Eleanor J. Wagner

Eleanor J. Wagner, 91, of Church Place, formerly of Piedmont Avenue, died Friday, March 23, 2001, in Viewcrest Health Center.

She was born in Cumberland, Wis., Jan. 21, 1910, to Charles and Signe (Bergstrom) Swanson. A Duluth resident since 1927, she was a former employee at Diamond Tool & Horseshoe Co. She was a homemaker and a member of Christ Lutheran Church and its Mary Circle. Eleanor had a love for the outdoors and enjoyed her home, flower gardens, raspberry patches and fishing, especially up the North Shore. She was known by her neighbors and friends as "Auntie Eleanor" and "Gramma Eleanor."

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Lucille Perala and Signe Doetsch; brothers Verner and Randall Swanson; and her husband, William E. Wagner on Nov. 15, 1975.

Survivors include a sister, Ethel Linder of Billings, Mont.; nieces and nephews; and many dear friends and neighbors.

Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Tuesday in Christ Lutheran Church. Burial in Hermantown cemetery. Memorials preferred to the Mary Circle of Christ Lutheran Church. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.

George Reuben Bowen

George Reuben Bowen, 80, of Elder Drive died Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, at home.

A lifelong Duluth resident, he was born Aug. 19, 1920, to John Francis and Johanna Marie (Neimann) Bowen. He married Virginia June Holappa in Duluth May 1, 1939. He worked for the Duluth Missabe and Iron Range Railway from 1950 until his retirement in 1984, as well as Western Electric, Alworth Woolen and Sam Johnson & Sons Fisheries. He was a member of the Moose Lodge 1478.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters; three brothers; and a son, Gene in 1975.

George's pride and joy were his kids and grandchildren. George is survived by his wife, Virginia; children George of Duluth, Gayle Best of Superior, Gwynne Thieme of Withee, Wis., Gary of Sandstone, Gregory of Phoenix, Gloria Nelson of Esko, Grant and Geoff, both of Duluth, Geordis McDonald of Duluth, Garth of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Geneen O'Niell of Hales Corner, Wis., and Geri Johnson of Duluth; 31 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; a brother, Richard of Chula Vista, Calif.; and a sister, Eileen Willard of Maryville, Wash.

Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Wednesday in Jarvi-Dowd Chapel and 10 until the 11 a.m. service Thursday in Peace United Church of Christ. Burial in Park Hill cemetery. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Jarvi-Dowd Chapel, 925 E. Fourth St.

Patricia L. (Dargan) Grandaw

Patricia L. (Dargan) Grandaw, 60, of Duluth passed away Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, in her home with her family beside her.

She was born in Duluth Feb. 23, 1940, to Eleanore and Albert Dargan. Patricia graduated from Floodwood High School in 1958. She attended DAVTI (Lake Superior College), graduating in 1983, with a licensed practical nurse (LPN) degree. She worked as an LPN in Benet Hall in the College of St. Scholastica until she became ill in 1998.

Patricia loved life and her family. She enjoyed camping and feeding the birds and chipmunks in her back yard. She loved her job as an LPN in Benet Hall and all of the sisters she had the privilege to help in their time of need.

Patricia will be sadly missed, but her memory will live on in the hearts of all whose lives she touched.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Eleanore.

Patricia is survived by her husband, Dave; a daughter, Julie; a son, James; her father, Bert Dargan; and an aunt, Nancy Lindstrom, all of Duluth; a brother-in-law, Phil Grandaw of Seattle; sisters-in-law Rosemarie (Andre) Gouin, Paula Grandaw, Arlene (Bill) Borden, Cordelia (Ron) Olson and Amelia (Butch) Puttbrese, all of International Falls, Elvyra (Tony) Munch of Littlefork, Carol (Vern) Bergstrom of Yakima, Wash., Darleen Johnson of Ellensburg, Wash., and Cecelia (George) Miller of Everett, Wash.; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Visitation: 5-8 p.m. Thursday with 7 p.m. wake prayers in Dougherty Funeral Home. Funeral Mass 10 a.m. Friday in St. Peter's Catholic Church. Burial in Sunrise Memorial Park. Memorials preferred to Benet Hall-St. Scholastica, 1001 Kenwood Ave., Duluth MN 55811. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, 600 E. Second St.

