Melinda Holland

WARROAD, Minn. -- Melinda Holland, 85, St. Cloud, Minn., formerly of Warroad, died Friday, Sept. 18, 1998, in St. Cloud.

Melinda Magdelina Otto was born June 3, 1913, the daughter of William and Emma (Kisch) Otto, in Brownfield, Alta. She grew up and attended school in Radium, Minn., near Warren. She moved with her family to Winner, Minn., known as Beltrami Island State Forest. She married Harry Holland on Nov. 13, 1934, in Winner. They moved to Warroad in 1936, where they farmed. They moved to Aldridge, Minn., in 1950, before returning to Warroad in 1973, after their retirement. They moved to Motley, Minn. Harry Holland died March 27, 1997.

She is survived by sons, James (Bonnie), Blaine, Minn., and Calvin (Ruth), Coon Rapids, Minn.; daughters, Dorthy (Paul) Johnson, Golden Valley, Minn., Virginia (Clark) Rundell, Standish, Maine, Harriet Martini, Pine City, Minn., Marjorie (Donald) Samborski, Blaine, and Lorreen Hall, Elk River, Minn.; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a sister, Amelia Janson, Warroad; and sisters-in-law, Alice Otto, Margaret Otto, Phyllis Otto, all of Warroad, Hattie Otto, Ray, Minn., and Lorraine Otto, Big Sand, Mont.

She was preceded in death by brothers, George, Steve, Martin, Bill, Juilus, Ernest, August, Robert and Albert; and two sisters, Emma and Lenora.

Services: 10 a.m. Tuesday, Zion Lutheran Church, Warroad.

Visitation: 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, in Helgeson Funeral Chapel, in Warroad.

Burial: America Cemetery, Warroad.

Emelinda Drown

BAGLEY, Minn. -- Emelinda Drown, 95, Bagley, died Thursday, Sept. 17, 1998, in Greensview Health Care Center, Bagley.

Emelinda Bergstrom was born May 8, 1903, the daughter of Nels and Sara Brita (Andersdotter) Bergstrom, in Lincoln Township, Marshall County, Minn. They moved to Roseau, Minn., in 1912. She married Francis Drown on May 6, 1921, in Roseau. They moved to Bagley in 1981, alternately living in Bagley and Roseau until moving to Good Samaritan Center, Clearbrook, Minn., in January 1991, and to Sheltering Oaks Home, Roseau, in October 1992. She returned to Good Samaritan Center, Clearbrook, in 1993, and to Greenview Health Care Center, Bagley, in December 1994. Francis Drown died March 31, 1996.

She is survived by daughters, Margaret (Vern) Copes, Bemidji, and Florence (James) Dahlen, Roseau; a son, Gordon (Fern), Bagley; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Berean Baptist Church, Bagley.

Visitation: One hour before services in the church.

Burial: Nora Township Cemetery, Bagley.

Peter Henderson

BAGLEY, Minn. -- Peter Henderson, 72, Bagley, died Thursday, Sept. 17, 1998, in Greensview Health Care Center, Bagely.

Peter Henderson was born Aug. 5, 1926, the son of Peter and Ina (Findlay) Henderson, in Glasgow, Scottland. He was raised in Green point Brooklyn, N.Y., and became a U.S. citizen. He served in the U.S. Army. He married Irene Kaczanowski on Jan. 23, 1954, in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. They moved to Westbury, Long Island, N.Y., in 1956. They retired and moved to Bagley in 1996. They owned a delicatessen in Plainview, Long Island.

He is survived by his wife and a daughter, Denise Ann (Bob) Howard, Bagley.

Services: 2: 30 p.m. Monday, St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Bagley.

Visitation: 2 to 7 p.m. Saturday, and 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Cease Family Funeral Home, Bagley, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery.

LaVella Choc

LENGBY, Minn. -- LaVella Choc, 70, Lengby, died Tuesday, Sept. 15, 1998, at home.

