David Roland Wickstrom

David Roland Wickstrom, 54, of Duluth finished the race in total victory as a believer of Jesus Christ Saturday, March 3, 2001, in Miller-Dwan Hospital.

He was born Nov. 2, 1946, and was a graduate of Duluth East High School and the University Minnesota Duluth. He also attended Elim Bible College in Rochester, N.Y., and Trinity Theological Seminary in Chicago.

David loved the outdoors and was an avid skier and loved canoeing in the area. He served as manager for Simmons Precious Metals Refinery in Chicago and worked for New York Life. He was also part owner of the Animal Castle in Cloquet.

David is survived by his parents, Roland and Mary Jane (Armstrong) Wickstrom, and his sister, Marilyn Kay Wickstrom of Duluth; his wife, Dorothy (Bateman) Wickstrom; daughters Lisa Carmen of Duluth and Heather Elaine Wickstrom of Denver; an aunt, Dorothy Armstrong of Minneapolis; and numerous cousins.

Visitation: 5-7 p.m. today in Johnson Mortuary Chapel, 514 E. Third St., Duluth and noon until the 1 p.m. service Wednesday in Crown Christian Family Church, 901 E. Third St., Duluth, the Rev. Bob Aspling officiating. Memorials may be given to Crown Christian Family Church. Interment in Riverside cemetery, Kerrick at a later date. Arrangements by Johnson Mortuary.

Harry Edward Egan Jr.

Harry Edward Egan Jr., 74, of Acacia Avenue, Proctor died Sunday, March 4, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center.

He was born in Superior and had resided in Duluth and Proctor all his life. Harry was employed as a pipefitter with U.S. Steel's Duluth Works from 1944 to 1975, and in building maintenance with Jeno's Inc. from 1975 to 1984. He retired in building maintenance from the Radisson Hotel in 1986.

He attended St. James Catholic Church and was a member of the West Duluth American Legion, Steelworkers Local 1028, and was a former member of the West Duluth Moose. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. Harry was an avid bowler and bowled in the Majors for many years. Most recently he bowled in the Seniors.

Harry was preceded in death by his parents, Harry E. Sr. and Grace Egan; a brother, James; and his brother-in-law, Dick Hedeen.

He is survived by his wife, DuRaine; daughters Claire (Robert) Smith of Omaha, Neb., Debra (Michael) Hennessy of Duluth, Monica (Dennis) Stokke of Hermantown and Hilary (Mark Norby) Alvino of Chaska, Minn.; a stepdaughter, Stephanie (Marty) Oberg of Saginaw; a stepson, Steven Makitalo of Proctor; a sister, Mary Hedeen of Duluth; grandchildren Andrew Harry Smith, Glynnis (George Dietrick) Smith, Stephen (Mary) Hennessy, Joseph Egan (Stacy Dargis) Hennessy, Christopher Hennessy, Mollie (Scott) Lucia, Shaine (Jennifer) Stokke, Katharine Alvino and Maureen Alvino; step-grandchildren Amanda and Carli Oberg, and Eric, Cody and Jessica Makitalo; great-grandchildren Sierra and Abigail Hennessy, and Cole Stokke; and many nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian burial: 1 p.m. today in St. James Catholic Church. Military honors will be accorded by the Duluth VFW Honor Guard. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors-Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave W.

Raymond Johnson

Raymond Johnson, 74, of Duluth passed away Saturday, March 3, 2001, in his residence.

He was born Dec. 7, 1926, in Duluth to Alfred and Jennie (Anderson) Johnson. Raymond lived his whole life in the Duluth area. He served in the Army during the Korean War. Raymond married Elizabeth Paulus Witherly Aug. 31, 1968. He was employed at Duluth Ready Mix for 36 years as a truck driver, retiring in 1989. Raymond was a collector of many things.

Raymond was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Elizabeth; his children, Kristine (David) Grant of Dekalb, Ill., Richard (Coleen) Witherly, Patricia Alvar and Jennifer (Erick) Fronden, all of Duluth; brothers Gunnar of Duluth, Richard (Dorothy) of Rockford, Ill., and George of Duluth; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Visitation: 11 a.m. until the noon memorial service today in Johnson Mortuary Chapel, 514 E. Third St., Duluth. Burial of cremated remains will take place at a later date in Sunrise Memorial Park cemetery, Hermantown. Arrangements by Johnson Mortuary.

Thomas Reid Hamilton

Thomas Reid Hamilton, 89, passed away peacefully Saturday, March 3, 2001, in Kansas City, Kan., following a lengthy illness.

Dr. Hamilton was a former faculty member at the University of Minnesota Duluth School of Medicine. Dr. Hamilton's family were pioneers in the medical community in Kansas City. The son of Dr. Hugh D. and Bertha Hamilton, Tom attended Southwest High School, where he served as president of the first graduating class. He attended the University of Missouri, Columbia, where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He was a graduate of the University of Kansas Medical School.

