LINDA McCOWAN

Mrs. Linda McCowan, age 56, passed away on Thanksgiving morning, Nov. 27, 2003. Mrs. McCowan was born June 19, 1947 to Lloyd and Esther (Bowen) Peacock in Muskegon.

She grew up in Hulbert and attended Newberry High School. She loved school and entered Anderson College in Anderson, Ind. at the tender age of 16, graduating with honors and receiving a Bachelor's Degree in Sociology.

After school, Linda joined VISTA to work with social services as a liaison. Using her language skills in Spanish, she helped people in the Pennsylvania area. She married Haywood E. Floyd in Lancaster, Pa. Together they had two children, Haywood IV and Melinda.

She moved back to Muskegon in 1976.

Linda was employed by the Muskegon Community Mental Health until her retirement and had most recently started her own business, Harambee Enterprises.

On Aug. 10, 1995 she married Bobby Lee McCowan Sr. in Muskegon. She attended Bethany Christian Reformed Church for many years and most recently became a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church.

She was very active in her community and was a member of the Nelson and McLaughlin Neighborhood Associations and of CAAP.

Her survivors include her husband, Bobby Joe McCowan Sr. of Muskegon Heights; her son, Haywood (Angel) Floyd of Muskegon; four grandchildren: P. Zachary, Jacob, Melinda and Isaac Haywood; her mother and step-father, Esther and Lowell Davenport; five sisters: Arlene (Ron) Sarley, Esther Gail (Sprague) Mudge, Ruth Peacock, Rose (Steven) Wilson and Connie (Wilbur) Thornton; one brother, Stephen (Bonnie) Peacock; nine nieces and nephews: Ron, Jr., Karlene, Matthew, Jennifer, Richie, Christopher, Brandon, Brianna & Jerusa Belle.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Melinda in 1989; an infant sister, Tina Peacock and her father, Lloyd Peacock.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003 at 1 p.m. at Seventh Day Adventist Church, 3040 Evanston Ave. with Pastor Robert Counsell officiating. Interment is at Restlawn cemetery.

Visitation will be Tuesday, 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Achterhoff Funeral Home, 1751 Peck Street.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Ron Sarley, Jr. Medical Fund.

Merritt Lawton

Merritt L. "Skip" Lawton, of Sault Ste. Marie, died at his home on September 24, 2002.

He was born on November 7, 1941 in Bay City, Michigan, the son of Reverend Clarence "C.A." and Janith Lawton. He graduated from Sault Area High School in 1960. He retired from the U.S. Navy after 22 years of service. He was employed at the Vegas Kewadin Casino.

Skip Lawton is survived by his mother, Janith Lawton of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.; three sisters: Mary Frances (Wayne) Morden of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., Ellen (John) Dawson of Kane, Penn., and Kathleen (Neil) Kaston of Elyria, Ohio; two brothers: John of Ypsilanti, Mich. and Timothy (Paula) of Gilbert, Ariz.; three daughters: Cecelia, Marites, and Rosemarie of Hawaii; as well as four grandchildren.

Mr. Lawton was preceded in death by his father Reverend C.A. Lawton in 1983.

Services for Skip Lawton will be held at Hovie Funeral Home on Monday, September 30 at 11 a.m. Interment will be at Oaklawn Chapel Gardens. Memorials may be left to the First Baptist Church.

WAYBRANT, DAVID JEREMY

WAYBRANT, DAVID JEREMY, was born on September 24, 2002 at 4:05 a.m. He was 6 1/2 inches long, and 2.7 ounces. He was born to Jeremy and Janine Waybrant. David temporarily joined two sisters, Bailie and Robyn. Funeral services will be announced at a later date.

Melvin Laramie

Melvin R. Laramie, age 65 of Grand Rapids, formerly of Sault Saint Marie, passed away Monday, December 2, 2002 at his home following a short illness.

He was born on September 20, 1937 in Sault Saint Marie, Michigan to Walter and Lena (Meyers) McCoy and moved to the Grand Rapids area in 1966. Melvin worked at the Enamelite Company in Grand Rapids for 30 years where he had been a painter and also worked at the Jolly Roger Ice Rink in Grand Rapids for 15 years. He also enjoyed and was very active in speed skating and in-line skating throughout his entire life.

