Patricia Simon Rose

Patricia Simon Rose, 66, of Boonville, Ind., died Wednesday, April 4, 2001, in her home with family by her side.

She was born Oct. 10, 1934, in Duluth.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her husband, Donald "Bud" Rose; a son, Michael of Indianapolis; daughters, Lee Ann Kipta, Teri Rose, Mary Nicholson; and eight grandchildren, all of Boonville.

Services were held in Boonville on April 7.

Grace "Toots" Almstrom

Grace "Toots" Almstrom, 89, formerly of 20th Avenue West and West Second Street died peacefully Saturday, April 7, 2001, in St. Luke's Hospital.

She was born Jan. 29, 1912, in Duluth to Alex and Sophia Almstrom. Grace was a lifelong member of First Covenant Church. She lived for several years at Midtowne Manor II Assisted Living program.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters and their husbands, Lillian and Emil Peterson, Mildred and Michael Ross, and Helen and Frank Stovall.

Grace is survived by a nephew, Mark Peterson of Minneapolis.

Toots will be greatly missed!

Visitation: Noon until the 1 p.m. service Tuesday in First Covenant Church, 2102 W. Second St., Pastor Mick Murphy officiating. Burial in Park Hill cemetery.

Robert L. Chopp

Robert L. Chopp, 63, of Duluth died Thursday, April 5, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth.

He was born Nov. 11, 1937, in Virginia to Victor and Rafela (Fragnito) Chopp and had been a Virginia resident until moving to Duluth in 1996. Bob taught school in Virginia and had been a member of the Northern Club and the Italian American Club, both of Virginia. Bob was an avid fisherman.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a baby brother.

Survivors include his wife, Clare of Duluth; sons Jeffrey (Mary Ellen) Chopp and Jason Chopp, both of Brooklyn Park, Minn.; daughters Cari Lynn (Martin) Kirkman of Ham Lake and Heather and Rebecca, both at home; seven grandchildren; a brother, Michael (Sue) Chopp of St. Cloud, Minn.; a sister, Victoria "Cookie" (James) Carlson of Virginia; an aunt and two uncles.

Visitation: 9 until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian burial Monday in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Virginia, the Rev. Father John O'Donnell as celebrant. A memorial Mass will be held at 5 p.m. Tuesday in Holy Family Catholic Church in the Lincoln Park area, Duluth, the Rev. Father Andrew Knop as celebrant. Arrangements by the Landmark Funeral Home of Virginia.

Evelyn G. "Tutz" Peterson

Evelyn G. "Tutz" Peterson, 90, of Duluth, died peacefully Sunday, March 18, 2001, in the home of her daughter in Prior Lake, Minn.

She was a lifelong resident and pioneer of the Fond du Lac neighborhood of Duluth.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Helmer "Al" Peterson.

She is survived by her son Murray (Marilyn) Peterson; her daughter Claudia (Dick) Booth; four grandsons, Robin (Cheryl) Peterson, Shelby (Gwen) Peterson, Cory and Scott Booth; four great-grandchildren, Alex, Brandon, Mitchell and Misty; and many nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

Memorial service and celebration of her life: noon Friday at her home in Fond du Lac. Family and friends are invited anytime after 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the Prior Lake Library children's section, Attn: Hilary Toren, 16210 Eagle Creek Ave., Prior Lake, MN 55372.

Mary Louise Meehan

Mary Louise Meehan, 62, of Taft Road died Tuesday, April 3, 2001, in Portsmouth Regional Hospital in Portsmouth, N.H., after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Duluth on March 9, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Francis Fish and Margaret (Paukner) Poferl. She was a 1957 graduate of Stanbrook Hall in Duluth. She was a bank bookkeeper for several years before leaving to raise her children.

She attended St. James Church. She enjoyed gardening, reading and attending functions of the Port City Radio Club. She was the wife of David W. Meehan, who died in 1994.

Surviving family members include her children David Meehan, Colleen Meehan and Katherine Meehan, all of Portsmouth; brothers Michael (Karin) Fish of St. Paul and Patrick (Carol) Fish of Yuma, Ariz.; sisters Kathleen Morrow of St. Paul Park, Minn., and Rosemary Anderson and Margaretanne Fish, both of Cottage Grove, Minn.; a sister-in-law, Eileen Fish of Duluth; aunts; nieces; nephews; and cousins.

