Ralph Leis
Ralph John Christoph Leis, 86, Elbow Lake, died Saturday, Oct. 16, 2004, at his home.
He was born Aug. 19, 1918, to Jacob and Nellie Leis on the family farm in Delaware Township. He attended grades one through eight in Elbow Lake, then worked full-time for his father at the Leis Garage, later known as Leis Motors. Except for three years in the Navy during World War II, he worked his entire life at the garage. He retired in 1994.
On Sept. 8, 1940, he married
Edna Fischer in Webster, S.D., and on Feb. 28, 1947, they announced the arrival of their only child, Steven. They shared an extraordinary zest for life and each other. Together they delighted in the company of close friends. Edna's passing Jan. 9, 1989, left a deep hole in Ralph's heart, but somehow he managed to soldier on with the soft-spoken principle: "Life is for the living."
Throughout adulthood, he served his community and fellow man. When the Community Memorial Hospital (now ELEAH) opened its doors in 1961, he proudly served the board as its first president. Throughout the decade, he also served several terms on the local school board. A few years after the merging of First Lutheran Church and St. John's Lutheran Church, he played a decisive role in the formation of the United Lutheran Church and parsonage. Thanks to his dogged determination under exceptionally trying circumstances, he championed a project that eventually became Tipsinah Mounds Golf Course and Campground. He was also a long-time member of the American Legion.
Always a tough competitor, he enjoyed many years of bowling on a strong Leis Motors team. Yet it's safe to say that golf was his true passion. Long after the last leaf had blown from the trees, he was found pulling his rickety cart over the hills and dales of his favorite golf course. When the course would finally lock its gates for the season, there was always his beloved Papago Golf Course in Mesa, Ariz. He and Edna spent many Februarys vacationing with friends in the area.
The one thing that made him special was his unwavering sense of fair play. Whether it be a customer at the garage or a waitress in a restaurant, he treated everybody justly. He always gave 100 percent of himself. The number of people he helped would probably fill a New York City phone book twice. There was never a charity he wouldn't support.
During the last 25 years of his life, he triumphed over a number of medical setbacks, but Alzheimer's left its calling card in 1994. In spite of it all, he shared heartfelt smiles, vigorous handshakes and tears of joy with every person he met. In the end, he was at peace with himself and the Lord. Fittingly, when he left this earth, he did so with an amazing display of dignity and class.
He is survived by his son, Steven, and daughter-in-law, Leticia of Elbow Lake; brothers, Paul of Elbow Lake and Lawrence of Elbow Lake; and many nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his father, Jacob, in 1960; mother, Nellie, in 1987; and wife, Edna, in 1989.
