Zita Manuel, 85

Zita M. Manuel, 85, of Maple Lake died on Monday, April 20, 2015 at the St. Cloud Hospital.

Mass of Christian Burial was scheduled on Monday, April 27 at St. Timothy Catholic Church, Maple Lake with Fr. Martin Shallbetter and Deacon Ron Freeman officiating. Burial followed at St. Timothy’s Catholic Cemetery. Visitation, with prayer service, was scheduled on Sunday, April 26 at Dingmann Funeral Care Chapel, Maple Lake, as well as on Monday at the funeral chapel.

Zita Margaret Manuel was born on Jan. 18, 1930 to John and Frances (Zwilling) Steichen in Maine Prairie Township, Stearns County, Minn.

On Nov. 16, 1950, Zita was united in holy matrimony to Andrew Manuel at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Kimball. They resided in Cold Spring and Monticello before moving to Maple Lake in 1952. Along with her husband, Andrew, Zita owned and operated Andy’s Red Owl in Maple Lake.

Andrew preceded her in death on March 25, 1987. Zita was a member of St. Timothy’s Catholic Church, the Council of Catholic Women and the Catholic Order of Foresters. She also belonged to the Maple Lake American Legion Auxiliary, Maple Lake VFW Auxillary, Maple Lake Senior Citizens, and the Wright County Volunteer Drivers. Zita was a former board member and Chairperson of the Council on Aging for the five-county area, and she served on the Maple Lake City Council. Zita enjoyed sewing, playing cards, quilting, running Manuels Costume Shop, and spending time with her family.

Zita is survived by: her children, Roger (Katie), Carol Chandler and Lawrence (Louie), all of Maple Lake, Alice Manuel (Karen Bylander) of Albertville, and Paul (Angie) of Annandale; 10 grandchildren, Jason, Ryan, Sara, Mandy, Danny, Orin, Kari, Andy, Laura, and Nathan; 3 great-grandchildren, Andrew “AJ”, Oliver and George; siblings, Theresa (Warren) Theisen of St. Cloud and Rose Weineke of Cold Spring; and many nieces, nephews and other family members and friends. She was preceded in death by: her husband, Andrew; son, Bruce; brothers, Robert, Roman, Joseph, and Bernard Steichen; and sisters, Agnes Hentges and Helen Anderson Holt.

Jason, Ryan, Orin, Andy, Nathan Manuel and Danny Chandler were asked to serve as pallbearers, with Mandy Chandler, Sara Hayes, Kari Buttenhoff, and Laura Manuel as honorary pallbearers. Sarah Goelz and Krista Elsenpeter Tarbox were asked to provide music for the service.

Arrangements were entrusted to Dingmann Funeral Care Burial & Cremation Services of Maple Lake.

Louis Barthel, 87

Louis Paul Barthel, 87, of Albertville passed away peacefully on Monday, May 25, 2015 at the St. Cloud Hospital.

Louis was born Jan. 21, 1928 in St. Michael, Minn. to Albert and Lena (Kasper) Barthel. He attended St. Albert’s Catholic School until the ninth grade, when he started dairy farming with his two brothers on the family farm.

On May 6, 1947, Louis met the love of his life, Sylvia, while at a dance hall in Rogers, Minn. Louis Paul Barthel and Sylvia Marie Scherber were united in marriage on Oct. 8, 1949 at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church in Anoka, Minn.; the two were blessed with ten children.

Louis purchased the farm in the 1960s and farmed until 2001, at which time they sold the farm and purchased their lake home in Richmond, Minn. Living on a lake was always Louis’ dream.

He was a lifelong member of St. Albert’s Catholic Church in Albertville, Minn. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, horseshoe, pool, and watching the Twins on TV.

Louis is survived by: his wife of 65 years, Sylvia Barthel; children, Mary Lou (Ron) Broll, Kathy (Daryl) Hennen, Sharon Helmbrecht (Dan Rassat), Diana (Dave) Quinn, David Barthel, (Jeff) Brant, Donna Barthel, Dennis Barthel, Lori (Matt) Martin, and Nancy (Ray) McKenzie; 25 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; sisters, Verena Zachman, Catherine Elsenpeter and Betty (Harvey) Zahler; siblings-in-law, Margaret Barthel, Richard Scherber and Mary Scherber; and many nieces, nephews, family, and friends.