Surviving are his children: Edith Laramie and Mike Goldston of White Cloud; Tina (David) Hamel of Grand Rapids; Shelly Hole & Terry Southerland of Grand Rapids; Melvin (Joy) Laramie Jr. of Grand Rapids; Shirl Ann Hole of Grand Rapids; 13 grandchildren; former wife, Shirley Hole of Grand Rapids; and his cousins: Ruth (Gaylord) James; Marie Martin; Toby "Junior" (Connie) Tyler; Jack Tyler.

He was preceded in death by his aunt, Louise Tyler.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 5, from 1-8 p.m. and Friday 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at Crandell Funeral Home -- White Cloud Chapel. Services will take place on Friday, December 6, at 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will take place at Chubbuck Pinewood cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the West Michigan Speed Skating Association.

Lloyd Roach Jr.

Lifelong Newberry resident, Lloyd H. "Bud" Roach Jr., 76, died on Thursday morning, November 20, 2003 at Marquette General Hospital in Marquette.

Born February 20, 1927 in Brevort, son of the late Lloyd Sr. and Lula (Bradley) Roach, Bud was a veteran of World War II serving in the United States Army until his honorable discharge in January of 1947. On January 21, 1947, Bud married the former Gladys Jenkins and made Newberry their home. Bud owned and operated Lloyd Roach Logging for over 42 years until his retirement in 1989. Bud was a member of St. Gregory's Catholic Church, BPOE #1705, American Legion Post #74 and the Michigan Association of Timbermen, all of Newberry. Bud was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying fishing, hunting, playing cards, and most importantly, spending time with his loving family.

Bud is survived by his loving wife of over 56 years, Gladys, of Newberry; children Patricia (Pink) Robinson of Newberry, Jerry (Denise) of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, John (Jackie) of Lakefield and Lisa (Butch) Quinlan of Newberry; nine grandchildren; sister Irene (Gene) Cook of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida; and many friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, November 25 at 10 a.m. at St. Gregory's Catholic Church in Newberry with Fr. Paul Karottekunnel officiating. Rite of Committal will follow at Forest Home cemetery in Newberry. Friends may call at the Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry on Monday, November 24, from 5-8 p.m. with prayers for the deceased to be recited at 6 p.m.

Those who wish may contribute to St. Gregory's Catholic Church or to the Helen Newberry Joy Hospital Dialysis Unit in memory of Lloyd "Bud" Roach Jr.

Christina Pappert

Christina Rose Pappert, age 71, a former resident of DeTour Village, Michigan passed away at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 1, 2002 at her home in Sault Ste. Marie. She was born in Berkley, Michigan on September 24, 1930 to Grig and Margaret Tinkis.

She and her husband were residents of Fort WAyne Indiana for 45 years before moving to DeTour Village in 1990. Christina worked for 20 years as a bookkeeper for Grant's Department Store and for the Three Rivers Apartment Complex in Fort Wayne, retiring in 1990. She was a member of the VFW Welch-McKinna Post of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. and enjoyed quilting, sewing and reading.

Christina is survived by two daughters: Peggy Lamley of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. and Renee (Richard) Stilwell of Fort Wayne, Ind.; four grandchildren: Melissa (Robert) Bailey, Stephanie Lamely, Nicole Drumm and Richard Stilwell; and one sister, Billie (Gerald) Munro of DeTour Village, Mich.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Pappert on January 11, 1987; one grandson, Joshua Steven Lamley in 1983; two sisters: Beverly Tinkis and Donna McGuire on June 21, 2002, and her parents, Grig and Margaret Tinkis.

At her request, no visitation will be held. Graveside committal services will be held on Wednesday, August 7, at 11 a.m. at Maple Grove cemetery in DeTour with Pastor Milton Adams officiating. Memorials may be left to the DeTour Village Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

The Reamer Funeral Home of Pickford, Mich. is handling arrangements.

Edna Cowan

Edna "Aleyn" Cowan, age 99, of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan passed away on Thursday morning, August 1, 2002, at Tendercare Nursing Home.

Aleyn was born in Pickford, Mich. on January 3, 1903, the daughter of the late Alex and Nellie (Wise) Crawford. She was raised in Parkerville, Mich. until her marriage to Louis Cowan in 1921, then she moved to Rosedale, Mich. In 1942, she and Louis moved to Ferndale, Mich. and later to Roya Oak, Mich. After Louis' death in 1984, she moved back to Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Sault Ste. Marie, Fall City Rebekah Lodge #289, and the Eastern Stars.

