Milo F. Jirak
Milo F. Jirak, 86, Montgomery, died Thursday, April 1, 2004, at Queen of Peace Hospital in New Prague. Funeral services were Monday, April 5, at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Montgomery, with interment in Calvary Cemetery, Montgomery. Military Honors were provided by Montgomery Area Veteran's Honor Guard.
Milo was born March 30, 1918, in Lanesburg Township, Le Sueur County, the son of Mary (Korbel) and John Jirak. He graduated from Montgomery High School in 1937, and lived and farmed in the Montgomery area all of his life. Milo married Gladys Kuzel on Nov. 17, 1941, in New Prague. Milo served in the United States Army during WWII. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, VFW and Legion Clubs and Pioneer Power. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, going to band concerts and listening to old time music.
Milo is survived by his wife, Gladys of Montgomery; son, Don and wife Sarah Jirak of Sleepy Eye; grandson, Shawn Jirak of Sleepy Eye; brother, Clarence and wife Mary Jirak of New Prague; and sister, Harriet and husband Ray Schoenbauer of New Prague. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Eugene Jirak and Harry Jirak.

Elmer L. Krenz
Elmer L. Krenz, 73, Sleepy Eye, died Friday, April 2, 2004, at Sleepy Eye Medical Center of cancer. Funeral services were held at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, on Monday, April 5, with interment in the church Cemetery, with military rites by the Sleepy Eye Honor Guard. Elmer was born July 8, 1930, in Sleepy Eye, to Elmer and Etta (Severns) Krenz, Sr. He grew up in Sleepy Eye and graduated from Sleepy Eye Public High School. He served in the United States Air Force from 1951-1954. Elmer married Eileen Zollner on Nov. 26, 1956, in Sleepy Eye, where they lived until her death in 1987. Elmer was employed by Del Monte until his retirement. He married Ukee Stueber on Nov. 17, 1989 and they lived in New Ulm until her death on Sept. 11, 2003. He currently resided at Ross Park Apartments in Sleepy Eye. Elmer liked fishing and spending his summers at his camper on Rice Lake. He especially enjoyed the kids and giving rides on his golf cart. He was an enthusiastic lottery player and looked forward to his daily card game at Smiley's in New Ulm until his illness.
Elmer is survived by his children, Jeff Krenz of New Ulm, Kathy and husband Leigh Mailloux of Washington, DC, Jody and husband Wayne Braun of Sleepy Eye, Vicky Sprenger of Sleepy Eye, Ward Krenz of Sioux Falls, S.D. and Tom Krenz of St. Cloud; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; six step-children; 10 step-grandchildren; sister, Dorothy Gross; and mother-in-law, Helen Zollner both of Sleepy Eye. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Eileen; and wife, Ukee; daughter, Melody in 1967, and a sister.

Daniel Richard Augustin
Daniel Richard Augustin, 46, Sleepy Eye, died Wednesday, March 31, 2004, at his home in rural Sleepy Eye. Funeral services were held Saturday, April 3, at The Church of the Japanese Martyrs in Leavenworth, with Father Todd Petersen officiating. Interment is in the church cemetery. Daniel was born Oct. 23, 1957, in Sleepy Eye, the son of Russell and Donna (Hose) Augustin. He grew up and attended school in Leavenworth and Sleepy Eye graduating from Sleepy Eye Public High School in 1978. Dan attended vocational school in Canby, where he graduated with a degree in welding. He worked as a welder in Owatonna for about 10 years. Due to health reasons, Dan moved home to live with his family. Daniel was a member of The Church of the Japanese Martyrs in Leavenworth. He enjoyed being outdoors, visiting with family, mowing lawn, reading the paper and Bandit their siamese cat.
Survivors include his mother, Donna Augustin of Sleepy Eye; sister, Kathy and husband Bruce Meier of Owatonna; brothers, Ron Augustin of Sleepy Eye and Steve Augustin of Sleepy Eye; nieces and nephews, Shelly Augustin, Elizabeth Edick, Matthew Edick, Genevieve Meier and Jacob Meier. He was preceded in death by his father, Russell; and brother, Michael.