He was preceded in death by: his parents, Albert and Lena Barthel; daughter, Joanne Brant; son-in-law, Gary Helmbrecht; siblings, Clarence Barthel, Al (Helen) Barthel, Ernie (Joyce) Barthel, Benno Barthel, Donald (Betty) Barthel, Norman (Dorothy) Barthel, Alicetine (George) Schroepfer, Florence (Pete) Isenberg, and Cecelia (Delbert) Fish; and siblings-in-law, Irene Scherber, Eugene Scherber, Francis Scherber, and Betty (Clarence) Eicher.

Mass of Christian Burial was scheduled on Thursday, May 28, with visitation an hour prior, at St. Albert’s Catholic Church, with Father Xavier Thelakkatt as celebrant. Visitation was also scheduled on Wednesday, May 27 at the church. Interment was planned at St. Albert’s Cemetery.

The Peterson Chapel St. Michael-Albertville Funeral Home served the family.

Steven Ernst, 56

Steven Chris Ernst, 56, of Danbury, Wis. passed away at home on Wednesday, May 27, 2015 under hospice care.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ben and Laura Ernst, and an older brother, Terry Ernst.

Steve was a Delano High School Class of 1977 graduate.

He is survived by: his wife of 12 years, Theresa Ernst of Danbury; siblings, Chris (Scott) Niesen of Waverly, Minn. and Linda (Bruce) Meder of Underwood, Minn.; niece and nephews, Nic (fiancé Jamie Porter) Niesen, Andrea Niesen, Benjamin Meder, and Jake Meder; and grand-niece and nephews, Christopher Niesen, Samuel Niesen, Morgan Niesen, and Logan Porter.

Swedberg-Taylor Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Webster, Wis. is entrusted with final care.

Denzel Hickman, 81

Denzel Niles Hickman, 81, of Delano passed away on May 25, 2015.

Funeral services were scheduled on Monday, June 1 at the Cross Lutheran Church in Rockford, with Pastor Barlow officiating, and with visitation on Sunday at the Iten Funeral Home in Delano (continuing on Monday at the church prior to services). Interment was planned at the Elmwood Cemetery in Rockford.

Denzel Niles Hickman was born on Jan. 12, 1934 in Paynesville, son of Millard Hickman and Alice (Clark) Hickman.

He entered the Air Force in October 1951, receiving an honorable discharge in November 1955. He was baptized as an adult on April 11, 1954 at St Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Harlingen, Texas. He was a member of Cross Lutheran Church in Rockford for 53 years.

On Aug. 5, 1953, Denzel was united in marriage to Sylvia Wendroth at St Paul’s Lutheran Church in Eden Valley. This marriage was blessed with nine children. They shared 54 years of marriage.

Denzel was most remembered for being a mechanic. He had a knack for looking at something and knowing what he could substitute or create to make it work. He could listen to an engine and tell you the problem with it; many people came to him for advice on mechanical issues. For many years, Denzel repaired cars in the evenings and weekends as a sideline - which became a gathering time for friends and neighbors. This was the start of Hickman’s Service. Denzel retired from the maintenance department at Lakewood Cemetery in 1999 after 24.5 years of employment.

He always had a story to tell, usually with a twinkle in his eye. He showed his love of family by gentle teasing and special “nicknames” for most everyone. He could be found many evenings playing cards with his family and friends.

