Sophia Klepinski

Sophia Klepinski, 97, formerly of 29th Avenue West and West Third Street died Friday, March 30, 2001, in Viewcrest Health Center.

Born Aug. 26, 1903, in Poland to Joseph and Loretta Klepcsynski, her family moved to Duluth in 1907. Sophia worked for Nelson Knitting Mills from 1929 until they closed, and then worked for North Shore Manufacturing Co. until she retired in 1976.

She was a member of St. Josephat National Catholic Church, Harrison Senior Center, and AARP since 1976. She was a former member of Polish National Alliance Lodge 880, and the Amalgamated Clothing & Textile Workers Union.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Kasmir Klepinski; and a sister, Stella Bussa.

She is survived by a sister, Jennie Klepinski of Duluth; a niece, Wanda Bussa of Minnetonka, Minn.; and a nephew, Robert (Terry) Klepinski of St. Louis Park, Minn.; and grandnieces, Elizabeth, Marta and Katie Klepinski.

Visitation: 1 until 2:30 p.m. Monday in Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home, followed by a private family committal service in Polish Catholic cemetery.

Theodore "Ted" Super

Theodore "Ted" Super, 93, of Piedmont Avenue died Saturday, March 31, 2001, in Viewcrest Nursing Home.

He was born in Munger to Joseph and Tillie Super and had lived in the Munger and Duluth areas all of his life. He was employed by Hallett Dock Co., Dock 6, and retired in 1973. He had also worked on other docks and worked his own farm in Munger.

Ted was a 20-year member in of the Eagles and was a member of Solway Senior Citizens.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth; a daughter, Sharon (Richard W. Johnson) Super, of Duluth; his sisters, Elsie Gulbranson, of Proctor and Margaret (Lyle) Colberg, of Esko; a step-grandson, Matthew Johnson; and special friend and former caregiver, Janice Moore.

Visitation: 1 until the 2 p.m. service Thursday in Christ Lutheran Church, 2415 Ensign St. Burial in Bethany cemetery. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.

Mary B. Christofferson

Mary B. Christofferson, 91, of Duluth died Sunday, April 1, 2001, in her niece's home following a brief illness.

She was born Dec. 28, 1909, in Duluth to Simon and Anna (Czulicki) Droszewski. Mary grew up in Duluth and attended the Polish Catholic School. On June 30, 1934, she was united in marriage to Alwin A. Anderson. Following their marriage the couple made their home in Duluth, Minneapolis, Albert Lea and Alexandria, before returning to Duluth in the early 1950s. She was employed in the housekeeping department at Lake Aire Motel and was head housekeeper before her retirement. She married Arthur B. Christofferson on Sept. 21, 1968.

Mary was a member of St. Mary's Star of the Sea Catholic Church and a former member of St. Benedict's Catholic Church. She loved to knit, crochet, read and was an excellent cook.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands Al in 1965 and Arthur in 1986; and brothers Frank, Stephen and Joseph Droszewski.

She is survived by sisters Theresa Kubiske and Helen (Walter) Lisiecki, both of Duluth; nieces Elizabeth (George) Armstrong of St. Louis, Mo., Margaret (Robert) Pecha of Grand Rapids, Marilyn (Kenneth) Goodell of Duluth, Mary Ann (Thomas) Toner of Savage, Minn., and JoAnn Johnson and Ginny Johnson, both of Duluth; and a nephew, Walter (JoAnn) Lisiecki Jr., of Duluth.

Mary will be remembered with love by her family and friends.

Visitation: 5 p.m. with 7 p.m. rosary Wednesday in Dougherty Funeral Home. Service 10 a.m. Thursday in St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church. Burial in Calvary cemetery.

Donald L. "Rocky" Rockstad

Donald L. "Rocky" Rockstad, 62, of Atlantic Avenue went to be with our Lord Saturday, March 31, 2001, in Lakeshore Lutheran Home, after a brief but courageous battle with liver cancer.

He was born in Superior and graduated from Superior Central in 1957. Rocky served in the Coast Guard and then worked for Montgomery Ward in Duluth for many years. He retired as manager of the Duluth Athletic Club until it closed in the late 1970s.