Leonard J. Sellner
Leonard Joseph Sellner, 89, Sleepy Eye, died Sunday, April 11, 2004, at Divine Providence Community Home, Sleepy Eye. Visitation will be at Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye, on Wednesday, April 14, 4-8 p.m. and on Thursday from 7:30-9:30 a.m. There will be a parish prayer service at 5 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Services will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, on Thursday, April 15, 10:30 a.m. The Clergy will be Fr. Brian Oestreich. Leonard was born Nov. 5, 1914, in Albin Township, the son of Christopher and Marianna (Schoegl) Sellner. He attended school in Albin Township. Leonard lived and farmed in Albin Township until 1942, when he served in the United States Army for four years during WWII. After his discharge, he married Florence Grosam on Sept. 3, 1946. They farmed in Home Township. He was a member of the Eagles Club, VFW and the American Legion. Leonard enjoyed farming with his sons, playing tuba, clarinet and trumpet and has recorded with various Old Time Bands, mainly Don Morris and the Jolly Germans, Les Schuft and the Country Dutchmen and the Leon Helget Band. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, listening to old time music and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Leonard is survived by his children, Rita Domeier and special friend, Paul Clobes of Fairfax, Francis and wife Teri Sellner and Eugene and wife Lois Sellner, all of Sleepy Eye; grandchildren, Paul and wife Ruth Domeier, Karen Domeier, Steve and wife Amy Domeier, Gerry Domeier and Samantha Sellner; great-grandson, Brent Domeier; brother, Clement and wife Dorothy Sellner of Sleepy Eye; sisters, Clara Schroepfer of Sleepy Eye, Angie Weber of Gibbon and Ann Hacker of Lafayette; brother-in-law, Harold Johnson of Madelia, sisters-in-law, Florence Sellner and Lucille Sellner, both of Sleepy Eye; and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Florence; brothers, William Sellner, Albert Sellner, Christ Sellner, Edmund Sellner and Florian Sellner; sisters, Mary Moldan, Mathilda Blumhoefer, Amelia Heitzer, Kate Johnson, Martha Weber and Bertha Muehlbauer; and son-in-law, David Domeier.

Violet Ann Barsness
Violet Ann Barsness, 78, Mankato, formerly of Sleepy Eye, passed away peacefully in her sleep Easter morning, Sunday, April 11, 2004, at Hillcrest Health Care Center in Mankato. A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, April 17, 11 a.m., at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye. Friends may call on the family from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday at the church. Clergy will be Fr. Brian Oestreich. Interment in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. Arrangements are with the Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye. Violet was born March 21, 1926, the daughter of Henry and Emma (Hillesheim) Seifert in Sleepy Eye. She grew up and lived in Sleepy Eye most of her life. Violet attended St. Mary's School and was a member of St. Mary's Church in Sleepy Eye. She worked on the family farm and at Haas Press until 1968. She married Frank Allan Barsness on April 19, 1969, at St. Mary's Church in Sleepy Eye. Violet moved to live with her daughter Ann and family after Frank's death in 1992. She resided there until she moved to Hillcrest Health Care Center on Sept. 5, 2002. Violet was a member of St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Mankato, Sleepy Eye VFW Auxiliary and the Christian Mothers Society. Violet enjoyed sending cards and letters to family and friends. She was a loyal Twins and Vikings fan. She had a special personality that touched many hearts. She was very helpful to her family and valued the time she spent with her grandchildren, Cody and Chelsey. Violet developed a special relationship with the family dog, Dakota.
Survivors include daughter, Ann and husband Steven Starrett of Mankato; step-son, Raymond and wife Shirley Barsness of Winona; step-daughter, Viola Anderson of Detroit Lakes; two grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; sisters, Luella and husband Michael Kuelbs of Sleepy Eye and Dolores Vickers of Gordonville, Tex.; brothers, Art and wife Arleen Seifert of Sleepy Eye and Stanley and Patricia Seifert of Sleepy Eye; sisters-in-law, Irene Seifert of Sleepy Eye, Bernetta Seifert of Chino Hills, Calif. and Dorothy Seifert of West Cavina, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Frank; brothers, Sylvester Seifert, Ervin Seifert and Harvey Seifert; and brother-in-law, Orville "Vic" Vickers.

