Barbara Baumann
Barbara Jean Baumann, 78, Sleepy Eye, died Wednesday, April 12, 2006, at Divine Providence Community Home, Sleepy Eye. Visitation will be at Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye on Friday, April 21, from 4 to 8 p.m., and on Saturday, April 22, from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. There will be a parish prayer service at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Services will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, on Saturday, April 22, at 10 a.m. The clergy will be Mgsr. John Richter, with interment in the parish cemetery. Arrangements are with Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye. E-mail condolences may be sent to the family via barbarabaumann@sturmfh.com
Barbara was born May 9, 1927, in Minneapolis, the daughter of John and Clara (Majeski) Gromek. After John's death, Clara married William Richter. Barbara grew up in the Bird Island area and married Richard on Aug. 7, 1948, in Bird Island. They moved to Sleepy Eye in 1962 and raised seven children. Barbara did the bookkeeping and billing for her husband's business, Dick's Skelly Service. She was a member of Christian Mothers, Legion Auxiliary, Divine Providence Auxiliary and enjoyed bowling league, card club and working at the Nex-tu-new. She also spent many hours knitting, crocheting, cross-stitching, doing embroidery and needlepoint. She spent much of her summers canning her garden bounty, and never passed up a good dessert. She is survived by children and their spouses, Mary Baumann and Bill Durdin of Sleepy Eye, Doug and Avis Baumann of Minneapolis, Linda and Carl Erlandson of Jacksonville, N.C., Dan Baumann and Andrea Tauer of Minnetonka, Liz and Steve Koskiniemi of Staples and Andy and Mary Baumann of Green Bay, Wis.; 16 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sisters, Aggie and Jack Davidson of Sioux Falls, S.D., Patty O'Connor of Sioux Falls, S.D., Germaine and Jim Schaeffer of St. Paul and Kathleen and Don Neubauer of Bird Island; brothers, William “Butch” Richter of Granite Falls, Charles and Kay Richter of New Hope and Mgsr. John Richter of New Ulm. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Richard; son, John; and sisters, Margaret Schneider and Helen Schulte.

Delmar Riebel
Delmar Melvin Riebel, 80, Granada, formerly of Sleepy Eye, died Dec. 19, 2005, at Mountain View Care Center in Tucson, Ariz. Memorial services will be held at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Fairmont, on Saturday, April 29, at 1:30 p.m. Visitation with the family will take place at the church, one hour before the service.
Delmar was born May 11, 1925, in Sleepy Eye, to Joseph and Elsie (Zuhlsdorf) Riebel. He was united in marriage to Adeline Lendt on Oct. 25, 1945, at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye. They farmed near Evan for five years, then lived in Sleepy Eye, where Delmar was employed by Marshall Well's hardware store. In 1955, they moved to Fairmont, where Delmar continued employment at the Marshall Wells store. In 1959, they moved to a farm near Granada, where they farmed and continued to live after retirement. He was also a plummer. Delmar and Adeline spent many winters in Tuscon.
Survivors include: Adeline, his wife of 60 years; daughters, Eunice Riebel of New Ulm and Julie DuBois of Pinetop Ariz.; grandson, Jeremy Frese of Lewistown, Mont.; sister, Mildred Bond of Huntington Beach, Calif.; and son-in-law, John Carr of Pinetop, Ariz. Delmar was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Ronda Carr; son-in-law, Henry DuBois; stepfather; and three stepbrothers.

Richard Berkner
Richard Berkner, 70, passed away at his Mankato home on Wednesday, April 19, 2006. Mass of Christian Burial was Monday, April 24, at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church. Burial was in Woodland Hills Memorial Park. The family prefers memorials to be directed to the Harry Meyering Center of Mankato.
Richard was born Aug. 24, 1935, in Sleepy Eye, the son of Harold and Catherine (Huiras) Berkner. He attended St. Mary's Catholic High School and graduated with his class in 1953. He served in the US Army between January of 1954 and December of 1955. He began his career with Mettler Toledo Scale Service upon his discharge, and remained with them until his retirement in 1998. He was united in marriage to Barbara (Cords) Lindblom on Sept. 24, 1960, in Mankato. During his leisure time, he enjoyed traveling, camping, fishing, bowling, rockhounding, jewelry making, collecting antiques, bird watching, drinking coffee on his patio, and spending time with his family. He was a member of St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, VFW, Ducks Unlimited, Catholic Order of Foresters, and was involved with Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts.
Survivors include his children, Scott Richard Berkner of Hilton Head Island, S.C., Brian Anthony Berkner of Mankato, Staci Elizabeth (Jim) Smith of Cannon Falls and Garry Thomas (Jen) Berkner of Wanamingo; grandchildren, Evan Berkner of Hilton Head Island, S.C., Caitlyn Smith of Edina, Caleb Smith of Cannon Falls and Shayla, Cory and Lexi Berkner of Wanamingo; siblings, Randall Berkner of Sleepy Eye, Ramona Ricke of Blue Earth, Dave Runing of White Bear Lake and Curt Runing of Mesa, Ariz.; special friend and companion, Betty Dale of St. Peter; many caring cousins; nieces; and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Catherine; father, Harold; stepmother, Cecilia; wife, Barbara in 2005; brother, Myron; and sister, Barbara.
He will always be remembered for his sense of humor, his love and devotion to his family, and for his inspiring and courageous fight against the disease that finally took his life.

