Alvida Salte

ERSKINE, Minn. -- Alvida Salte, 92, Erskine, died Monday, Aug. 31, 1998, in Pioneer Memorial Care Center, Erskine.

Alvida Holmvik was born Sept. 10, 1905, the daughter of Peter and Sigrid (Noss) Holmvik, in Bear Park Township, Polk County, near Bejou, Minn. She attended school in Norman County, Minn., and high school in Grand Forks, graduating in 1924. From 1927 to 1930, she taught elementary school near Bottineau, N.D. In 1932, she graduated from Lutheran Bible Institute in Minneapolis. From 1938 to 1944, she served as missionary in Columbia, South America under the Celmosa Mission. She married Trygve Salte on Dec. 3, 1940, in Columbia. He died in 1944. She moved to Bear Park Township to live with her parents. In 1951, she moved with her parents to Winger, Minn., where she cared for them. She worked as a secretary at the Pioneer Memorial Care Center. From 1959 to 1979, she worked as a secretary/treasurer for the Latin American Lutheran Mission, until her retirement. In 1991, she moved to Valley Homes, Thief River Falls and then to Pioneer Memorial Care Center.

She is survived by a daughter, Ragnhild (Roy) Olsen, Mount Arlington, N.J.; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a brother, Herman, Fertile, Minn.

She was preceded in death by brothers, Selmer, Myhre, and Alton; a foster brother, Peder Pederson; and sisters, Olga Christianson and Marie Schornack.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Dovre Free Lutheran Church, Winger.

Visitation: 4 to 9 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Mattson Funeral Chapel, Winger, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Faaberg Lutheran Cemetery, Rindal, Minn.

Pauline Chwialkowski

STEPHEN, Minn. -- Pauline Chwialkowski, 93, Stephen, Minn., died Tuesday, Nov. 17, 1998, in North Valley Health Center, Warren.

Pauline Benke was born Feb. 9, 1905, the daughter of Nick and Julia (Gonshorowski) Benke, in Stephen. She married Peter Chwialkowski on Oct. 25, 1926, in Argyle, Minn. They made their home in Strandquist, Minn., and farmed. In 1963, they retired from farming and moved to Stephen. Peter died Dec. 29, 1974.

She is survived by sons, David and Ralph, both of Fargo; daughters, Lucille Watson, San Antonio, Texas, Julie (Richard) Pawloski, Stephen, Virginia Knoll, Phoenix, Marge (Melroy) Clark, Fargo; and Anne (Fredric) Billings, Lake Bronson, Minn.; a daughter-in-law, Mary Ann Chwialkowski, Stephen; 24 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a stepbrother, Harry Benke, Minneapolis; and a stepsister, Gertrude Stalock, Stephen.

She was preceded in death by sons, Eugene and Edmund; and stepbrothers, George Benke and Adolph Benke.

Services: 10: 30 a.m. Saturday, St. Stephen Catholic Church.

Visitation: 6: 30 to 8 p.m. today, with a 7: 30 p.m. prayer service, and one hour before services all in the church.

Burial: St. Stephen Cemetery.

Louise Henderson

Louise Henderson, 99, Long Lake, Minn., formerly of Grand Forks, died Tuesday, Nov. 17, 1998, at Hillcrest Nursing Home, Wayzata, Minn.

Louise Kohnen was born Oct. 20, 1899, the daughter of Lena and Nicholas Kohnen, in Long Lake, where she attended school. She married Gilbert Henderson on March 8, 1922, in Wayzata. He died in 1954. She moved to Grand Forks in 1975. She lived in Tufte Manor and Almonte Nursing Home and was evacuated during the Flood of 1997 to Hillcrest Nursing Home, Wayzata.

She is survived by a daughter, Shirley May (Ray) Bostrom, Grand Forks; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, James; brothers, John, Ed and Frank; and sisters, Margaret, Grace and Maime.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Rettinger Funeral Home, Long Lake.

Visitation: One hour before services in the funeral home.

Burial: Union Cemetery, Long Lake.