Visitation: 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. today in Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. Mass of Christian burial 1 p.m. Friday in St. James Church, Route 1, Lafayette Road, Portsmouth. Burial in Calvary cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Guild at Portsmouth Regional Hospital Cancer Care Services, 333 Borthwick Ave., Portsmouth, NH 03801.

Muriel G. Tengquist

Muriel G. Tengquist, 92, formerly of North 40th Avenue West, died Wednesday, April 4, 2001, in Chris Jensen Health & Rehabilitation Center.

She was born Feb. 21, 1909, in Duluth to Anton and Nellie (Paulson) Johnson. She was a 1927 graduate of Denfeld High School, a graduate of the Young & Hursh Business College in Duluth and Gregg College in Chicago. Her father died during the Great Depression, and Muriel worked at Prudential Insurance Co. to help support the family.

She married Wallace A. Tengquist on May 29, 1937, in Duluth. She was an instructor at the Young & Hursh Business College and Duluth Business University. She loved teaching, and many of her students still kept in touch with her.

She was a loving and devoted wife and a friend as well as a mother to her daughter, Louise. Muriel also shared her love with her nephew, Ron Taven, and was like a second mother to him. She was a generous and caring friend, who loved writing letters to her friends and family.

She was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity and its Anna Circle, the Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the Order of Eastern Star Trinity Chapter 242 and the Trioes Club.

Muriel faced many health problems with grace, courage and faith. She would like to thank Dr. David Albright for his wonderful medical care, the nurses at St. Luke's Hospital, St. Luke's home care nurses, and the nurses and aides at Chris Jensen for the wonderful care they gave her and the kindness shown to her.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Helen Stetterberg Taven, who died at the age of 36; her loving husband of 52 years, Wallace, who died April 17, 1990; and her first son-in-law, Joseph DuCharme.

Muriel's death will be mourned by her daughter, Louise (Kamal) Zahan of Las Vegas; her nephew, Ron Taven of Columbia, Mo.; her dear friends, Mrs. Eleanor Schaaf of St. Paul and James (Irene) Schaaf of Wyoming, Minn.; and many other friends in Duluth and across the country. She will be missed by all who knew her.

Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Monday in Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home. Visitation continues from noon until the 1 p.m. service Tuesday in Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity. Burial in Park Hill cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity.

John R. Sommerfeld

John R. Sommerfeld, 78, of Ebony Avenue died Wednesday, April 4, 2001, in his home.

He was born March 30, 1923, in Blue Island, Ill., to Otto and Emma (Ebert) Sommerfeld. He was a lieutenant junior grade in the Naval Air Corps during World War II. He received a degree in chemistry from Capital University in Columbus, Ohio, in 1947 and a degree in geological engineering from Michigan Technological University in Houghton, Mich., in 1951.

John married Jane Ulrich on Dec. 28, 1948, in Detroit. They lived in Hibbing, where John was a mining engineer at U.S. Steel. They moved to Duluth, where John continued his employment with U.S. Steel as a senior mining engineer, until the Duluth Works closed. He was the manager of facility engineering for Duluth Missabe and Iron Range Railway Co. until he retired in 1985. He was a registered professional engineer.

He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, where he had served as church council president, member of the building committee, member of the call committee and Sunday school superintendent. Most recently he was a teacher of the adult Sunday school class and sang in the church choir.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Steven Sommerfeld, who died in August 1999.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Jane; sons Steven (Anita) of Anchorage, Alaska, and Daniel (Susan) of Duluth; a daughter, Lisbeth "Libby" Winkler of Duluth; a sister, Katharine Weller of St. Louis Park, Minn.; and grandchildren Robert Parish, Amanda Sommerfeld, Laura (Darren) Storrs, John Sommerfeld, Angela (Richard) Johnson, Katharine "Katie" Winkler and Sarah Winkler.

Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Sunday in Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home. Visitation continues 10 until the 11 a.m. service Monday in Christ Lutheran Church. Interment in Park Hill cemetery.

Loreen "Lorie" Lea Fish

Loreen "Lorie" Lea Fish, 39, of Laurel, Mont., formerly of Duluth, died Sunday, April 1, 2001, in her home after a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born in Duluth on Nov. 18, 1961, to Charles and Dorleen (Parrott) VanDorn. Lorie attended Munger Elementary School, graduated from Proctor High School in 1980 and graduated from St. Luke's X-ray training in 1982. She worked as an X-ray technician in Brainerd for two years before returning to this area. She worked at St. Luke's Hospital until 1993. Lorie married Peter Fish on Sept. 5, 1987. They moved to Laurel in 1993.

