Dale Cole

Pine River

Dale Cole, age 83, passed away Friday, Oct. 13, at his home. He was a resident of Bungo Township, rural Pine River, for more that 50 years. Born June 25, 1923 in Gillett Grove, Iowa to Clifford and Ida Mae (Blair) Cole. After graduation from Lake Center High School in 1941 he farmed with his parents in Iowa until 1952 when the family moved to Bungo Township. He married the love of his life Betty Lou Huffman on June 24, 1945.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years Betty; sons: Ray Cole of Corral de Tierra, Calif., George Cole of Cambridge; daughter, Janice Krick of Minneapolis; sister, Jeanette Silbaugh of Pine River; grandchildren: Laura, Daniel, Annerhe, and Emma.

Services will be 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 18 at Kline Funeral Home in Pine River with Pastor Judith Clark officiating. Burial will follow at Pine Ridge Cemetery, Pine River. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

Arrangements are with Kline Funeral Home, Pine River.

Harlan Houg

Pine River

Harlan Houg, age 87, of Pine River, passed away Monday, Oct. 2 at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Brainerd. He was born December 14, 1918 in Pine River to Marius and Minna Houg.

Harlan was in the U.S. Army during WWII serving in the Philippines. He worked at the CCC Camp at Itasca State Park, and was employed at Gardiner Hardware in Pine River for over 50 years. He was a retired member of the Pine River Volunteer Fire Department, former member of the American Legion Post 613 in Pine River and VFW Post 3839 in Jenkins. He was also a member of the Civil Air Patrol, Pine River Sportsmen's Club and Pine River Flying Club. He was an avid hunter and fisherman who loved the outdoors.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley; daughter, Alana Santana of Duluth; son, Peter Houg of Pine River; sisters: Opal Johnson of Pine River, Muriel Buss of Pequot Lakes, Cora Smith of Springfield, Tenn.; four grandchildren, one great-grandchild; sisters-in-law: Josephine Fick and Carol Burk (Robert).

He was preceded in death by his parents, and three brothers: Ellsworth (Bud), Clifford and Kenneth.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the American Cancer Society or donor's choice.

Services were Oct. 7 at Kline Funeral Home, Pine River with Pastor Judith Clark officiating. Burial was in Minnesota State Veteran's Cemetery at Camp Ripley. Arrangements were with Kline Funeral Home, Pine River.

Paul Ellsworth Day

Menahga

Paul Ellsworth Day, age 87, of Menahga, died Tuesday, February 28, 2006, in Menahga. Paul will be remembered by his special friend, Betty Reul of Verndale; his children: Sharon (Rodney) Johnson of Blue River, WI, Roger (Nancy) Day of Menahga, Rodney (Dorothy) Day of Backus and Dennis (Linda) Day of Menahga; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and his sister, Daisy Jacob of Menahga. He was preceded in death by his wife, Minnie; four brothers and two sisters.
Services were held March 4, 2006 at the United Methodist Church in Menahga.

Arrangements were provided by Cardini-Behrens Funeral Home of Menahga.

Virginia 'Ginger' Steuber

Deerwood

Virginia "Ginger" Steuber, 50, of Deerwood, died March 5 at her home. She was born Feb. 17, 1956 in Grand Forks, N.D. to William and Virginia (Weisbrod) Steuber. She is survived by her parents, W. G. "Bill" and Virginia "Ginny" Steuber, Deerwood; brother, Col. R. George (Patricia) Steuber, Dothan, Alabama; sisters, Elizabeth (Anthony) Del Vecchio, Allentown, PA, Carrie (Dick Rostad) Ruud, Breezy Point; nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Thursday, March 9, at Mission of the Cross Lutheran Church, Crosslake. Burial will be at the Oak Knoll Cemetery in Princeton at 1 p.m. Friday. Friends may call on Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. at the Koop Funeral Home in Crosby and one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday. If so desired, memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers.