Milton B. "Nick" Caya

Milton B. "Nick" Caya, 69, of Duluth died Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, in his home.

He was born April 17, 1931, in Duluth to Lulus and Mary Hatley Caya. He graduated from Denfeld High School, worked for Chun King, R.J. Reynolds and most recently at Joanna Foods as an assembly line supervisor, also worked as a clerk in West Duluth News.

He was a member of St. James Catholic Church and the Blue Army. He enjoyed bowling on several bowling leagues and was the Bowler of the Year in the Superior area in 1971. He also enjoyed golfing at the Proctor Golf Course.

Nick was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, John Burger.

He is survived by a brother, Henry (Muriel) Burger of Duluth; sisters Beverly Zeidel of Green Bay, Wis., and Bernice Nedesky of Knoxville, Tenn.; nieces Annette (Thomas) Mellinger of Duluth, Linda (Ron) Hebaus of Stillwater, Minn., Roberta Radford of Moorhead, Minn., Patricia Burger of Brooklyn Park, Minn., and Barb (Bob) Cyech of Henderson, Nev.; nephews Michael Nedesky of Knoxville and Steven Nedesky of California; and many relatives and friends.

Gathering of friends: 9 until the 10 a.m. memorial Mass today in St. James Catholic Church. Inurnment in Calvary cemetery. Arrangements by Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home.

Margaret J. "Mardy" Pederson

Margaret J. "Mardy" Pederson, 71, of North Pike Lake Road died Sunday, March 18, 2001, in St. Luke's Hospital.

She was born Dec. 4, 1929, in Duluth to Joseph and Sophie (Sojka) Janczak. She was a lifelong Duluth and Pike Lake area resident. Mardy was a 1948 graduate of Denfeld High School and had been a homemaker. She had been an employee of Oliver Iron Mining Co. for nine years. She married Howard A. Pederson June 15, 1957, in Duluth.

Mardy was a member of St. Josephat National Catholic Church. Mardy enjoyed family, especially her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Frank Janczak; and a sister, Florence Lofald.

Mardy is survived by her husband, Howard; daughters Judy (Alan) Orr of Bath, Maine and Michelle (Warren Gressman, a special friend of Mardy) Pederson of Duluth; brothers and sisters Marie Bassa of Duluth, Irene Bassa of Brookston, Minn., Stanley Janczak of Duluth, Dorothy (Edward) Bussa of Duluth, Wallace (Eileen) Janczak of Duluth, and her twin, Marcella (Arthur) Thompson of Esko; grandchildren Kristin and Michael Orr, both of Bath; a brother-in-law, Marvin Lofald of Hermantown; and a sister-in-law, Audrey Jancak of Duluth.

Thomas Eugene "Tom" Grosser

President of Port Authority

Thomas Eugene "Tom" Grosser, 57, of Ridgewood Road, president of the Port Authority, died peacefully Sunday, March 18, 2001, at home after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born Jan. 27, 1944, in Faribault, Minn., to Eugene Clarence and Margaret (Yessak) Grosser.

He graduated from Bethlehem Academy in Faribault and the College of St. Thomas with a bachelor of arts degree in business administration. He married Theresa Ann Dinneen Dec. 7, 1968, in Rose Creek, Minn. Tom was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War. A Duluth resident for the past 20 years, he was general manager and safety coordinator at AGP Grain Ltd. grain elevators.

Tom was a member of Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary, Knights of Columbus, GEAPS, on the board of the Veterans War Memorial, the board of Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank, served on the fund-raising committee for the Great Lakes Aquarium, a past member of Downtown Rotary and was serving his fourth term as president of the Seaway Port Authority. Tom was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and his time in his cabin.

He was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Nick Dinneen.

Tom is survived by his wife, Theresa; sons Aaron (Beth) of Bloomington, Minn., and Joel of St. Louis, Mo.; a daughter, Bridget (Jeffrey) Edmonds of Missoula, Mont.; his parents, Eugene and Margaret Grosser of Faribault; a sister, Patricia (Lou) Duda of Bettendorf, Iowa; his mother-in-law Catherine Dinneen of Rose Creek; and other relatives.

