Dan 'Ike' Ikola
Dan "Ike" Ikola, 47, Mission Township, died Friday, August 17, at his home.
Dan "Ike" Ikola was born in Eveleth, January 14, 1954, to Harold and Jean Ikola. He attended the University of Minnesota in Duluth. He was married to Brenda (Darwin) in Georgetown, CO on May 13, 1991. Ten years ago, he returned with his family to Minnesota and purchased the SportsmanÕs Store in Mission, which they have owned and operated since.
Ike enjoyed motorcycling, playing pool, hunting and fishing, and spending time with friends and family. He was a wonderful father to Colbi, and will be remembered by many friends.
He is survived by his wife, Brenda Ikola; daughter Colbi, 11, at home; his mother Joan Ikola of Grand Marais; and a sister JoAnn (Greg) Olson of Duluth. His father preceded him in death.
Memorial services were August 22, 2001 at the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Crosslake.
Arrangements were with Brenny Funeral Chapel of Crosslake.

Alma 'Daisy' Matthews
Alma "Daisy" Matthews, 75, Pequot Lakes, died at her home on Friday, August 17, 2001
Alma Matthews was born in Pine River January 9, 1926, to Delbert E. and Jenny (Boyer) Brant. She completed her GED with a clerical cluster in Fargo, ND. She was married to Clayton Boyer on October 17, 1945, in Brainerd. Clayton died on January 17, 1962. Alma was married to Chester Matthews on February 18, 1992. She was again widowed on December 23, 1997. She lived with her son in Pequot Lakes. She was a member of the Poplar LadiesÕ Birthday Club, and the Senior Citizens Clubs in Motley and Pequot Lakes.
She is survived by her son, Daryl Boyer of Pequot Lakes; her daughter, Luana (Loni) Kaufman of Fargo, ND; three sisters, Evelyn Stang of Hemet, CA, Faith Dabill of Pine River, and Carol Holden of Finland, MN; a brother, Floyd Brant of Hemet, CA; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Her husbands, one sister, and three brothers preceded her in death.
Funeral services were August 22 at Mildred Bible Chapel in Backus. Private interment services will be at the Poplar Cemetery.
Brenny Funeral Chapel handled the arrangements.

Arlys McFeters
Arlys McFeters, 77, Crosslake, died Thursday, Aug. 16, 2001, at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Brainerd.
She was born June 14, 1924, in Anoka, to Robert and Alice (Grunquist) Beckenbach. She graduated from Anoka High School in 1942 and then from the Minneapolis School of Business. She married Lester McFeters on Oct. 6, 1943, in Anoka. They moved to New Brighton where she worked for Minnesota Fabric. In 1971, they moved to Crosslake and purchased the Ox Lake Tavern, which she owned and operated with her husband until their retirement in 1992. She served as secretary for the Food Shelf, had various chairwoman positions in the Lioness Club and was manager of the MenÕs Pool League for 25 years.
Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Lynn Jones, Breezy Point; four sons, Thomas McFeters, Indianapolis, John McFeters, Florence, Ala., Robert McFeters, Coon Rapids, and Tim McFeters, Ideal Corners; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a brother, Alan Beckenbach, Roseville.
A sister and two brothers died earlier.
Services were August 20 at the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Crosslake with the Rev. Mark Anderson officiating with burial in Pinewood Cemetery in Crosslake.

Helen (Woodhouse) Nielsen
Helen (Woodhouse) Nielsen, 67, New Hope, formerly of the Pillager area, died Monday, Aug. 13, 2001 at Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park.
Survivors include her husband, Clyde Nielsen, New Hope; a daughter, Lorrie Kummeth; a son, Steve Nielsen; a granddaughter; two brothers, Francis Woodhouse and Herbert Woodhouse, Sylvan Lake; and three sisters, Joyce Nygaard, Brainerd, Muriel Schiel, Rio Verde, Ariz., and Mavis Galligher, Baxter.
Her parents, Charles and Mabel Woodhouse, died earlier.
Services were Aug. 17 at House of Hope Lutheran Church, New Hope. Memorials are preferred to Methodist Hospital Hospice or House of Hope Lutheran Church.

Ora Woodrow Orth
Ora W. Orth, 87, Pine River, died Friday, August 17, 2001, at Innovis Hospital, Fargo, North Dakota.
Ora Woodrow Orth was born on August 2, 1914 in Austin, MN. He was the son of Henry and Mary (Davis) Orth. He was raised and educated in the area of his birth. He was united in marriage to Maurine Peterson on June 18, 1935, at Lansing, MN. Ora started farming in 1935 and during his life had farmed near the communities of Delvin, Wells, Gukeen and Freeborn. In 1963 they moved to Pine River. Maurine died on April 9, 1995. Ora was still involved in farming until he entered the hospital on July 14 of this year. Ora loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and enjoyed fishing, and was still hunting at age 86. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church, Pine River.
He is survived by his sons: Donald, Backus, Vernon (JoAnn) Nisswa, Larry (Mary) Backus, Marlen (Jane) Pine River, Jerald, Pine River, Michael (Joanne) Pine River; 24 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Bertha Yarwood and Gladys Swanson, both of Austin.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, sons: Ronald and LeRoy; grandchildren: Heidi and Debbie; sisters: Lola and Edna; brothers: Floyd, Glenn and Roy.
Funeral services were August 20, 2001 at First Lutheran Church, Pine River with burial in Pine Ridge Cemetery, Pine River, with Rev. John Twiton officiating.
Northland Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Benora (Hoff) Solomon
Benora (Bonnie) Solomon, 81, Thousand Oaks, CA, and summer resident of Crosslake, died July 28, 2001 after a long battle with cancer.
She was born March 27, 1920 in Pequot Lakes to Bottolf and Anna Hoff. She graduated from Pequot Lakes High School in 1938 and Eitel Hospital School of Nursing in Minneapolis in 1941. She was a stewardess with American Airlines from 1942 to 1944 when she married Jasper (J.S.) Solomon, a pilot with Trans World Airlines.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Tom and John Solomon; daughter, Peggy Lamy; grandsons, Douglas and Scott Solomon, Alex and Nicholas Lamy and sister, Grace Boe of Crosslake.
Her parents, brother, Avery Hoff and infant granddaughter, Christine Lamy preceded her in death.
A memorial service was held August 3 at Ascension Lutheran Church in Thousand Oaks, CA.