Rocky was a Gold Life Master at bridge. He accumulated more than 3, 700 master points in a 40-year period. He won numerous state and regional titles during his career and was ranked in the top five players in Minnesota, playing his first national tournament in 1960 in Minneapolis. Rocky finished second overall in a field of 400 players and topped off his career on his 62nd birthday with a first place win in a team event at the Nationals in Kansas City.

Rocky will be sadly missed by his bridge friends in the United States and Canada.

He is survived by a sister, Marcia (Roy) Oullette, of Clauson, Mich.; a sister-in-law, Joan Rockstad, of Stanwood, Mich.; and several nieces and nephews.

Burial to be in Michigan. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, 600 E. Second St.

Edna J. Lee

Edna J. Lee, 87, formerly of West Arrowhead Road died Sunday, April 1, 2001, in Viewcrest Health Center.

She was born May 8, 1913, to August and Anna (Johnson) Bondeson, in Silverdale, Minn. Edna was a licensed practical nurse at Miller-Dwan Medical Center for 16 years. She was a lifelong member of Peace United Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Chester Kirby; her second husband, Arthur Lee; a sister, Hazel Hendrickson; and brothers Lewis, Bill, Abe and David Bondeson.

Edna is survived by her sons David (Jean) Kirby of Duluth and Dennis (Judy) Kirby of Plymouth, Minn.; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mabel Lloyd of Illinois; and a brother, Paul Bondeson, of Duluth.

Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Wednesday in Peace United Church of Christ. Entombment in Sunrise Memorial Park, Hermantown. Arrangements by Johnson Mortuary.

Capt. Burleigh Beard Peterson Jr.

Capt. Burleigh Beard Peterson Jr., 77, of Minnetonka, Minn., died Saturday, March 31, 2001.

Burleigh was born and raised in Duluth. He retired after 30 years active duty in the Navy. He was an active supporting member of Hopkins United Methodist Church, Experimental Aircraft Association, Reserve Officers Association, VFW and American Legion.

He is survived by his loving wife, Lucille; daughters Joanne (Joe) Kellogg and Judy (Bern) Sanson; grandchildren Sarah and Ian Kellogg and Tom, Amanda, Melody and Scott Sanson; a sister, Dorothy (Rudy) Schneider; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. memorial service Wednesday in Hopkins United Methodist Church, 717 Hwy. 7, Hopkins, Minn. Private interment in Fort Snelling National cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Hopkins United Methodist Church, Experimental Aircraft Association or the donor's choice. Arrangements by Washburn-McReavy Strobeck Johnson Chapel, 1400 Mainstreet, Hopkins, MN 55343, (952) 938-9020.

Earl Levin Nelson

Earl Levin Nelson, 73, formerly of Robin Avenue died Sunday, April 1, 2001, in his sister's home in Duluth.

He was born in Eveleth and lived in Duluth for 50 years. For the past few years he was living in Woodbury, Minn. He attended Denfeld High School and Duluth Business College. He retired in 1982 as director of marketing at Jeno's Inc., where he worked for 18 years of dedicated service.

Earl loved life and the company of people. When he was in a fishing boat, anything in the water with fins and a tail was bound to end up in his frying pan for dinner. Earl joined the Navy near the end of World War II and served in the Pacific Rim.

He was preceded in death by his father, Nick.

He is survived by his mother, Myrtle, of Duluth; sons Rich of Caledonia, Minn., and Jim (Jodie) of St. Paul; a daughter, Karen (Bruce) Wick of Roseville, Minn.; sisters Charlotte Erdahl of Duluth, Carolyn (Bob) Maxwell of St. Peter, Minn. and Millie (Jack) Caldwell of Austin, Texas; and nine grandchildren.

Visitation: 2 until the 3 p.m. service Wednesday in Bell Brothers Chapel. Burial in Sunrise Memorial Park. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.

Ruth M. Larsen

Ruth M. Larsen, 95, died Sunday, April 1, 2001, in Eventide Lutheran Home in Moorhead, Minn.

Ruth was born June 14, 1905, in Portland, N.D., to Rev. Abel and Andrea (Kittilsen) Lien. She grew up and attended school in Portland, graduating from high school there in 1923. She graduated from Concordia College in Moorhead in 1927. Ruth taught school in North Dakota.