Aleyn is survived by nine first cousins, her "care givers"; Rhea Crawford, Jean Menerey, and Joann Gerrish, plus John (Ceil) Crawford of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., Max (Marge) Crawford of Auburn, Calif., Mavene Speck of Zellwood, Fla., Marion Sutton of Cedarville, Mich., Elizabeth Hill of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. and Stanley Harrison of Petoskey, Mich. She is also survived by many loving second cousins and friends.

Visitation will be held from 3-5 p.m. and from 7-9 p.m. on Sunday, August 4, at Hovie Funeral Home with a Rebekah Service at 7 p.m. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, August 5 at the funeral home with Reverend David Henderson officiating. Burial will be at Oaklawn Chapel Gardens.

Memorials may be left to the elevator fund at the First Baptist Church of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.

Peyton Bell

Peyton Elizabeth Bell, of Davisburg, passed away on Friday, August 2, 2002. She was the loving angel of her parents, Alan and Jill Bell, for 11 days.

She was the dear granddaughter of Robert (Julia) Bell of Alpena, George (Carol) Wallace of Clio, and Karla (Roy) Flushing; great-granddaughter of Margaret Bell of Sault Ste. Marie, Dora Beamish of Dafter, Hilda Rippy of Grand Blanc and Margie Stevens of Burton; little niece of Troy Wallace of Mt. Morris.

The family would like to thank Hurley Hospital Neo-Natal Intensive Care Unit and U of M Mott Children's Hospital PTC Unit for taking such wonderful care of Peyton.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 7 at 11 a.m. at Coats Funeral Home, 3141 Sashabaw Rd. (Exit 89 off of I-75), Waterford, Mich. (248) 674-0461. Family members will receive friends on Tuesday, August 6, from 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, and envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

LaPINE, ROGER "TIM"

LaPINE, ROGER "TIM," age 55, of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan passed away on Friday morning, August 2, 2002 at his home. Arrangements are incomplete at this time, but will be announced by Hovie Funeral Home.

SIMS, MARY I.

SIMS, MARY I., age 88, of M-48 in Stalwart, Michigan, passed away at 12:50 p.m. on Saturday, August 3, 2002 at War Memorial Hospital. Arrangements are incomplete at this time, but will be handled by Reamer Funeral Home of Pickford, Mich.

Kathleen McGill

Kathleen Z. McGill, age 54, of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, passed away on Monday afternoon, September 9, 2002 at War Memorial Hospital.

Kathleen was born in Ypsilanti, Michigan on May 31, 1948. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Sault Ste. Marie. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and children.

She is survived by her husband; Daryl McGill; her mother, Esther (Ed) Belleau; a daughter, Deborah (Dan) Maleport of Sault Ste. Marie; two step-daughters, Caryl (Dan) Densmore of Sault Ste. Marie and Sharyl (Wally) Sauenkoff of Cheboygan, Michigan; three step-sons, James (Shannon) McGill and Darin McGill, both of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan; and Roger McGill of Fairbanks, Alaska; four grandchildren, Kyle Maleport; Jessica Maleport; Mandy McGill; and Erin McGill. She is also survived by a brother, Alan Barr of Cedarville, Michigan.

She was preceded in death by her father, Kenneth Wilkerson, (Alice), and a brother, Charles VanBuren.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 12, 2002 at Oaklawn Chapel Gardens, with Kent Kramer officiating. Memorials may be left to the American Cancer Society, Upper Peninsula Area.

Hovie Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Meredith Windsor

Meredith Melvin "Duke" Windsor, age 80, of Kewadin, Michigan, went to be with the Lord at 8:03 a.m. on Saturday, September 7, 2002, at his summer home in Hessel, Michigan, surrounded by his loving family.

Meredith was born in Hessel, Michigan on June 15, 1922 to Meredith and Anna Windsor. He spent his early years growing up in Hessel, graduating from Cedarville High School in 1939. After graduation, he started a career in engineering in Detroit, Michigan. He spent 55 years in the engineering field and retired from Star Cutter Inc. of Elk Rapids, Michigan as Executive Engineer, head of the design and engineering division.