Denzel is survived by: daughter-in-law, Teresa (Klayton) Schumm of Buffalo, Minn.; daughter, Marie (Dan) Williamson of Dassel, Minn.; daughter, Carol (Les) Reinhart of Buffalo; daughter, Kim Anderson (Robert Lubitz) of New York Mills, Minn.; sons, Turk (Vicki) Hickman of Buffalo and Dennis (Chris) Hickman of Watertown, Minn.; daughter, Emma (Dan) Hanson of Delano, Minn.; sons, Joe (April) Hickman of Montrose, Minn. and John (Amanda) Hickman of Corona, S.D.; 30 grandchildren, Tad Hickman, Kurt Schumm, Kyle Schumm, Kraig Schumm, Robert Wendler, James (Lisa) Wendler, Melinda Wendler, Mark (Becky) Wendler, Christina (Bryan) Klaphake, Lee (Jessica) Reinhart, Lillian Reinhart, Jed Reinhart, Jolynn (Chris) Green, Annie (Dustin) Charette, Kelsi Anderson, Mychelle Dexter (and fiance Ryan Fobbe), Niles (Jacie) Hickman, Neila (Travis) Spande, Jaylyn Hickman, Jerome Hickman, Tyler Hanson, Erin Hanson, Jacki Hanson, Josh Hickman, Cheyenne Hickman, Eli Hickman, Evan Hickman, Wyatt Hickman, Tucker Hickman, and Seth Hickman; and 30 great-grandchildren, Andrew Wendler, Alicia Wendler, Matthew Wendler, Jayden Hinman, Mason Hinman, Mariah Hinman, Madilyn Hinman, Karissa Smalls, Kasari Rowe, Devon Wendler, Kasean Nelson, Cory Wendler, Daniel Wendler, Dominick Wendler, Arianna Wendler, Makayla Wendler, Carson Wendler, Hannah Wendler, Owen Klapahke, Evan Klapahke, Hunter Reinhart, Evelyn Reinhart, Aurora Hairshine, Ayden Muscha, Paige Green, Drake Green, Breyson Charette, baby Charette expected in August, Maci Hickman, and Alex Hickman.

He is further survived by: his brothers, Frank, Mark and Lee Hickman; and sisters, Alice Tolzman, Violet Hamilton, Elaine Robbins, Mavis Pung, Laurie Weber, Ava Hickman, and Loretta Foss.

He was preceded in death by: his wife, Sylvia; son, Clark Hickman; son-in-law, Martin Anderson; granddaughter, Whitney Hickman; parents, Millard and Alice Hickman; brothers, Roscoe, George, Gene, Mike, and Steve; sister, Mayme Sandry; infant brother, Dwayne; and infant sister, Marion.

Arrangements were by the Iten Funeral Home in Delano.

Raymond Holthaus, 83

Raymond V. Holthaus, 83, of St. Michael passed away on Saturday, May 23, 2015 at his residence.

He was born on April 22, 1932 in Rockville Township, Stearns County the son of James H. and Rose C. (Loesch) Holthaus.

On June 8, 1955, Raymond V. Holthaus and Bernelda Hackenmueller were joined in holy marriage at the Church of St. Michael. God blessed their marriage with eight children.

Raymond engaged in dairy farming for many years. He later worked at Gruman Steel and Garlock. He enjoyed his family, was a loving caregiver and was a very patient man. He also enjoyed playing cards, gardening, canning, and being an inventor. He was a faithful member of St. Michael Catholic Church in St. Michael and belonged to the Knights of Columbus and Catholic Order of Foresters.

Survived by: his loving children, Linda (Doug) Johnson of St. Michael, Kathy (Tom) Gleason of Rogers, Tom (Patty) Holthaus of St. Michael, Bonnie (Steve) Kilian of St. Michael, and Judy (Jim) Paumen of Waverly; grandchildren, Amy (Matt) Larson, Lorie Gleason, Dan (Bree) Gleason, Bonnie Gleason, Paul, Tom, Katie, Susie, Joe, and Julie Kilian, Andy, Jenny and Tony Paumen, Jesse and Jake Johnson, and Wendy Holthaus; two great-grandchildren, Nora and Stephen Gleason; brothers and sisters, Charles (Betty) Holthaus of Monticello, Richard (Annella) Holthaus, Bernice Bursch and Leona Henson, all of Buffalo; sisters-in-law and a brothers-in-law, Irmina Holthaus, Aggie Hackenmueller, Carol Hackenmueller, Fr. Jerome Hackenmueller, and Jim (Sharon) Hackenmueller; and nieces, nephews, many other relatives, and friends.

Preceded in death by: his wife, Bernelda; a daughter, Nancy Jean; a son, Timothy Allen; a daughter, Karen Ann; parents, James and Rose Holthaus; a sister, Lucille Holthaus; a brother, Fred Holthaus; and by a sister, Marie Wurm.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Raymond Holthaus was scheduled on Saturday, May 30 at the Church of St. Michael with Father Jerome Hackenmueller as the Celebrant. A visitation was planned on Friday, May 29 at the church, along with further visitation Saturday morning an hour prior to Mass at the church. Interment followed at the St. Michael Cemetery.

