Harold Fowler

Harold Burton Fowler was born October 17, 1909, in Ryan, Iowa, to William and Jennie (Burkholder) Fowler, where he was raised until moving to Crosby-Ironton, MN, at a young age.

On September 3, 1929, he married Gunella Gilmer in Minneapolis, MN, where they made their home. Harold worked as a private chauffeur and then as a Greyhound bus driver for 38 years, retiring in 1972. They moved to Moorhead, MN, in 1940, where together they operated Fowler Marine Motors. His hobbies were collecting stamps, coins, and selling and repairing bikes at his Moorhead home.

Gunella died in 1993, and Harold became a resident of Rosewood on Broadway, Fargo, ND, in August of 2000. He enjoyed playing trivia at Rosewood and listening to the piano players that would come to entertain the residents. Harold died Wednesday, October 15, 2003, at the age of ninety-three, in Rosewood on Broadway.

He is survived by a daughter, Sharon Kiland, Fargo; a son, Gary (Pam) Fowler, Ogema, MN; grandchildren, Rory (Kristy) Kiland and their daughter Rheagan, Fargo, Blair Kiland, Fargo, Dallas (Lisa) Kiland, and their son Jacob, Denver, CO, Shane Kiland, Moorhead, Tammy (Kevin) Holthaas and their son Carter, Brooklyn Park, MN, Teri (Jeremy) Hansen, Brooklyn Park, Mindy Fowler, Elk River, MN, and Jan Salsman and his son Ryan, Champlin, MN; a sister, Pearl Franson, Iowa; and a brother, Claire “Bud” Fowler, Rushford, MN; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, Harold was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, William; a sister, Ethel Kunzman; and a son-in-law, Mac Kiland.

Vinton Floberg

Vinton Floberg, 73, Hawley, MN, died Wednesday, September 3, 2003, in Moorhead (MN) Healthcare Center.

Vinton Herbrand Ragnor Floberg was born January 12, 1930, in Skree Township, near Hawley, on the H.H. Engen farm, to Oluf and Tilda (Engen) Floberg. Vinton was raised in Hawley where he attended school. Vinton was a lifetime member of Hegland Lutheran Church, where he was baptized April 20, 1930 and confirmed June 27, 1943. The family lived six miles from Hegland Lutheran Church, but they regularly attended Hawley Lutheran Church because of road conditions and questionable transportation. Hawley Lutheran was almost right in their back yard as well.

Vinton didn’t care for school and at fifteen years of age, began full-time work at Peterson Brother’s Grocery in Hawley when there was a labor shortage during WW II. He learned the meat-cutting trade and became the meat-cutter for Peterson Brothers, and later for several different meat markets in the Fargo-Moorhead area. At one time, Vinton started a restaurant in the Winden addition of Hawley, and he later purchased the Garrick Theater. In the early 1980’s, Vinton worked as a custodian at Concordia College, Moorhead.

In September 1948, he and his twin brother, Vincent, joined the Minnesota National Guard in Moorhead. On January 16, 1951, they were activated to serve in the Korean War. Vinton served in Korea and was honorably discharged in May 1952. Vinton never married.

Vinton is survived by his brothers, Maurice (Garnet), Moorhead, and Vincent (Alice), Pelican Rapids, MN, a sister, Vivian Wensel, Moorhead, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Clifton, Orville and LeRoy.

Funeral: Monday, September 8, 2003 - 3 PM Hegland Lutheran Church, Hawley

Pauline Ellingson

Pauline J. Ellingson, 77, died on Sunday, September 21, 2003, at Eventide Lutheran Home, Moorhead, MN, where she had been a resident for the past eight years.

Pauline (Ryan) Ellingson was born on Sept. 13, 1926, in Grand Forks, ND, where she grew up. She attended Hillcrest Lutheran Academy, Fergus Falls, MN, and the Lutheran Bible Institute, Minneapolis, MN. She worked in Flandreau, SD, Stanley, ND, and at Hope Lutheran Church in Fargo, ND, as a parish worker for many years. Pauline married Vernon E. Ellingson on April 25, 1971, in Fargo. The couple lived in Grand Forks until 1973, when they moved to the Fargo-Moorhead area. Vernon passed away in 2001. Pauline was very active in many Christian organizations. She was a volunteer for the KNFW Sharathon for many years and was active with the New Life Center Auxiliary. This was her joy as she served the Lord in many ways.

