Ione Palmyra Krienke
Ione Palmyra Krienke, 86, Sleepy Eye, died Sunday, Feb. 2, 2003, at her home. Funeral services were Wednesday at Faith United Methodist Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Ione was born May 26, 1916, in North Home Township, Brown County, the daughter of Elmer and Helena (Swanson) Sampson. She had made a public profession of faith on several different occasions. Ione attended District #13 Country School and was employed by various farm families. She married Merrill Krienke on Aug. 20, 1941 at his home farm. She was a member of Faith United Methodist Church in Sleepy Eye. Ione enjoyed gardening, landscaping, nature, watching birds, traveling - especially going to Israel and Alaska and spending time with her family.
She is survived by her husband, Merrill of Sleepy Eye; sons, Norman and wife Shirley Krienke, Paul and wife Mary Krienke, Lee and wife Sandi Krienke and Alan and wife Pam Krienke, all of Sleepy Eye; grandchildren, Beth and James Klein, Aaron Krienke, Rebecca and Josh Anderson, Sarah Krienke, Rachel Krienke, Naomi Krienke, Grace and Abe Stopani, Martha Krienke, Caleb Krienke, Noah Krienke, Hosanna! Krienke, Kimberlee and Bruce Jost, Erica and Jason Smith, Faith and Derek Jensen and James Krienke; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers and sisters, Roger and wife Margaret Sampson, Doyle Sampson, Alice and husband Elwood Campbell, Ora and Ed Gunneson and Glayd and husband Vernon Marti.
Casket bearers were Caleb Krienke, Noah Krienke, Aaron Krienke, Jason Smith, Bruce Jost, Jim Klein and Josh Anderson.
Edith A. Rosenstengel
Edith Anna Rosenstengel, 85, rural Comfrey, died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2003, at Gil Mor Manor Nursing Home in Morgan. Funeral services were Monday at The Church of the Japanese Martyrs, Leavenworth, with interment in the church cemetery. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Edith was born July 11, 1917, in Mulligan Township, Brown County, the daughter of Joseph and Anna (Reiniger) Sellner. She attended District #46 Country School through the eighth grade. Edith worked on the farm until her marriage on June 4, 1940, to John Rosenstengel at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye. They moved only a few miles down the road to another farm in Mulligan Township, where they farmed together until John's death in 1971. Edith continued with her farm life and work until becoming a resident at Gil Mor Manor in July of 2002. She was a former member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye and a long time member of The Church of the Japanese Martyrs in Leavenworth. Edith was also active in the Christian Women's Society and sewed, quilted and patched for the missions. She enjoyed farming, her dairy cows, chickens, gardening, cooking, making homemade wines, visiting with her friends, relatives and neighbors and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Edith is survived by her son, Edward and wife Jeanette Rosenstengel of Sleepy Eye; daughters, Rosemary and husband Clifford Pankratz of Springfield; Doris Moe and special friend James Dahlgren of Hendricks and Bernetta and husband Scott Hesse of St. James; 18 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; brother, Art and wife Marion Sellner of Sleepy Eye; and sister, Mary Magdalen (Lena) and husband Harold Wersal of Morgan. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Anna Sellner; parents-in-law, Joe and Katherine Rosenstengel; husband, John Rosenstengel in 1971; daughters, Catherine Steffl and Bernice Rosenstengel; and sister, Cecelia Hornick.
Loraine A. Windschitl
Loraine Adellia Windschitl, 90, Sleepy Eye, died Friday, Jan. 31, 2003, at Divine Providence Community Home in Sleepy Eye. Funeral services were Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Loraine was born June 3, 1912, in Brookville Township, Redwood County, the daughter of Anton and Anna (Torney) Madsen. She attended country school, District #34, in Brookville Township, graduating from Sleepy Eye High School and Normal Training. Loraine then taught country school in the Morgan area for several years. On Nov. 15, 1931, Loraine married Arthur Petrehn in Sleepy Eye and had two children, Betty Ann and Charles Anton Petrehn. They lived in Cobden and several other areas until moving to Sleepy Eye in the late 1930s, and were later divorced. On Feb. 6, 1945, Loraine married Clarence "Doc" Windschitl in New Ulm. Doc adopted her two children. Loraine also sold Radelle Hair Products and Tupperware for over 30 years. She was active in the Senior Citizens organization, holding several offices and worked at card recycling, patchworkers and was a volunteer for bingo at the Sleepy Eye Health Care Center. She was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church and its auxiliary. Loraine enjoyed her family and friends, flower gardening, crafts and playing cards.