Bessie Hegg

LENGBY, Minn. -- Bessie Hegg, 73, Ellsworth, Maine, formerly of Lengby, died Wednesday, Nov. 18, 1998, at Ellsworth Hospital.

Bessie M. Scheff was born Oct. 21, 1925, the daughter of Herbert and Mary (Meschke) Scheff, in Fortuna, N.D. She married Nordahl Hegg. She farmed in Mahnomen, Minn., and moved to Lengby, where they owned Lengby Hartz. She attended nursing school and worked at Clearwater County Hospital, Bagley, Minn. She moved to Lamoine, Maine, 25 years ago. She worked as a licensed practical nurse at local nursing homes and hospitals.

She is survived by a son, Herbert (Jackie), Lengby; a daughter, Renna Hegg, Ellsworth; three grandchildren; a great-grandson; brothers, Rueben "Chub" and Albert "Pete," both of Mahnomen; and a sister, Helen Grove, Staples, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her husband; sisters, Lottie and Mildred; and brothers, Harold and John.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Fridhem Lutheran Church, Lengby.

Burial: Riverside Cemetery, Mahnomen, Minn. Memorials are suggested to charity of donors choice (Carlin-Hoialmen, Fosston, Minn.)

Anders Kleppe and Arla Kleppe

GONVICK, Minn. -- Anders Kleppe, 2, and Arla Kleppe, 4, Gonvick, died Wednesday, Nov. 18, 1998, at Clearwater Memorial Hospital, as the result of a drowning accident.

Arla Kleppe was born July 21, 1994, and Anders Kleppe was born Feb. 26, 1996, the children of Arne and Carol Kleppe, in Bagley.

They are survived by their parents; grandparents, Erma Carlson and Roy Kleppe, both of Clearbrook; and great-grandmother, Mae Cairncross, Atwater, Minn.

They were preceded in death by a grandfather and grandmother.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Elim Lutheran Brethren Church, Clearbrook.

Visitation: 7 to 8 p.m. today, with an 8 p.m. family service, Cease Family Funeral Home, Bagley, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Elim Lutheran Cemetery, Clearbrook.

Annabelle Severn

BAUDETTE, Minn. -- Annabelle Severn, 92, Baudette, died Tuesday, Dec. 15, 1998, in Lakewood Care Center, Baudette, where she had lived the past few years.

Annabelle Kelly was born June 9, 1906, the daughter of Henry and Nancy (Griffin) Kelly, in Williams, Minn. She grew up on Graceton, Minn. She married George Severn on June 26, 1930, in Baudette. They moved to Williams. They purchased the Grand Theater in Baudette. In 1934, they moved to Baudette. George Severn died in 1969. She sold the theater in 1972.

She is survived by a daughter, Shirlee (Ronald Clair) Olson, Renton, Wash.; a son, George (Carol), Baudette; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a grandson; sisters, Hazel Anderson and Pearl Torner; and brothers, Floyd, Claude and Austin.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday in First Congregational Church, Baudette.

Visitation: One hour before services in the church.

Burial: Elm Park Cemetery, Baudette (Helgeson, Baudette).

Anna B. LeVoy

BAUDETTE, Minn. -- Anna B. LeVoy, 93, Baudette, died Tuesday, Dec. 15, 1998, in Lakewood Care Center, Baudette, where she had lived since October 1997.

Anna Brita Johnson was born the daughter of Carl and Caroline (Mattson) Johnson in Fargo. She grew up in Ray, N.D., where she graduated from high school in 1923. She taught school in North Dakota. She moved to Baudette in the late 1930s. She was a store clerk for C.J. Olson Store in Baudette through the 1930s. In the 1940s and'50s she worked as a secretary-clerk for the Lake of the Woods County Selective Service Board. She worked as a secretary for the Baudette School District until retiring in 1970. She married Ernest LeVoy on April 16, 1938, in Baudette. He died in 1975.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by sisters, Ruby and Helen; and brothers, Charles, Gust, Edwin and Albert.

Services: 10 a.m. Friday in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Baudette.