The Peterson Chapel St. Michael-Albertville Funeral served the family.

Shawn Kienholz, 27

Shawn Edward Kienholz of Hastings was tragically taken from us on May 28, 2015 at the age of 27.

Shawn was a new husband, married May 1, 2015, a loving father of Kolten, 5, and a loyal son and brother. His energy and passion for life, along with his boisterous laughing spirit, will be so dearly missed. Words don't adequately describe how we all felt about him; we can only hope we can convey how much he meant to us all and how much love we had for him.

Shawn leaves behind his wife, Lacy Kienholz, and his best friend - best man - and only son, Kolten Kienholz. He is also survived by: his father, Edward Kienholz (Daneille Dalbec); mother, Phyllis Kienholz; sister, Christy (Kienholz) Rekstad; his brother, Kyle Kienholz; and grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and many dear friends. We'll forever keep you in our hearts, Shawn; you were an amazing person who meant so much to us all. May God give you his peace, and may you look down upon us all with your huge loving smile!

Funeral services were scheduled on Wednesday, June 3 at Light of Christ Church in Delano, Minn.

The family has set up a fund in honor of Shawn to help his wife and son with current and future expenses. Patricia Murphy, 84

Patricia Ann Murphy, 84, of Buffalo peacefully joined her Lord on May 29, 2015.

Pat was raised in St. Paul and married Edward Murphy in June 1967. She was blessed with two sons, Tim and Jeff. Pat and Ed raised their boys on Lake Pulaski in Buffalo. Pat loved to read by the lake and watch their boys swim. She loved spending as much time as possible with them, and later with their families. Pat had a heart as sweet as sugar; she was always so kind, loving, caring, faith filled, positive, generous, and selfless. She had many hobbies, which included knitting, crocheting and volunteering. She was always looking for yarn for her many projects! She made Christmas stockings, blankets, shawls, mittens, and scarves for her grandchildren, plus other children in need. Her grandkids always looked forward to seeing Grandma Pat because “she had the best snacks and always played games with us!” We can all hear Pat laughing in the heavens and know she is flying free with our Lord and all other family members and friends who passed before her.

She was preceded in death by husband, Edward, and parents, John and Bertha Then. Pat is survived by: sons, Tim (Angie) Murphy and Jeff (Jill) Murphy; grandchildren, Tara, Maia, Mitchell, Alison, Megan, Sarah, and Grace; and sister, Joan McCann.

Mass of Christian Burial is taking place Friday, June 5 at 11 a.m., with visitation one hour prior to the service, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Buffalo. Interment will be at St. Francis Catholic Cemetery in Buffalo.

Serving the family is the Peterson Chapel, Buffalo.

Gregory Olson, 52

Gregory A. Olson, 52, of Cokato, died Sunday, May 31, 2015 at Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids.

Memorial services will be held 1:00 p.m. Sunday, June 7, 2015 at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Maple Lake with Rev. Culynn Curtis officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Sunday at the church.

Gregory Allen Olson was born May 19, 1963 in Coon Rapids to Paul and Darlene (Peterson) Olson. Greg grew up in Andover and graduated from St. Francis High School with the Class of 1981. Greg lived in Zimmerman prior to moving to Cokato, where he has resided since 2005.

He was united in marriage to Melissa Ann Runquist on Sept. 15, 2007 at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Maple Lake. Greg worked as a metal finisher for Advance Process Technology in Cokato. In his free time, Greg enjoyed watching NASCAR, fishing, four-wheeling, and camping. He truly treasured the time he was able to spend with his family.

Greg is survived by: his wife, Melissa of Cokato; daughter, Kassidy Olson of Big Lake; step-children, Alexander Watson of Willmar and Samantha Murphy of Cokato; parents, Darlene and Paul Olson of Deerwood; siblings, Jeff (Holly) Olson of Brainerd, Sherri Peterson of Isanti and Troy Olson of Isanti; nieces and nephews, Mike Peterson, Brittni Peterson, Ashley Peterson, Makayla Meier, and Sven Meier; mother-in-law, Billie (Al) Movern of Buffalo; father-in-law, LeRoy Habiger of Sauk Rapids; and sister-in-law, Sarah Meier of Maple Lake.

Arrangements are entrusted to Dingmann Funeral Care Burial & Cremation Services of Maple Lake.