Loraine is survived by her son, Charles and wife Dolores Windschitl of Sleepy Eye; six grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Alsace Bjorndahl and Evelyn Kerkhoff, both of Belview; sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Alexander of Green Bay, Wis. and Alice Madsen of Morgan; brother-in-law, Bill Kamholz of Alexandria; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clarence "Doc" Windschitl in 1986; daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Martin Sellner; grandson, Mike Sellner; sister, Marian Kamholz; brothers, Neal and Weldon Madsen; and many brothers and sisters-in-law.
Casket bearers were Shane Sellner, Gordon Pehrson, Martin Sellner, Jr., Jason Sellner, Charles Pehrson and Kevin Windschitl.
Marie A. Mathiowetz
Marie Ann Mathiowetz, 87, rural Comfrey, died Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, at her home. Funeral services were Wednesday at The Church of the Japanese Martyrs in Leavenworth, with interment in the church cemetery. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Marie was born Oct. 23, 1915, in Mulligan Township, Brown County, the daughter of John and Bertha (Sellner) Hillesheim. She attended District #70 Country School, after which she helped at home and others in the area. On May 4, 1937, Marie married Herman J. Mathiowetz at The Church of the Japanese Martyrs in Leavenworth. Following marriage, the couple moved to their current farm in Mulligan Township. Marie was a lifetime member of The Church of the Japanese Martyrs, a member of the Christian Mothers and Catholic Aid Association. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, crafts, canning, cooking, playing cards, visiting with friends, spending time with her grandchildren and especially enjoyed her time working at Augustin's Butcher Shop and visiting with the clients, where she was employed for nearly 30 years.
Survivors include daughters, Phyllis Aanonson of Anchorage, Alaska and Bernice Savage of Rochester; sons, Marvin Mathiowetz of Princeton and Gerald and wife Mary Lou Mathiowetz of Comfrey, 12 grandchildren; 14 grandchildren; brother, James and wife Rosella Hillesheim of Sleepy Eye and sisters, Helen and husband Sylvester Helget of Sleepy Eye and Florence Seidl of Faribault. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Herman in 1996; a son in infancy; brother, Edmund Hillesheim; and sister, Agnes Treml.
Gilbert John Schauman
Gilbert John Schauman, 72, Sleepy Eye, died Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003, at the Sleepy Eye Municipal Hospital. Funeral services were Saturday at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, with interment in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Gilbert was born May 9, 1930, in Home Township, Brown County, to Ferdinand A. and Elsie (Frank) Schauman. He attended and graduated from Sleepy Eye Public High School. On June 16, 1950, Gilbert married Janette Schueler at St. John's Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye. The couple farmed in Leavenworth Township for 31 years before moving to Sleepy Eye in 1981. Gilbert was a member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, Sleepy Eye and the N.R.A. He served on church council and numerous other church boards. Gilbert enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and woodworking.
Gilbert is survived by his children, Vickie and Craig Peterson of Chaska, Michael and wife Marilyn Schauman of Sleepy Eye, Julie and husband Grant Hatten of Stewart, Nita and husband Harlan Helget of Darfur, John and wife Janice Schauman of Sleepy Eye, Joel Schauman of St. James, Kayla and husband Daniel Nason of Sleepy Eye, Gina Schauman of Hector and William and wife Jane Schauman of Marshall; 25 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; brother, Donald and wife Irene Schauman of Marshall; sisters, Ruth Messerschmidt of Sleepy Eye, Florence Patterson of Buena Vista Colo., Elaine and husband Bert Miller of Denver, Colo., Arlene Galant of Needles, Calif., and Lois and husband Hollis Ladd of Sleepy Eye. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Janette in 1998; son, Daniel; brother, Edwin Schauman and sister, Dorothy Libbey.

William Frank Joseph Volker
William Frank Joseph Volker, 88, Sleepy Eye, died Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003, at the Sleepy Eye Municipal Hospital, Sleepy Eye. Funeral services were Monday at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
William was born July 10, 1914, to Henry and Johanna (Dumke) Volker in Sleepy Eye. He attended Sleepy Eye High School. On June 10, 1939, William married Grace Schwint in Iowa. William worked in road construction and in 1945, started working with the John Deere dealer in Sleepy Eye. He retired from Bruggeman John Deere in 1979. He was a member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church. William enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, watching athletic activities, playing cards and spending time with his grandchildren.