Burial: Elm Park Cemetery, Baudette (Helgeson, Baudette).

Walter W. Wendler

BAUDETTE, Minn. -- Walter W. Wendler, 72, Baudette, died Wednesday, Dec. 16, 1998, at home.

Walter William Wendler was born Jan. 10, 1926, the son of Emil and Hattie (Mueller) Wendler, in Springfield, Minn., where he graduated from high school in 1944. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps. He was discharged in 1946 and returned to Springfield. In 1949, he moved to Wheeler Township, Lake of the Woods County, Minn., north of Baudette. He married Beverly Ann Briese on April 10, 1950, in Wheeler Township. In 1965, they moved to Gudrid Township, Lake of the Woods County. He began teaching vocational technology at Baudette High School in the early 1970s. He retired in 1990.

He is survived by his wife; sons, Ronald (Nancy) and Daniel Lee (Pamela), both of Baudette; daughters, Cynthia Ann Dragon, Thornton, Colo., and Sally Faye (Harry) Batdorf, International Falls, Minn.; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and brothers, Emil Jr. (Geraldine), New Ulm, Minn., and Andrew (Lora), Minneapolis.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Wendler.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday in Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Baudette.

Burial: Elm Park Cemetery, Baudette (Helgeson, Baudette).

Ella Faltz

PERLEY, Minn. -- Ella Faltz, 101, Hunter, N.D., formerly of Perley, died Thursday, Dec. 17, 1998, in Good Samaritan Center, Arthur, N.D.

Ella Quittschrieber was born Jan. 24, 1897, the daughter of Charles and Minnie (Feiheit) Quittschrieber, in Perley. She grew up in the Grandin, N.D., and Hunter area. She married Bob Faltz on Oct. 20, 1927. She worked in the U.S. Navy ship yards in Washington during World War II, and in apple orchards during the winter. She moved to Hunter. She operated cafes in Hunter and Arthur. Bob Faltz died Aug. 19, 1960.

She is survived by nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by brothers, Henry, Eddie, Frank, Fred and Johnny; and sisters, Edna, Helen, Gloris, Annie and Alvinia.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday in First Lutheran Church, Hunter.

Burial: Hunter Cemetery (Lindsey-Carlson).

Kevin R. Brateng

ROSEAU, Minn. -- Kevin R. Brateng, 30, Roseau, Falun Township, Roseau County, Minn., died Monday, Dec. 14, 1998, at home.

Kevin Ray Brateng was born Nov. 25, 1968, the son of Ival and Arlene (Naslund) Brateng, in Roseau. He grew up in Salol, Minn., and later moved with his family to Falun Township in the spring of 1975. He attended school in Malung, Minn., and graduated from high school in Roseau in 1987. He worked as a welder at Polaris Industries since May 1988. In January 1994, he bought land in Falun Township, where he built a home.

He is survived by his parents; a sister, Andrea Brateng, Roseau; and his grandmother, Josie Naslund, Roseau.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Louis and Clare Brateng; and Emery Naslund; and an infant brother.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday in Pine Grove Lutheran Church, Roseau.

Visitation: Noon to 7: 30 p.m. today, with a 7: 30 p.m. prayer service in Helgeson Funeral Chapel, Roseau, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Spruce Cemetery, Roseau.

Lena Enquist

WARREN, Minn. -- Lena Enquist, 87, Warren, died Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1999, at North Valley Health Center, Warren.

Lena Smeby was born April 7, 1911, in Buffalo, S.D. She moved to Karlstad, Minn., as a young girl. She married Roy Edwin Enquist on May 21, 1937, in Pontiac, Mich. They lived in Pontiac and Graceville, Minn., before moving to Warren in 1956. They owned and operated the Warren Hotel and Elmcrest Motel. Roy Enquist died Sept. 10, 1985.

She is survived by a son, Dr. Roy John; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Patrick; and several brothers and sisters.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday in First Lutheran Church, Warren.

Visitation: One hour before services in the church.

Burial: Greenwood Cemetery, Warren.