Retiring as a major from World War II, Dr. Hamilton served with the University of Kansas 77th Evacuation Hospital in England, Africa and Sicily, where he received the Meritorious Unit Award. Tom had an illustrious career in academic medicine. He founded and was the first chairman of the Microbiology and Immunology Department in the University of Kansas Medical Center, where his career spanned 30 years. He chaired the first Microbiology and Immunology Department in UMD School of Medicine. He returned to Kansas City as director of microbiology in Truman Medical Center.

For the past 19 years, he has been a member of the Pathology Department teaching clinical microbiology and immunology with his wife and teaching partner, Bette.

Among the many awards Dr. Hamilton received are the Elmer Pierson Good Teaching Award, Faculty Appreciation Award and Teacher of the Year Award. He was honored by Sigma Xi, Alpha Omega Alpha, presented with the American Heart Association's Silver Medallion award for meritorious service. He served as vice president of the science pioneers. Dr. Hamilton belonged to a number of professional organizations, authored numerous scientific articles and sections of medical textbooks.

Dr. Hamilton was preceded in death by his eldest son, Tom R. Hamilton Jr.; and a grandson, Stephen Reid Hamilton.

He is survived by his devoted wife of nearly 60 years, Bette Wasson Hamilton; his daughter, Anne (Ray) Meyn of Houston, and their children, Bill and Kathy; his son, Tim Hamilton of Nashville, Tenn., and his daughters, Shaun Maxwell and Maurie Grace; a niece, Bette Anne (Mark) Mayberry of Morrison, Colo.; a nephew, Gerry (Katarina) Hamilton of New York; a niece, Sally Hamilton (Snowden) Day of Destin, Fla.; his faithful cousins, Simpson Hamilton and Dr. B.G. (Camille) Hamilton of Richmond, Mo.; granddaughters Debbi Anne Atteberry of Paola, Kan., and Kim (Ron) Temperia of Houston; a grandson, Tracy Nielson of Kansas City, Mo.; and five great-grandchildren.

Services were March 5 in St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Kansas City. The Rev. Robert Wood presided. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to the University of Minnesota Duluth, School of Medicine.

Fred D. House

Fred D. House, 86, of Duluth, formerly of Two Harbors died Monday, March 5, 2001, in his home.

Doris Mae Gribbon

Doris Mae Gribbon, 76, of Hermantown died Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, in her home.

Doris was born Nov. 2, 1924, in Hermantown to Roman and Ethel (Curtis) Miernicki. She retired in 1987 from Hermantown Public Schools where she last worked as a custodian. Her hobbies included singing with the Sweet Adelines, ceramics, needlework and league bowling. She enjoyed playing cards with friends and her weekly bingo game. Doris always found time to listen and cared deeply for her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her beloved son, Gregg in 1979; and a granddaughter, Leslie in 2000.

Doris is survived by her husband of 45 years, Clyde; a brother, Donald (Gail) Miernicki of San Luis Obispo, Calif.; daughters Terry Benson of Las Vegas and Wendy Gribbon of Duluth; sons Randy and Brian, both of Duluth; a daughter-in-law, Marianne Hendrickson of Germany; grandchildren Todd (Michelle) and Darren Benson, both of Las Vegas, Kelly Hendrickson of Germany, and Jamie and Megan Gribbon, both of Duluth; great-grandchildren Marcel, Sina and Nicole; five nieces; a nephew; numerous cousins; and her lifelong best friend, Joan Curtis.

Memorial service: 2 p.m. Wednesday in Dougherty Funeral Home, Duluth.

Hugo Saari

Hugo Saari, 75, of Ramsey Manor died of natural causes on Jan. 22, 2001, in his residence.

He was born Dec. 9, 1925, in Zim. He attended schools in Zim and Cherry. He served in the Army during World War II in the European and African theaters. He received many commendations. After the war, he traveled extensively in the United States and in Europe.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and three sisters.

He is survived by sisters Selma Leino of Virginia and Elma Niemi of Duluth and many nieces and nephews.

Service: No funeral service is planned. His burial will be in Zim cemetery.

Milton Edward Peterson

Milton Edward Peterson, 85, formerly of Zimmerly Avenue died Monday, Feb. 26, 2001, in the Waters of Park Point health-care facility.

He was born in Duluth to Axel and Mary Peterson, graduated from Morgan Park High School and attended the Duluth Business School of Accounting. He served in the Army during World War II. He worked for United States Steel, Duluth Works, as an accountant/cashier, retiring in 1975. He married Jane Elder Dec. 12, 1942, in Duluth. Together they raised four sons.