Charles J. D. 'Charlie' Schwartz

Crosslake

Charles J. D. "Charlie" Schwartz, 79, of Crosslake, formerly of Minneapolis, died recently.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Louie and Lena; and a son, Thomas. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Charlotte; sons, Michael and wife Jonni (Erin and Cara), Patrick (Louis and Trevor); daughters, Ann Richter and husband Fred (Alex and Dani), Mary Polidoro and husband Geoff (Nick and Tony); daughter-in-law, Pam Schwartz (Jessi, Katie and Becky); many other loving relatives and dear friends.

Charlie was raised in Minneapolis and attended De LaSalle High School. A recipient of the Purple Heart USMC WWII and retired Divisional Vice President with IDS/American Express - 34 years.

Mass of Christian Burial was held March 6 at Christ the King Catholic Church in Minneapolis, with interment in Fort Snelling.

Morris Nilsen Chapel handled the arrangements.

Yerda E. Gross

Pequot Lakes

Yerda E. Gross, age 93, of Pequot Lakes, passed away Friday, March 3 at the Heritage House in Pequot Lakes. Born March 23, 1912 in Crow Wing County to Louis and Anna Magnuson. She married Ernest Gross on June 5, 1935 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Platte Lake.
She was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Pequot Lakes where she enjoyed participating in the church's Quilting Group. She loved cooking, especially baking for her grandchildren.

She is survived by her sons: Herbert Gross (Shirley) of Sartell, Stuart Gross (Carol) of Spring Valley; daughter, Trudy Jurchen (Mark) of Pequot Lakes; seven grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest, on June 7, 1987, her brothers, Edwin and Lawrence, and sister, Hannah.

Memorials may be sent to Our Savior's Church Quilting Group or organization of the donor's choice.

Services will be 1 p.m. on Thursday, March 9 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Pequot Lakes with Rev. Dr. David Stevens officiating. Burial will follow at Our Savior's Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.

Arrangements are with Kline Funeral Home, Pine River.

Edna Clausen

Pine River

Edna D. Clausen, 94, died Monday, February 27, 2006, at St. Joseph's Medical Center, Brainerd. Funeral services were held March 3, at Willim-St. Onge Family Funeral Home, Pine River. Burial was in the Jenkins Cemetery.
Edna Miller was born April 12, 1911, in Grand Forks, N.D. As a young child her family moved to the Hackensack area. Edna was united in marriage to Clarence W. Clausen on April 12, 1950, in Minneapolis. In 1959 they moved to Denver, CO and worked there until 1970, at which time they returned to the lakes area. Clarence died in September of 2004. Edna had been a resident at Whispering Pines Good Samaritan Center in Pine River during the last years of her life. Edna was a member of the Jehovah's Witnesses Kingdom Hall in Jenkins and had also helped build the old Kingdom Hall that used to be in Pine River. Edna enjoyed gardening and the outdoors.

She is survived by her good friend and caregiver, Len Nelson, and her many friends from the Kingdom Hall in Jenkins. Her husband and stepson preceded Edna in death.

Gail M. Geroux-Milner

Oklahoma

Gail M. Geroux-Milner, 60, died March 3, 2006 in Ada, Oklahoma. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, March 9 at Willim-St. Onge Family Funeral Home in Pequot Lakes, with Father George Zeck officiating. Burial will follow in the Pine Wood Cemetery, Crosslake.
Arrangements are with the Willim-St. Onge Funeral Home in Pequot Lakes.

Richard B. Beeson

1925 - 2005 Nisswa

Richard "Dick" B. Beeson, Sr., age 80, of Nisswa, completed his journey on this earth on March 7, 2005. Dick died peacefully amid his family at St. Joseph's Hospital in Brainerd, Minnesota.

Dick was born in Wahpeton, North Dakota on February 20, 1925. He spent his years growing up in Breckenridge, Minnesota and Minneapolis. He graduated from Southwest High School in 1943. After high school, Dick joined the Army Air Corps as a 2nd Lieutenant and served as a B-29 pilot, where he remained until 1945. After World War II he completed his service and attended the University of Minnesota under the GI Bill. In 1946, he married Lorraine Mann.

