SEARS, WINTHROP, Archivist. Win died quietly at home in Livonia, on April 2, 2000, at the age of 81. He had been suffering from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (Lou Gehrig s Disease). He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Doris; his daughters, Ann Flowers and Deborah Sears, both of Ann Arbor; his grandsons, Michael and James Flowers; their father, Christopher Flowers; and Fred Ringia. Win was born in Somerville, MA on Dec. 8, 1918 to Winthrop Sears and Claire Seavey Sears. He graduated from Arlington High School in 1937; Harvard University, A.B., 1941; Columbia University, B.S. in Library Science, 1947, and the University of Michigan, M.A. in Library Science, 1951. During World War II he served in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1942-1945. Win worked as a librarian at the Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore, MD from 1947-1950, where he had the luck to meet and marry a fellow librarian, Doris Davis. The chance to further his education brought them to Michigan where, after completing his Master s degree, he took a job as archivist with the Ford Motor Company in the Henry Ford Archives in 1951. This turned into a life-long career. He stayed with the Archives when the Ford Motor Company donated it to the Edison Institute (Henry Ford Museum/Greenfield Village) in 1963. Win spent 30 years helping researchers and scholars delve into Ford history. He retired in 1981 but continued his association with the Archives as a volunteer for another 17 years until 1998. He also did volunteer work for the Dearborn Historical Society from 1981-1998. His community involvement included serving on the Livonia Library Commission, the Friends of the Livonia Library and the Livonia Citizens for Better Human Relations. He enjoyed his memberships in the Steamship Historical Society, the Bentley Historical Library and the Detroit Institute of Arts. Win was a soft-spoken man of principle and a gentleman of the old school, with a fondness for desserts, a wry sense of humor, a lively intellect and an avid interest in politics, current events, history and steamships. True to his New England roots, he was always happy to be near the water, whether the Great Lakes or the Atlantic Ocean. He enjoyed the companionship of relatives and long-time friends from his early days in New England, from the Army, Baltimore, fellow employees and volunteers at the Henry Ford Museum, and friends and neighbors in Livonia. After his diagnosis with Lou Gehrig s Disease, he came under the care of Arbor Hospice and the family appreciates their kind attentions. Memorial contributions may be made to ALS of Michigan, Inc., 8521 Lyndon St., Suite 200, Detroit, MI 48238. A private memorial service was held. Arrangements were provided by R.G. & G.R.