In addition to her husband, Vernon; Pauline was preceded in death by her parents, Bastian and Sarah Ryan; sisters, Marie Nelson, Florene Skaff and Delores Rasmussen. She is survived by one sister, Sophie (Elwood) Vesta, Moorhead; and several nieces and nephews, Ardell (Jackie) Nelson, Wayne (Arlene) Skaff, Char Skaff, Sharon (David) Tranby, Sam (Laneil) Skaff, Duane (Esther) Vesta, Darrel Vesta, Dale (Leann) Vesta, Deb (Mark) Johnson, Diane Marshall, and David (Jean) Rasmussen. Pauline touched many lives with her Christian witness. She was a precious sister and aunt and will be dearly missed.

John Altobell

John “Johnny” Altobell was born December 20, 1917, in Dilworth, MN, to Antonio and Letizia (DiBrita) Altobelli. His mother died at an early age, and John was raised with his siblings at St. John’s Orphanage, Fargo, ND, until returning at the age of 13 to his family in Dilworth. John graduated from Dilworth High School in 1936, then attended Moorhead State University, Moorhead, MN, where he took courses in physical education and industrial arts. He also participated in football and basketball.

In February of 1941, John’s guard unit was activated and deployed to Germany, where he served as a Tech. Sgt. in the Army. He was in charge of a battalion communications section and supervised the work of maintaining, repairing, and installing wire and radio communications.

Upon his discharge in 1946, he moved to Chicago, IL, where he graduated from decorating school. He then returned to the area and worked as a carpet salesman in ND, SD, and MN. On August 7, 1965, he married Kathleen “Kathy” Steffes in Andover, SD. They moved to Moorhead in 1966, where they raised two daughters. John continued to work as a carpet salesman until his retirement, at which time he became the manager of the Arvid Benson carpet department.

John loved his family and grandchildren and was an active member of St. Joseph Church parish. He was an avid sports fan, enjoying football, basketball, and baseball.

John died Wednesday, October 8, 2003, in SCCI, Fargo, at the age of eight-five.

He is survived by his wife, Kathy, Moorhead; two daughters, Dr. Michelle (Dr. Robert) Bianco, Coralville, IA, and Sheryl (David) Nameniuk, Moorhead; twin granchildren, Amanda “Mandy” and Theodore John “T.J.” Nameniuk, both of Moorhead; two sisters, Laura (Louis) Costello, Dilworth, and Margaret Oliver, Fargo; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Mildred and Mary; and a brother, Joseph.

Visitation for John will be Friday, October 10, 2003, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Moorhead, MN, with a Prayer Service at 6:30.

The Funeral Mass will be Saturday, October 11, 2003 at 1:00 PM at St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Interment at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, Moorhead, MN

Alberta "Bertie" Asplin

Alberta "Bertie" Asplin, 82, of Dilworth, MN, formerly Georgetown, MN, died peacefully on Tuesday, October 21, 2003, at MeritCare, Fargo, ND, after a short illness, surrounded by her husband and family.

Alberta Mae Frantz was born in LuVerne Township, IA, April 20, 1921, to George W. and Ursula (Kubly) Frantz. She received her education in Iowa. On March 30, 1942, she married Harold M. Johnson. They moved to Moorhead, MN, in 1952 and raised their family. She sold Avon for many years until going to work for O'Meara's, a ladies clothing store in Moorhead, in 1969 and worked there until the store closed in the late 1970's.