Catherine Mary Heymans
Catherine Mary Heymans passed away peacefully, April 20, 2009, one day before her 85th birthday, at St. Anne of Winona.
Born Catherine Mary Guldan on April 21, 1924, in Sleepy Eye, she graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Sleepy Eye and the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul, during WWII, with a degree in nursing. Known to her family and friends as Cathy, she married her high school sweetheart, Robert Heymans. They moved to Tonawanda, N.Y. and started a family. Her husband’s job would eventually lead them to settle in Colorado. Cathy loved Colorado and grew very fond of the Rocky Mountains. She had an engaging personality, a warm sense of humor and passed onto her children her love of the beauty in nature and her love of all animals, especially cats. In 1991, Cathy moved to Edina, to be closer to her grandchildren. She developed a close group of women friends whom she traveled with to Hawaii every year. Cathy claims that her time spent in Edina “were the best years of my life.” Cathy was a voracious reader and even more so after settling in at St. Anne’s. She was cared for at St. Anne’s for most of the past seven years where she met and grew close to many wonderful staff members. The people at St. Anne’s expressed their love and appreciation of her and the family is grateful for the excellent loving care she received there.
She is preceded in death by her parents; and daughter, Therese Heymans of Denver, Colo. She is survived by her older brother, John Guldan of Hudson Ohio; son, Mike (Kathleen) Heymans of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; daughter, Patt Nowfel of Aurora, Colo.; son, Jerry (Lois) Heymans of Winona; daughter, M'liss (Warren) Moon of Carnation, Wash.; and grandchildren, Blake Heymans, Denver, Colo., Ross Heymans, Winona, and Kylah and Cassidy Moon of Carnation, Wash.
Services are being planned in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado this fall when the Aspen trees change to a brilliant yellow.

Rosella M. Kuster
Rosella M. Kuester, was born May 1, 1925, the daughter of Roy and Annie (Weise) Strong in Sleepy Eye. She passed from this life on Wednesday, April 22, 2009, at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf, Iowa, having reached the age of 83 years, 11 months and 21 days.
Rosella married William A. Kuster on April 21, 1960, in Sleepy Eye. He preceded her in death on Oct. 23, 2004. Rosella retired from Farmall, Rock Island, Ill.
She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Davenport, Iowa. She enjoyed sewing, knitting and quilting. Rosella and Bill enjoyed fishing and traveling.
Rosella is survived and lovingly remembered by her daughters, Patricia Foor of Muscatine, Iowa, Mary Lavoie of Lexington, Ky. and Theresa Kuster of Oronoco; sons, William Kuster of Hampton, Va., Michael Kuster of Knoxville, Tenn., Thomas Kuster of Madrid, Iowa, Tim Kuster of Colorado, Allan Kuster of Reynolds, Ill. and John Kuster of Davenport, Iowa; brother, Lloyd Strong of Sleepy Eye; 14 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; sisters, Ellen Lux and Evangeline Bishop; and brothers, Elroy and Wilbert Strong.

Eldor Berg
Eldor Berg, 75, Essig, died Saturday, May 2, 2009, at his summer home in Pine River.
Mass of Christian Burial was 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 6, at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm with Monsignor John A. Richter celebrating the Mass.
Burial was in New Ulm Catholic Cemetery.
Full Military Honors were conducted at the cemetery by the New Ulm Area Comrades of Valor Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to N.U.A.C.S. or Volunteers for Seniors of Brown County.
Eldor Victor Berg was born Jan. 17, 1934, in New Ulm, to Roman A. and Elizabeth (Kral) Berg.
From 1952 to 1955, he served in the U.S. Army in Korea.
On Jan. 10, 1959, he was united in marriage to Lois Guggisberg at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in New Ulm.
Eldor had worked for 30 years at Kraft in New Ulm.
He enjoyed fishing, deer hunting, gardening, wood working and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Eldor was a member of the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm, St. Joseph’s Catholic Aid Council, D.A.V. Chaper 15 in New Ulm and the V.F.W. Post 800 in Sleepy Eye.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to N.U.A.C.S. or Volunteers for Seniors of Brown County.
Eldor is survived by his wife, Lois Berg of Essig; daughters and sons-in-law, Christine and Bob Ohnstad of Owatonna and Jean and Bill Berg of New Ulm; sons and daughters-in-law, Pat and Renae Berg of Essig, Larry Berg and his special friend, Karla Gordon of Mankato, Paul and Brenda Berg, Steve and Teresa Berg and Kenny and Carla Berg, all of New Ulm; 20 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; sisters and brothers-in-law, Arlene and Lewis Seifert of New Ulm and Ruth and Lester Helget of Sleepy Eye; brother and sister-in-law, Richard “Dick” and Joyce Berg of New Ulm; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Kevin Berg on Oct. 6, 2000; and a grandson, Dustin Herr in January of 2002.