Visitation: 4-8 p.m. today with a time for sharing, evening prayers followed by the 7 p.m. service of the Most Holy Rosary in Jarvi-Dowd Chapel. Mass of Christian burial 11 a.m. Wednesday in Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary. Burial in Forest Hill cemetery. Louise M. Kujawa

Louise M. Kujawa, 86, passed away Sunday, March 18, 2001, in Nopeming Care Center.

Louise was born July 9, 1914, to Peter and Rose (Lajiness) Eno in Duluth and lived here all of her life. She was formerly employed in Miller-Dwan Medical Center lab housekeeping department.

Louise loved traveling around to visit her children.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Anton in 1972; and her only sister, Margaret "Dolly" LeBlanc.

She is survived by sons Daniel (Bernie) of Duluth and Frank P. (Sharon) of Yuma, Ariz.; a daughter, Rosemary (Loren) Christgau of Yuma; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Visitation: 5-8 p.m. today with a 6 p.m. wake service in Foley Funeral Chapel. Mass of Christian burial 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Proctor. The Rev. June E. Anderson

June E. Anderson, 62, of Tioga Street died Monday, March 19, 2001, in her home with her family at her side.

She was born June 15, 1938, in Duluth to David and Gladys (Warner) Hedlund. She was a 1956 graduate of Denfeld High School. She married Terrance A. "Terry" Anderson June 13, 1959, in Duluth. She was a teller for Northern City National Bank, took time away from work to raise her children, and returned to work for Duluth National Bank, which through mergers became First Bank and then U.S. Bank's West office.

June was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Terry on May 29, 2000; a sister, Dorothy Hedlund; and brothers Leonard, James and Donald Hedlund.

She is survived by sons David (Karen) of Fridley, Minn., Dwayne of Superior and Ronald of Torrence, Calif.; a brother, William Hedlund of Collegeville, Texas; a sister, Janet M. Bodin of Duluth; grandchildren Evie, Brian and Kim; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation: noon until the 1 p.m. service Saturday in Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home. Burial in Forest Hill cemetery.

Edna S. Annand

Edna S. Annand, 93, formerly of East End Street died Sunday, March 18, 2001, in Chris Jensen Health & Rehabilitation Center.

She was born Aug. 22, 1907, to Tobias and Martha (Peterson) Olson in Duluth. She graduated from Duluth Central High School, worked as a clerk in St. Louis County Land Department for over 20 years and was a dental assistant to Dr. Rapp for many years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William on Nov. 27, 1977; and a brother, Odin S. Olson.

Edna is survived by a stepson, James Annand of Deer River; nephews Roger Eidum of Duluth, Chuck (Edna) Eidum of Burnsville, Minn., and Richard "Dick" (Sandra) Olson of Blaine, Minn.; a niece, Lona (Dale) Nordgren of Siren, Wis.; two step-grandchildren; a step-great-grandchild; a sister, Theresa P. Eidum of Duluth; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial service: 11 a.m. Thursday in Johnson Mortuary Chapel. Inurnment in Forest Hill cemetery. Arrangments by Johnson Mortuary.

Maxine Miriam Slater

Maxine Miriam Slater, 76, of College Park, Md., formerly a Duluth resident for 54 years died Friday, March 16, 2001, in Laurel Regional Hospital, Laurel, Md.

She was born July 6, 1924, in Bastrop, Texas to Tom and Eva (Pace) Jones. She was a 1941 graduate of Lexington (Texas) High School. Maxine married Ralph Harvard Slater June 10, 1943, in Brenham, Texas. In Duluth she was employed by Davidson Publishing Co., Target Inc., and Benson Optical.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and a sister, Thelma (Foster) Lewis of McDade, Texas.

Maxine is survived by a son, Wayne Harvard Slater of College Park; an aunt, Hortense (Pace) Carney of McDade; and nieces and nephews in Minnesota, Texas, New Mexico, and California.

Memorial service is planned for the family in Texas this summer. Memorials are preferred and may be directed to the American Heart Association, Duluth Chapter of the Salvation Army, First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) Lexington, Texas, or to the donor's choice. Arrangments by Fleck Funeral Home, Laurel.