James F. Hillesheim
James Florian Hillesheim, 83, Sleepy Eye, died Wednesday, April 7, 2004, peacefully in his home due to complications of Bone Cancer. Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 13, at The Church of the Japanese Martyrs in Leavenworth, with interment in the church cemetery. Military rites were performed by the Sleepy Eye Honor Guard. James Florian Hillesheim was born May 14, 1920, in Mulligan Township, Brown County, the son of John H. and Bertha (Sellner) Hillesheim. James attended country school, District #70 in Mulligan Township. He farmed with his father until attending vocational school in Kansas City, Mo. Upon graduation, he was employed with the Bel Air for two years in Buffalo, N.Y., then an additional two years in Niagara Falls, N.Y. as a supervisor in assembling airplanes. He was drafted out of Bel Air into the Army AirCorps and served stateside for two years during WWII. James resumed farming with his father at the homestead in Mulligan Township upon his honorable discharge from the service. James married Rosella Theresa Schroepfer on November 21, 1950 at the Church of the Japanese Martyrs in Leavenworth, MN. After marriage they resided and worked on the farm with his father. James and Rosella moved to Sleepy Eye upon retirement in the fall of 1986. James was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye, the Knights of Columbus and the Catholic Aid Society of Leavenworth. James enjoyed working in the shop, building, country music, storytelling and spending time with his loved ones; both family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Rosella Theresa (Schroepfer) Hillesheim; children, Beverly and husband Steve Soukup of New Ulm, James H. and wife Cindy Hillesheim of Springfield, John and wife Lorraine Hillesheim of Sleepy Eye and Christina and husband Chris Hopp of New Ulm; Step daughters, Bernetta and husband Ronald Helget of Comfrey, Carol and husband Pat Wurtzberger of Sleepy Eye and Diane and husband Elroy (Si) Seifert of New Ulm; 22 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; sisters, Helen Helget of Sleepy Eye and Florence Seidl of Faribault. James was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Edmund Hillesheim; and sisters, Agnes Treml and Marie Mathiowetz.

Leonard E. Neidecker
Leonard Neidecker, 86, Sleepy Eye, died Saturday, April 10, 2004, at Divine Providence Community Home in Sleepy Eye, surrounded by his family. Funeral services were held at St. Mary's Catholic Church on Wednesday, April 14, with interment in the church cemetery. Military rites were performed by the Sleepy Eye Honor Guard. Leonard Edward Neidecker was born on June 3, 1917, to Albert and Elizabeth (Wurzberger) Neidecker. He lived with his parents on their farm in Albin township, attended seven years of country school and one year at St. Mary's School in Sleepy Eye. He worked for different area farmers before joining the Army on March 3, 1941. He served overseas in the European Theater with Troop B 89th Division during World War II, receiving many medals of recognition. Following his honorable discharge on Oct. 25,1945, Leonard returned to Sleepy Eye. On June 14, 1950, he married Martha Lamecker, daughter of Alois and Annie (Portner) Lamecker, at Holy Trinity Cathedral in New Ulm. He worked at the Sleepy Eye Tile Yard, Sleepy Eye Grain Elevator and the Cargill Elevator until his retirement. Throughout his life, Leonard was involved with farming. Leonard was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, a lifetime member of the VFW and the Sleepy Eye Senior Citizen's Club. He enjoyed his family, especially spending time with his grandchildren. He liked playing cards, listening to old time music, dancing, watching Twins baseball games, playing with kids and visiting with friends.
Leonard is survived by his wife, Martha; daughter, Marsha and husband Donald Zemler of Sauk Centre, MN; granddaughter Marie Zemler Wu and husband Sherman of Baltimore, Md.; grandsons, Matt of St. Cloud and David of Minneapolis; sister, Madeline Evers of Bingham Lake; sister-in-law, Marie Reinhart of New Ulm; brother-in-law, Otto Lamecker, Sr. and wife Dolores of Lake Lillian; sister-in-law, Rose Hamann and husband Delton of Lafayette; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; children, Richard and Trisha; sister, Marcella and husband Lester Weller, Sr.; and brother-in-laws, LeRoy Reinhart and Ted "Jockey" Evers.