Helen Converse
Helen Converse, 81, Motley, died Monday, July 15, 2002, at the Staples Care Center.
She was born August 20, 1920, in Brainerd to Herman and Hazel (Milender) Allguer. She attended a country school in May Township in Cass County. She graduated from Motley High School in 1938. She married Ernest Converse on Feb. 9, 1942. For many years, she worked at El Ray, sewed for Munsingwear in Little Falls and farmed. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Motley, the Leader/Poplar Birthday Club and the Dutch Club.
Survivors include three daughters, Beverly Converse, Schaumburg, IL, Judy Marsh, Backus, and Patty Converse, Motley; a son, Larry Converse, Motley; her longtime friend, Ernest Converse Sr.; a sister, Evelyn White, Staples; 13 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
A sister, Ethel Wheeler; a brother, Virgil; a son, Ernest Jr.; and a grandson died earlier.

Myhrin ‘Mike’ Grudem
Myhrin “Mike” Grudem, 83, Crosslake, died Friday, July 19, 2002, at the Court Manor Nursing Home in Ashland, WI.
He was born March 31, 1919, in Clarkfield to Ingvald and Amanda (Johnson) Grudem. He graduated from Chippewa Falls High School. He attended Dunwoody Institute and earned a master plumber’s license. He married Stella W. Miller on Sept. 24, 1938. She died in 1998. In 1984, he retired in Crosslake. He served as a shipfitter in World War II with a land-based ship repair unit in Las Negras. He worked for Frudem Bros. Plumbing and Heating and served as president of the Master Plumbing Association of Minnesota and the National Association of Plumbing, Heating and Cooling Contractors. He was a member of the Crosslake Lutheran Church, the Shrine - Osman Temple Drum and Bugle Corps, the American Legion, the Lions Club, the Crosslake Snow-Goers Club and the Scottish Rite.
Survivors include two daughters, Sharon Rambo and Jacque Dallenbach; two sons, Jerome and Chuck Grudem; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Carol and Arlene; a brother, Arden; and a special friend, Virginia Rudquist.
Brothers Irvin and Vern died earlier.
Services were July 23 at Mission of the Cross Church in Crosslake.
Memorials are preferred to the Shriners Hospital for Children at 2025 East River Road, Minneapolis 55414.

Josephine Halverson
Josephine Halverson, 79, Channing, Mich., formerly of Nisswa, died Tuesday, July 16, 2002, in Rosemount.
Survivors include three sons, Henning Jr., Charles and Percy; a daughter, Rose Farr; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Vicki George, Rita Hanson, Clara Hilten and Sophia Doig.
Her husband, Henning Sr., died earlier.
Services were at White Funeral Home in Apple Valley with burial in Nisswa Cemetery.

Jane Jones
Jane Jones, age 47, of Pine River, died Sunday, July 14, 2002, at her home. She was born January 20, 1955 in Brainerd to Darold and Janet Larson.
She is survived by her son, Adrian Schaffer, of Grand Rapids.
Services will be at 11 am, Thursday, July 25, at Kline Funeral Home in Pine River with Pastor Mick Scott officiating.
Arrangements are with Kline Funeral Home in Pine River.

Robert Henry Juneau
Robert Henry Juneau, 66, of Hackensack, died Friday, July 19, 2002, at his home.
He was born Dec. 28, 1935, in Grand Forks, N.D., to Joseph and Irene (Hurst) Juneau. After graduating from high school and serving in the Army, he began a 37-year career as a fiber optic specialist with Bell Telephone and USWest. He married Kay Peterson on Jan. 5, 1968. The couple lived in New Hope until 1992 and then moved to Hackensack. He was a Golden Valley fireman.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, David and Scott Carlson, both of Orlando, FL, and Todd Juneau, Alexandria, VA; a sister, Patricia Vincent, Northfield; and four grandchildren.
His parents and a sister, Beverly, died earlier.
Services were July 21 at the Brenny Funeral Chapel, Baxter, with Pastor Rory Swenson officiating.
Memorials are preferred to St. Joseph’s Hospice in Park Rapids.

Robert Kommerstad
Robert Kommerstad, 75, Pasadena, CA, owner of Brainerd radio stations The Power Loon, KLIZ-FM, Froggy KFGI-FM, KVBR-AM and KLIZ-AM, died Thursday, June 11, 2002, in Pasadena, CA.
He purchased the Brainerd radio stations in April 1996 in conjunction with the purchase of KKWS-FM, KWAD-AM and KNSP-AM.
Survivors include his wife, Lila; and a daughter, Carol, British Columbia.
Private memorial services were held in California.