On July 12, 1931, Ruth was united in marriage to Rev. Lars M. Larsen. Following their marriage they served several parishes including Van Hook and Sanish, N.D., and Stephen, Argyle and Moorhead, Minn. They served at Grace Lutheran Church in Duluth from 1960 to 1969. Following Duluth they served in rural Lake Park, Minn., and Pelican Rapids, Minn. In the early 1970s they retired and returned to Moorhead. Rev. Larsen died in 1998.

Ruth is survived by her daughter, Naomi (J. Donald) Rice of Moorhead; sons Abel (Vivian) Larsen of Ramsey, Minn., and David (Zondra) Larsen of Litchfield, Minn.; grandchildren Deborah (Mark) Kramer, Stephen (Penelope) Rice, Rebecca (Alden) Tetlie, Cheryl (Mark) Johnson, Timothy (Anne) Larsen, Rachael (Scott) Stibal, Michael (Susie) Larsen and Matthew (Jill) Larsen; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Visitation: 4 until the 7 p.m. service today in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead. Service 10 a.m. Wednesday in Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Moorhead. Burial in Riverside cemetery, Moorhead.

Warren A. Downs

Warren A. Downs, 85, of East Third Street passed away Saturday, March 31, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center.

He was born Dec. 12, 1915, in Ciscero, Ill., to James and Adeline (Behnke) Downs. Warren was employed as a teacher in McGregor High School, retiring in 1977. He served in the Air Force during World War II. Warren married Glenna Stephens Feb. 16, 1946, in Elmhurst, Ill.

He was a charter member of the Methodist Church in Morton, Ill., a member of the Masonic Lodge of Topeka, Kan., and a former member of the VFW in Morton.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Glenna, of Duluth; a sister, Ruth Turnquist, of Winfield, Ill.; three nieces; and 2 nephews.

No services are planned at Warren's request. Johnson Mortuary is assisting the family.

Sarah A. Johnson

Sarah A. Johnson, 84, formerly of 59th Avenue West died Sunday, April 8, 2001, in Lake Haven Manor.

She was born in Duluth on Jan. 4, 1917, to Rade and Mildred (Kosanovich) Zernich. She graduated from Morgan Park High School and lived in Duluth most of her life.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gislie Johnson; brothers Robert and Ted Zernich; a sister, Mary Malec; and a son-in-law, Owen Olson.

She is survived by daughters Susan Forsberg of St. Louis and Faye Olson of Atlanta; a sister, Diane Tomich of Duluth; nieces Melissa Zigich of Duluth and Carol Babnik of Waukegan, Ill.; grandchildren Gregory Forsberg of St. Louis; Dr. Michael Forsberg of Atlanta, Eric and Amy Olson, both of Atlanta; and a great-granddaughter, Kayla Forsberg.

Visitation: noon until the 1 p.m. service Wednesday in Foley Chapel. Burial in Oneota cemetery. Arrangements by Hegstrom Family Funeral Homes, Foley Chapel, 5405 Ramsey St.

Louis P. Johnson

Louis P. Johnson, 61, of Duluth died Sunday, April 8, 2001, in St. Luke's Medical Center.

He was born June 16, 1939, in Staples, Minn., to Louis and Anne (Mudek) Johnson. He worked as a stagehand for IATSI in the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center, was an assistant manager for the DECC Arena and Auditorium for 10 years, and worked at Lighthouse for the Blind as a shift supervisor. He worked with Charlie Schaub for many years.

Louis was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church and IATSI Union Local 32. He enjoyed woodworking, carpentry and cooking.

He was preceded in death by his father, Louis; and sisters, Diane, Dorothy and Louise.

He is survived by his significant other, Janice Degrio of Duluth; his mother, Anne (Mudek) Klar of Crosby; sons Michael (Leticia) Johnson of Houston and Mark (Lisa) Johnson of Duluth; a brother, Ray (Mary) Johnson of Crosby; sisters Betty Platisha of Crosby, Jackie (Haskell) Chambers of Greenwood, Mo., Paulette (Don) Winberg of Duluth; his first wife, Judith Johnson; grandchildren Michael, Brandon, Sara, Jared, Rachel, Mariah and Reid; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Louis loved his dog, Penny, and his close friend, Mike Garromone. They will miss him dearly.

Visitation: 5-7 p.m. today and continuing noon until the 1 p.m. service Wednesday in Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home. Pastor Sharon Osborn officiating.