Milton was a longtime member of Riverview United Methodist Church, where he was active in the church choir, a Sunday school teacher, superintendent of the Sunday school, served on various boards and also as custodian. He was responsible for starting Boy Scouts Troop 12 in Smithville, Minn. He was also the Auriga District representative for BSA. Milton was a member of Euclid Lodge, Elim Wedding Ring Club, and manager of the Riverview Methodist Fast Pitch Softball Team.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jane in 1996; brothers Grant, George and Theodore; and sisters Edith Reuter and Nellie Johnson.

Milton is survived by sons James (Sharon) of Rice Lake, Wis., Robert (Janeth) of Sacramento, Calif., Richard (Denise) of Vadnais Heights, Minn., and Timothy (Arnette) of Virginia; grandchildren Shauna, Steve, Erica, Kristi and Justin; a great-granddaughter, Brittany; a special friend, Donna Swanson; and nieces and nephews.

Visitation: 5-7 p.m. today in Bell Brothers Chapel. Service 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Riverview United Methodist Church. Burial in Oneota cemetery. Memorials to the church would be appreciated. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.

Evelyn B. Mork

Headed Women's Institute

Evelyn B. Mork, former director of the Women's Institute of Duluth and a member of the Arena-Auditorium Administration Board, passed away Monday, Feb. 26, 2001, in San Antonio, Texas, where she made her home the past few years.

She was a graduate of Duluth Central and received a bachelor of arts degree from the Duluth State Teachers College. She was a former teacher and also worked for the State Department in St. Paul and the Duluth Highway Department, from which she retired. She married Clifford Mork in September 1939, and together they owned and operated the Mork Food Supply for many years.

Evelyn was the fourth person to hold the position as director of the Women's Institute of Duluth for nine years, retiring in July of 1978. She served as a member of the Arena-Auditorium Administration Board from July 1, 1970 through June 30, 1976, and served as officer and chairman of the Special Events and Projects Committee on behalf of the Arena-Auditorium and the community. She was a member of the American Association of University Women, Business Professional Women and director emeritus of Save Lake Superior Association.

She was preceded in death by her husband, E. Clifford Mork, in August 1961, while he was mayor of Duluth.

Evelyn is survived by a sister, Marjorie Sandberg of San Antonio, with whom she made her home; a sister, Virginia Herzing of Harlingen, Texas; a brother, Vern (Pat) Sandberg of Oronoco, Minn.; a nephew, John Herzing, Jr. of Harlingen; and nieces Karen Bless of Oronoco, Gretta Freeman of Alexandria, Va., and Jennifer McCulley of Oakton, Va.

Nora M. Giese

Nora M. Giese, 89, formerly of Morgan Park died Monday, Feb. 26, 2001, in Nopeming Nursing Home.

She was born in Rice Lake, Wis., on March 6, 1911, to Michael and Leona Mullen. Nora had lived in Duluth most of her life. She had been employed in St. Mary's Hospital, Twin Ports Optical and Hanson Hardware, where she had worked as a clerk. She was a member of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church and it's Altar Guild, and Good Fellowship Club.

Nora was preceded in death by her husband, Francis in 1966; and a brother, Nick Mullen.

She is survived by a son, Vern (Judy) of Hermantown; a daughter, Carolyn (Jack) Lima of West Palm Beach, Fla.; sisters-in-law Evelyn Puhl of Duluth and Martha Mullen of Rice Lake; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian burial Friday in St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church. Burial in Calvary cemetery, Superior. Arrangements by Hegstrom Family Funeral Homes, Foley Chapel, 5405 Ramsey St.

Nick S. Rukavina Sr.

Nick S. Rukavina Sr., 77, of Duluth died Monday, Feb. 26, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center.

He was born in Duluth Sept. 5, 1923, and was a lifelong resident. He graduated from Morgan Park High School. Nick had retired as a police officer from the Duluth Police Department. He was a member of St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council 2583 and was active with the Duluth Police Credit Union for more than 40 years, serving as manager of the Credit Union until December of 2000.

Nick was preceded in death by his parents, Mike and Lucille (Majerich) Rukavina; a son, Nick Jr.; and sister Ann Kaplenk and Margaret Rukavina.

He is survived by his wife, Thyra; a daughter, Sandra (Stan) Malmquist of Duluth; brothers Steve (Caroline) of Crystal River, Fla., and Robert (Jackie) of Duluth; sisters Kathryn (William) Aldrich of Eveleth, Josephine "Dolly" (James) Foucault of Duluth and Lucy (Leroy) Nordenstan of Westminster, Calif.; grandsons Bryan and Kevin; and a granddaughter, Jennifer.

Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian burial Saturday in St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church. Honor guard provided by the Duluth Police Department Honor Guard. Arrangements by Hegstrom Family Funeral Homes, Foley Chapel, 5405 Ramsey St.