On July 27, 1974, she was united in marriage to Hubert C. Asplin at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Moorhead. They hobby farmed near Georgetown, MN, until moving to Dilworth, in 2001. Bertie loved gardening, traveling, canning, playing cards, crossword puzzles, and playing games with her family and friends. She will always be remembered for her chicken and homemade noodles, lefse, and pies. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Hubert; her children, Cheryl (Peter) Dwyer, Roger (Ellie) Johnson, Jeanne (Gary) Strom and Patty (Dale) Nelson, all of Moorhead; and her stepsons, Roger (Rita) Asplin, Altamont, IL, Charles Asplin, Fargo, David (Deb) Asplin, and Paul Asplin both of Moorhead; sisters, Lois Wilson, Waterloo, IA and Eunice Fisher, Fort Dodge, IA; and special niece, Betty (Jack) Guy of LuVerne, IA. Hubert and Bertie share 26 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Ronald; sister, Jewell Heinkel; stepson, Kenneth Asplin; and a grandson, Lon Asplin.

Visitation: Friday, October 24, 2003, from 5 PM to 7 PM, Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead, MN.

Funeral: Saturday, October 25, 2003, at 10 AM at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Moorhead, MN.

Burial: Sunset Memorial Gardens, Fargo, ND.

Tim Bennett

Timothy Richard Bennett, the son of Richard and Faith (Efteland) Bennett, was born on September 17, 1962, at Crosby, MN. When he was about six years old, the family moved to Moorhead, MN, where Tim grew up and received his education. As a young man he had lived in a number of states including California and Colorado. He currently lived in Jefferson City, MO, where he worked in construction.

Tim became ill while at work and was rushed to a hospital in Jefferson City where he died on Thursday, August 14, 2003, at the age of 40.

Tim is survived by his mother, Faith Bennett, Moorhead; a sister, F. Michelle Bennett, of Corvallis, Oregon; and one nephew, Cody Wenzel.

Tim was preceded in death by his father, Richard; and his sister, Andrea.

The Memorial service: Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2003, at 1:30 PM Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead.

Esther Benson

Esther Josephine Bremmer was born August 10, 1914, to John and Elizabeth Bremmer, at home in Filmore County, MN, where she attended school and worked on her parents farm. As an older student, she attended school at Augustana Academy, Canton, SD, and in Lake Mills, IA. Esther worked as a sales clerk at Kresge Co, Minneapolis, MN, and Marshall Fields, Oak Brook, IL.

On July 8, 1939, Esther married Norman E. Benson, a seminary student. That senior year, Esther served as the president of the Student Wives Organization.

Along with her husband, Rev. Norman, they served the Lord together for forty-nine years. They served parishes in Libby, Dillon, and Scobey, MT, Galesville, WI, Bensenville, IL, McIntosh, MN, and in retirement, Norm was chaplain at Halstad (MN) Lutheran Home and visitation pastor at Trinity Lutheran Church, Moorhead. He died in 1991.

After his death, Esther continued to make her home in Moorhead. Her hobbies were singing, sewing, cooking and gardening. Esther died Thursday, Sept. 25, 2003, at Eventide Lutheran Home in Moorhead, at the age of 89.

Esther is survived by two sons, David (Peggy), Edina, MN, and James (Mary), Glenwood Springs, CO; a sister, Almyra Olson, Preston, MN; six grandsons, Jonathan (Jessica), Matthew (Lia), Peter (Becca), Micah (Amy Jo), Jacob, and Christopher; a granddaughter, Sarah; a stepgranddaughter, Tina (Chase) Rasmusson; a stepgrandson, Charles Nelson; three great-granddaughters, Annika, Kai, and Ava; two stepgreat-grandchildren, Macie and Charlie; three sisters-in-law, Ruth Knutson, Peterson, MN, Lorraine Benson, LaCrosse, WI, and Clara Bremmer, Rushford, MN; a brother-in-law, Emer Knutson, Peterson; and several cousins, nieces and nephews

In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to the Norman and Esther Benson Scholarship Funds at Concordia College or Oak Grove Lutheran School.

Visitation: Sunday, 3PM to 6 PM Korsmo Funeral Service, Moorhead, and one hour prior to the funeral at the church.

Funeral Service: Monday, Sept. 29, 2003, at 11 AM Trinity Lutheran Church, Moorhead

Interment: Riverside Cemetery, Moorhead.