Lorie was preceded in death by her father, Charles A. VanDorn; her maternal grandparents, Bert and Ruth Parrott; and paternal grandparents, Charles and Nora VanDorn.

She is survived by her husband, Peter of Laurel; her mother, Dorleen R. VanDorn of Duluth; a brother, Steven (Debra) VanDorn of Etown, Ky.; sisters Sharon (Royal) Sams of Tulsa, Okla., Elaine (Randy) Thudin of Esko and Leiah (Scott) Schroeder of Portage, Wis., her mother-in-law, Anthnet Fish of Hermantown; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Friday in Northland Funeral Home, 801 14th St., Cloquet. Service 1 p.m. Saturday in Cloquet Gospel Tabernacle, 1400 Washington Ave. Burial in Maple Grove cemetery. Mable A. Winn

Mable A. Winn, 86, of Shakopee, Minn., died Tuesday, April 3, 2001.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ross; and a son-in-law, Ronald Ott.

She is survived by her son, Herbert (Bonnie) Winn of Duluth; a daughter, Carol Ann Ott of Chaska, Minn.; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Visitation: noon until the 1 p.m. service Friday in Ballard-Sunder Funeral Home, Shakopee. Interment in Eden Prairie cemetery.

George Felix "Mickey" Archambault

George Felix "Mickey" Archambault, 92, of Maple Grove Road died Monday, April 2, 2001, in Benedictine Health Center surrounded by his loving family.

Mickey was a lifelong Duluth resident born to Oscar and Rose Archambault in 1908. He attended school in Duluth. On July 19, 1932, he married Blanche Elizabeth Zukowsky. He was part owner of a trolley service in Duluth and a chief cook for the Great Lakes Fleet and he built the first incinerator plant for the removal of waste from foreign ships. He was owner and operator of Mickey's Transfer moving company, Mickey's Sanitary Service, Allied Taxi Service and City Taxi. He also owned and operated Mickey's Hobby Shop, out of his home, which is officially closed.

He was a member of St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church and a former member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Mickey was preceded in death by his parents; daughters Charlotte Wentz and Sharon Ann Archambault; a son, Jerry; a brother, Dan; a sister, Virginia Trotta; grandsons Derek and Adam Archambault; granddaughters Nicole Marie Hare and Pamela Hynes; and great-grandsons David Hynes and Colin Cox.

He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Blanche; daughters Pat (Jim) Hynes of Duluth, Bonnie (Phillip) Zinsmaster of Sherwood, Mich., Joan (Jim) Aubut of San Gabriel Calif., Linda (Eugene) Hare of Hermantown; sons Jim (Lee) of Minneapolis, Dick (Pat) of Bloomington, Minn., and Gary (Carol) of Duluth; a sister, Olive Carlson of Duluth; 38 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and his special caregivers at Benedictine Health Center.

Visitation: 5-7 p.m. today and continues 10 until the 11 a.m. service Friday in Bell Brothers Chapel, Monsignor Patrick McDowell officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.

Lambert M. Klosowsky

Lambert M. Klosowsky, 93, of East Third Street died Friday, March 30, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center.

Lambert was born in Proctor to Conrad and Minnie (Martin) Klosowsky and lived in Hermantown and Duluth. He graduated from East High School in Detroit in 1929 and from Packard Motor Co. for auto mechanics. He had worked for Bolton Swanby and Arrow Chevrolet, and for 33 years he owned and operated Lambert Service in Duluth Heights.

He was a lifetime member of Peace United Church of Christ, and he served in the Army during World War II. In 1990, he wrote his autobiography. Lambert wintered in Deland, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Ann, in 1989.

Lambert is survived by his wife, Dorothy Perry Klosowsky and her daughter, Kandi (Rod) Sturm, of Duluth; a sister, Dorothy Wentlaff, of Duluth; a nephew, Paul (Grace) Sandstrom, of Hermantown; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation: 11 until the noon service Tuesday in Peace United Church of Christ. Entombment in Sunrise Memorial Park. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Jarvi-Dowd Chapel, 925 E. Fourth St.