He was a member of the City of the Straits Trinity Masonic Lodge #502 F. & A.M. of Michigan, the Elks Lodge of Livonia, Michigan, the Elk Rapids Lions Club and the Elk Rapids Golf Club. Meredith was a talented carpenter, boat builder, and a master gardener. He enjoyed golfing and making wine, which he gave to his many friends and family. Meredith was a kind and loving father and will be truly missed by his entire family and friends.

Meredith is survived by his loving wife, Frances of Traverse City, Michigan; three daughters, Donna (Pete) Nelson and Dianna (Harry) Brumer, both of Traverse City, Michigan, and Sally Jo (Clive) Jenkins of Wakeman, Ohio; five sons, Kenneth (Barb) Weinzapfel of Centreville, West Virginia; Gerald (Jo) Weinzapfel of Brighton, Michigan; Chris (Linda) Weinzapfel of Kewadin, Michigan; Charlie (Lorie) Windsor of Traverse City, Michigan; and Greg (Kim) Weinzapfel of Farmington Hills, Michigan; 21 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one brother, Norman (Anna) Windsor of Hessel, Michigan and many nieces and nephews.

Three sisters, Grace Simmons, Helen Turk, and Emma Windsor; two brothers, William and Ernest Windsor, and his parents preceded him in death.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 14, at the Covell Funeral Home in Elk Rapids, Michigan with Rev. Michael Riggins officiating. Friends may call from 1 p.m. until the time of services.

Graveside committal services will be held at the Cedar cemetery in Cedarville, Michigan at 1 p.m. on Sunday, September 15, with Mr. Norman Windsor officiating. Cremation has occured through the services of Reamer Funeral Home in Pickford, Michigan. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Munson Hospice House of Traverse City, Michigan or the Clark Township Ambulance Corps of Cedarville, Michigan.

Molly Niemi

Molly C. Niemi, mother of two, grandmother to six, great-grandmother to ten, great-great grandmother of three, in the Grace of God, passed from this earth while among friends at Tendercare Nursing Home on Friday, November 15, 2002.

Born March 4, 1916 in Hastings, Minnesota, she lived most of her adult life in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.

She was a member of the American Legion Post #3 and VFW Post 3676 where she served as Auxiliary President from 1972-1973.

She is survived by the aforementioned family members; a brother, Robert Snider and a sister, Margaret Snider both of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.

Abiding by her wishes, there will be no formal services. Interment will take place at Kinross Lakeside cemetery adjoining her deceased husband, Thomas Niemi.

Arrangements by Clark Bailey Newhouse Funeral Home.

Martha Shawhan

Martha "Marty" C. Shawhan of Minneapolis Street passed away on November 14, 2002 at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey, Mich. She was born on June 26, 1939 in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.

Marty was a member of St. Mary's ProCathedral Church and an active member in the St. Mary's Altar Society. She was a member of St. Vincent DePaul Society, where she was a volunteer. Her memberships also included the Medjugorje Prayer Group and the Lake State Chorus. She was also a dedicated nurse at War Memorial Hospital for more than 30 years.

Marty is survived by a son, Joseph (Laura) Shawhan of Sault Ste. Marie; two daughters: Sheri (Joseph) Newcomb of Dafter, and Karla (Richard) Shawhan-Bonnee of Walloon Lake; three sisters: Adele Goupille of Negaunee, Mary Wood of Sault Ste. Marie, and Sadie Atkinson of Sault Ste. Marie; seven grandchildren: Lee Newcomb, Jami Newcomb, Genevieve Bonnee, Stacy Bonnee, Mia Shawhan, Jordan Shawhan and Rachel Shawhan; one granddaughter-in-law, Randi (Clark) Newcomb; and two great-grandchildren: Trisha Clark and Elyce Newcomb.

She was predeceased by her parents, Elias and Marina Andary; a sister, Genevieve Schwartz; and two brothers: Anthony Andary and Paul C. Andary.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, November 17, 2002 at Clark Bailey Newhouse Funeral Home. Celebrant will be Father Ted Brodeur. Rosary services will at 8:15 p.m.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, November 18, 2002 at St. Mary's ProCathedral Church at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Riverside cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent DePaul or St. Mary's Parish.