LaVella Ihrke was born July 27, 1928, the daughter of Ralph and Gladys (Bury) Ihrke, in Butler, S.D. She lived in northern Minnesota and attended several schools, including Lengby, Kelliher, Saum and Lake of the Woods, Minn. She lived on the family farm near Lengby until moving to Minneapolis to attend the Franklin School of Nursing. She married Archie Choc on June 13, 1949, in Lengby. She worked as a nurse in Bagley, Fosston and Mahnomen, Minn. She cooked at the Job Corps in Mahnomen before starting work in Mahnomen as a nurse for the Mahnomen Health Center in 1960. She moved to the nursing home to work and retired in 1989.

She is survived by her husband; a son, James (Cindy), Lengby; a daughter, LaVonne Choc-Schroeder, Largo, Fla.; three grandchildren; a brother, Arles (Margaret), Lengby; sisters, Lillian (August) Gitz, Shevlin, Minn., and Phyllis (Clifford) Van de Linden, Rexburg, Idaho; and a sister-in-law, Betty Ihrke, Lengby.

She was preceded in death by two infant children and a brother, Charles.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Nee-Gon-Nee Lutheran Church, Roy Lake, Minn.

Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. today, Mattson Funeral Home, Mahnomen.

Burial: Lengby City Cemetery.

Hilda Salvhus

ERSKINE, Minn. -- Hilda Salvhus, 89, Erskine, died Sunday, Sept. 13, 1998, in First Care Hospital, Fosston, Minn.

Hilda Crystal Dahl was born Jan. 3, 1998, the daughter of Rendick and Helen Dahl, in Gully, Minn., where she attended school. She worked on the family farm and several jobs for the people of Gully. In 1932, she worked for Osmund Salvhus, and they married on Sept. 15, 1934, in Gully. In 1943, they purchased a farm in Clearwater County. They moved to Erskine in 1985. She entered Pioneer Memorial Care Center in 1991.

She is survived by a daughter, Mavis Schledewitz, Sidney, Mont.; sons, Willie (Helene), Bagley, Minn., Kenneth, Libby, Mont., Jerry, Leesville, La., Duane (Nancy), Chester, Mass., Elroy and Orlen (Dorothy), both of East Grand Forks, Norman, Cloquet, Minn., and Clayton, McIntosh, Minn.; 30 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Bernice Riley; a sister; and two brothers.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Our Savior's Lutheran Church, McIntosh.

Visitation: 2 to 4 p.m. today, Pioneer Memorial Care Center.

Burial: Our Savior's Lutheran Cemetery (Carlin-Hoialmen, McIntosh and Erskine).

Russell 'Russ' Bjornerud

FOSSTON, Minn. -- Russell "Russ" Bjornerud, 71, Fosston, died Tuesday, Sept. 15, 1998, in First Care Nursing Home, Fosston.

Russell Dennis Bjornerud was born Sept. 20, 1926, the son of Albert St. and Gena (Haltli) Bjornerud, in Fosston, where he graduated from high school in 1944. He joined the U.S. Army in March 1945. He was discharged in October 1946. He attended Bemidji State University from 1947 to 1948. He married Betty Bakken on Jan. 1, 1949, in Fosston. He and his father owned the Fosston Cleaners from 1949 to 1970. In 1964, he became a letter carrier for the U.S. Post Office in Fosston. He retired in 1986. He drove school bus for 35 years.

He is survived by his wife; a son, Rick (Sandy), Fosston; daughters, Renae (Ed) Schultz, Winger, Minn., and Jayne Darby, Minneapolis; nine grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and brothers, Albert Jr., and Roy (Lillian), both of Fosston, and Jim (Gloria), Menomonie, Wis.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Violet Rossell; and an infant sister.

Services: 3 p.m. Friday, Hope Lutheran Church, Fosston.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. today, with a 4: 30 p.m. prayer service, Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home, Fosston, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Hope Lutheran Cemetery.

Military Rites: Tangen-Walstrom American Legion Post #114, Fosston.

Sheldon Sandberg

KARLSTAD, Minn. -- Sheldon Sandberg, 84, Karlstad, died Friday, Sept. 4, 1998, in Karlstad Memorial Nursing Center.