William is survived by his wife, Grace of Sleepy Eye; son, Paul and wife Jeanne Volker of Sleepy Eye; six grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; sisters, Esther Teschendorf of Fargo, N.D., Alice Christiensen of Sleepy Eye, Rose Horton of Sleepy Eye and Florence Haas of Rochelle, Ill.; brother-in-law, Robert and wife Violet Schwint of Tracy; and sisters-in-law, Marge and husband Ivan Sandmann of Sleepy Eye and Frances Feig of Willmar. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Johanna; sister, Ruth; and brother, Henry.
Florian J. Domeier
Florian J. Domeier, 91, formerly of New Ulm died Saturday, Feb. 22, 2003, at Fairfax Community Home in Fairfax. Funeral services were held Wednesday at The Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm with burial in the Catholic Cemetery, New Ulm. Minnesota Valley Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Florian was born Aug. 6, 1911, in Stark Township, Brown County to John and Rosa (Kloeckl) Domeier. He married Ann Rubischko on Sept. 6, 1937, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Mankato. After marriage they lived in Madelia, Grand Rapids, Mankato and Kansas City, Mo. They moved to New Ulm in 1945. He was a farmer and later worked at 3M in New Ulm. Florian was a past member of the lzaak Walton League and the Lost Dog & Fox Hunters Club in New Ulm, a member of The Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm, a 75-year member of St. Joseph's Catholic Aid Council and was a member of the St. Patrick's Council #1076 Knights of Columbus and Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus.
Florian is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Catherine and Ernest Jenkins of St. Paul; grandchildren, Gregory Jenkins of St. Paul, Dr. Patricia Jenkins of Albuquerque, N.M., Jeanette and husband, Daniel Anderson of Little Canada, William Jenkins and his fiancee, Sara Begeman both of New Ulm, Susan and husband, Jeffery Puckett of Moorhead, Joy Jenkins of Boulder, Colo.; great grandchildren, Tara Puckett and Grant Puckett; sister-in-law, Mary Domeier of New Ulm; and brother-in-law, Walter Gleisner of New Ulm. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ann Domeier on April 3, 1995; sister, Marcella Gleisner; and brothers, Marvin Domeier and Norbert Domeier.
Joyce Krzmarzick
Joyce Mary (Helget) Krzmarzick, 73, Hutchinson, died Monday, Feb. 17, 2003, at Burns Manor Nursing Home in Hutchinson. Funeral services were held Friday at St. Anastasia Catholic Church in Hutchinson, with interment in the church cemetery.
Joyce was born April 28, 1929, in Leavenworth Township, Brown County, the daughter of Emil and Elsie (Ludwig) Helget. She was baptized as an infant and later confirmed at St. John's Catholic Church in Searles. She attended Searles High School. On Nov. 10, 1949, Joyce was united in marriage to Arthur Krzmarzick in Sanborn. Their marriage was blessed with five children. Joyce and Art made their home on a farm near Sleepy Eye before moving to Audubon, Iowa in 1968. In 1978, they moved to Hutchinson. Joyce enjoyed taking care of her family as a homemaker. She and Art were blessed with 53 years of marriage. Joyce attended St. Anastasia Catholic Church in Hutchinson. She was a member of the St. Anastasia Council of Catholic Women, a volunteer for the Elks Does, the Hutchinson Legion Auxiliary and the Knights of Columbus Auxiliary. She enjoyed ceramics, gardening, reading novels and playing bridge. When she needed assistance with her daily care, Joyce became a resident of Burns Manor Nursing Home in Hutchinson in July of 1998.
Joyce is survived by her husband, Arthur Krzmarzick of Hutchinson; daughters, Mary and husband Bart Peitz of Baltimore, Md., Jeanne Holfield of Hutchinson, Therese Hofmeister of Hutchinson, Karen and husband Scott Dirkx of Schertz, Tex.; son, Joseph and wife Susan Krzmarzick of Mankato; grandchildren, Nicholas Holfield, Joseph and Kelly Hofmeister, and Ryan and Sarah Dirkx; sisters, Elaine and husband Denny Pechtel of New Ulm, Delores Alt of Mankato, Darlene and husband Leo Wersal of Sioux Falls, S.D.; sister-in-law, Patricia Helget of Cleghorn, Iowa; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Emil and Elsie Helget; and brother, Kenneth Helget.
Casket bearers were Randy Wersal, David Wersal, Tim Helget, Todd Alt, Ryan Dirkx and Nick Holfield.