Dick lived in Minneapolis until his retirement from 3M and his own business, TV Times, in 1989. At that time, he and Lorraine fulfilled their dream of building a lake home of their own on Lake Edward in the Brainerd Lakes area. They enjoyed many years of sharing their home with friends and family alike. Through the selfless efforts of his daughter Barbara and her husband Alex, their dear neighbors Jeff and Patrice Stefans and Jeff and Patty Meier, along with the other Beeson children and many friends, Dick was able to spend his last years in the comfort of his home nearby the family and lake that he loved.

Dick served as president of the Thirty Lakes Water Shed District board for the last nine years. Dick helped guide the board into becoming an important ally in maintaining water quality in the lakes he loved. He was passionate about his work and served loyally, even as his health declined.

Dick was a man who loved many things in his life. Most important to him was his family. He was also a great lover of the many family pets that shared his home, especially his cat Louie. He loved all things of nature, crossword puzzles, and sing-alongs.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Maris, Sr. and Lena Beeson (nee Byerly); sister Alta Adams, sister Marian Anderson, brother Maris, Jr., brother Robert, sister Margaret Rothausen, and infant brother Donald. He will be missed by many, but mostly by his faithful wife of 59 years, Lorraine, and his loving children Barbara Bogdanovich and her husband Alex of Pequot Lakes, Mary Williams and her husband Don of Urbandale, Iowa, Richard B. Beeson, Jr. and his wife MaryDon of Saint Paul, Donna Hoelke and her husband Dave of Excelsior, Daniel Beeson and his wife Barbara of Woodbury; grandchildren Joshua Erickson and his fiance Chalice Davison, Emily and Meredith Beeson, Drew and Christopher Beeson, Alex, Christian and Lissa Hoelke.

Memorials may be given in Dick's name to St. Joseph's Hospital or to Thirty Lakes Watershed District, both in Brainerd.

A memorial service was at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Pequot Lakes. Inurnment took place at Pelican Woods Cemetery in Breezy Point.

Mildred F. Waller

1920 - 2005 Brainerd

Mildred "Mid" F. Waller, age 85, resident of Brainerd, Minn., passed away Friday, March 11, 2005, at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Brainerd.
Mildred was born in Hettinger, N.D., on Feb. 15, 1920. Mid graduated from Algona, Iowa, High School and began working at the Upper Des Moines Publishing Co. where she met her future husband, Russell B. Waller. They were married Jan. 22, 1941, in Algona at her parents' home.

She devoted her life to being a wife and mother to five children -- Pamela Grace Franzen, Dennis Russell (Glynn), Thomas Marvin, Steven Bliss (Nancy), and John "Jack" Richard (Laurie Gaiser); 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, all of whom survive her.

Mid lived most of her life in Algona before moving with Russ to a lake home in Crosslake, Minn. Russ preceded her in death on March 13, 1987. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Dennis and Clara Traeger Pratt Hobson, step-father Harold Hobson, and two sisters and two brothers.

Funeral services were March 15 at Nelson-Doran Funeral Home in Brainerd, Minn., with the Rev. Dr. Paul Fruth officiating. Interment was in Pinewood Cemetery in Crosslake.

Ralph L. Fischer

1923 - 2005 Pine River

Ralph Lloyd Fischer, age 81, of Pine River, passed away Monday, March 14, 2005 at Whispering Pines Good Samaritan Center in Pine River. He was born May 14, 1923 in Princeton, MN to Fred and Edna (Bolter) Fischer.
He is survived by his wife, Pat of Pine River; daughters: Susan Mongan of Pine River and Deborah Kirk of Brainerd; sons: Steven Baker of Pequot Lakes and Kenton Fischer of Pine River; 6 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild; sisters: Marge Thompson of Alexandria and LaVerne Lamp of Ogilvie; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Harold Fischer.

Services will be 1:30 pm on Tuesday, March 22 at Whispering Pines Good Samaritan Center in Pine River with Pastor Paul Jensen officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the service. Arrangements are with Kline Funeral Home, Pine River.

Mavis Hegstrom

1925 - 2005 former Swanburg resident

Mavis (Peterson) Hegstrom of Stanwood, WA passed on to her eternal mansion on March 10, 2005.

