scott) Bunker, of Mesa, Ariz.; 12 grandchildren: Caroline (Abraham) Hands, Andrea, Allison, Alexandra, Barbara, Jeffery, Meredith, Sarah, Ryan, Leslie, Maura, and Kyle; and one great-grandson, Abraham, Jr. He was preceded in death by one son, Gordon William Grimm.
Bill will be sorely missed, as husband, father, grandfather, friend, and true brother in Christ. His example of love, service, hard work and great good humor are unequalled in the experience of all who know him. May his memory be eternal.

Noreen Mae Nowicki
Noreen M. Nowicki, 55, of Houston, Texas passed away at home on February 14, 2006, after a year-long illness.
Noreen was born on September 25, 1950, to Victor and Amaryllis (Detcher) Howard. She grew up in Boyne City and graduated in 1968 from Boyne City High School,
In 1977 Noreen married Greg Nowicki in Boyne City. They moved to Houston soon afterward where she worked in the insurance business until her second daughter was born.
Noreen is survived by her husband Greg; daughters Kimberly and Andrea; granddaughter Elise; sisters; Carole (Ray) Adams of Boyne City, Marilyn (Bud) Beebe of Boyne City, Karen (Ferd) Dielman of Petoskey, Lorraine Priest of Traverse City; and loving stepmother LaVetta Howard of Boyne City.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