Katie Marie Miller
Katie Marie Miller, daughter of Travis and Paula Miller, Morgan, was stillborn on Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2003, at New Ulm Medical Center. A Service of Remembrance was held Saturday at Calvary Baptist Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Katie is survived by her parents, Travis and Paula (Merritt) Miller of Morgan; brothers, Cody and Wyatt Miller of Morgan; paternal grandmother, Corrine Miller of Balaton; maternal grandparents, Scott and Nancy Merritt of Long Prairie; paternal great-grandmother, Orla Swan of Balaton; maternal great-grandmother, Juanita Bruder of Kamiah, Idaho; and several aunts and uncles. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, Jerry Miller.
Florence (Bellig) Novak
Florence (Bellig) Novak, 83, Alexandria, died Saturday, Feb. 15, 2003, at the Knute Nelson Memorial Home in Alexandria, where she lived for the past two years. Funeral services were held Wednesday at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church in Villard.
Florence is survived by her children, Joyce and husband Gary Vickerman of Deer River, Joel Novak of Fort Drum, NY and daughter-in-law, Luverlle Novak of Villard; sister, Ursula Broich of Sleepy Eye; brother, Robert and wife Marge Bellig of Redwood Falls; 11 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Veronica Bellig; husband, Frank; sons, James and Francis; and sister, Sylvia Hammerschmidt.
Patricia (Pat) Peterson
Patricia (Pat) Peterson, went home to her lord on Feb. 19, 2003, at the age of 72 years. Funeral services were held on Saturday, Feb. 22, 2003, at the Braham Evangelical Lutheran Church, with Reb. Richard Chronis officiating. Music was provided by organist Elaine Johnson, vocalist Marie Grundberg and harpist, Sally Ahlgren. Active pallbearers were Waldo Randall, Gene Scheiffert, Dean Luo, Chris Christense, Jon Jacobson and Dennis Lokken. Honorary pallbearers were Maxine Ahlstrom, Dixie Randall, Florence Lang, Dorothy Lang, Jerri Aune and MaryJean Holmquist. Interment was in Rice Lake Lutheran Cemetery.
Pat was born March 17, 1930, in St. Paul, to Albert and Olga Hohle. She was baptized at Como Park Lutheran Church in St. Paul. She attended rural school in Renville County, District 47 and high school in Bird Island. Pat was confirmed at Palmyra Lutheran Church in rural Hector on April 23, 1944. This was the church where her parents had both grown up and been confirmed. Pat completed a comptometry course in St. Paul and worked at Waldorf Paper Co. before beginning college. In 1952, Pat graduated from St. Olaf College and finished an MS degree from the University of Wyoming in 1957. She taught high school in Madelia, Clarkfield, Chokio and Braham. In later years she also taught at vocational and community colleges in Pine City and Cambridge. On June 9, 1954, Pat married the love of her life, Jack Peterson, in Franklin. He was a high school principal at Chokio and Braham. They lived in Braham from 1957 and raised three daughters. Pat was a busy homemaker and volunteer in the church and community organizations. She was a 4-H leader all the years her daughters were involved and a 40-year member of AAUW. Pat and Jack loved to travel and had been in 49 states and 20 countries, including China and behind the Iron Curtain in 1989. The most awe-inspiring trip for Pat was Israel, where she had not expected to be so overwhelmed by the history and sacredness. Work and play at their cabin on Lake Ossawinamakee occupied much of her time for the last 39 years.
In addition to her husband, Jack, Pat leaves three daughters and three sons-in-law, Sue and Darryl Finn of Menominee Falls, Wis., Dixie and Alex Gerosolina of Austin, Tex. and JulieAnn and Scott Shelton of San Diego, Calif.; four adorable grandchildren, Anna and Eric Gerosolina and Inger and Ian Shelton; cousins, several close first cousins and many dear friends. Pat and Jack also have an extended family. They were very active with the AFS foreign exchange program. They hosted a student from Scotland and one from Norway. On Thanksgiving Day, they were on their way home from a 10-day trip after visiting their Scottish daughter, Meg Moreland and her family when Pat's cancer turned final. They also were involved in the foreign Teacher Exchange program. They hosted Yue Liu in 1988-89. They sponsored Yue Liu to come back for an advanced degree. Dr. Liu lives with her husband Li and son Dean Luo in Chicago and teaches at Harry Truman Jr. College.
Arrangements were handled by Rock Mankie Burial and Cremation Service of Braham.