Sheldon Uno Sandberg was born May 28, 1914, Alfred and Hannah (Swanson) Sandberg, in Tegner Township, Kittson County, Minn. He grew up and attended schools in Kennedy and Karlstad, Minn. In the 1930s, he worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps in Bena, Minn. He later worked for Kiene Farms, Kennedy. He married Lorraine Pearson on Oct. 15, 1958, at Lake Bronson, Minn. They lived and farmed near Karlstad until 1969, when they moved into Karlstad. He worked for Arctic Enterprises, Karlstad.

He is survived by his wife; daughters, Stacey Pagnac, Stephen, Minn., and Kristen Sandberg, Rolla, N.D.; three grandchildren; and a sister, Alpha Schulte, Alexandria, Minn.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Ardine and Roger; and sisters, Edna, Una and Adeleen.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Bethel Lutheran Church, Karlstad.

Visitation: After 5 p.m. Monday, in Collins Funeral Home, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Karlstad Cemetery.

Jeanne P. Hollands

FISHER, Minn. -- Jeanne P. Hollands, 81, Fisher, died Friday, Sept. 4, 1998, at home.

Jeanne P. Quigley was born April 23, 1917, the daughter of Frank and Bridgett (Logan) Quigley, in Crookston. She attended school in Fisher and graduated from high school in Crookston. She married Ray Hollands on Nov. 24, 1936, in Fisher, where they lived and farmed. He preceded her in death.

She is survived by a daughter, Teri (Rod) Engel, Fisher; a son, Merle (Pat) Fisher; a daughter-in-law, Kathleen Hollands, Grand Forks; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Bill; a grandson; sister, Betty; and a brother, Virgil.

Services: 10 a.m. Monday in St. Francis Catholic Church, Fisher.

Visitation: 2 to 4 p.m. today, with a 3: 30 p.m. prayer service, in Stennes Funeral Home, East Grand Forks.

Burial: Greenwood Cemetery, Fisher.

Adolph Hofstad

OKLEE, Minn. -- Adolph Hofstad, 88, Oklee, died Saturday, Sept. 5, 1998, at home.

Adolph Hofstad was born April 19, 1910, the son of Rolf and Anne (Nygaard) Hofstad, in Equality Township, Red Lake County, Minn. He worked and farmed in Montana and North Dakota and on the family farm in 1930. He married Mavis Anderson (Fore) on Jan. 17, 1939, in Oklee. They moved to Montana in the spring of 1939 and returned in the fall. They lived on the farm, which he purchased in 1942. In 1951, he moved to Cudahy, Wis., where he worked at Ladish Manufacturing in processing until retiring in 1972. He moved back to Oklee, where he had lived since. Mavis Hofstad died May 30, 1967.

He is survived by a daughter, Shirley (Bob) Simpson, Cudahy; sons, Gene, South Milwaukee, Wis., and Keith, Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; and a sister, Ragna Gunderson, Oklee.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Martin, Grunde, Grandy, Iven, and Paul; and sisters, Anne and Myrtle.

Services: 10: 30 a.m. Wednesday in Zion Lutheran Church, Oklee.

Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, in Petterson Funeral Home, Red Lake Falls, Minn., and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Forest Hill Cemetery, Oak Creek, Wis.

Edla Winberg

WARREN, Minn. -- Edla Winberg, 96, Bozeman, Mont., formerly of Warren, died Sunday, Nov. 22, 1998, at home.

Edla Amelia Nylen was born Sept. 22, 1902, the daughter of Nils and Annie (Lindstrom) Nylen, in Argyle, Minn., where she graduated from high school. She attended Moorhead State University. She married Leonard Winberg on June 27, 1929. She taught for 25 years in Warren. Leonard Winberg died April 2, 1954.

She is survived by a daughter, Bunny "Lou Berne" (Dale) Nuss, Bozeman; and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Alma Haugen.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Grace United Methodist Church, Warren.

Visitation: 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Quanrud-DuBore Funeral Home, Warren, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Greenwood Cemetery, Warren.