Mavis was born January 10, 1925 to Marvin and Nellie (Hamlet) Peterson of Swanburg, Minnesota. She lived with her family in a rural community filled with her 40 cousins. She graduated from Pine River High School and later earned a 2-year teaching certificate from Bemidji State Teachers College. She taught elementary school in Mildred, Pequot Lakes, Howard Lake and Watertown. She met her husband, Eldon Hegstrom, when they were both teaching in Watertown. They were married in Minneapolis on August 5, 1951. Mavis chose to be a homemaker after the birth of her first child; she is the mother of five children.

Mavis was very active in the Lutheran church in Bible studies, teaching Sunday school and singing in the choir. She was a 4H leader in Breckenridge. She was an artist who painted in oils and water colors, crocheted and did embroidery.

Mavis was preceded in death by her parents, Marvin and Nellie, and her sister, Jean Kleen.

She is survived by he husband, Eldon of Warm Beach, WA; her children, Susan (Lind) of Lake Stevens, WA, Debra of St. Paul, MN, Linda of East Lansing, MI, Nancy (Masoner) of Lynnwood, WA, and Eric of Ramsey, MN; her 10 grandchildren; her brothers Howard of Swanburg, MN and Donald of Pine River, MN and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service will be held Friday, March 18, 10:00 AM, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 9613 - 20th Street SE, Everett, Wash. Interment will be at Tahoma National Cemetery, Kent, WA.

Arrangements under the direction of Gilbertson Funeral Home, Stanwood.

Doris H. Tuomi

1935 - 2005 Pequot Lakes

Doris H. Tuomi, age 70, of Pequot Lakes, passed away March 9, 2005.
She was preceded in death by her father Clarnece Hughes.

She is survived by her husband of over 50 years, Willard; daughters Jean Lemke and Susan (Jeff) Kempf; grandchildren David and Michael Lemke, Tristin and Alan Kempf; mother Mary; sister Jean O'Connor; many loving relatives and friends.

She was a past president of the Crosslake Women's Investment Club and a P.E.O. member. She was a secretary of the Modern Language Department at Carleton College.

Memorial service will be 2 pm, Friday, March 18 at Crosslake Lutheran Church, 35960 County Road 66, Crosslake. Memorials preferred to Habitat for Humanity.

Conway Tweedy

Manhattan Beach

Conway Tweedy, 85, of Manhattan Beach, died Tuesday, May 30, 2006 at Whispering Pines Good Samaritan Center in Pine River.
He is survived by his wife, Vivian (Satherlie) Tweedy; three sons: Dale of Moscow, Russia, Carson and Clay of Mound; two daughters: Amber (Tweedy) Dapkus and Dave of Lewiston, Crystal Tweedy of Mound; three granddaughters: Mariah Tweedy of Mound, Sulie (Dapkus) Horner and Steve of Winona, Dasha Tweedy of Moscow, Russia; two great-grandchildren: Amanda and Stewart Tweedy; two stepchildren: Janis (Satherlie) Allen and Paul of Manhattan Beach, David Satherlie of Fifty Lakes; five step-grandchildren: Shari (Rubey) Curell and Larry of Backus, Scott Rubey of Manhattan Beach, Graham Satherlie and Meggan Satherlie, both of Fifty Lakes, Susan (Lestina) Gudim and Chris of Isanti; eight step-great-grandchildren: Nichole and Emily Weber of Backus, Darrian, Denika, Taylor, Dakota, Bailey and Ty Gudim of Isanti.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Lou, sister, Virginia Tweedy and two brothers, Larue and Newton.

Conway installed radio equipment on B24s during WWII and worked as a diesel mechanic with Pratts Trucking Express Company until he retired. He then joined the Peace Corp at age 60 and worked at a boys' camp in Honduras. He was known as "Conway can fix anything." Conway was a charter member of Minnesota Wood Carvers Association and the National Wood Carvers Association. He won numerous awards for his wood carvings.

Arrangements were with Kline Funeral Home, Pine River.
